Phyllis was a dressmaker and remained a widow for most of her life as her husband died only after 1 year of marriage. She spent time nursing sick realtives and working for the local church in Roseville. Her main hobby was gardening. She died of an aneurism in her garden.

Jack was apprenticed to his father in the bootmaking industry despite the fact that his teachers wanted him to continue at school having excelled in his Intermediate Certificate Examinations. During WWII Jack joined up and worked as a wardsman in hospitals. He also trained as a chiropodist aand eventually took over the bootmaking business upon the death of his mother.
