James snr I think married Jane Morton. He was a ships joiner and is buried in Northern Cemetary, Dunedin. I cant find mention of Jane after about 1911
James Jnr was an engineer, but so far no more after about 1911

Would love to know of any military records or existing relatives in Dunedin

James married Mrs Jane Morton (nee Forsyth) on Xmas Day 1889. He was 52 & Jane was 36.

Jane died 1 Nov 1897 aged 44 and was buried in Plot 8, Block 15 at Northern Cemetery.

James's first wife, also a Jane (maiden name not looked for yet) had died 7 Oct 1887 in Mosgiel aged 44. She was buried in the plot first.

James died 19 July 1914 in Duddingston, North East Valley, Dunedin and is buried with them both

sorry,
1st Jane who died 1887 was aged 50 (birth about 1837), born in Scotland and arrived in NZ about 1880

2nd Jane (Forsyth/Morton) was 44 (birth about 1853)

James was born in Glasgow about 1834 and arrived in NZ about 1880, so probably with first wife

If you know the ship they arrived on, it may give the names of any children who can be traced

Maria McNaught, second daughter of James McNaught, married at Duddingstone, North East Valley on 3 Jan 1906 to James Dalziel Brown (1863-1946) of Balclutha.
No children found for them

James remarried in 1926 to Annie Knox Davie (1869-1950) and is buried with her at Andersons Bay

son James McNaught, was the chief engineer on inter-island steamers.
It appears that he was a passenger on the ill-fated steamship, ss "Waratah" which sailed out of Sydney on her second and last, Homeward voyage to London. She called into Melbourne on 1 July & Adelaide on 7 July 1909. There were 92 New Zealanders on board, 43 women, 27 men and 22 children.

Ten hours after sailing out of Durban Harbour the Waratah was seen by the steamer 'Clan Macintyre' also on its way to London via Durban. At 6am 27 July, they exchanged greetings and weather conditions at latitude at 31.36 S & longitude 29.58 E. The Waratah crossed from starboard to the port bow, was out of sight at 9.30am and then followed the great storm, cyclonic in character, with squalls of hurricane force which raged unabated for about 15 hours.

The Waratah and her 211 people on board disappeared without a trace.

The wreck was discovered 14 July 1999 in an upright position, resting on the ocean bed
