BIOGRAPHY of Lawrence Martin Cantwell
At the age of thirty years, Lawrence Martin Cantwell married Mary Elizabeth Hayes on the 11th November 1901 at Singleton, New South Wales. Both of them were Catholics.
Lawrence Martin and Mary traveled up from Singleton to Queensland to live; exact year and details of their lives before this are not known.
In Queensland, they took up residence on a property which Lawrence Martin bought for an unknown number of pounds. It comprised 640 acres and was situated near a railway siding known as ?Rywung?, near Chinchilla. Lawrence Martin and Mary?s youngest son, Louis Henry, often referred to his childhood home as ?Rywung?, so it is probable that the property was also given this name.
On ?Rywung?, Lawrence Martin carried on the business of farming, dairying and raising cattle.
Lawrence Martin Cantwell?s father, Patrick, had been a gold miner. He died when Lawrence Martin was a child.
Lawrence Martin stood 6 ft. 6 inches in his socks. It was a family joke that he had to sit during his wedding photograph, or he would have been out of the picture. Lawrence?s wife, Mary, was not very tall. He had brown hair and blue eyes, and sported a large moustache all his adult life. He owned a violin, and could play it very well. He played at country dances as well as at family gatherings at home on ?Rywung?.
In their old age, Lawrence Martin and Mary went to live with their daughter, Molly, on her property ?Monmouth?. This was the place where Lawrence Martin died of a coronary, one year before Mary, in 1945. He is buried in Chinchilla cemetery under an inscribed headstone.
