Notes for GEORGE CUPITT:
George joined the 102nd. Regiment 14-1-1793 just 3 weeks before his 15th birthday. He could not read or write but did learn to sign his name.
He migrated to Australia with his wife on "Ganges" transporting 203 Irish convicts acting as a guard for 1shilling per day as a private. George transfered between regiments In NSW to avoid the 4 year turn around of the military.
He was discharged on 24-9-1823 and chose a land grant in leiu of a pension. Governor Brisbane's letter 28-10-1823 granting 100 cres within surveyed lands was lost and it took until 1830 after much correspondence that Governor Darling granted 100 acres at Castlereigh "Cupitt's Farm"
During the wait George purchased 32 rods of land from Rev. Samuel Marsden for ?12.4.6 in George Street Windsor. This parcel of land remained with the family for 157 years until sold by Jack Holman in 1981.
The Cupitt farm produced wheat for the colony and notes in the 1824 Sydney Gazette recorded tenders from Mary Cupitt to supply 100 bushells @ six shillings and six pence and Mr. George Cupitt to supply 100 bushells at the same rate.
"In the name of God, Amen, I George Cupitt of the District of Evan in the colony of NSW, Farmer, being very sick and weak of Body but perfect mind and memory and knowing that it is appointed of all men once to die, do make this my last Will and Testament. First of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I commend to the earth to be burried in decent christian berrial at the discretion of my Executors and as touching such worldly estate herewith it has pleased God to bless me in the following manner" He made his son George executer of his will and bequeathed the three properties that he had acquired to his three youngest children Eliza, James and Matilda with the proviso that on their deaths that the properties would then pass to his three grandsons George, Thomas and James the eldest of George and sara's brood.


Notes for MARY WICKS:
Mary gave evidence at a trial in 1811 where Jane harding had thrown herself into Cockle Bay ( Darling Harbour) 30-11-1811 and drowned. Jane had borrowed 6/- from Mary leaving a gold ring as security and the next day borrowed a second 6/- leaving a shawl as security and used the money to buy liquor.
Cockle bay was used by convicts and their jailors to gather wattle for the walls of their huts. They found in the mud "tasty animals which they called cockles". In 1827 the area was renamed Darling Harbour in honour of Sir Ralf Darling.

Mary and George are burried in St. Matthews Cof E Windsor. There is a family vault.

The church was commisioned by Governor MacQuarie. The first building was condemned and the bricks used to cronstruct a wall in Thompson Square Windsor. Convict francis greenway was the comissioned to build the current Church which opened in 1822.
The cemetry was first used in 1810.

3. GEORGE3 CUPITT (GEORGE2, AUSTIN1) was born 28 Dec 1808, and died 1875. He married SOPHIA UPTON 10 Oct 1831, daughter of THOMAS UPTON and SARAH PIGG. She was born 26 Apr 1816, and died 02 Apr 1884.

Notes for GEORGE CUPITT:
In 1859 George paid his sister Matilda ?100 for the George Street parcel of land in Windsor. This parcel was to have passed to Matilda's son James on here death only James died at age 13. There were two dwellings erected on the land.
In 1867 Windsor had the biggest flood ever recorded. (Flood debris was found in the rafters of the three story building diagonally oposite the old picture theatre.) Only the two hiils of St. Matthews church and the Court House were above water. A Mrs. Smith hung out a white flag from her window at dawn after spending the night in water with the furniture banging aginst the family. George saw the flag and got a boat and with the assistance of the local school teacher rescued the family. The story was published in the Richmon-Windsor Gazette.

For the last 20 years of her life the widow Sophia lived with ther daughter Annie Rutter nee Holman at Little church Street Windsor.
She died aged 87.


Notes for ALFRED JAMES HOLMAN:
Alfred James Holman was a carpenter as was his father. He was born in Camden Town in the County of Middlesea and baptised at St. Pancras Church London and migrated to Australia in 1871. He married Sophia Cupitt in Orange NSW in the Trinity Church Of England on 30th. November 1876. He was aged 28. Their first child was stillborn and after the birth of their second child they moved from Orange to Windsor and moved into one of the houses on the Cupitt land in George Street. Alfred built addittional houses and replaced those built by his fatherinlaw.
"Cupitt house" can be seen today as it is a museum last occupied by Nora Cupitt nee , a teacher who taught grade three at Windsor Primary and had Jack Holman and his son Robert as pupils.
Alfred continued to work as a carpenter in the Windsor district but contracted typhoid from contaminated foundations of a house he was demolishing in the town and died shortly after in 1855 aged 36. Sophia was left with three children 4 years and under to raise.
It is noted that a school boy who sold her a load of fire wood for 2/6 stole a grindstone valued at 2/-. George PLATT pleaded guilty in the local court and was imprisoned for 7 days.

On 22 Januarry 1839 John Gilbert and family sailed from Plymouth onboard "Roxburgh Castle" with the children as "Bounty Immigrants" and the adults paying full passage being too old. After rounding the Cape of Good Hope John died as did Sarah Anne aged 1 year and 8 months. Son Thomas Gilbert was also onboard "Roxburgh Castle" with his family and lost his son Owen at sea. They were paid ?18 bounty for each child that died in transit. The ship arrived at Sydney Cove 26th May 1839. All the Gilberts could read and write except the youngest and all were Wesleyan Methodists.

William came to Australia aboard "Roxburgh Castle" with his father and family aged 23 years.
William was an agriculturist, labourer, undertaker and carpenter and Lived at Port Stevens Street, Raymond Terrace NSW Australia. He was active in the church and held regular gatherings of Methodists in his home until funds enabled him to build a wooden church at Millers Forrest near Raymond Terrace in 1875-6.
After his wife died William moved for a time to Wallsend NSW until his mother died and he then returned to Raymond Terrace where he died and was buried with his wife and son Owen.

5. THOMAS4 GILBERT (JOHN3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 03 Apr 1818 in Beckley Sussex England, and died 30 Nov 1889. He married MARY ANNE BULL 31 Jan 1837 in Ashford kent England, daughter of JOHN BULL and SARAH WELLER. She was born 10 Oct 1819 in Beckley Sussex England, and died 20 Oct 1900.

Notes for THOMAS GILBERT:
They travelled to Rotorua New Zealand and lived near the pink and white terraces which were destroyed in a volcanic eruption of Mt. Tarawera on 10-6-1886. They then went to Tasmania and settled at Oatlands named by Governor Macquarrie in 1821.
They named thier next child born 13-9-1844 after Port Arthur, grandfather John, his father Thomas, their best friend Langtry and the town Oatlands. So was christened Arthur John Thomas Langtry Oatlands GILBERT.
A daughter was born two years later named Clara Harriet GILBERT 12-3-1847. The local census 1-1-1848 showed the family living at Queen Anne Street Oatlands in a brick dwelling and that they were Wesleyan Methodists. Thomas worked as a Goal Warder but his trade was watch and clock maker. onvicts were constructing a road from George Town to Hobart and a Goal for the chain gang was constructed at Oatlands and then extended to take on female convicts.
By may 1849 the family had moved to Raymond Terrace NSW where Thomas worked as a postman. They then moved to Stroud and then to Rosenthal on the Myall River where Thomas acquired land and built a sawmill and had a boat "S.S. MYALL" christened by his daughter Grace to transport timber along the coast of NSW.
Late in life he moved to Newcastle and opened a "Clock Makers" shop. He had a house at Beaumont Street Hamilton where both Thomas and Mary died and were then burried at Sandgate. They had 9 children altogether.

Patrick emmigrated to Australia with his wife and 4 children on the Ocean Empress leaving from Liverpool and arriving Sydney 1864. He and hisfamily are found on early electoral rolls (1903) for Crookwell where he was possibly a farm laboourer for the Parker family.

The history of the Baudreau and Graveline families began in 1653 with the arrival from France of a young pioneer named Urbain Baudreau dit Graveline. Sailing from the small port of LaRochelle in France aboard a small vessel, a determined group of soldiers and adventurers began its perilous journey. Urbain had signed a contract for five years to serve the colony of Montreal as a militiaman to protect it from the attacks of the dreaded Iroquois Indians.

The Gravolin name is based on the ?dit? name used by the French when they migrated to Canada and elsewhere and is based on the town or region of France from where they came. Gravelines is a region of northern France and there is a fishing village with the same name on the north west coast.
Our GRAVOLIN line in Australia then came from France, then to Canada and then to New Zealand.
Joseph William RAFFLING dit GRAVELINE migrated from Canada to New Zealand where he married Caroline GOODING . They then migrated to Cootamundra NSW Australia and dropped the Raffling name and registered as GRAVOLIN.

During the depression they lived in a dirt floor garage on their parent?s property and eventually Denis gained job at Goodyear tyre factory as a floor sweeper. He supplemented his income as an SP bookmaker. He later won first prise in the jackpot lottery which gave him secure for the rest of his life.

In 1787 at the age of 23 years Thomas Upton was living in a lodging at 49 Windmill Street London with his wife who was big with child and though poor was industrious. In July 1787 he was arrested with three others and charged with receiving stolen goods. In September they appeared at the Old Bailey Court. At the trial, 14 year old John COOPER had stolen 49 calico shirts from his employer Mr. John Williamson valued at ?12.5.0 and 3 pair thread stockings 8/-. Cooper was found guilty and sentenced to be whipped privately and returned to his employer.( Following character reference from his employer). Thomas received some shirts and his wife cut them up to make table linen and a frock for the new baby. Thomas was found guilty of receiving stolen goods and on 12-8-1787 was sentenced to transportation to NSW for 14 years. The other 3 got off on a technicality. Thomas was interred in one of the Thames hulks for 2 years and 4 months before leaving Portsmouth in the " Neptune"-309 tons and in the "second fleet"on 19th Jan 1790. He survived the "Death Fleet" and arrived Sydney Cove 28-6-1790. Thomas was a carpenter and was made to assist settlers with building projects especially around Windsor. By 1800 he was given approval from Governor Hunter to become self employed as a carpenter and in 1801 his sentence had expired. by 1800 was self employed by the Governors Leave, a carpenter at the Hawkesbury. The 25 acres he was farming in 1806 could conceivably have been a personal gift from Commandant McKellar. Around this time he met Sarah HOSKISSON nee PIGG. After her husband was murdered by aborigines and she was pardoned they cohabited and eventually they were married and took up farming. He was granted, eventually, a very useful 70 acres on South Creek.
They are buried at St. Matthews Windsor NSW Australia.

Thomas Hodgkis was sentenced for 7 years at Maidstone in Kent 27th. July 1789 and came out on the "William and Ann" in the third fleet, arriving 28th August 1791.
Killed by aboriginees at Yellow rock Yarramundi NSW Australia in August 1799.

1799 He was a farmer near the Green Hills, employer of convict labour, and wife Sarah was awaiting the birth of their third child, Mary.
Aboriginal visitors to his farm were reputed kindly treated but no doubt the Hoskisson cornfields were ruled out of bounds. Not recognizing that to go shooting was a comparable violation of rights, Hoskisson and his companion Wimbow, on reaching the second ridge of the mountains, were savagely done to death in 1799. A reprisal killing led to five white men (one an employee) being charged over the death of two aborigines.
It was stated at their trial that HOSKISSON and another were out hunting when they were joined by a group of aborigines who stayed with them over night and left them in the morning. The following night it was alleged that the aborigines returned and murdered them. Some three weeks later the aborigines came to the Hoskisson farm to return Thomas' gun. Sarah panicked and ran next door to Simon Frebody's house. Simon gathered four others including an off duty constable and detained three boys from the same tribe. The boys tried to escape during the night and one did, the other two were shot. The men were found guilty of murder but were not punished.
The widowed Sarah received sympathetic consideration in the form of a 60 acre land grant at Petersham Hill.
