I am a daughter of Herbert George Oakley Rainbow. With reference to the above posting on Thomas Henry Rainbow whose wife was Mary Ethel Caulton, do you (or does anyone) have any definitive proof that Thomas and Mary separated, as my understanding is that this is simply conjecture? My father told the family he was raised by his grandfather after his mother died when he was young - true; Mary died young of TB - however he thought his father (or grandfather, who raised him as his father was heartbroken and appears to have left his children possibly with his parents?) may have been named William. He told me his mother - could it have been his grandmother Eleanor? - was a music teacher from South Africa named Elsie Wood(s). I am not a geneologist so any information that can shed more light on this family mystery would be much appreciated. Thanks

A second query... I have recently met, here in North Queensland where I now live, a local woman whose grandfather is also named Thomas Rainbow - is he likely to be Thomas Victor Rainbow, or another branch of the surname altogether?

Mary Ethel Rainbow (always known as "Mamie") and her husband Thomas Henry Rainbow separated but were never divorced. She was my grandmother (and yours.) They had their four offspring in Hastings where Thomas continued to work, and Mamie moved to Auckland with the two eldest children, Walter and Mildred, leaving Ilma and Dawn with her mother. She had Herbert George Oakley Rainbow and Norma Caulton Rainbow in Auckland. As they were born within a marriage they were not illegitimate. I spent time with Mamie's sister, great-Aunt Eleanor, a noted singer and cultured lady, who had lived with her husband for six years in South Africa before they returned to Hastings. She confirmed to me the above information regarding her sister Mamie.
