the passengers on the EMMA COLVIN, Nelson 1856

Journal by ngairedith

The three-masted, 560 ton ship, EMMA COLVIN departed from London, under the command of Captain Nicholson, on 9 March 1856, arriving in Nelson 23 June 1856, a journey of 106 days

known PASSENGERS to date
* passengers were found (& still being found) from various sources. If you know of others, please leave in comments
* most appear to have been from around Northamptonshire areas
* once ages are confirmed in brackets, they may differ from the ages on passenger list which were written at time of booking passage in 1855 and as ages were often altered to suit immigration requirements, threat them as approx only
* like names grouped together does not necessarily mean they were related
* As always, treat the following as a guide only to your own research

19 July 1856 We understand that all the immigrants lately arrived on the Emma Colvin have found employment and that until they procured private engagements the Government found them work at six shillings a day.

Nelson Examiner, 30 June 1856
DESERTERS ex "Emma Colvin"

To The Nelson District Constables And Others
A REWARD of £5 per man will be paid by the undersigned upon the apprehension of any of the Deserters from the Ship 'Emma Colvin' against whom warrants have been issued. And notice is hereby given, that any party or parties harbouring or employing the same will be proceeded against with the utmost rigour of the law. J. NICHOLSON, Commander "Emma Colvin"

Colonist, 19 Jan 1858 Immigration Office Nelson. The IMMIGRANTS by the Ships 'Inchinnan' and 'Emma Colvin', who have not paid their passage money, are requested to call at this office on or before Saturday, the 6th February next and make arrangements for the payment of the same or Legal proceedings will be taken against them. By order of the Commissioners, Alfred Greenfield, Immigration Secretary.

Colonist, 4 May 1859
Of the amount shown to be due for passage money, namely, £2401 13s 10d., only £277 8s remains due in respect of immigrants whose passage money was advance on the security of residents in the province; all the remainder being due from person whose passages were prepaid on their own security. These were immigrants sent out in the Emma Colvin, Cresswell and other vessels by the late Emigration Agent, Mr Macdonald. Great difficulty is experienced in recovering payment from this last class of immigrants - a difficulty not attributable in any to the Emigration Agent, but inherent in that system itself, increased in some degree by the withdrawal of the extended powers given to the Resident Magistrate's Court, which prevented larger amounts that £20 being sued for. Steps are being taken against these persons in the Resident Magistrate's Court for the recovery of the smaller sums, though, as might have been expected, some of the immigrants, after application for the money, have left the province in order to avoid being summoned.
* The NZ £1 in 1860 is roughly equivalent today to $130

The widow, Mrs Harriet Louisa Wates (nee Lees 1849-1910, mother of 13) married him on 2 June 1910 at North-East Valley, Unfortunately, a month later, Harriet was killed when run down by a gig on George Street. The Inquest revealed to her relatives that Mrs Jennens was sill alive in Nelson. So, in Oct 1910, there began an extraordinary case of bigamy and trying to prove if Thomas Jennens was still alive. This, of course, means that Marmaduke & Minnie eventually managed to find someone to marry them.

Mrs Alldridge and her husband, who died a number of years ago, were Northamptonshire people. In 1859 they settled at Wakapuaka where they resided for some twenty years when they came to live in town, but soon after that Mr Alldridge died, whereupon the widow, who had a large family to maintain, had to struggle on their behalf. That she succeeded was proved by her bringing up her young family with credit to herself and by the esteem in which she and they were held. Colonist, 18 Sep 1918 MEMORIES Of The KELLY GANG. The death of Mr William Brooks at Morrinsville recently removes yet another of the rapidly diminishing band of pioneer settlers. Born in Northamptonshire in 1827, Mr Brooks, when about nineteen, joined the Imperial Forces with three of his brothers. A previous employer, however, bought Mr Brooks out of the army, but two of the brothers were killed in the Crimean war . Upon landing Mr Brooks left his wife and family in the depot in the 'hop country' (Nelson) and set out with a mate to look for work, which was plentiful. He worked for a farmer for about four years and then left to take up pit sawing work on his own account. Afterwards Mr Brooks went prospecting for gold with three companions, but only struck small patches and not in payable quantities. Mr Brooks ultimately became an all round contractor in the northern portion of the South island. He supplied the timber for the bridges and railroad on the first railway line connected with the Westport coalmines. He was the first man to take a bullock team through from Nelson to Westport and the extent of this undertaking can be gauged when it is stated that at that time there were neither roads nor bridges and the Buller river had to be negotiated. At the time of the opening of the diggings at Wakamarina, near Havelock, Mr Brooks was engaged in road-making at Nelson and, thinking it a good chance of disposing of his bullocks to advantage, he travelled through to the diggings, When there he spent some hours on the Maungatapu and it was whilst on the river bank that he and his companion saw the Maungatapu murderers - "The Kelly Gang" - cleaning their pistols .. more here
NOTE the 'Kelly Gang' was the Burgess-Kelly Gang of Nelson 1866, as opposed to the Australian Ned Kelly gang of 1878-1880
* Sarah & William are buried in Morrinsville

NOTES
* Edwin Hare Dashwood (1825-1862), son of Capt. Edwin Sandys Dashwood & Emily Hare, was educated at a military school in Germany, obtained an ensigncy in the 10th Regiment of Foot (North Lincolnshire) and served in India before resigning emigrating to Nelson. Wikipedia Encyclopedia describes Edwin as an 'alcoholic sheep farmer from the South Island of New Zealand'. His ancestors include Sir Francis Dashwood (1708-1781), best remembered in history as the founder of the Hellfire Club rather than for his term as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Edwin purchased a farm in Motueka and a sheep run in the Awatere, Blenheim. He returned to England in 1852, married and returned to Nelson. He again returned to England in 1859 where he succeeded as 7th Baronet and died there
* There was an Ann & Francis Brotherton, with child Francis Brotherton, who arrived into Dunedin on the Chile on 7 Dec 1861. Was this the same Ann? Did she return to England in 1859 with the Dashwoods perhaps as nanny to their 3 Nelson born sons? It would mean however, that she was probably already married in 1856 (name Brotherton)

REBECCA died 22 July 1907
Marlborough Express, 23 July 1907 Mrs Rebecca Carvell, wife of Mr Eli Carvell, died at the residence of her husband in Stephenson Street yesterday at about 1 o'clock. The deceased was one of the oldest residents of Blenheim and at the time of her death was in her seventy-sixth year. She came out to the Colonies in company with her husband in the Emma Colvin and landed in Nelson in 1856, coming on to the Wairau about five years later, where her home has since been. She was, until her health failed, prominently connected with the Methodist Church, with which body she was an earnest and effective Christian worker. About two years ago, when visiting the Marlborough Exhibition, she was seized with sudden illness and had been unable to leave her home since. Of late she had been so weak and frail as to need constant attendance and yesterday, during the brief absence of her adopted daughter from her room, she quietly passed away. About a year ago Mr and Mrs Carvell celebrated their golden wedding. The husband, who survives, is at present very ill in the Wairau Hospital. There are no children, but Mrs J. Simson is an adopted daughter.
ELI died 2 months after her on 18 Sep 1908.
Marlborough Express, 20 Sep 1907 Mr E. Carvell, who died at the Wairau Hospital yesterday, was a very old resident of Blenheim. In the year 1856 he came out with his late wife to New Zealand and shortly afterwards came on to Blenheim, where he had since resided. Many years ago he owned the whole of the block upon which his three concrete houses stand and which is partly bounded by two streets, Everden and Carvell Streets. The ground for these two streets was given to the Council bye the deceased and his name having been given to one of them he will always be remembered. Mr Carvell had been closely associated with the Methodist Church since his advent to Blenheim and for 33 years was a member of the Rechabite order. Only about 18 months ago he and his late wife, whose death separated them by only about two months, celebrated their golden wedding. At the time of his death Mr Carvell was 73 years of age. Colonist, 13 July 1891 PAINFUL ACCIDENT - We are informed that Mr Thomas Newberry(sic), a settler residing at Brightwater, had the misfortune while cutting manuka, to have the ball of the eye pierced through by a berry striking it with terrific force. The unfortunate man had no idea at the time that the hurt was dangerous and kept the eye bandaged up, expecting all would be well in a few days; however, as the sight of the other eye became weak, he found that he had completely lost the sight of the wound one, Great sympathy is felt for Mr Newberry, as although well advanced in years, his sight up to the time of the accident was remarkably good.

HARRY died 27 Aug 1868
Nelson Examiner, 29 Aug 1868 FATAL ACCIDENT - A man named Henry Powell lost his life at the Moutere, on Thursday evening. The deceased was riding in a horse and cart, after dark we imagine, and in crossing a bridge at a turn in the road, he kept too close on one side, which caused the timber of which the bridge was constructed to tilt up and overturn the cart into the ditch. Powell was found yesterday morning by some men going to their work quite dead, with the cart resting on his chest. Powell was a married man without family. This accident must show the District Road Board that the bridges under their charge are of faulty construction, for had this not been the case in respect of the one in question, Powell would not have lost his life there.

On 23 Aug 1856 The Emma Colvin sailed from Nelson for Shanghai

NZ Herald, 21 Dec 1863 The Emma Colvin is wrecked
The s.s. Kangaroo arrived in the Manukau from Sydney, with cattle, yesterday afternoon with news of the total wreck of the ship Emma Colvin, at New Caledonia, on the 12th. All hands were saved and have been transferred to Sydney in the La Bonite, French transport vessel. The Emma Colvin was bound from Sydney to Port de France, under the command of Captain G. Kring. The following passengers were on board: Miss Albert, Miss McEvey, Messrs Kearney, Williams, Peasdell, Joubert and two in the steerage. Her cargo consisted of 62 tons of coal and 292 head of cattle, all of which, we believe, are insured. The vessel had almost arrive at her destination, when the weather became very thick and rainy. On the 13th November, at 4.30 a.m, it being the mate's watch, the vessel struck a detached reef about 50 miles south-est of Port de France, by the strong current setting in that direction. At daylight the boats were launched and a few articles, such as wearing apparel and provisions, were hastily thrown in. All landed in safety on an uninhabited island. Captain Kring, Mr Joubert and the female passengers, immediately started in the ship's longboat and reached Port de France in safety. The French steamer Coetlogon, on receiving information of the disaster, got up steam, proceeded to the island, rescued the crew and conveyed them to New Caledonia and from thence they were conveyed to Sydney by the French transport Bonite. The wreck was last seen on the 14th ultimo at daylight and was completely broken up and all the live stock drowned.
