Looking for Norton of Hukerenui NZ

Query by Dolina

I am a direct descendant of Alice Elizabeth Smith, born 28 March 1882 her Mother was Florence Maud Smith born c 1864 Halstead, Essex England. No father recorded on Alice's birth certificate.
Alice was born before Florence married Edward Rowley on 26 Feb 1885 in the Parsonage of Te Kopuru, they settled in Hukerenui.
Alice married Alfred Nobes 6 January 1898 in Whangarei.Alice had 12 children of which my Father was one. Family names of SMITH, NOBES,ROWLEY, NORTON & LANGMAN were used for birth registrations of her children. I know Alice had later suitors and married John William Langman of Matapouri.
One man whom Alice lived with was Edward Hugh NORTON d. 1963 age 89. Does anyone know anything about his life or children her fathered?

hi Dolina,
The best place to look would be at NZ Birth, Death & Marriages (which is down today for maintenance) but click the link later this afternoon or from there on and write in the details as required to find any info you may need.
I will also help you look if you like and will contact you when I find anything

Hi,No (My)Edward Rowley b.1852-d.1935 did have 12 children, his first born son was Edward John b.1884-d.1908 drowned, so he didn't have children. There were also a William Frederick b.1886,Newmyre Garabaldi b.1888,Joel Vicar. b.1892, Henry Jonathan b.1898,Albert Ernest b 1902,Frank Thomas b.1904.
Except for the last two who may have been too young to have a son born in 1915,your Grandfather may have been a son of the others.
At least two sons farmed in the Hukerenui area, so I will see what else I can find for you , I live in the general area.

Hi Dolina,

Edward Hugh Norton was born 24 May 1874 in Taumarere, Northland, 7th of 7 children of Jeremiah Crowell NORTON (1819-1897) & his second wife, Ann Clara SIMONS (1847-1914) who married in New Zealand 5 July 1862 in Auckland

- his father Jeremiah Crowell Norton was born in Edgartown, on Martha's Vineyard, Dukes, Massachusetts, himself a son of Shubael Claghorn (1794-1871) & Mary Davis Polly (1794-1874) NORTON.

Jeremiah was a Captain of a Whaling Ship which arrived in Auckland in mid 1800s (he was charged in Oct 1868 in breach of the Merchant Shipping Act in not having paid the wages legally due to his seamen). He was about 28 years older than Ann and when he died on 31 August 1897 he was 78. He is buried in Plot 11, Row 2 at Parua Bay Cemetery, Whangarei Heads Rd, Parua Bay. Ann was a daughter of Walter SIMON & Catherine WIFFEN. Two years after Jeremiah died Ann remarried (in 1899) to Joseph TIMPERLEY (1839-1914). IMPORTANT NOTE Joseph Timperley was previously married to an Elizabeth ??. A daughter of theirs, Ethel Timperley, was to marry William Henry Norton in 1891, a son of Jeremiah & Ann Norton. THEREFORE: Ann married her sons father in law, thereby making her William's mother & also his step mother in law!! :)
- Ann died in May & Joseph in Nov of 1914

Edward Hugh Norton was married twice. The 1st one I am still researching, the 2nd wife was Daisy THOMAS (1897-1951) whom he married in 1920 in Kamo, Auckland. They had a son, Edward Hugh Norton in 1921 who lived for 14 days. Further research needed for any other children of Edward

He also served in WWI as Private 40356 with the NZEF, 23rd Reinforcements E Company.
- His NEXT OF KIN was listed as his sister Mrs Anne Eleanor McMasters of Maromaku, via Whangarei (this was James Henry McMasters, an American & her 2nd husband)
- Edward was called up for duty in August 1915 and his occupation was listed as a 'Gumdigger'
- He was reported as a 'Severly Wounded Case' in the hospital progress report in November 1917
- He returned wounded into Auckland in Oct 1918

Edward Hugh Norton died on 28 April 1963 aged 89 and is buried RSA Block Ten Plot 412 Maunu Cemetery, Whangarei. His wife Daisy had died on 7 December 1951 aged 54 and is buried in Plot 30, Row 1 at Kaurihohore Cemetery, Kauri

Thanks,
Alice Elizabeth Rowley m Alfred Nobes 6 January 1898 in Whangarei, one son Alfred Joel Nobes was born in 1898, Alfred deserted Alice and their son. She did not gain a Decree Absolute until 5 March 1913.

Alice went to house-keep for Edward Hugh Norton (1874-1963). During her defacto relationship with Edward Hugh seven children were conceived.BDM records have Alice Elizabeth Rowley Mother, no Father recorded. Alfred Joel Nobes had a name change and lived all his life as Edward William Norton (1898- 1965)

The seven childreen were,Annie Florence Rowley (1901 -1972)m Symmans,Beatrice Maud Rowley Nobes (1902-1976)m Dobson,John Jeramiah Croyle Rowley (1904-1980),Frederick Henry Rowley (1906-1977),Hazel Margaret May Rowley (1908-1990)m Snell, Mervyn Garaboldi Nobes/Langman (1910-1994) George Langman (1913-1995).
John's name has the Norton connection, all the school age children used the surname of Norton on school records at Hukerenui district schools until 1913 when in May they registered as Langman at Matapouri School.
Still researching family connections but we know Alice with these eight children went on to marry John William Langman on 20 march 1913 and live the rest of her life at Matapouri with him.

hi dolina,
was looking for rowleys and have placed my grandfather, Edward Joseph bn 1915, he was the eldest son of Nehmiah Garabaldi Rowley and Elsie Tyler Whiteman.
Nehmias parents in turn where Edward Rowley and Florence Smith, apparently my gfather took over the farm in Hukeranui from his father, as he was the eldest son.

My wife is a direct descendant of Jeremiah Crowell Norton. This has been really interesting to find this information here. Thomas(not William)Henry Norton (born 1869 died 1952)is her g-grandfather and Ethel Timperley was her g-grandmother. The marriage ended in divorce. I understood Jeremiah's mother's name was Polly Davis Norton (Massachusetts records) and the family documents list Jeremiah's second wife as Anna. Jeremiah we believe was a bigamist as he was already married in Martha's Vineyard and there is no record of a divorce and his wife, Margaret (nee Vincent) was still alive at the time of his marriage in NZ.
Interesting that Ann(a) married Joseph Timperley. We didn't know that. His first wife was Elizabeth Ann Howe - my wife's gg-grandmother.

As far as Irene, Phyllis & Daisy go. It may be that there is some relationship through Thomas Henry's younger brother William (born 1871).

Re Ann(a) Clara Simons - are you sure about her birth year? We have it as 1842.

by Dolina on 2012-02-10 21:46:36

Re Anna Clara Simons - I have no proof of her birth, other than what I read on this site and others.Mistakes can be copied many times to appear as fact.
The confusion between Thomas Henry Norton & William Henry Norton an example.

Ann Clara Simons, whose father Walter was a fencible, the family arrived in Nz as here.
Name SIMONS, Walter Vessel SIR GEORGE SEYMOUR: Arrived:Auckland Nov 26 1847 Notes 1 woman, 3 children under 10 (of the 54th foot from Cambridge). Royal New Zealand Fencibles. (including Ann)
After some time in Howick Auckland he went to the Bay of islands, where according to the Russell court papers, held in the Auckland Archives (index on the shelf) he was a pretty aggresive man. his daughter Clara had a child to John jay Priar,Constance, who died. Clara then entered into the marriage with Jeremiah Norton,Ann had another child in 1887 with no father named, before marrying Joseph Timperley in 1899.

Hi there
I have not much knowledge of my family history and am just beginning the research journey. Based on scarce information only of my grandparents names and these ancestry sites I have found the following:
I believe that my father was a son of John Jeremiah Croyle Langman (Norton) and Laurine Mary Langman. Johns parents Edward Hugh Norton and Alice Elizabeth Nobes, Langman (Rowley). Edwards parents Jeremiah Crowell Norton and Ann Clara Norton, Temperley (Simmons).

If anyone has any information which can help me uncover my lineage and where I come from it would be truly appreciated ♡♡♡
