Florence Jonas / Ryder, is Jonas her maiden name or middle name? where and when approx. was she born?

by JTomlins on 2014-12-12 14:40:45

Either Jonas or Ryder would have been her maiden name. She would have been born late 1800-early 1900. My grandma was born 1901. that's all I know.

by wizard28 on 2014-12-12 17:51:13

what was your grandma's christen, maiden and married name. Who did she marry ?

by JTomlins on 2014-12-12 22:15:38

Mary Jane (known as Jean) Ryder and she married John (Jack) Fenton. Married in 1928 I think. As far as I know her parents weren't married and there were 2 surnames but I don't know which was which. And no body talks about it (or knows). And those who could have passed on. There was another sister Winifred Ryder who died a spinster in Christchurch, NZ in the 1980's but I have no information on her either.

Hmm. That 's definately the family. I know either Henry or William (possibly both) were KIA. And I was sure my grandparents were married. It was the 2nd June I think and I know that Jean died on my 10th birthday 16th May 1978 and Jack (John) Fenton was the 6th June 1978 and he spent their 50th (surely not their 60th, could've been their 55th) wedding anniversary alone. I'm thinking that the person I knew as Aunty Win may have been Wilhelmina.

Are these the two deaths

1978/31308 Fenton Jack Henry 24 April 1910
1978/31176 Fenton Mary Ann Jane 14 May 1906

Marriage records only got to 1934 it is possible they married after this date, if you get hold of the birth for one of their children it may give you the marriage date. I'm not sure what information is on a NZ Birth I know that UK & Aust. have marriage details of parents.

There is an interesting article on Henry in papers past
Papers Past, Auckalns Star, Volume LXXIII, Issue 179 31 July 1942, Page 6, Hid in Cupboard

The story relates to Henry Joseph Eyder(Ryder) Jonas, absentee soldier, arrested by military police after being found hiding in cupboard of the home of Mrs Marshall and Mrs Crimmins and her husband, in Gibraltar Crescent, in court they denied that they knew he was in the house, Henry had been given one days leave in 29 April and never returned.

Yes that's them.
Their youngest child was Ruth Fenton (married name Spiers) born 11th April 1947 died 2010
Other siblings are Maureen, Leslea, June, Beverly and Valerie. My mother Ruth was the youngest child.

It's also possible that the oldest two siblings (Gertrude and Flora) may have been in Tasmania as I heard a few years ago that there's a family link there somewhere. My problem is 1. no money to get certificates and 2. no living relatives to ask and only disjointed information to work off.

by asheppard on 2014-12-14 00:54:06

No family Bibles or papers, birth certificate for your mother with any information with her parents marriage??

by JTomlins on 2014-12-14 01:53:27

No sadly. My Aunties are all very elderly now and no-one know where anything is. And my grandparents died a long time ago now. On my mothers death cert it gives her mothers maiden name as Ryder and her being married. And I've just worked out that my Aunty June was born in 1932 and she was the eldest so it is possible they married a little late to save embarrassment.

Hi
Im sorry I am so late to pick this up.

All the your grandmothers brothers and sisters were called Jonas as the father Edward Arthur Ryder was not registered on the birth certs at the time as I dont think he was a very good father and an even worse husband and spent most of his time in gaol so I think Clara did most of it alone.
I am only assuming from what I know that she was better off with him in prison.

He remarried 2x and had another 3 kids. He was any better with either of those women either.
Georgina one of his wives divorced him on a case of adulty and cruelty and I have read what that consisted of and it was at the extreme end of being a nasty human.

Clara died in 1938 and was buried in Bromley

Florence was the 2nd Florence in the family I think, as the first one passed away (i think at birth) in 1903

Florence was born in 1904

James Arthur Ryder was my Great Grandfather, it looks like you and I are cousins :)

I have added the info I have, might repeat some that has been written
