John Adolphus MONK & Phoebe Jane OWLETT - NZ

Journal by ngairedith

John Adolphus MONK
was born 22 March 1808 in Kent, England.
Phoebe Jane OWLETT
was base born in 1810 in Surrey, England to Phebe Owlett (1795-)

JOHN ADOLPHUS & PHOEBE JANE married about 1830 in England and had 6 children before emigrating into Wellington from Gravesend England on the BIRMAN
They departed 13 Oct 1841, arrived 1 March 1842 and settled in Makara, Wellington
NOTE The following taken from the BIRMAN, link above:
John Monk is well mentioned in Surgeon Motherwell's diary; he appears to have been a bit of a stirrer, which surgeon Motherwell blames on the fact that he was "sent out at the expense of his parish". This obviously made him the lowest of the low! Incredible the hardships they faced just to get here, and then arriving in the country as it was then, unlikely ever to see England again, and yet they just got on with it, and forged a place for themselves and their families here as best they could. The family eventually settled in Makara. Apparently John and Phoebe's children spoke better Maori than they could speak English, which is understandable.
* John was a sawyer in Porirua, Wellington (thanks to Marcus who pointed out the typo. I had lawyer)

... Hi, I was reading your entry on the children of John MONK & Phoebe OWLETT and wonder about John Monk being a lawyer. How did you come to this conclusion?

However, I am mostly interested in his the activities of his son William, especially from the years 1858 till his marriage in 1865. Would you have any idea of what he did during this time? Any information you have would be much appreciated.

If you can help Marcusy with any info on William please leave a comment below

Hi, This info is great, you have done some amazing research which is incredibly useful. There are one or two minor mistakes amongst it which I can correct, but it is an great bit of work. Phoebe, George's daughter married a Robert Greig, not Creig, and Alfred Monk married Emma Maria Hawkins, not Hawking. Also there was another daughter born to Eleanor Barrow Snr., Eleanor (Nellie) Barrow (Jnr) was born in 1947 and died in 1905. She married Joe Corbett Bryant.
