OBITUARY of Jabez William James Marks
* Auckland Star, 29 November 1938 PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN - Unwell for some months, Mr Jabez William James Marks, chairman of directors of the Auckland Meat Company, Limited, died this morning at his home in Mount Eden, in his eighty-first year. Four months ago Mr Marks took a stroke, and never completely recovered. He was one of the city's well known businessmen
He left his home in Somerset, England, 62 years ago, arriving in Wellington in the ship Hurunui. He took a position with the Gear Meat Company, Wellington, but later came to Auckland, where he was employed by the late Enoch Wood, a butcher in Symonds Street. Some time after that, he set up in business on his own account and by 1906 he had established several butchers shops.
In that year, however, he amalgamated his business with the Auckland Meat Company, and he became one of the two managing directors. He held that position until 1912, when he resigned to take over the position of chairman of directors of the company.
He was also foundation president of the Auckland master Butchers' Association, which was formed about 1906. He remained president for some years after that date. He was keenly interested in farming, and for some years conducted a farm in the Waikato as a sideline.
Mr Marks leaves a wife, three sons and five daughters.
- The daughters are:
* Miss F. Marks (Florence)
* Mrs A. W. Gregory of Te Awamutu (Harriett Phyllis & Albert William Gregory)
* Mrs W. S. Burns (Lucy & William Saxon Burns) of Auckland
* Mrs R. S. Magill (Ruth & Robert Stanley Magill) of Auckland
* Mrs C. W. Swales (Alma Emily & Claude Maitland Swales) of Auckland
The sons, all of whom took up the same business as their father, reside in Auckland.

Hi ngaire
I am enquiring about the Marks family as I used to live at the same address and am very interested in the history of the house.
I lived there for 20 years and loved it.
Are you able to tell me about it or the family.
I have found some information on Jabez and his court case in 1912, also a history of the Auckland meat Company.
Thank you

reader does not say which address in Auckland she is referring to ...
