COPELAND, HARVEY, WHITE families for area of Sequatchie, Bledsoe and Marion counties Tennessee

Journal by banalban

I am researching my Appalachian roots in the area of Sequatchie and Marion counties to include eastern Tennessee and possibly into North Carolina.
My grandmother was Nina Belle White, 1901-1989, born in Whitwell, TN; her parents were Adeline Copeland 1872-1917 and Joseph Woodson White 1864-1920, both dying in Alabama.
I have not been able to locate much information on the Copelands' and the only info on Joseph White is his parent's names from his death certificate showing Joe White and Jane Person (I located a researcher who believes Jane's actual surname was Apperson, prevalent in the east TN area).
Adeline Copeland's parents were Joseph Howard Copeland 1847-1908 and Olly Ann Harvey 1848-1922. I don't believe Olly's parents ever married; they were Eveline Harvey, b. abt 1828 and James McWilliams 1824-1892.
Currently, I am very interested in Eveline as there is no further mention, or record, of her after 1860.
I have additional information and stories about the family and welcome any additional information about them.
I would also love to share and correspond with any "cousins" who are also researching. Thank you.

Hi Jodie, so wonderful to hear from you! I have been researching a great deal, with little results, on where the Copelands' were from originally. I have traced back to Adeline and Charlie's parents, Joseph Howard Copeland and Ollie Ann Harvey, with the possibility of Joe's father being a Tom Copeland, but I cannot prove it. Do you have any additional information on the Copelands? I think I have properly researched the Harvey name and if all is correct, back to the 1500's in England. I would love to chat with you as I don't know much about my TN side other than what my grandmother related to me. I visit the area every few years and need to plan another trip. I was very close to my "third" cousins in Alabama, where my grandmother eventually married, and I maintain contact with most of them. There are quite a few of us and I'm sure they would love to know more about our grandparents. Take care and hope to talk to you very soon!

Hello Nan, I research the Copeland line every now and then and always hit the same brick wall. Joseph Copeland. My sister did a lot of research and seemed to hit the same brick wall. My grandmother, Naomi Copeland Hinkle used to have a photograph of a woman wearing an Indian headdress. I could swear she told us it was one of our relatives and we always believed that was why Grandma had such dark skin and dark hair. However no Indian connections have been found. Ollie Ann Harvey was married to a man named Oscar before she married Joseph. After Joseph died she lived with my Great Grandfather, Charles Minor Copeland, and his wife Dollie, nee Harwood. My understanding is there was a lot of friction between the 2 women. There was a story my sister learned from Ray Copeland's daughter and basically that story was about Ollie burning down the local whorehouse because Joseph spent to much time there.
My Copeland relatives became something of a scandal when shortly after Dollie Copeland died Charles married the "mother's helper" Lilah. Lilah was 17 and very close in age to Charles' eldest son, Ray. My sister has letters that were written by John Copeland, another of Charles' sons about how embarrassed the kids were to go to High School and what a "scandal" they were. This would have been around 1920.
I have also come to the conclusion that Thomas Copeland in GA is the father of Joseph. But there are no records so everything is circumstantial. I do not have my notes in front of me but I believe that Joseph had a brother named Daniel.
A few years ago I was googling to see what sort of lead might pop up when I came across a post from someone about their Spangler relatives that included a Daniel Copeland. I thought I had printed it out but it would appear I did not and the story is stuck somewhere on my computer that crashed last year. So I have been periodically searching Google for this story. I had found it in 2013 when I was in Alaska visiting my sister so I thought I could find it again. And that is how I came across you post and ended up joining Family Tree Circles.

I am going to look for it some more but let me tell you the gist of it. The Spangler Family was also from Georgia. I believe Teague Spangler was the father's name. He went to TN then when his daughters were older they followed. In this story Daniel Copeland had married Nancy Spangler. They lived with Nancy's father who's name I believe was Teague. One night the father comes home and is angry that supper is not ready so he starts hitting Nancy. Daniel jumped in and grabbed a gun and hit the father with it and the father died. Daniel ended up going to jail for 7 or 8 years. While he was in jail Nancy divorced him. When Daniel got out of jail he remarried but his former wife would come over late at night and try to get Daniel to sleep with her right in front of Daniel's current wife.

My Great Uncle John used to tell my Mom the Copelands were "tetched" so I had a strange feeling this Daniel Copeland might be one of my relatives.

I am still looking for the story. I will get back with you soon!

Hey, Jodie, going out on a limb here in hopes that familytreecircles is still active and that you might have the same email address. We corresponded about 8 years ago about our Copeland ancestors. Hopefully you receive this and I will hear from you? Nancy Walsh
