great grand father dissapearance after 1911 from Neb.

Journal by nannyb715

Great Grandfather Campbell ALEXANDER (Dads side) his parents, David and Sarah Alexander father and mother of Campbell ALEXANDER

David Hamilton ALEXANDER and Sarah Hamilton were married Janurary 25, 1856 at Parish Church of Muirkirk Scotland. They were both raised in an orphanage in Scotland and when they were old enough that they had to leave the orphanage, they were married in 1868 they came to America. They first settled in Frostburg, Maryland and from there to Harlan County, Nebraska and on to Hayes County, Nebraska in 1885. They had eleven children: David Hamilton, James Watson, Joseph Hamilton, Hugh Howard, Agnes Lemon, William McMilliam, ALEXANDER Black, Campbell, Robert, plus two that I do not have names for. The records show that David H. and his sons David H., James Watson, Campbell and ALEXANDER Black all took out 80 acres land grants each, homesteads and receiving patents from Grover Cleveland in 1891. James Watson eventually bought them all out. He worked the land until 1912 and was then elected to county clerk, three terms in Hayes County, Nebraska where he finished in expired term as a sheriff. James Watson went to Alabama and graduated from the Alabama School of Mines and for a few years was engaged in the mining business in an executive capacity. James Watson married Elizabeth Johnston Barclay on March 23, 1894 at Blossburg, Alabama. In searching for Campbell ALEXANDER, I have been told he was buried in Canada, or Washington, or else where, I have no idea. Campbell ALEXANDER was born on July 17, 1869-1870 depending on where its written up. He was born in Galston, Ayeshire Scotland. A scottish imigrant who came to the states by working his way through Nova Scovia. On the Ships. Heres where we lose sight of Campbell ALEXANDER after he sells out to James, app. April 1909 where most of the brothers moved to Alabama, Washington, and Cananda. My cousin Ray and myself are the ones doing the searching, we are two of the first three grandchildren of Campbells. We've come to the conclusion that maybe Campbell remarried, maybe this is why we can't find where he is buried. One is the census info. for 1930 in Missouri that shows a mother with two sons by the name of Erila ALEXANDER, she was in Boone, Missouri in 1930 census. The oldest son is also Campbell ALEXANDER and the other son is Tom ALEXANDER. The only other information is with the SSN death records showing a Campbell ALEXANDER who died in 1978 and is buried in St. Louis, Missouri. This is the only Campbell ALEXANDER we have found in the U.S. records. This just about has to be the son of Campbell ALEXANDER who passed in 1978. Whatever happened to Campbell ALEXANDER is still a mystery. Have recently found Erila is No relation to this fam.

Are you sure the kids travelled into the USA with both parents i'm sure i came across the immigration record and ship manifest and Sarah was on her own with the kids might be wrong though i'm sure i found census records as well with her on her own.

anyway maybe he died back in Scotland during a visit to family or something James and Elizabeth were going back and forth from the USA to Scotland a bit to see my family.

I'll have a look at some sites for you.

good luck

Found one record Campbell Alexander mother maiden name Hamilton dies between 1910 - 2006 in Scotland will check it when have credit on site.

I am afraid I started all this. Nannyb715 is correct. We know about Campbell Alexander, most of his siblings; decendants and ancestry.

Barkie is correct, father came on a ship earlier than the mother and children. If you want a copy of the family history and what is known, emil me at mondaysr@bellsouth.net.

I can send every thing from summaries to the notes on each parent and the siblings of Campbell Alexander to a complete GEDCOM of the family tree with notes.

What we do not know is WHAT HAPPENED TO CAMPBELL ALEXANDER after he and his wife Agnes seperated in Cardiff, Jefferson County, Alabama in about 1902.

We know that he spent some time in NE; children of his brother James Watson Alexander report that "several of the brothers went to Canada." Children of Hugh Howard Alexander (younger brother) were born in Ferie, Canada.

But so far no record of any life after about 1909; to include the US 1910 census.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found a campbell alexander who died before 1940 in Scotland his mother's name is comming up as maiden name Hamilton i am checking it out will get back to you soon.

Does anyone know what happend to James Watson Alexander's wife Elizabeth Barclay she is my great great aunt i know she died at 32 in Hayes Center and is buried there, i assumed it was something to do with the birth of the child Francis ? (her father was Francis Barclay)

She and James came to Scotland at least once to visit family and one of their children (their first their daughter Elizabeth) was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
I also found out Francis Alexander died from accidental gunshot wounds in Hayes Center around 1920 any info on this ?

Also does anyone know anything about how James met Elizabeth in Alabama was she living their herself or with family ? i am trying to track some missing Barclay's and i think some went the USA.

thanks

G.Barclay

Barkie,

I have all the information you ask for concerning James Watson and Elizabeth. She is Elizabeth Johnson Barclay, dob: 16 Feb 1869, Shawstonhead, Lenark, Scotland; dod: 17 feb 1901, Hayes County, NE.

The child you ask about is her first, Elizabeth (Bessie) Johnson Alexander, dob 9 Feb 1895. Because of the feelings both mother and father had for the "old country," it was decided that Elizabeth Barclay Alexander would return to the home of her parents family to give birth. She then returned. James Watson Alexander remained in the US.

You really need to see the material I have gathered; which comes from James Watson's great-granddaughter. Joan still lives in Hayes Center, Hayes County, NE.

Perhaps you should contact me direct with an address where I can mail a packet of GEDCOM; PAF file: and written history on the family.

What I have starts with me, but makes the connection to Campbell (my great-grandfather)and his parents David Alexander and Sarah Hamilton Alexander. And back beyound there. And some decendants.

I would like to add your branch as you decend from James Watson and Elizabeth Alexander to my data. If you would be willing to share please do.

My email is mondaysr@bellsouth.net. I am a 1st cousin to nannyb715. And she and I exchange email on a regular basis. She is the one who introduced me to this site.
