VAUGHAN, OFLAHERTY

Journal by littlemircles

If anyone else has the VAUGHAN - FLAHERTY in their family, I would be grateful for any help to fill some gaps. Since my first posting I have found a few things and added or corrected them now.

John VAUGHAN b. May 1842 Cork Ireland, death 1910 South Island NZ. His wife Julia O'CONNOR. b. abt 1852 Cork Ireland, d. 1912 Dunedin NZ, arrived in Otago on the Zealandia 1875 at Port Chalmers. Along with two of their children.

John VAUGHAN b. Feb 1872 Cork Ireland, d. Jul 1938 Wellington NZ. He never married, died a very sick man in Wellington.

Mary (Maria) VAUGHAM b. 1873 Cork Ireland, arrived on the Zealandia 1875, never married, died 1944 Christchurch. Later she spent time in Wellington in and out of court. Also in trouble with the police because of drink.
She gave birth to a daughter 1895.

Philip VAUGHAN b. 1875 NZ, d. 1955 NZ. He never married, his body was given over to medical research and his ashes scattered over his mother's grave in Dunedin.

Margaret VAUGHAN b. 1878 , not registered, never married, death 1962 Christchurch. Had three still born children

Helena VAUGHAN b. Dec 1879, died 7 weeks later...Jan 1880.

Eliza VAUGHAN b. ?? , not registered, marriage and death...still a big mystery.
May have been born approx. very late 1880 - early 1881.

Five of the children were placed in 1882 in the Caversham Boys and Girls Industrial School at Lookout Point Dunedin, for the rest of their young life or until the age of 21years as was stated in the law of abandon children.

Their father John was charged many times for not contributing to the welfare of his children. Once he was given hard labour for a month, preferring drink over helping the children.

Julia had also given her body over to medical research after death.

The mystery part is, there is a Helena VAUGHAN - who maybe Eliza using her dead sisters name b. abt late 1880, d. 1962 Auckland NZ., no registration found. Over the years she changed her name both Christian - Lena- Alma-Helen- Helena and surnames to fit the circumstances. At death she was Helena OFLAHERTY AKA VAUGHAN. She married Patrick FLAHERTY in 1915 Blenheim, he was born in 1877 Kerry Ireland, arrived in NZ 1887 with his parents,7 siblings, last brother was born here (9 children). Patrick joined the Army in 1915, married Helena a few weeks later and then shipped overseas until discharged in Wellington April 1918, moved to Omarua, never got divorced, never remarried and died 1937.

Helena now changing her name to VAUGHAN had one daughter Alma Lena VAUGHAN b. 1919 NZ, d. 1995 NZ under the name Maureen Alma Lena BURNE. Like her mother changed her names around.

Any help would be appreciated to fill in the gaps especially the last part.

Hi there, I am a grand daughter of Alma Lena Burne. She was born Alma Lena Vaughan and Burne was her married name. She did like to use Maureen. She also had a cousin Lena Alma in Nelson.

My father is one of Alma Lena's six children. He remembers his Grandmother Helena.

I will check if you are interested but off the top of my head:

Helena became an O'Flaherty through marriage. Dad does not remember his Grandad as Helena & John did not remain married.

Hi many thanks for answering me, though you have thrown up more questions.
1. Who is the cousin in Nelson - surname
2. Lena Vaughan married Patrick Joseph OFlaherty or Flaherty 1915. She did not marry John, if so then it is not registered anywhere. Used both names throughout her life.
3. Do you know which Vaughan family she belongs too and where did she come from.
John Vaughan came from Ireland and so did his sister Mary (Maria), the other four siblings where born here.
All the Vaughan families I have come across have been checked and eliminated.
Would so much appreciate any further ideas, many thanks.

Just to clarify, Helena Vaughan was also the name of John Vaughans sister born in 1880 who died at 7 weeks old in NZ. I am just checking with an aunt regarding the Nelson cousin and also Helenas birth details etc.

Interestingly my nana spelt her maiden name Vaughn... confusing. So Helena was a Vaughan/Vaughn before meeting John Vaughan who also had a sister born around the same time as her who died as an infant. Sounds odd!!

Helena married Patrick Joseph Flaherty in 1915 however she is also listed as his wife in 1913 when he enlisted in the RNZ Navy? Possibly just his partner. He was born in Crosshaven Ireland in 1883.
