Exeter record office show James dad came from the village near Cheriton called Spreyton living in Green Cottage. The small town North Tawton seems to be where the previous generation dropped anchor.

Robert & Sarah had another daughter affectionately called Polly she married a Newton Abbot man called Perkins.Sadly she died two years later in childbirth around the time most of the family were leaving for Canada. John & Prescilla had a small farm on the edge of Ashburton where they had a son Douglas who died aged 2 again shortly befor the exodus

Hi Rattler

Thanks for the extra information. I had seen a Polly on someone's tree but obviously was reluctant to add her as they had no sources. I made that mistake with Mary Anne Cockran whom I thought was the wife of James Tancock (4 x g grandparents), it was only whilst I had access to some parish records that I discovered my error and that in fact Ann Howard was James wife.

Thanks again

Hi I am Georginas mother, my gradfather was Rueben.
Georgina wanted me to get involved with this as she thinks maybe the names will mean more to me than her.
Rueben married Claudia Brewer daughter Edna married John Macpherson they had 4 kids. Lillian ( my mother) married Dave Milne they had 6, kids. Ada married Emil Lapointe and had 3 kids. Rueben and Claudia had just the one son William who never married. All Ruebens kids have passed on. Hope to keep in touch and hear more about the family in the UK. Ruth

In 1997 I lived next door to a family by the name of Tancock at
(21?)Applegarth Avenue, Highweek, Newton Abbot, S.Devon which is close to the other places mentioned. He was in the fire service.
Hope that is useful to someone, though of course they might have moved on by now.

Tadders here again reading Rattlers info is interesting as my family (Tancock) I refer to further above were from the Bow/Crediton/North Tawton area - indeed my Grandmother was living in Sandford when she passed away.

My uncle and his father (both named William) both lived in Barnstaple having I belive moved up there from Bow.

Tadders may find the history of Admiral John Tancock (born Ashburton, died Truro) interesting. His father Samuel was a tailor in North Tawton before moving to Ashburton so may well be connected to your family. John had a spectacular boost to his career when as a very young captain 12 French merchant ships surrendered to him after their armed escort fled .His prize money share must have been very tasty

Thanks Rattler - facinating and have been doing some reading on this!

Hello Shellyb

I have what seems to be very simular names.

Robert Tancock married Sarah Anne Prowse daughter of William and Mary Prowse.
Robert and Sarah had a daughter Ada Who like Georgina said Married a Parsons John Henry Parsons who was the son of Harry and Carolyn Parsons both from St. Budeaux, Devonport or at least that is what is on the pictures I have. Ada and John Henry Parsons at least at the end of thier lives lived in Prince Rupert B.C. Canada. I have pictures of both Robert and Sarah Tancock as well as Sarah's parents William and Mary Prowse.

Rattler

I haven't yet heard back from Gwahl but I'm hoping we both will. I just wanted to say I think its fantastic that your brother remembers a visit from a Mr Parsons and his occuptation. My great aunt, who is now 93, has given me so many personal stories of the family that you would never find in any records. She is the great grand daughter of Mary Ann Tancock.

by rattler on 2011-10-27 04:30:52

Roberts daughter nicknamed Poly was born in Ashburton 1879 her real name was Mary J Tancock, she is first documented in the 1881 census. In the 1901 census she had moved to Croydon London where she was a servant to a family who describe themselves as sack manufacturers. She then moved back to Devon where she met and married a George Perkins.
As i am 78 i can remember visits from some of the Canadian family but not as clearly as my older brother

I am also a descendant from George Ponsford Tancock. I think he was x3 g grandparent. I am living in South Australia. My father has a family history book of the Tancock family, starting with Richard & Ruth Tancock & their descendants. I would love any further information or photos any 1 has.

by shellyb on 2012-07-31 06:57:03

Hi Lauren88, so sorry only just seen your post. Would you still like information and photos on the Tancock family, I'm more than happy to share.
