Allycat - hello from England. Just spotted your post by pure chance. James Ell is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle - if that makes sense! He was born in Shoreditch, 23/6/1832, christened, 26th aug 1832 and was the som of Thomas Ell and Susannah Purgill. He is from a long line of Thomas' which can be traced back to the 1760s. He was a carpenter like many of the Ell family in the 1800s. He emigrtaed and then married (Catherine) Harriet Simmons (B Merriwa 16/5/1840) 7/1/1859 at Singleton. On death at 63 of cardiac failure he was classed as an undertaker. His obituary records the fact that "several well known buildings stand as a monument to his skills, the School of Arts being one".
There is also a link to the Fitzroy Hotel in Merriwa built in the 1890s - it was owned by racehose owner James (I assume his son)- who was Co owner of the Royal mail & Passenger coaches which departed from the hotel daily for Gungal, Muswell Brook & Denman.

He was also survived by a further two generations of racehorse trainers which included my Uncle Lloyd Jones,Father Aubrey Jones (All deceased) and my cousin Kim Jones.
James and Harriet Ell were my great grandfathers parents.
James E ell married Mary Partridge and together had Walter died in australia of war wounds WWI France and Albert also wounded WWI France, Kathleen Moade Born 1897-1980,Magdalene (Madge),and Ilene who died in Newcastle in her twenties. All our now deceased.
Mary wife of James Ell (Racehorse trainer) died 1864-1914 young and was the daughter catherine harriet who was irish and owned a pub just outside of Merriwa with her husband and children.
The curator of the Merriwa museum lives in their house currently where my great great grandmother Mary was born.
Kathline told me as a child many stories including her witnessing a bushranger brought into merriwa in a cage on cart. He was jimmy govener or jimmy blacksmith(they made the movie)

Hi Allcat,

I am the granddaughter of Francis and Alice Ell (nee Parmeter). Francis (Frank) had 5 children with Alice before she died. Francis Gerald, Reginald Kevin, Michael Bede, Joan ? And Monica ?. Francis Jnr as far as I know didn't die as he was at my Father's (Reginald) funeral in 1986. Francis remarried and had 3 more children, Gloria, another daughter who's name I cannot recall and Robert(deceased). Hope this helps you.

Christine Blayney-Murphy (nee Ell)
