... Henry Desailly Cecil Hardinge was charged, on remand, on the information of District Constable Jones, with having on the 26th August, feloniously embezzled the sum of ?16 12s 6d., the moneys, goods, and chattels of Her Majesty the Queen, he being at the time a clerk in Her Majesty's Treasury in Hobart Town.
8 July 1874 - WANGANUI
... The Funeral of the late Henry Desaily Cecil Hardinge, Esq., will leave the residence of Miss Hackett, Maria Place, this afternoon; Wednesday, the 8th instant, at 3 o'clock
10 July 1876 - TASMANIA (from the Wanganui Chronicle)
... The "Tasmanian Tribune" of the 21st contains the following:- "Our obituary notice of to-day announces the death of an old officer of the Government, viz., Stephen Tunbridge Hardinge, Esq., formerly Postmaster at Hobart Town. Mr Hardinge died at his residence, Colville Street, New Town Road, on the night of the 19th inst., aged 69 years. The deceased was for many years a valuable offier of the Post Office department, and passed through the various grades of the office till he attained to be chief clerk, and ultimately succeeded Captain Smith as Postmaster-General. Some years back, at a comparatively early age, his health gave way, and the deceased has for the last seven or eight years enjoyed the pension of ?341 13s 4d per annum, which he became entitled to. The deceased has twice been married, and leaves a widow and a numerous family".
The gentleman referred to was the father of the late Mr Henry De'Sailly Cecil Hardinge, who at one time occupied the position of sub-editor of this journal (Wanganui Chronicle), and had many friends in Wanganui and Wellington, in the latter of which places he died, of heart disease

My great grandmother Jane Jones (nee Barnes) was the sister of Julia Mary Penfold (nee Barnes) Julia Mary married Richard Penfold and what from what I have been able to ascertain had two children Anne Elizabeth and Richard William. I have been trying to find out more about the Barnes family and have located quite a lot of information about their father William Henry who was a labour reformer in the mid 80s in Christchurch
