2. SARAH PIGG (JOHN) was born 1772 in Bishops Storfood Hertfordshire UK, and died 13 Nov 1827 in Windsor NSW Australia. She married (1) THOMAS (HODGKIS) HOSKISSON 30 Jan 1795 in St. Phillips Sydney NSW Australia. He was born 1775 in England UK, and died Aug 1799 in Lower Blue Mountains NSW Australia. She consorted {marriage not recorded} (2) JOHN EMBREY in 1800 Parramatta NSW. She married (3) THOMAS UPTON 04 Jul 1803 in The Hawkesbury Inn Windsor NSW Australia. He was born 1764, and died 10 May 1827 in Windsor NSW Australia.

Sarah was baptised 1772 in England.
At age 18 Sarah was arrested for stealing from Mary Smith's shop 14 yards of lace ?3-13-6, 18 yards of lace edging ?1-0-0, 3? yards of muslin 7/-, 4 pairs stockings 7/-, 4 linen handkerchiefs 4/-, 1 printed shawl 8/-, 9 yards Irish linen cloth 16/6 and 1 muslin apron 6/-. She appeared at Hartfordshire Assizes on 3 March 1790, found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. Since they needed women in the penal colony NSW she along with others had her sentence commuted to "transportation beyond the seas" for the term of her natural life.
12 months later she left Plymouth aboard "Mary Anne" 300 tons in the "third fleet" on 16-2-1791 (11 ships and 200 convicts). They arrived Sydney Cove 9th. July 1791. After 3 ? years she married Thomas Hoskisson at St. Phillips Church Sydney by Rev. Richard Johnson the first Chaplin of the colony. Thomas could read and write and we think he changed his name from Hodgkis who was sentenced at Maidstone Kent and transported for 7 years. He was aboard "William Ann" part of the third fleet. They lived together for some time before being married. They farmed along the Hawkesbury river at Green Hills (Windsor) and had 3 children. Sarah was pardoned 27-7-1798 by Governor Hunter after recommendations from Rev. Richard Johnston. In August 1799 Thomas and a friend were murdered by aboriginals whilst hunting in the lower Blue Mountains. These aboriginals were seen later carrying the blankets and firearms stolen. Two were caught and killed by other settlers who were charged with murder but local judges could not decide their fate and later they were freed from bail by English decision.
Sarah received compensation from Governor Hunter in the form of a land grant of 60 acres at Petersham Hill. In 1880 she was pregnant to John EMBREY another convict born in Virginia USA and arrested for stealing in the UK. He was sentenced to 7 years. They had one child. Four years later she was married to Thomas Upton at Windsor by Samuel Marsden the second Chaplin. They took up farming at McHillar on a gift deed of 25 acres on the Hawkesbury River.

After his father's and brothers deaths at sea in 1823 Samuel and his mother were relegated to the poor house. They depended on Lord Fortescue of Castle Hill for money and coal. Evevidently they were in residence on the estate at Castle Hill and Samuel at the age of 6 was taken as a page boy to live at the manor. He subsequently became a footman and eventually a butler.
At this time he offered himself for the ministry and the Earl offered him a post with the Dowager Lady Fortescue at Weare Gifford near Bidford where he was able to study for the ministry as well as being employed by the Dowager. He also, as time permitted, preached at the local village on Sunday evenings.
At his own expense he spent half a year at Shebbear College and was instructed in theology by James Thorn. In 1848 he was received on trial to the ministry and was placed at South Devon Mission for two years. With further study, including a homeopathic course, he was accepted into full Connexion in 1852 and sent as a missionary to South Australia with an annual salary of 14 pounds. Before sailing he married Sally Ingerson and they departed on the "Lord Delaval" arriving in Melbourne Victoria in February 1853. He served for 19 years in South Australia, building churches and forming congregations.

A sailor who last sailed from Plymouth in 1823 with his sons ( except 5 year old Samuel) to Africa to obtain timber. He was never heard from again and is assumed to have been ship wrecked. His pennyless wife and son were relegated to the poor house as was the custom and depended on Lord Fortescue for money and coal.

I have data on the children and their descendants of John Coombe (Farmer-Sensus records 1841 Lewannick page 20) and Jenny Sargent. Some migrated to South Australia, Victoria and Queensland and set up one of the Coombe dynasties here in Australia.

I need help with the Cornwall end to push back the brick wall.
Researchers wishing Australian data then please ask. There is also another Coombe family ( at least) with a parrallel universe through South Australia. I have been given the data. Ask.

They had 8 children 2 in UK and 6 in Australia.
Anthony a farmer and Eleanor left Torquay, England sailing from Plymouth aboard "Fatima" a vessel of 521 tons and carrying 234 passangers on 8th February 1850. With sons William aged 4 and Anthony aged 2 they survived the trip arriving Adelaide 10th June 1850. They established themselves in Bowden and in 1851 Anthony along with Samuel Coombe and Mr. Rimes traveled by bullock dray to Bendigo gold diggings leaving their wives and families behind. The men found gold.
Anthony purchased 80 acres at Virginia and the family attended church firstly at Elim and then after that church closed, the bible christian church at Virginia.
In 1854 Anthony had "Calvengrove" built, one of the first stone homes in the district.
Anthony and Eleanor are burried in the Zoar Cemetery.South Australia.
I have some data on the children, grand children and G grand children and so on in Australia but would like some help with the roots in the UK.

Alfred James Holman was a carpenter as was his father. He was born in Camden Town in the County of Middlesea and baptised at St. Pancras Church London and migrated to Australia in 1871. He married Sophia Cupit in Orange NSW in the Trinity Church Of England on 30th. November 1876. He was aged 28. Their first child was stillborn and after the birth of their second child they moved from Orange to Windsor and moved into one of the houses on the Cupit land in George Street. Alfred built addittional houses and replaced those built by his fatherinlaw.
"Cupitt house" can be seen today as it is a coffee shop last occupied by Nora Cupit nee McMahon, a teacher who taught grade three at Windsor Primary and had Jack Holman and his son Robert as pupils.
Alfred continued to work as a carpenter in the Windsor district but contracted typhoid from contaminated foundations of a house he was demolishing in the town and died shortly after in 1855 aged 36. Sophia was left with three children 4 years and under to raise.
It is noted that a school boy who sold her a load of fire wood for 2/6 stole a grindstone valued at 2/-. George PLATT pleaded guilty in the local court and was imprisoned for 7 days.
Hence our Holman line in Australia.

The family set up at Blackwood Victoria. John Cann was a baker and initially had a bakery and then purchased an hotel. His son John was a blacksmaith and coachman and established a thriving coach business.
