. database has Samuel Hamout . only Samuel found to have died at this date . so it was probably this person. Note the two different spellings in the report
Wellington Independent, 27 Dec 1870 A seaman named Samuel hayward, one of the crew of the Zingara, died rather suddenly yesterday. He had only shipped in Dunedin about a week ago. Yesterday he took suddenly ill and the second officer got the poor fellow into a cab with the object of taking him to the hospital but on the road up, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon he expired.
* At the Colonial Hospital, on Tuesday, an inquest was held before Dr Johnston and a respectable jury, on the body of Samuel Haywood, the seaman of the Zingari, who died suddenly while being conveyed to the hospital on the previous day. The evidence of Dr Kemp and of a seaman and the second officer of the brig was taken and the verdict "Died by the visitation of God" returned. There was nothing in the evidence to warrant any other verdict. The deceased, it appeared, had been shipped at Dunedin and had complained of illness more or less since that time, a period of about ten days; and from the evidence of Dr Kemp it appeared that the deceased had suffered from chest complaint, recent traces being still visible in both lungs. The deceased was a native of Liverpool and was twenty-eight years of age.

. son of William Ledger Holmes & Elizabeth O'Neill. A SUDDEN DEATH
A painful feeling was created in cricketing and athletic circles yesterday morning by the announcement of the death of William Holmes, connected with the Customs, Wellington. It was quite unexpected by the majority of deceased's friends and acquaintances. On Saturday afternoon he took part in a cricket match played on the Basin Reserve, between the Wellington Club and Wellington College, when he made the highest bowling average. An attack of inflammation of the bowels set in and Drs France and Henry's serves were invoked. But medical skill was unavailing and deceased expired at his mother's residence, Wellington Terrace, yesterday morning, aged 26 years. He was the eldest son of the late William Holmes, one of the early settlers of Wellington and was connected with the Customs for 11 years, being employed the greater part of the time as a landing waiter. His younger brother died of pleurisy a year ago and his father succumbed to an attack of inflammation of the bowels between three and four years ago.

HONOUR, Arthur Edwin 10 July 1891 aged 3
HONOUR, Richard Rodney 6 Dec 1876 aged 11 months
. 2 of the sons of Walter Henry Honour (1843-1915) & Emma Sheppard (1845-1910)
* extracts from Emma Honour .. Emma Sheppard was born 1845 in London. In 1870, Emma’s father Joseph was a 'bath chair proprietor', later a 'cabman'. Emma’s sister Annie remembered playing with children in the Royal Mews. Their mother was Mary Chitson. For several generations her family was associated with the Caslon Printing and Machinery Company. Emma married Walter Henry Honour, a widowed shoemaker, in London in 1870 and in 1871 they were living in Kensington with Emma’s sister Annie Shepherd and two-week-old Emma Ann. The family emigrated to America. They found the climate unsuitable and returned to London in March 1875. In June 1875 they emigrated to Wellington aboard the clipper Rodney, one of the last sailing ships built for the Colonial passenger trade to Australasia.
Emma, Walter and their growing family - Richard Rodney (1876), George Albert (1877), Lizzie Esther (1881), Frances Annie (1883) and Arthur Edwin (1888) – lived in a freehold property with entrances on Marjoribanks and Stafford Streets, in Mount Victoria, Wellington. The house was described as a 'four room cottage with two fireplaces and patent W.C.'. Walter worked as a bootmaker from home. Walter came under some religious or temperance influence which made him a bigot and he told the sons that if they would not keep his rules of no drink, no cards and no bright modern music they could get out, which they did.” In 1894, 21 year old Walter Jnr was M.C. at a lively 'Dorothy Quadrille Assembly' with fancy dress, music and dancing. Emma, Walter and the younger children moved to Tawa Flat in early 1895. One of their homes there was the old schoolhouse, now a private house.
In July 1895 Walter snr was arrested for shooting and wounding a neighbours 'vicious' horse that had trespassed onto his Tawa Flat property, worried it could injure his daughters. This was backed up by other settlers, and the case was dismissed.
Emma died at Tawa Flat in Oct 1910 aged 65 and is buried at Porirua. Walter died Dec 1915 and is buried Karori.

HOWDEN, William 19 April 1887 aged 28
. It is with regret that we record the fatal termination of the attack of typhoid fever which seized Mr William Howden, accountant in the head office of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, a few days ago. Death took place at the residence of Mr Coulton, his brother-in-law, in Pirie-street, at 8.45 o'clock this morning. Deceased was confined to his bed for eight days. For some days previously he had felt unwell, but it was not until yesterday week that he was obliged to lie up. As we explained a few days ago, he attended at the Basin Reserve on Easter Monday for the purpose of performing the secretarial duties in connection with the Druids Fete, but before he had been on the ground many minutes he was obliged to take a cab and drive home. He immediately took to his bed, from which he never rose again. Deceased was 28 years of age and unmarried. He arrived in the colony about 10 years ago and at once secured a position in the Wellington branch of the Colonial Bank, which he resigned in order to become accountant in the head office of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Deceased was a leading member of the Excelsior Lodge of Druids. He acted as Secretary for over seven years and at one time occupied the position of Arch Druid, being Past Arch Druid at the time of his death. He was a man who was popular with all who knew him and his many friends will regret to hear of his early death. His remains will be interred on Thursday with Druidic honours.
