The first step in tracing your Family Tree is to talk to ALL your living relatives. They have a wealth of information. Write it all down in a neat and understandable manner, or use software into which you can enter the information. You must have dates, the more exact the better. (For example, there are probably hundreds if not thousands of Malcolm Clarkes born in Dorset.) When you are satisfied that you have all the information you can possibly get from your living relatives, then try looking up old newspaper Personal Announcements for birth, death & marriage announcements. Visit the graves of all known deceased relatives - there is a lot of information on headstones. Now you are ready to start looking on the Net. There are plenty of free websites that have detailed information to fill in your gaps.
