* On 15 May 1915 Ernie was shot 3 times by a machine gun in a place they called the Daisy Patch. One bullet went through his ear into his head.
After seeing his injuries he was presumed dead and thrown onto the dead heap. A while later someone heard some moaning and dragged him off the dead heap. Later he was again presumed dead and put on the heap only for one more person to discover he was still alive.
He was transferred to a hospital island off the coast then home on the first ship that came back to NZ, which then turned around to take first reinforcements. A lot of wounded died on beaches waiting to get transferred to island or home from lack of treatment, heat and disease.
Back in NZ, he moved to Martinborough and got a soldier settlement ballot farm which he named 'Seddulbahir'
Ernie died at 88 with the bullet still lodged in his brain. If the bullet had been 1 cm either way, 4 generations would not be here.
