Trying to find where I came from

Journal by elecmectek

I have no clue how to do this but I would like to know where my last name came from.
I cannot ask people in my family since I am 38 years old and just now found out the my whole life as a child was a lie. See my moms retarded and my dad does not speak to me.

I know my last name is White, my grandfathers last name on my dads side is White, my grandmothers last name on my dads side is greathouse.

My grandfathers last name on my moms side is Coxx and my grandmothers last name on my moms side is Bishop.

Can someone please tell me where to start. I know the White's and Greathouse's are from West Virginia and the Bishop's are from PA. I am not sure where Coxx is from.

Dear Elecmectek, Hi there. A very warm welcome to FamilyTreeCircles.

I'll try and give you as many tips as I can. When researching one's family tree, you work backwards from yourself. If family circumstances are a bit difficult, it is then adviseable to go sideways in search of information.

All children are innocent and no-one's life is a lie. Where there is life there is hope.

I'll create surname wiki pages for BISHOP, COX(X), GREATHOUSE and WHITE.

You may wish to think about starting to record what data you have very meticulously so as to avoid backtracking and repeating your searches. There are many good free family tree software packages available, and/or you could enter your data in a nice family tree book if you like. Read some of my journals, or type in FREE and NEWBIES in the top right-hand corner of FamilyTreeCircles.

If you need any help, let us all know.

Have a great day and remember that our harshest critics can sometimes be ourselves.

Where in West Virginia were your family names from? I've got lots of Bishop info from West Virginia, and Virginia, as well as Kentucky. More information, if you have it, any at all, may help narrow down what lines your family is from. We may even have some Greathouse names as well, it sounds familiar.

My Bishop family settled in Lancaster Co., Pa. Some of them later moved to southwest Va. to what is now Scott Co., Va. If you have more names, I may be able to help you if you are in my family tree.
