The Australasian Sat 30 Mar 1901
HOYSTED. –On the 23rd March, at Torquay-villa,
Wangaratta, Frederick William Hoysted, sen.,
second son of the late John Hoysted, of Walterstown-house, county Kildare, Ireland, and nephew of Lieut.-Colonel Hoysted and Sir Charles Coote, Bart., in his 83rd year.
Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Saturday 30 Mar 1901
DEATH OF AN OLD PIONEER.
The death of Mr. Fred. W. Hoysted, an old and respected identity of the Wangaratta district, caused much regret on Saturday morning, the fact being more deplored because his death was due to an accident.
Deceased and his wife had for some weeks been residing with their daughter, Mrs. Brimcombe, at Torquay Villa, where they were to spend their declining years, and on Friday a fall that deceased sustained in a moment of absent-mindedness, inflicted such severe injury that death ensued next morning. The deceased was in his 83rd year, having been born in November, 1818, at Walterstown House, county Kildare, Ireland, and he came from one of the best known hunting and racing families in that country. He was the second son of the late John Hoysted, one of the largest landowners in Ireland and
the owner of the Estates of Punchestown Ballymogal, Magaddy and Walterstown,
Punchestown (now held by Lord Monk) being famous as a racing and hunting
estate. The late Mr. F. W. Hoysted was reared in an atmosphere of hunting and
racing, and as a young man was well-known as a leader after the hounds and as the owner of several racehorses, Vandyke, Sir Tommy More and others being noted performers on the turf.
His elder brother having died while a young man, he for some years helped in his father's business, and later on, crossed to Liverpool, in England, where he carried on the business of cattle salesman on his own account with
marked success, with the death of his father his future prospects- were entirely altered, for contrary to expectation, the whole of his father's fortune was inherited by his widow (a second wife) and her family.
Mr. Hoysted never disputed the will, although he was advised that there
were good grounds for doing so, but determined to remain, independent of his relatives, and set out to seek his fortune in Australia. He, therefore, came to Victoria with his wife and family in the "Empire," landing in Melbourne in December, 1859, and after a short residence in that city removed to Benalla where he started business as a horse trainer. In this capacity he made a name for himself throughout the colony, for he was an excellent hand with horses, and aided by his sons turned out many winners on behalf of. Mr. John Evans, the late Messrs. Henry Kett, Henry Connelly, and Benjamin Warby
and other well remembered patrons of the turf of the sixties and seventies. He also owned the racer, Spanker, who was a good horse in his day.
The late Mr. Hoysted was a thorough sportsman and a keen judge of horseflesh, expert in riding and a fine whip. His sons gradually relieved him of his work as trainer, and about 20 years ago he removed from Benalla to Wangaratta, where be lived until a few weeks since alongside his son, Harry,
still taking a lively interest in all that appertained to racing, his greatest pleasure being derived in watching, and often directing the operations in the stables.
Although not a strongly built man, he had a very wiry nature and was. ill hardly a day in his life. Recently, however, a growth on his face caused him some discomfort, and although he never seemed to completely recover the effects of an operation, there was no suspicion that his constitution sufferred. He was married at an early age to a daughter of the late Andrew Barton, of Ballingfraze, Queen's County, Ireland,
and his wife — now in her 80th. year— survives him, and is unusually hearty for her years.
The couple have many relatives who now occupy high positions in the old country, several of the late Mr. Hoysted's near relatives being well advanced in the British army, while Lady Coote, of Dublin, was an aunt of Mr. Hoysted. Drs. Hoysted and Courtney, of Melbourne, are nephews of the deceased.
Deceased's family who were all born before arrival in Victoria, are very well known and respected residents of the district, and include— John Hoysted, of
Corowa, Mrs. S. C. Foster, of Alhury, F. W. Hoysted, of Al bury, W. Hoysted,
of Taminick, Mrs. G. Barry, Wangaratta, Henry Hoysted, Wangaratta, Robert Hoysted, of Corowa, and Mrs. Brimcombe, of Wangaratta.
The remains of the deceased were interred in the Wangaratta cemetery on Sunday in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends.
Rev. J. Kay Hall officiating at the grave, and Mr. T. Irving conducted the funeral arrangements. The late Mr. Hoysted was a staunch member of the Church of England, and touching reference to his demise was made by the vicar during evening service at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday.
—"Chronicle."
Benalla Standard Fri 27 Mar 1908
MRS. F. W. HOYSTED.
Another old and much-respectcd resident of the district, in the person of Mrs. F. W. Hoysted, passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Brincombe, Cusack-street, Wangaratta, on Monday last. She had been an invalid
for many years past, and on the Wednesday previous, while going from one room
to another, she fell and broke her leg, the shock of which proved fatal.
The deceased, who was 89 years of age, was a daughter of the late Mr. Andrew Barton, of Ballinfranze House, Queen's County, Ireland, and she was married in the old country to Mr. Hoysted, of Walterstown House, County Kildare.
Ten children were born there, and about 40 years ago the whole family came to Victoria, settling first in Melbourne. Mr. and Mrs. Hoysted resided in Benalla for several years, but when the family had grown up and dispersed the parents removed to Wangaratta, where some of the children had settled, and here they made many friends, and were generally esteemed.
Mr. Hoysted, an ardent sportsman, who was reared on the hunting fields of
Kildare, and from whom his sons inherited great love for the horse, died seven years ago.
Deceased was beloved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance, and
her rare personality had much attractiveness. Her surviving children are Mr. J. Hoysted, Corowa ; Mrs. Foster and Mr. Fred, Hoysted, Albury; Mr. Wm. Hoysted, Taminick; Mr. Robert Hoysted, Wagga; Mrs. G. Barry and Mrs. J.
Brimcombe, Wangaratta.
The remains were interred in tho Wangaratta Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon,
in the presence of a large number of sympathisers and friends.

Thanks for all the great responses, especially the two obituaries.

Is anyone able to clarify whether Susan/Susannah Hoysted nee Barton and Edmund Barton, 1st Prime Minister of Australia, were related? Have seen it written that they were cousins but I haven't yet linked them.

by janilye on 2017-02-11 17:06:18

I haven't looked because I wouldn't think so,Edmund Barton's father, William Barton, was born in London and an Anglican, educated at the bluecoat school of Christ's Hospital. His mother, Mary Louisa WHYDAH was the daughter of ? WHYDAH and Sophie SYNETT was born in London c. 1787 and died November 1861 at Camberwell, London, Surrey, England. If you can find out who WHYDAH is/was you might find a little bit of Ireland. Sir Charles COOTE might hold a clue, or perhaps COOTE's wife Dorothea CUFFE.
