Families of Boothbay Harbor, Maine

Journal by coyote1

I'm interested in information from those of you who have connections to families in the Boothbay Harbor area including surrounding communities of Boothbay, East Boothbay, Southport, Barter's Island, Wiscasset, Edgecomb, and beyond. I'm especially interested in my surname but am also interested in information on most every family surname from the early days in the area until now.

If you have any information of families in and around Boothbay Harbor, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Bob Wylie

My maternal grandmother was a PREBLE. Her father was Granville PREBLE (1839-1902) of Boothbay. The Preble family was in the Boothbay area since the early 1700's. My grandmother Annie Gertrude PREBLE was born in Somerville, MA (1874). Early generatins of Preble have relations with a number of local Boothbay families including SHERMAN, WYLIE, GRAY, REED, KNIGHT, and others.

I do not not know why Granville moved the family from Boothbay to Massachusetts, but it was around 1870. His first child died in 1869 (in Boothbay) that might have something to do with why they moved.

Jemima Preble (dau of Abraham and ? Tilden of York, York, ME) was married to Eleazer Rhoades/Rhoads in 1710. I am descended from their son, Samuel, who married Abigail Thorp. They lived in MA after Jemima married Eleazer.

Does anyone have this family?

Hi Bob Wyllie. I have Campbells that lived in Maine and the initial Campbells that came to Maine, Robert and Mary, Mary's maiden name was Wyllie.

I would love to hear if you have these same people in your tree.

My husband has Boothbay Harbor Campbells on his mother's side. In fact, mother's side has Joseph (1762-1822) and Jane Reed twice through a son and daughter, Elizabeth (1794-1873). Elizabeth produced a daughter, Margaret, who married Thomas Orne. I believe that Elizabeth never married. Does anyone know about this Elizabeth Campbell?

Hi Bob- I am Deacon Samuel Giles' gg-grandson from Aurora, ME 1811-1910. Are you related to Lee and Ken Wiley that in 1982 resided in Yucca Valley, CA? Love to correspond with anyone with ancestors in Maine area. I'm trying to find the real story of how my Giles branch got to British America in the 1600's I'm strongly assuming from somewhere in England and whether my branch is indeed mentioned in Vinton's book of 1864 (it seems to me they have to be).
