Margaret Robertson who married Frederick william bird sturm 1893,is in my family tree, her parents were john Robertson and Margaret carwell/Caldwell, but on the birth cert the mother is listed as McDonald for some reason.i can give you more of the Robertson side if you like

I'm interested to know what details appear on Margaret's birth certificate. Information appearing on birth and death certificates was only reliable as the informants knowledge of the family. It's also possible you may have the wrong birth certificate.

but on the death certs of
janet the mother is McDonald
john the mother is McDonald
james the mother is Caldwell
david the mother is Caldwell
peter have not found death cert, but marriage states mother as carwell
Donald have not found death cert but marriage cert states mother as carwell

margarets parents are john Robertson and Margaret carwell married 1848
Caldwell/carwell/cardwell are often confused in Scottish records much like muir and mair,johns death in 1875 states his wife as Margaret cardwell
margarets death in 1897 states her maiden name as Caldwell
johns wife Margaret is listed as being born in Greenock, Renfrew,in 1851,1861,1871,1881 census 1891 she listed as Glasgow Lanarkshire

the census would seem to indicate that Margaret Robertson was a Caldwell as her census birth place is constant in all but one census also Margaret {Robertson} sturm , named one of her children Margaret carwell Robertson sturm which is another pointer to the mother being carwell/Caldwell.

if there was another marriage I don't think the later children would be using carwell as the their mothers name on marriage or death certs although I still don't know why the grandmother is stating McDonald on certs as is the father occasionally?

Margaret Robertson is still with the family in the 1891 census and is unmarried and listed as a machinist

I know that Margaret sturm is from this family as my grandfather stayed with them when he came to Australia from scotland 1911 to 1914 and my uncle was born mitcham in Adelaide while he was here, he also mentioned that the sturms were saving money for the son to buy a horse to join the lighthorse brigade which he did as is shown in his war record.

I'm sure these details will help other members researching this family line. It is strange the grandmother and father both named the mother as MCDONALD and there must be a reason why.
