Journal by artyfartyvee

WHO WERE THE PARENTS OF JAMES TREASURE? (Father of Leuey Treasure bap. 8 Oct 1771 - Stoke Lane)

When and where was he born?

The Facts

1. A James TREASURE buried at Stoke Lane, Somerset on 18 Mar 1788, was noted as being 57 years, therefore suggesting he was born c.1731. ? FreeREG.

The Candidates

1. A James TREASURE was baptised in Leigh on Mendip, 5 Sep 1731. Parents - Joseph & Hester (nee West) who married at Leigh on Mendip, 5 Jul 1731. Only one other sibling baptised ? Grace 18 Nov 1733 in Leigh on Mendip. Hester Treasure buried 26 Mar 1770, Leigh on Mendip. Burial not found for Joseph ? he may have died soon after birth of second child as no other children were baptised - FreeREG.

Verdict: Unlikely to be our James.

2. A James TREASURE was baptised in Stoke Lane, 23 Feb1731. Parents - John & Elizabeth - IGI. John Treasure married Elizabeth Sneling at Stoke Lane 1723 ? PR. A John Treasure also baptised the following Treasure children in Stoke Lane: John 1722 - PR, Jane 4 May 1724 - PR, Elizabeth 11 Jun 1728 - PR, John 19 Jul 1730 ? IGI, Josias 4 Jul 1736 - bur. 9 Mar 1737 - PR, Jossies 1739 bur. 13 Mar 1825 - PR.

A John Treasure bur. 18 Jan 1801 age 74 years could be John bap. 19 Jul 1730 and suggests that he was born a little earlier than IGI recorded baptism. NB. Baptism dates are not necessarily indicative of birth dates.

John Treasure bap. 19 Jul 1730 had a son James Treasure bap. 31 Dec 1780 Stoke Lane. This James Treasure (of Stoke Lane) married Hannah Lewis at Downhead, 18 Feb 1806 - FreeREG.

We know that our Levi Treasure (of Stoke Lane) married Betty Trusler at Downhead, 13 Feb 1806 - FreeREG. A witness to this marriage was Hannah Lewis. This could suggest that Levi was cousin to James Treasure who married Hannah Lewis. She may also have witnessed the marriage because she was a second cousin of Betty Trusler.

Verdict: Most likely to be our James.
