SHOEMAKERS in New Zealand 1841 - 1944
SHOEMAKING was a very popular trade throughout the ages and repairs were very important to ensure your footwear stayed in good condition.
The shoemaking profession makes a number of appearances in popular culture, such as in stories about shoemaker's elves, and the proverb "The shoemaker's children go barefoot".
Originally, shoes were made one at a time by hand. Traditional handicraft shoemaking has now been largely superseded in volume of shoes produced by industrial mass production of footwear, but not necessarily in quality, attention to detail, or craftsmanship.
The patron saint of shoemakers is Saint Crispin
Chefs and cooks sometimes use the term "shoemaker" as an insult to others who have prepared sub-standard food, possibly by overcooking, implying that the chef in question has made his or her food as tough as shoe leather or hard leather shoe soles, and thus may be in the wrong profession. Similarly, to "cobble" can mean not only to make or mend shoes, but "to put together clumsily; to bungle."

some (rather bad) shoemaker jokes
* Customer: Are you sure that these shoes are worth repairing?
Shoemaker: Oh yes; I can put new soles and heels on them and also some new uppers. The laces seem to be alright
* A toast at a shoemaker's dinner: "May we have all the women in the country to shoe and all the men to boot"
* "Hello Tom" said his friend, "how's your son going in London". "He's doing fine, Joe. In his letter this morning he said he's worked himself up to the top." "What's he doing?" "He started as a shoemaker, and now he's a hairdresser"
* Why is a shoemaker easily satisfied? - Because the first thing he wants is the last
* "Women endure pain more heroically than me, I know it from experience" declared the quiet little man. "Are you a doctor?" asked his fellow-passenger. "No sir, I am a shoemaker"

taken from HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS
25 March 1865
To his Honor the Superintendent of the province of Auckland
... Sir, - we the undersigned, being deeply interested in the prosperity of this port, and having seen the unjust reflections which have been thrown out against your Government for having agreed to the construction of the breakwater now going on at Point Britomart, beg respectfully to say that we do not concur in these reflections; on the contrary, having seen the shelter which the breakwater, though only very partially finished, has given to the shipping during the recent severe gales, we undestitatingly say that the breakwater, when completed, will be of the most essential benefit to the shipping of the port, and we beg to tender our warmest thanks for the public spirit manifested by you in carrying out this improvement in the face of so much opposition ... more at link above

NOTES of INTEREST
All these soldiers were killed in action, or died of their wounds, whilst fighting on the fields. Hundreds of young men died from the effects of war after returning home from duty. Physical wounds were not the only problems they dealt with! Their stories should also be told but finding them will be harder ...
keeping with this 'Caulfield Theme' is a story of:
Bernard 'babe' Haines from Murrumbeena who enlisted at 14, sailed off to war aged 15 and was shot by Germans in the leg, requiring an amputation at the thigh when he was 16. He had 41 operations at Caulfield Hospital and died there in 1926.
He was 25 years old.
The Argus (Melbourne), 18 March 1926 EIGHT YEARS IN HOSPITAL
Military Patient's Death
General regret is expressed at the Caulfield Military Hospital at the death, on Tuesday afternoon, of Bernard Haines, who has been an inmate of the hospital for eight years. "Babe" Haines, as he was known, underwent 40 operations at the hospital, but was, nevertheless, one of the most cheerful patients, and was very popular with all. Shortly after the war broke out Haines enlisted, and sailed with the 20th Infantry Brigade of the A.I.F. He was then aged only 14 years, and for which reason that he was later referred to as "Babe." Soon after he landed in Egypt he was transferred to France, and at Bapaume, in 1917, after two years of service abroad, he was seriously wounded. It was found necessary to amputate one of his legs, and soon afterwards he returned to Australia, and was sent, eventually, to the Caulfield Hospital. He spent much of his time in the hospital in endeavouring to alleviate the sufferings of others. Soon after he entered the hospital he took woodcarving and art leather work as hobbies, and became very proficient in both.
Tho funeral will leave the home of Haines's parents in Newlyn street, Caulfield, for the Brighton Cemetery, this afternoon, at 3 o'clock.

9 May 1860 - LYTTELTON MAGISTRATE'S COURT
... Robert Abbott and Mary Levy, who were last week committed for trial on the charge of receiving stolen goods, the property of Henry Moss, were to-day further charged with receiving some carpenter's tools, knowing the same to have been stolen.
George Atyeo, the prosecutor, stated that he had been employed in the construction of Messrs. Miles and Co's store on Norwich Quay, for about three months. A chisel and jack-plane which he had been in the habit of using were one morning missing, and were not forthcoming upon search. He had found the handle of the chisel, which was marked with his name, lying in the house from which the prisoners had been removed; and, on application to the police were produced, having been discovered in the same house. He identified the tools produced in court as his own.
Constable Arnold deposed to having found the plane in the house of the prisoners, and the blade and handle of the chisel separately, there also, one in the sitting room and one in the bed room. He took away the blade and the plane, and left the handle, on which the name (Atyeo) was punched. The prosecutor had since then brought the handle to him, and claimed the rest of the property. Witness further added, that the prisoners had been known and the house they lived in suspected as being disorderly, for some time. The neighbours had complained of them. The Bench remanded the case till the 19th instant

... Sir, kindly insert the result of the polling for licensing commissioners at the two booths nearest the Tamaki Hotel, which was closed last June by the teetotal commissioners. The first five names are those supported by people of moderate views, the last four are those who would close all houses. They have polled 13 votes, including a well-known parson, who, if he had voted in his own district (Woodville) they would have had a total of 8 votes. No voters were brought from outside the district. I am, &c., Moderate Drinker
