This is becoming a mystery.

I am told that Jessie married as serviceman. I do not know if this was an English man or other nationality. I believe that they married after the war, this would be the first world war, I guess.

Are there any special marriage records for persons married on military bases?

I will have to do some more probing from living relatives.

If they married during the war and up until the serviceman was discharged, the record of the marriage including a copy of the registration and address of spouse would be submitted to base records. The reason being is that there would be a new next of kin declared and so also the part pay would be allotted to the new wife.

This is probably not her but the only Jessie Irving I have found.

You have come up trumps again. There is a deliamna as there is a marriage to a Goodman which matches the death, however, there is a child 4 years later matching surname Leary.

I found the death from Ancestry and I guess the source was not as good as I thought it was. I believe this to be a different Jessie Irving who married Goodman and died in Glyndwr.

I have a realiable source naming the children of Jessie Irving and the find for Frederick Victor looks like it is the match I have been looking for. However, the marriage of Jessie Irving remains a mystery for the time being. I shall now go looking for the other child, Lillian. I believe she is older than Victor.

I think I've looked at every Leary ever born in England between 1920 and 1930 without any luck.
So now I'm onto the marriages, Let's hope Lillian wasn't her second forename like Victor's. Next I'll check deaths using the spousal name. Might be lucky if she's deceased, I'll stick with Lancashire and only show you the probables

Joseph Leary was born the last quarter of 1896 in Anscoats Lancashire from what I can gather he lived with his uncle and aunt Joseph LEARY and Hannah LEARY, nee HEATH from at least the age of 4 in Ardwick, Manchester. On his marriage Registration he gives his father's name as Loid[sic]
He Joined the Manchester Regiment in 1915. He was dangerously wounded in France, however recovered then Medically discharged as no longer fit for war, on the 22 May 1918. His home address then was 71 Liverton St., Ardwick.

I'll let you go through all his service records. They are not very clear. Most are scraps of paper with blotched and faded ink. 21 pages after that there are other Leary's.

I have had a little stroke of luck also.

I have found that Jessie Irving went to St John, New Brunswick, Canada arriving 9 April 1920 on ship Scandivania. I have seen a declaration and believe this may have left Liverpool on 9 December 1919.

Jessie Irving and Joseph Leary married on 12 April 1920. Margaret Lillian Leary was born in 1922.

I have found that both Jessie and Margaret returned to Liverpool on ship Montcalre arriving on 3 May 2924. I can only assume that Joseph returned at a similar time with his regiment.

Frederick was born in 1925

Jessie, Lillian and Frederick returned back to St John, New Brunswick, Canada on ship Montoyal arriving 18 April 1925.

Jessie, Margaret and Frederick return back from Montreal, Quebec to Liverpool on Duchess of Bedford arriving 27 August 1930. Again, there is no record of Joseph returning with them.

Joseph Leary was discharged from the Toxteth Park Hospital in Liverpool on 22 May 1918. " dangerously wounded, no longer fit for war." If he went to Canada it was under his own steam. Have a look through his service records again, he was granted a pension on the 15 May 1918. The document is from The Ministry of Pensions, Royal Hospital, Chelsea. It also says the pension was up for review. The last document in his file is his discharge. Service No. 24728.

Thanks for the information. I have attempted to view the WWI records, yet again another subscription site.

It is possible that Josephs parents emmigrated to Canada. His father is named as Loid on the transscrip but looking at the original document, it could easily be T or a F instead of the L, when I looked first I thought it was Fred. Similary for the name of mother Ellen Pixton, looking at the record It looks more like Pimpton.

From the information I have gained, Joseph was already in Canada and paid for Jessie Irving fare to sail to Canada in 1920.

Jessie and daughter returned to UK in 1924. Jessie gave birth to Frederick before returning to Canada in 1925. Possible she was pregnant before leaving Canada. Frederick born November 1924, Jessie arrive on 3 May 1924. Likely that Joseph remained in Canada.

Jessie and her two children returned back to UK in 1930. Likely that Joseph remained in Canada.

The original records are held at the National Archives in Kew. I don't know where you are, I gather you're not close.
I've gathered together 25 documents, the first 15 were available on Ancestry, the further 10 I found quite by accident when I noticed there were no service records and a couple of other documents which should have been in his file. As far as his army medical records, I gather they were sent to the hospital for I see a request for a receipt, I believe they would have been retained by the hospital.
These records are scant and very hard to read. But at least they exist unlike many which were burnt in ww2.

Emma & Chelsey it does appear that we are related via your great grandmother and my grandmother, they were sisters.

Jessie had two children, Margaret Lillian was born in Toronto, Canada in 1922 and Frederick Victor Leary was born 11 November 1924 in Manchester. Frederick first 5 years was in Canada, he returned with his mother and sister on 27th August 1930.

I believe he married Hannah Peel in 1950. If this is the case, then he had 4 children.

Frederick died in 1981.

Joseph was born in 1896. I am not sure what happen to his parents, so he lived with his Aunt and Uncle. He fought in the war was was injured, he was pensioned off. I have quite a lot of military records. He lived in Ardwick on 23 May 1918. I went to Canada and was resident on 9th December 1919.

He paid the fare for Jessie to travel to Canada where they were married on 12 April 1920 in York, Ontario.

Their first child was Margaret Lillian Leary born in 1922.

Jessie and Margaret return to the UK 3 May 1924. Jessie gave birth to Frederick Victor on 11 November 1924. Jessie, Margaret and Frederick returned to Canada on 9th April 1925. They returned without Joseph on 27th August 1930.

I know nothing more about Joseph.
