hi neich,
John Hedgeland, (often spelt without the E), the one armed shepherd was drowned in the Whareama River and his body caught on a snag near Ica Station. They seem to think that he 'was despondent' at the time. He was buried near the homestead at Ica Station (formed in 1864 by the Rev J. C. Andrew)

He was the 4th of 9 known children of William HEDGELAND (1792-1867, died Tiverton) & of Mary SYMES (1796-1885, died Exeter)
John married on 14 April 1866 in Wairau, Blenheim to Janet McNAUGHT (1844-1924) and had 9 (known) children, some in Wellington I think. The youngest, Reuben Bramwell Hedgland, was born 14 Dec 1883, 2 months after his fathers death

* Janet remarried in Sep 1844 to Ward PARKER (1828-1893)

I will write a journal on him and let you know what I find

many thanks, hope to meet up with the Gt Grandson to join me to Ica, oddily enough, my late husband used to work on this station long before I came to NZ.. have visited it, now have a better reason to go... I may go on Devon rootsweb site never know may be some relations still over there!!! All I had to go on to find the grave was, buried near a Water Tank on a hill possibly near Alfredton! No wonder the family never found him at Pori or other places... was at Ica.. thanks.
