He was an old Oamaru boy and both in the South and in Wanganui was a keen soldier. His family has now given two members to the Empire, as a brother who also went away from Wanganui, has been killed in action. - Private Baine's military record shows him as missing early after his arrival at Gallipoli. Two days later he is reported as safe and back at his unit. This occurred about three months before his missing in action report. Probably separated during a night patrol.

The pamphlet published on the occasion of the dedication of the bells includes the following: 'The main ideas governing the gift and installation of the Wellington War Memorial carillon are that it shall be regarded essentially as a memorial to the New Zealanders who gave their lives in the Great War that it shall commemorate their deeds by the giving of special recitals on the anniversaries of the principal engagements in which they fell, and, the carillon being the greatest instrument in existence for the cultivation of the folksong and national and religious airs, it shall help to rekindle among New Zealanders the love of old England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and of their own land, and the ideals for which so many New Zealanders died - the triumph of right over wrong, and the establishment of peace and goodwill amongst men.' Brother of Lindsay Kingscote Grenville Bull (11/11), who also served during World War I (link shows photo of the 2 brothers with their mother) - Left New Zealand with his brother in the Main Body as a private in the 6th Squadron W.M.R., and was wounded in company with so many others on August 8th at Chunuk Bair, dying before the dressing station could be reached. Hearing no official news, his family felt convinced that he was still alive, and according to one report in a hospital at Birmingham. Search was accordingly made in the hope that he might yet be discovered, but the Court of Enquiry found that he had been killed in action.
