NOTES to find the connection between Joseph Loubere (aka Joseph Lever) and Emma
* 16 May 1879, An important judgment was delivered by the Resident magistrate at Wellington recently. Some time since Mr Joseph Loubere, of Manners-street, purchased a quantity of goods from Teesdale. These goods had been sold to Teesdale by one Pallant, who at the time was in insolvent circumstances. Two days after the sale to Teesdale, Pallant filed a deed of arrangement, which his creditors refused to accept. Whereupon Pallant at once filed a declaration of insolvency. The sale to Teesdale was subsequently declared fraudulent. The trustee in Pallant's estate then sued Loubere. The sole question then was, was Loubere an innocent and bona fide purchaser? This was answered in the negative because he had not purchased the property openly, but in the backroom of a warehouse and at a price from 50 to 100 per cent below the marketable value. Judgement was therefore given against Loubere for £100 and costs. (this is substantial - equivalent in 2013 to $16,000)
* 28 April 1880, I, Joseph Loubere, having returned from Sydney and my travels in the North Island, announce to the public that I have completed my arrangements for receiving a stock of first-class Bacon, Hams and Cheese; also, for a supply of carcase Mutton, Beef, Pork, Sausages, Tongues &c., &c. The prices I sell at will defy competition. Come and see for yourselves and bring cash. I guarantee my supply of Butcher meat to be splendid and I have no connection with Boiling-Down Establishments. Legs of Mutton, Beef, Chops and Steaks, 2d per lb. J. Loubere, Manners-street.
