Looking for MEDLEY of Wellington
Hi I am trying to trace information about my great-great grandmother, Hephzibah Medley nee Perry.
My Grandfather was Donald Graeme Yule, son of Alexander Yule and Laura Caroline Medley. They were married on 20/10/1886 and lived in Featherston. I understand that Laura was a teacher there.
Laura was the daughter of Samuel Medley & Hephzibah Perry who were married in Lambeth, London in 1852.
Samuel was a chemist (& organist) but died on the voyage to NZ about 1860 or 1862? I don't know on which boat they came to NZ.
Hephzibah arrived in NZ as a widow with 3 children. Laura (approx 2yo) had an older brother, Ernest Samuel and an older sister, name unknown.
Family stories indicate that Hephzibah established a dame school in Wellington.
I would be very grateful for any information about what happened to Hephzibah, did she re-marry, have more children, return to the UK & when did she die? I am also interested to know her DOB & the name of her parents, as there is another story of a possible familial connection to Sir Walter Scott...and she appears to be a missing link.
Thanks in advance
:)

hello,
do you know that Ernest Samuel Medley (1857/8-1914) was in Cromwell in 1908?
Just thought his mother may have been down in that district
I believe the older sister may have been Florence Mary Medley (1859-1928)
Hephzibah MEDLEY remarried in 1879 to Charles WOOLCOCK
Wow, that was a quick response, thank you.
No, I did not know about Ernest being in Cromwell. I will investigate further, thank you.
Thank you for info also re Florence.
I am a little confused because the name Hephzibah is rather unusual & I see she was alive from 1854-1916, which means she can't possibly be the Hephzibah who marries Samuel in 1852.
Do you know if there is any connection between these two women?
Ok, I will follow up the Charles Woolcock connection.
May I ask, are you also related to Hephzibah?
the unknown daughter HAS to be Florence Mary Medley because:
(Florence died 14 Aug 1929, sorry)
Florence married Claude Edward RYLAND in 1884
their known children were:
1885 - 1948 Claude Frederick Ryland
1888 - 1957 Florence Hephzibah Ryland
1890 - 1893 Hazel Fanny Ryland
1893 - 1956 Franklin Gilbert Ryland
1898 - 1991 Mary Beatrice Ryland
1901 - 2006 Ernest Samuel Medley Ryland
William John GANDY + Hephzibah MEDLEY (1854-1916) married 26 Feb 1874 at St Johns Presyterian Church, Willis st, Wellington.
The witnesses were: C. J. S. Haselden & Florence Medley
What is the connection between Florence & Hephzibah, who married William Gandy? Are they cousins? Or did Hephzibah have a 3rd daughter called Hephzibah?
Hephzibah Medley arrived into Wellington 9 Aug 1863 from London on the QUEEN OF THE AVON
her children with her (& their approx age at travel):
Hephzibah Medley (1854-1916) - aged 9
Ernest Samuel Medley (1858-1914) - aged 5
Florence Mary Medley (1859-1929) - aged 4
Laura Caroline Medley (1862-1933) - aged 1
no, I am not related to this family, just a researcher of (& for) Kiwis :)
In 1873 Hephzibah Medley was teacher at the newly established school in Ohiro Road, Brooklyn, Wellington
Hephzibah Medley (1829-1900) remarried to Charles Woolcock as above
Charles had first married Mary Jane LOVELL in Nelson in 1865
my research was made easy by finding this posting here on Family Tree Circles
CHARLES WOOLCOCK, written 2010
Charles's first marriage ended in divorce as did he & Hephzibah
Hephzibah was buried on 25 Feb 1900 as Hephzibah MEDLEY aged 70, in Plot 30L, PUBLIC section at Karori cemetery, Wellington
Wow, thank you so much, this information has been very helpful...and it is wonderful to get the clarification re the 2nd Hephzibah Medley, of whose existence we were unaware.
I have shared with my mother and she is delighted to learn more about Hephzibah and the family. I guess we will have track back some more in the UK to establish the finer details of her birth.
I live in Wellington, so will definitely be paying a visit to the plot @ Karori Cemetery.
It's amazing, all the synchronicities and connections that these facts reveal.
Thank you again :)
Wow, I've just been directed here by my sister looking for information about our family tree. Ernest Samuel medley ryland was my great grandfather. If you have any other information about him and his family from England, or NZ for that matter we'd be very interested. Thankyou
