* Belle had managed the large Private Hotel BRAEBURN in Wanganui, moving to Auckland to manage the HOTEL CARGEN and then in 1924 the Private HOTEL BRAEBURN at 16 Symonds Street, Auckland. Belle had 'learned the trade' from her mother (Rebecca nee RUMBELL) who, as a young widow at age 33, with 7 children, had run a number of hotels in the South Island

* Isabella 'Belle' BOND (1869-1947), was born 3 June 1869, a twin with Mary Ann Bond, 3rd & 4th daughters of George Butler BOND (1835-1876) & Rebecca RUMBELL (1844-1904). Belle married George Divorty BRAIK (1857-1915) on 24 April 1891 at her mother's hotel in Queenstown as his 2nd wife.
- George had first married Harriet Elizabeth DAVYS (1863-1888) in Knox Church Dunedin on 11 Jan 1887, daughter of John Winterscale DAVYS (1826-1909) & Emma WRIGHT (1834-1900). George & Harriet had a daughter, Flora Harriet Braik born 18 April 1888. Harriet died 6 days after giving birth and Flora died 24 March 1891 aged 3 in Lawrence, 'at the home of Mr Frank NICOLL', (just a month before her father remarried). Harriet & Flora are buried together, with other members of the Davys family, in Plot 10, Block 191 at Northern Cemetery, Dunedin
NOTE Francis 'Frank' Nicoll (1840-1925) was the manager of the Hercules No 2 South Gold Mining Company in Lawrence and by 1898 was with the Golden Mascotte Sluicing Company Ltd at Canadian Flat, Upper Taieri. No connection has yet been found to the Braik family. Possibly a friend that they were visiting? ... ALTHOUGH, Frank Nicoll married Henrietta CORMACK & had 10-12 children, At least one of whom, Francis James Nicoll (1865-1899) also graduated from the Edinburgh University of Otago (M.B., C.M.)

* George Braik was born in Gartly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, a son of Adam BRAIK & Margaret GORDON. He arrived in New Zealand about 1883-85 and commenced teaching in Otago. He graduated from the Edinburgh Univeristy of Otago with an M.A. in 1896. He was eventually appointed Inspector of Schools and was made Chief Inspector of the Wanganui Education District without appointments being called for. He died in Wanganui 2 January 1915 aged 58, a week after the surgery he underwent on Christmas Day. A Tribute to Mr Braik

* the 1st son of George & Belle, George Braik (1892-1892), died 7 Sep 1892 at Richmond Grove, Invercargill, Southland aged 6 days, He is buried Plot 46, Block 15 at Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.

* the 2nd son of George & Belle, Sergeant Lancelot Garrow Braik (1894-1918), served in WWI as Sergeant 25096 with the New Zealand Rifles, 5th Reinforcements to 3rd Battalion, Machine-Gun Section. He died in Wanganui 18 Nov 1918 whilst on active service, from complications of the Flu Pandemic. He is buried at Wanganui Old Cemetery, Heads Road

* the 3rd son of George & Belle, Douglas Gordon Braik (1897-1955), moved to the United States after serving in WWI, and obtained his degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1923. He was a member of the T-Square Club, the Philadelphia Chapter of the AIA, and the British Officers Club of Philadelphia. During World War II he served as security officer for the British Maritime Commission in Philadelphia, Boston, and San Pedro, Los Angeles, California. At the time of his death he was employed as chief of the design staff for the Philadelphia Housing Authority. Douglas married Margery Winsome STUART in Philadelphia on 18 July 1924 and had a son, George David Braik (1927-1971). Marjery had been born in Wellington, New Zealand 7 March 1899 to Charles Robert Kirkland STUART (1868-1926), an Accountant, & Mary Ellett PAGE (1869-1942), whose father, Joseph Ellett Page from Cavendish, Suffolk, had once been the Town Clerk of Wellington. She had 1 brother, David Forbes Page (1900-1980) who married Jessie AIKEN (1901-1978) in 1929. Most of this side of the family are buried at Karori
A Biography for Douglas

* the 4th child, and only daughter, Elaine Isabel Braik (1901-1943) attended St Mary's College in Wellington, doing very well in Music. She received an annual allowance from the Education Department of ?13 ($30 a week in 2012) which was granted to the children of deceased contributors (her father). She was still unmarried in Nov 1938 when she and her mother Belle visited Auckland (meaning they no longer lived in Auckland), staying at the Hotel St George. Like her mother, Elaine enjoyed playing bridge and they accompanied each other to many social occasions. Elaine died 12 Oct 1943 in Auckland. She had never married

In March 1937 Mrs Belle Braik offered the City Council (for the sum of ?15,000 ($1,450,000 in 2012) a property at the corner of Symonds Street and Grafton Road as a site for an art gallery. The City Council already had an unexpired, 35 year lease on the property (their reply is not known) but today it is the Faculty of Arts Department of Film, Television and Media Studies a teaching department of the Univeristy of Auckland. Of note... this was part of a very large block which the Braeburn Hotel was on. Had she bought the Hotel at some stage?? or just the land next to it??

• Thomas CAISLEY
died 2 March 1900 aged 27
buried Lot 296, Block PRO, Section PRO
Ohinemuri Gazette Wednesday 7 March 1900 - A distressing accident occurred at the New Zealand Talisman Gold Mining Company's mine, Karangahake, at about half-past ten o'clock on Friday night (2nd) which resulted in the death of a young man named Thomas Caisley. It appears that deceased was working in the stopes at the back of No 3 level, his mate being a man named Hubert, who was engaged working at a point about 20ft away from Caisley. Hubert heard a fall of mullock, and called to Caisley to know what was the matter. Upon receiving no reply he proceeded to the spot where Caisley had been working, and found him partly covered with the debris, his head and legs being the only part of his body visible. Hubert was alone at the time, so he worked hard to retrieve his mate, the time occupied in doing so being about twenty minutes. Caisley, upon being extricated, showed no signs of life, so his mate proceeded to no 2 level and procured assistance. The victim of the accident was then conveyed on a stretcher to the Tramway Hotel, where Dr Buckby was soon in attendance, but could only pronounce life extinct. A coroner's inquest was held on Saturday, before Mr Forrest, coroner, and a jury of six, of whom Mr Clarke was chosen foreman. The evidence adduced showed clearly that the accident could not have been foreseen, and that the fall of mullock occurred in what was considered a very safe portion of the mine. The stoping in question was being done by contract, and deceased was one of the employees of the contractors. Dr Buckby's evidence indicated that deceased had been suffocated, his head having been jammed against the wall. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased was accidentally killed, and that no blame was attributable to anyone

buried Lot 139, Block PRO, Section PRO
25 January 1900 - DICKEY - On January 25, 1900, at his father's residence, Mount Pleasant, Paeroa, James Henry, third and dearly beloved son of Nathaniel and Isabel Dickey; aged 16 years and 3 months. Funeral will leave his father's residence on Sunday, at 2.30 p.m.
... This morning a serious accident happened to Jim Dickey, son of Mr N. Dickey, the well-known horse owner at Paeroa. Young Dickey was exercising Swiftfoot on the Paeroa racecourse, when the animal commenced rearing and plunging and at last fell back with the boy, who had his head split open
... A very sad accident happened at the Paeroa Racecourse on Wednesday morning, about half-past four, when two horses, the property of Mr N. Dickey, were having a trial. The horses were Lady Dash (ridden by W. Dickey) and Swiftfoot (ridden by Jim Dickey). When coming round the bottom corner Jim Dickey came off Swiftfoot, his skull being severly injured, thus causing unconsciousness. No one knows exactly how the accident happened, as Lady Dash was in front, but it is surmised that the horse stumbled and the boy was precipitated to the ground. Dr Smith was sent for, but from the first could hold out no hope. Dr Forbes also came from Waihi and Dr Cooper from Te Aroha, but they could do nothing for the little fellow, who passed away on Thursday morning at seven o'clock. The greatest sympathy is felt for the relatives of the deceased in their sad affliction and the funeral to-morrow afternoon at two o'clock will doubtless be largely attended. The boy at the time of his death was only sixteen years of age. An inquest was held on Thursday afternoon before Mr W. Forrest, Coroner, and a jury of six (of which Mr J. Martin was foreman), when a verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned

buried Lot 462, Block ROC, Section ROC (with Nora above)
24 May 1899 It is with feelings of the most sincere regret that we have to record the death of Mr Patrick Edward Ryan, of Karangahake, who passed away at eleven o'clock on Monday morning (22nd). It appears that Mr Ryan had been suffering from insomnia and that on Sunday evening he took a dose of laudanum. Later on the evening he took a second, and apparently larger dose, to make himself sleep. On Monday morning he was found in his bed still in a heavy sleep, and although the service of Drs Buckby and Forbes were secured, all efforts were unavailing, and Mr Ryan died at about eleven o'clock.
The greatest sympathy is felt with the bereaved relations, as the deceased was known and respected by all classes of the community. He was a single man, and but 25 years of age. Deceased had been a prominent runner and footballer in this disctict for some years back, and has played three-quarter in the Karangahake football team for some considerable time past. Last year he played in the Ohinemuri representative team. The deceased was the third son of Mr P. Ryan, of Waitekauri, and was employed with his brother in keeping the Tramway Hotel at Karangahake. He has a sister and brother at Waitekauri, the latter being the licensee of the Waitekaru Hotel (this was William 'Bill' Earle Ryan who died in 1902 aged 37 & his wife Kate ran the Hotel until her remarriage in 1904 to Peter Crosby and he then became the licensee)
... The inquest was held at Karangahake yesteday afternoon, before Mr W. Forrest, Coroner and a jury of six, of whom Mr M. D. Regan was chosen foreman. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict as follows:- "That the deceased Patrick Edward Ryan died at Tramway Hotel, Karangahake, on Monday, 22nd May 1899, at or about 10.45 a.m., from the effects of an overdose of laudanum administered as an opiate, without due knowledge as to safe amount, and that no blame is attachable to Mr Morton, chemist's assistant
... The match between Paeroa and Karangahake, which was to take place on Saturday next, has been postponed owing to the death of 'Paddy' Ryan, and the senior fixture for that day will be Paeroa v Waitekauri, at Waitekauri

Her decease will be deeply regretted by the numerous friends she has left behind, and the deepest sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband and family
9 Nov 1898 The funeral of the late Mrs Thos. The procession, which was one of the largest that we have seen in Paeroa, extending over a mile long, left the late residence of deceased shortly after 3 p.m. and proceeded as far as the Roman Catholic Chapel, where the coffin was taken in and the service read by the Rev Father Hackett in a very impressive manner. 28 Nov 1900 A BRAVE GIRLS DEATH
... A sad drowning accident occurred here this evening, as a result of which a girl named Lottie Thorp, aged 14 years (sic), eldest daughter of Mr A. J. Thorp, lost her life. It appears that the girl was bathing with several other children and that they got in a boat to pull across to a sand bank. One of the smaller children, thinking they had reached it, stepped out into deep water. The little girl courageously jumped in to save it, and succeeded in doing so, but at the same time the boat capsized and she was drawn under, sinking before assistance could arrive. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents, especially as it is only last week that a younger daughter

57th Regiment of Foot leave New Zealand 1867

prompted by the posting: COLGAN marriages
Rosa/Rose Anna Colgan - married Michael PHELAN in 1865. Michael was in the 57th West Middlesex Regiment of Foot (the Diehards), which landed in New Zealand from India on 25 Jan 1861. Possible Michael was stationed in Taranaki or Wanganui at time of their marriage. After campaigning in Taranaki, the 57th was transferred to Waikato in 1866. Regimental headquarters was at Te Awamutu, with companies stationed at Ngaruawahia and Te Rore. The 57th Regiment returned to England in early 1867 and a son of Rose & Michael, John Pierce Phelan, was baptised on board the 'Maori' in May 1867.
Not known if he was born in NZ or on board
NOTES
* there was another Michael Phelan who served with the 57th Foot (West Middlesex) Regiment. Sergeant 1965, Michael Phelan died of 'Severe Wounds' on 8 Sep 1855 during the final attack on the Redan
- source Casualty Rolls of the Crimean War of 1854-56
* there was a Sergeant Phelan who was alongside Dudley STAGPOOLE at Taranaki (Dudley has the distinction of winning both the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Victoria Cross within the space of one week during the Taranaki land war in 1863) ... "In his interviews Dudley describes being in an advance group of soldiers approaching closely and crossing a fence or hedge towards a Maori taua (a war party of hundreds of warriors) who were besieging St Patrick?s redoubt. Dudley states that as the group pulled back his ?right hand man was hit and as I looked behind I saw him lying on the ground with the enemy advancing at full speed?. Dudley describes handing his rifle to Sergeant Phelan, then lifting the soldier bodily and putting him back over the fence with the other soldiers' ... more at link

* the military was a large presence in the early colonial days in New Zealand and the troops would have had a major impact on the lives of the early settlers and their peace of mind during the turbulent Land Wars between 1845-1872. I thought it may be of interest to find some of the names and history of the men who served

The 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot was a regiment of line infantry in the British Army, raised in 1755. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot to form the Middlesex Regiment in 1881.
The regiment traveled to New South Wales in detachments as escorts to prisoners in 1824. It moved on to India in 1830 and, while there, helped to suppress a rebellion in Mangalore in 1837. The regiment did not embark for home until April 1846. In Sep 1854 the regiment embarked for service in the Crimean War: it fought at the Battle of Inkerman in Nov 1854 and the Siege of Sevastapol in winter 1854. It moved to Malta in June 1856 and then sailed for India to help suppress the Indian Rebellion in May 1858. It then sailed for Auckland, New Zealand in Nov 1860 for service in the New Zealand Wars. Ensign John Thornton Down (1842-1866) and Drummer Dudley Stagpoole (1838-1911) were both awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions during a skirmish at Allen's Hill near Omata in Oct 1863 during the Second Taranaki War. The regiment returned to England in 1867 and then moved to Ceylon in 1873. From Ceylon it sailed to South Africa in 1879 for service in the Anglo-Zulu War.

the 57th Ordered to New Zealand - Oct 1860
TROOPS for New Zealand - Her Majesty's 57th Regiment now stationed at Poonah have been ordered to hold themselves in readiness to proceed immediatley from Bombay to New Zealand on field service. The families and Depot of the Regiment will remain here for the present. Her Majesty's 64th Regiment from Kurrachee are also about to proceed to New Zealand. It is probable that the 83rd and other regiments that have served their time in India will also form the force

The 57th arrived in New Zealand in 1861 on three ships:
the * STAR QUEEN left Bombay on 23 Nov 1860
Captain Barber, 10 officers, 1 surgeon, 16 sergeants & 314 rank and file soldiers led by Major Butler

the ARRIVAL of the FIRST - 15 Jan 1861
ARRIVAL OF TROOPS by the "Star Queen" which came into harbour yesterday, the first detachment of the 57th Foot - about 350 strong - arrived. The "Star Queen" is lying off Judge's Bay; and we understand that she will proceed to day, with the troops on board, to Taranaki. She has been fifty-two days out from Bombay. The second wing of the Regiment was to leave Bombay immediately and there arrival may therefore be hourly looked for

ARRIVAL of the SECOND - 22 Jan 1861
Towards evening the signal was made of a ship in sight, and shortly afterwards the rendezvous flag and Bombay. It proved to be the 'Castilian', 1115 tons, Captain HARRINGTON, from Bombay, with the second detachment (headquarters) of the 57th on board, 411 strong, under the command of Major Logan, out since the 29th of November. She came round by the South and sighted the Snares on the 15th instant. Captain Harrington reports a large vessel outside last night.
The following is the list of officers and passengers:-
* Major LOGAN & Mrs Logan and 2 children
* Major St CLAU

the ARRIVAL of the THIRD - 13 May 1861
H.M. steam transport ship 'Prince Arthur', 1200 tons, Captain Walker, from Bombay, fetched her anchorage here yesterday evening about 7 o'clock. She has on board a detachment of the 57th Regiment, under the command of Brevet-Major Hassard.

* Captain Sir Robert DOUGLAS, Bart.,
* Captain C. J. CLARKE

. 147 non-commissioned officers and men
. 42 soldiers' wives

The detachment of the 57th Regiment embarked on board the hired transport-ship 'Victory' at Bombay, on the 5th March; but in consequence of small-pox appearing in the crew, the troops were transferred, on the 18th March, to the Prince Arthur, which sailed the same day. The troops enjoyed excellent health throughout. The Prince Arthur is a noble vessel and does credit to the Indian navy. The troops are to be sent to Taranaki to join the headquarters of the regiment. We hope every facility will be given by the officials here for the transport of the women and children

Edward GLYNN was brought up charged with being a deserter from H.M. 57th Regiment. He pleaded guilty, stating in extenuation that he had committed the offence in a state of intoxication. His Worship said if that statement were true, why did the prisoner not return when he became sober, in which case he would have been punished merely for absence without leave; whereas, as the matter stood, he would be subjected to the degradation of trial by Court Martial, besides forfeiting his claim to all benefit accruing from a term of service amounting to 13 years. PREPARING TO LEAVE - 9 Feb 1867
Tenders are out for the conveyance home of troops, and we hear that orders have been received to at once concentrate the 57th Regiment in Auckland, for the purpose also of proceeding home. There will be no doubt of the Electric and Maori being taken up by the Government, and most likely the England and Mary Shepherd, now expected. Orders have been given to prepare for the embarkation of the 12th Regiment immediately after the departure of the 57th. The 57th Regiment is to be concentrated at Auckland by the 15th March 1867. General CHUTE has issued orders to the effect that the whole of the posts beyond the Queen's Redoubt (at Pokeno), in the Waikato, are to be abandoned by the Imperial troops

ORDER FROM THE HORSE GUARDS - 11 Feb 1867
It has, for some time past, been currently reported and generally understood, that the whole of the Imperial troops, with the exception of one line regiment, were sooner or later to be removed from the colony, but somehow or other we have still some of the Engineer corps, a few Artillery and a great portion of the 2nd battalions of the 12th, 18th and 57th Regiments scattered over the island. We understand, however, that the major General in command of the troops has received imperative instructions from the Horse Guards to order the immediate removal of all but one regiment; and these orders are to be carried out forthwith, regardless of any remonstrances from his Excellency or his responsible advisers. It is also said that all the garrisons are to be kept up as far as practicable in their former state

TE AWAMUTU - 13 Feb 1867
On Friday last orders arrived at Te Awamutu, the head-quarters of the 57th Regiment, for their immediate departure to Auckland, previous to embarkation for England. The withdrawal from the Waikato of this last vestige of protection will, no doubt, materially influence the decision of any wavering Maori; and political trimmers are no novelty among them

LARCENY - 14 Feb 1867
OTAHUHU RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT - The first case heard was on an information laid by Sarah BUTTRESS, of Williamson's Clearing, Bombay Settlement, against Abrahan POOLE, alias John SMITH, a deserter form the 57th Regiment while stationed at Whatawhata, for stealing a silver watch, value ?3 (2012 equivalent of $325), from her tent. The prisoner admitted the theft and hoped the Court would not send him to gaol. The Bench sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with hard labour, and afterwards to be handed over to the military authorities

MILITARY CLAIMANTS TO LAND - 19 Feb 1867
Now that the 12th and 57th regiments are about to leave, we remind the officers and men who may be desirous, that the clauses 80, 81, and 82 of the Auckland Waste Lands Act, 1858, under which such privileges are granted to navel and military men of Her Majesty's forces will only be in operation until the end of the present month

the 'MAORI' - 20 Feb 1867
The favourite London and New Zealand trader Maori, Captain ROBERTS, has almost completed her discharge, having only a few packages remaining undischarged. As we surmised in a precious issue, the A1 ship has again been chartered by H.M.'s Government for the conveyance of troops to England, and will accordingly sail with the headquarters of the 57th Regiment about the beginning of next month. Her 'tween decks are all clear, clean, and ready for the first survey, which we understand will be held to-day. The Maori being so well known here for her carrying capacity and ample accommodation, &c.

QUEEN'S REDOUBT - 21 Feb 1867
The steamer Blue Nose arrived at Point Russell last evening, about 6 o'clock, from Te Rore, with 22 women, 25 children and the heavy luggage of the 57th Regiment. 20 Military Train Drays were at the Point ready to bring the women, children and baggage to the Queen's Redoubt, which they did during the early part of the night, and will leave for Papakura at 9 a.m. this morning and from that to Auckland tomorrow
NGARUAWAHIA - In the course of another week the 57th Regiment leaves enroute for Home, the Waikato will thus be denuded of all the imperial forces. Is it advisable in the unsettled state of the colony to leave this valuable part of New Zealand to the very slender militia force now settled here?. Should there be an outbreak, could they hold it?. And if they could, would it not involve great loss of life and property?

We see by the Auckland journals that the ship Maori has been engaged to take home the 57th Regiment, and is being rapidly prepared for their reception. Orders have been received by the Admiralty Transport officer in Auckland to take up a vessel for the passage home of the Military Train early in May. It is also we believe, understood that arrangements will shortly be made for sending home the 2nd battalion, 18th Regiment, in which case we shall see the departure of the last Imperial troops in the colony.
- The head-quarters of the 57th Regiment marched from Te Awamutu on Friday afternoon and embarked at Te Rore on Saturday morning. A detachment of the 2nd Waikato Regiment, under Ensign WIGGENS, has been posted at Kihikihi, so that we are not left entirely defenseless

RAGLAN - 20 March 1867
The departure of the troops, so long looked forward to as an event which must sooner or later take place, occurred on the 19th instant, the detachment of the 57th Regiment stationed here embarking that evening with the whole of their equipage in the s.s. 'Prince Alfred' for Onehunga; and Raglan, after being garrisoned since December 1863, by either regulars or militia is now left to be defended by its inhabitants

THE TROOP SHIPS - 23 March 1867
The whole of the 57th Regiment being now stationed in Auckland, ready for embarkation, their stay amongst us will be short, more especially as the vessels chartered to carry them to England are almost ready for sea. The first ship to sail will be the MAORI, the next ship to get away will be THE ELECTRIC, Captain LEWTHWAITE, with the head quarters of the 57th Regiment in command of Colonel Logan. The vessel has now been fitted up in the 'tween decks to accommodate 360 rank and file, 30 women, 41 children, 5 staff sergeants and the hospital and prison to hold as many percentage of those on board as in the case of the Maori. The fitting up of both ships has been entrusted to Mr Anderson, contractor and builder, and he has carried out his work in such a manner that does him infinite credit and is much praised and admired by the survey board of officers

New Zealand Wars, sometimes called the Land Wars and also once called the Maori Wars, were a series of armed conflicts that took place in New Zealand between 1845 and 1872. The wars were fought over a number of issues, the most prominent concerning Maori land being sold to the settler population.

Pre 1860 conflicts. The Musket Wars of the 1810s-1830s caused thousands of Maori to flee their traditional lands, freeing large areas for Pakeha (European) settlement. In 1840 Europeans bought one desirable but depopulated area, Auckland, for a tiny amount. This purchase sowed the seeds for interracial conflict. Ngapuhi, led by Hone Heke, felt betrayed when trade slumped after the new colonial government quit the Bay of Islands for Auckland. In 1845 Heke and Kawiti (an expert at designing modern pa able to resist artillery bombardment) launched a campaign that threatened British control in the north

War in Taranaki 1860-1863. In 1859 the minor Te Atiawa chief Te Teira Manuka offered to sell land at Waitara in north Taranaki to the Crown. The government accepted the offer and Pakeha settlers looked forward to expanding their small enclave around New Plymouth. However Wiremu Kingi, a more senior chief, denied that Teira had the right to sell the Waitara land, and war broke out there in March 1860. Taranaki experienced a series of conflicts over the next 21 years

A TRIBUTE to the late ARCHIBALD MARTIN 4 Oct 1910
In the death of the late Mr Archibald Martin, Masterton has lost a settler of thirty years' residence, and the Dominion a colonist of fifty years' standing. A typical Highlander, keen and alert, lithe and sinewy, he had the iron frame and tough constitution of one that could, and did, endure much toil and hardship in the early days. Even with the weight of four-score years, his shoulders never bent to the burden of his days. It was his boast that during his long life he had never had a day's illness, and even at the end it could hardly be said that he succumbed to any disease, beyond the weakness of ripe old age.
On the morning of his death he asked for his "glasses" and glanced through the Daily Times, held converse with members of his family, and after dinner, feeling drowsy, fell asleep, and passed peacefully into the great unknown - a man to be admired in life and envied in death.
As a man, Mr Martin was shrewd, abstemious and industrious, straight-forward in his actions and of unimpeachable integrity. His manner was unassuming and unpretentious, and he was both kind-hearted and genial, making friends of all who knew him and enemies of none. A man of more that average intelligence, he was the best exponent of Scottish history that the writer has every known; incidents and dates alike were at his finger ends, and his memory was indeed marvellous in one of his advanced age.
Not further back than twelve months ago - if as long ago as that - he and the writer were discussing incidents relative to the rising of '45 in favour of Bonnie Prince Charlie, when the old man said, "Here boy, I'll give you a verse," and there and then he recited a long and stirring ballad - without hitch or hesitation - on the gathering of the Highland clans. Although not, so far as the writer knows, a composer of rhymes himself, he had a true poetic temperament, and owned that the inclination ran in his family, he having a brother who had essayed in that direction, while his youngest son - at present surveyor-in-chief in the Straits Settlements - was a writer of verse of no mean order

NOTE MASTERTON 26 Nov 1906
... A middle-aged man named William Martin, a watchmaker, a native of Glasgow, was found dead in a passage leading to his premises yesterday morning. Deceased had been drinking heavily on Saturday evening, and was escorted to his home by a friend, being left at his door. He evidently settled down in an attitude from which he was unable in his helpless state to stir, and was strangled by his collar preventing him breathing.
... What appears to be an untimely death overtook Mr William Martin, watchmaker, of Masterton, on Saturday evening. It seems that at about 10.10 p.m. Mr T, Pinkney, cab-driver, noticed Mr Martin leaning against a verandah post of the Club Hotel helplessly intoxicated. Mr Pinkney states that he left his cab, and assisted Mr Martin to the front door of the building where deceased lived (above Professor Williams' tobacconist, Queen-street), and after seeing him inside closed the door to prevent him returning outside. Deceased muttered something to the effect that he would be out again shortly. The proprietor of the premises, Professor Williams, says that he saw deceased at about 10.30 o'clock lying in the passage snoring, and he was in that position when the Professor closed his shop. Mr W. Dougall, who sleeps in a room adjacent to that occupied by deceased, was astir at 7 o'clock yesterday morning, and on going downstairs found Mr Martin huddled up behind the door. On endeavouring to arouse him, Mr Dougall was shocked to find him dead. Mr Dougall at once went for Dr Cowie, who could only pronounce on the cause of death. Judging from the appearance of deceased, Dr Cowie is of opinion that, whilst intemperance played an important part in the tragic incident, strangulation was probably the immediate cause of death. Deceased was wearing a very tight collar, and, from the position in which he was found, it was this collar that actually caused suffocation. In his helpless state the man would gradually asphyxiate.
Deceased had resided in Masterton some seven years, being first in the employ of Mr Dougall, afterwards going into business on his own account. Latterly he was employed chiefly in working for the trade. Mr Martin came from Glasgow and was a member of the Scottish Order of Freemasons
... At the inquest the jury returned a verdict that the deceased came by his death by asphixia while in an intoxicated state

The late Mr Prince, who was 76 years of age, had not been in the best of health for some time, although two years ago he made a good recovery from a severe attack of pneumonia contracted while on a visit to Sydney.
