William Joseph Cantwell born 3/4/1901 was a Catholic Priest on enlistment into the Australian Army in Nov 1940, becoming a Captain on enlistment as a Catholic Chaplain. He departed Australia for the Middle East on the first convoy carrying the 6th Division, being Chaplain to an Artillery Regiment. My parents Alphonsus Cantwell and Dorothy Day brought forward their wedding to Boxing Day 1940 due to his imminent departure. William returned with the 6th Division from the Middle East and then served with the 6th in New Guinea.
