Captain Baillie, M.L.C. Some time later Mr Greensill took up Arapawa Island, in the Sounds. He represented the Sounds on the old Provincial Council and was one of the very few survivors of that body. He was for a time Mayor of Picton and was instrumental in obtaining for the borough the oldest lay reader in the Dominion of the Church of England, having served in that capacity for 61 years. * It is with regret that we have to announce the death last night of Mrs J. A. R. Greensill, of Picton, youngest daughter of Mr Justice Conolly, at the early age of 29. The deceased lady had been a sufferer for some time, but it was only after her confinement about a fortnight ago that the symptoms of a pulmonary disease became apparent, and from that time the gradual weakening that has been apparent left but little hope of her recovery, and her death last night was therefore hardly a surprise. She leaves behind many relatives and friends to mourn her decease, and two little ones to comfort the bereaved. His Honor Mr Justice Conolly is expected over from Wellington where the Court of Appeal is to sit on Monday, but the date of the funeral will not be fixed till his arrival

OBITUARY
We regret to have to record the sudden decease yesterday of Mrs Greensill, of Picton. Mrs Greensill had been ailing for a few days, though her indisposition was not thought to be a dangerous character. On Saturday she was considerably better, but on Sunday morning at nine o'clock, just after she had risen from the breakfast table, she appeared to be choking and fell back and remained unconscious up to the time of her death which occurred at 5.30p.m. Mrs Greensill was a daughter of the late Mr T. W. Downes, who held various appointments under the Provincial Government in the old days, when the seat of government was at Picton. The deceased had a large circle of friends in the province and leaves seven children to mourn her loss. The funeral will take place at 2p.m. on Wednesday.

NOTES
* The youngest of seven surviving children of John Abraham Roberts Greensill & Selina Rebecca Downes, Nina Agantha Rosamond Greensill, was a teacher & community leader. She married 16 Nov 1904 in Picton, to Thomas Robert Barrer, an engineer. The couple lived in Wellington for the next few years before moving to Wairarapa, where Thomas became a sheepfarmer at Te Wharau. They also had a house in Masterton and spent the rest of their lives in the Wairarapa. In 1959 she was made an MBE for her services to education. Widowed in November 1951, she died in Masterton on 17 September 1965, survived by three sons and a daughter
* John Abraham Roberts Greensill was the Mayor of Picton. In 1905 he was occupying the chair for the fourth time. He named his Picton home on Waikawa Road, "Brooklyn" (demolished in 1992). They received many visitors for afternoon tea or to play tennis, among them was Kathleen Beauchamp who later changed her name to Katherine Mansfield (the writer). Katherine would sometimes go with John to the little Koromiko church, St John in the Wilderness, on a Sunday (now a Heritage Place). Lottie Frame (nee Godfrey), mother of Janet Frame, the writer of 'An Angel At My Table', was a housemaid to the Picton Beauchamps .. (some exerts from Katherine Mansfield Walk)

Ships to LYTTELTON 1850 - 1879

Unless otherwise stated, the ships are listed here in order of Date Of Departure. This does not mean they arrived in this order. That depended on weather conditions, size and speed of ship, number of ports called at and other variables. I have seen voyages that took two months and others taking much longer (Kensington in 1862 took over 5 months). This is obviously not an extensive list as other arrivals were often found during research. Others will be added as found 322

DIPTHERIA
- This disease has been very prevalent in the vicinity of Rangiora during the past few weeks. It has, in nearly every instance, attacked children and its ravages have proved fatal in several instances. A farmer named Barrell, residing near the Woodend road, has lost three of his children from the above cause during a very short space of time and it is exceedingly fortunate that the disease has not as yet show itself in the populous part of Rangiora.

- On January 16, 1938, at Rawene, Abraham Barrell, J.P., of Pahiatua, late of Rangiora, the beloved husband of the late Sarah Ann Barrell; in his 86th year.
OBITUARY
Mr Abraham Barrell
. Following a long illness, the death has occurred, in a hospital at Hokianga, of Mr Abraham Barrell, at the age of 86. He was one of the oldest and most highly respected residents at Pahiatua. At the time of his death Mr Barrell was visiting his daughter.
Mr Barrell was born at Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, England, in 1842, being the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Samuel Barrell who came to New Zealand in 1864(sic 1855), landing at Lyttelton. Mr Barrell, senr., took up land in the Rangiora district.
Flour-milling was Mr A. Barrell's first calling, being apprenticed as a boy to one of the Rangiora mills. Some years later he joined the firm of Messrs Boyd and Keir builders and contractors, of Rangiora, by whom he was employed until he left for the North Island in 1891.
Mr Barrell went first to Mangatainoka, later taking up building in Pahiatua, where he put up various buildings. He married at Rangiora and there were four children of the union when the family shifted to the North Island. Four more children were born to Mr and Mrs Barrell at Mangatainoka. Mr Barrell carried on with his building activities in the district for several years, when he turned his attention to the butchery trade, setting up a small shop at Mangatainoka. Later he entered into partnership with Mr George Early, in a shop in Pahiatua, which was conducted most successfully. Retiring from business in 1910, Mr Barrell disposed of his interest in the butchery to take over a farm property he possessed at Mangatainoka. Some five years later he gave up active farming to live in retirement in Pahiatua. He had been a very keen rifle shot in his younger days.
While living at Mangatainoka Mr Barrell served on the Pahiatua County Council and was chairman of the Domain Board and the Library Committee, besides being president of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society, of which he was one of the founders.
During his residence in Pahiatua he served for a number of years on the Borough Council. He was a member of the Pahiatua A. and P. Association, of which he was president, later being elected a life member.
Ever since he had resided in the district Mr Barrell had been a keen bowler, his association with the Pahiatua Club dating back over 22 years. The club made him an honorary life member some years ago in recognition of his long service as patron and green supervisor.
Mr Barrell was a Past Master of Lodge Tararua and was a member of the Loyal Mangatainoka Lodge, which he helped to found, being the first N.G.
For over 40 years Mr Barrell had served as a Justice of the Peace.
Mr Barrell, who was a member of the Anglican Church, was a strong supporter of the St Mark's Church at Mangatainoka, helping in a large way to have the building established. For many years his eldest daughter acted as organist at St Mark's, serving in that capacity till she married.
Mrs Barrell predeceased her husband ten years ago and a daughter, Mrs Wotherspoon (Frances), died about four years ago. Left to mourn their loss are Messrs Charles Barrell, M.P., Hamilton; Leonard Barrell of Hokianga and Mrs A. J. Ebbett (Gwendoline) of Lake Tekapo and Messrs Raymond Barrell of Morrinsville, Leslie Barrell of Whakatane, Mrs H. Anderson (Stella) of Kaeo and Mrs C. W. In Feb 1913 Miss Mary Ann Slocombe resigned from her teaching position as assistant mistress, at Addington
In Aug 1917 Arthur Frederick Barrell, a teacher at Elmwood School, asked for a further adjournment until the First Division had been exhausted and stated that his wife had been in ill-health for some time. Mr Jones, chairman of the Elmwood School Committee, asked that Mr Barrell should be totally exempted, or at least until the end of the year, to allow him to go on with the teaching of his class of 68 sixth standard pupils. If Mr Barrell was taken away the chances of these pupils would be seriously jeopardized, The appeal was adjourned since die.

NOTES
In Aug 1918 At the Military Service Board. Some time was occupied in consideration of an appeal lodged by Mr Barrell, undertaker, for the retention of the services of his son, Charles Weston Barrell, a married man with two children. Mr Salter said that Mr Barrell was a funeral contractor in a very large way of business, having contracts for several large institutions and conducting about one-third of the funerals in Christchurch. He found it very difficult to get anyone to take up the work, as it was very distasteful. There were two sons in the business, each of whom was paid £4 5s per week. Pahiatua Herald, 5 June 1914
ANDERSON-BARRELL
At St Mark's (Anglican) Church, Mangatainoka on Wednesday, the wedding was celebrated of Miss Stella Gertrude Barrell, third daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Barrell, old and respected residents of Mangatainoka and Hemming C. Anderson, third son of Mr and Mrs J. P. Anderson of Halcombe. The bride was given away by her father. She was attired in a very dainty dress of ivory crepe de chine, trimmed with swansdown, pearl and crystal ornaments and shadow lace. She wore the usual veil and orange blossoms and carried a sheaf of choice chrysanthemums and asparagus ferns. There were two bridesmaids, Miss Ruby Barrell, sister of the bride and Miss Annie Anderson, sister of the bridegroom. Miss Barrell wore a frock of lemon-coloured chiffon tafetta with Oriental and fur trimmings and mob cap and belt of pale blue tulle. Miss Anderson wore a reseda green chiffon taffetta dress, with Oriental and white fur trimmings and mob cap to match. Each carried a handsome bouquet of white chrysanthemums and heath. Mr H. Stunnell, of Foxton, acted as best man and Mr H. Coston attended as groomsman. Mrs Barrell, mother of the bride wore a navy blue costume, black hat with plumes and black wolf furs. Mrs Anderson, mother of the bridegroom, wore a brown silk-striped poplin dress, black toque and black feather ruffle. Mrs Wotherspoon presided at the organ and played the Wedding march as the newly-married couple left the church.
After the ceremony, which was performed by the Rev R. Hermon, the bridal party and guests were driven to "Totaranui" the residence of the bride's parents, where the wedding breakfast was held. The usual toasts were honoured and felicitous speeches made.
The young couple were the recipients of a large number of handsome and useful presents, including several cheques. The bridegroom's present to each bridesmaid was gold wreath brooches set with jewels. The bride presented the bridegroom with a silver cigarette case.
Mr and Mrs Anderson subsequently left by the express train for the North on a honeymoon tour. The bride travelled in a smart tailor-made navy blue costume and black and tango velvet hat. She wore a lovely set of grey squirrel furs, the gift of the bridegroom.

Vera Agnes Barrell (1904-1991)
* daughter of Mark Barrell & Harriet Skudder
married James Ernest Strachan (1883-1973) in Waikuku Beach, near Rangiora, on Jan 1934, as his 2nd wife. They had 2 sons.
* James was born in Dunedin, a son of James Cochrane Strachan, a tailor & Helen Moir. At the age of 15 he became a pupil-teacher and entered Dunedin Training College in 1903. He also took classes at the University of Otago, graduating MA with honours in mental science in 1905. From 1906 to 1910 he was an assistant master in the secondary department of Lawrence District High School and from 1911 to 1917 science master at Gore High School. In 1917 he was appointed principal of Rangiora High School, from where he was able to complete a BSc at Canterbury College in 1921. On 2 Sep 1914 at Lawrence, he had married Mary Irene Chalmers. They had a daughter, 1915-2007 Irene Dorothy Strachan (+ Hawker).
On taking up his appointment at Rangiora, James immediately began introducing reforms to the school's curriculum and organisation, aimed at creating a self-contained and self-governing community of learners. He believed that the school should reflect the community in which it was located and that a curriculum composed solely of professional subjects disadvantaged pupils not academically inclined. He gave more emphasis to existing courses in agriculture, home science and commerce to supplement the traditional professional courses. In 1926 he introduced his 'organic curriculum', which included a central core of science, technology, fine arts and sociology. It was, in part, intended to inculcate social skills such as critical thinking and citizenship.
He was a notable amateur radio expert, credited with having sent NZ's first radio signal (the length of a back garden in Dunedin). He was also chairman of the reception committee that met Charles Kingsford Smith after his epic trans-Tasman flight in 1928.
* James died 30 Sep 1973 in Christchurch, survived by Vera, a daughter & 2 sons (much more at his link - with photo).

NOTE Abraham's father, Samuel (1826-1911) and Susan (1825-1905) Barrell are buried at Mangatainoka, Pahiatua.
Pahiatua Herald, 20 May 1905
It is with regret we record the death of Mrs Susan Barrell, mother of Mr A. Barrell, which took place at the residence of the latter at Mangatainoka this morning, at the ripe age of 80 years. The deceased lady was born at Hartest, Suffolk, in the year 1825 and came out to this colony with her husband in the emigrant ship Grasmere, which arrived at Lyttelton 50 years ago to-day. She leaves a husband and family of four - two sons and two daughters, namely: Mr A. Barrell (Abraham) of Mangatainoka; Mr M. Barrell (Mark) of Rangiora, Canterbury; Mrs R. Baillie (Agnes), Ashley Bank, Canterbury and Mrs C. Todd (Alice Agnes) of Mangaroko, Taranaki. There are several grand-children.
Manawatu Standard, 12 Jan 1911
The death occurred'at Mangatainoka on January 5, of a very old colonist in the person of Mr Samuel Barrell, at the advanced age of 85 years. The deceased gentlemen, who was very highly respected by all who knew him, was one of the Canterbury pilgrims, having arrived in Lyttelton over fifty-six years ago in the 'Grasmere', the first emigrant ship (? see headstone note). For the past eleven or twelve years the late Mr Barrell, whose wife predeceased him six years ago, had been living with his son, Mr A. Barrell, of Mangatainoka.
Their HEADSTONE reads: In memory of one of the original Canterbury pilgrims by arriving in Lyttelton 1855 on the "Grasmere", the first immigrant ship(?). Unsure why that is written because of course, the first ship was the 'Charlotte Jane' which arrived in Lyttelton in the morning of 16 Dec 1850 and the Randolph arrived in the afternoon. The 'Sir George Seymour' arrived the following day and the 'Cressy' on 27th. The 'Grasmere' arrived 4 May 1855, there were more than 35 immigrant ships into Lyttelton before her.

Passenger List RANGITOTO, Wellington to Southampton 1954

THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY (LIMITED)
Passenger List 21 Jan 1954 (needs free sign in)
"RANGITOTO" departed Wellington 21 Jan 1954 for Southampton
NOTE I found that the occupation written on the passenger list was not indicative of what they did, but something was required on the passenger list. An example is Monty Pierard who was simply listed as 'clerk' when he was actually a Canon/Churchman with an MBE and his wife as 'Domestic'. Another is Lieutenant Colonel John W Mckewgow who was simply listed as 'Farmer'. All 252 occupations listed as 'domestic' have been removed (after all, this was 1954, not 1854)
* Estimated Birth Year is what is written at above site. However, the sailing was in Jan so probably out by a year. I have changed those I have researched. Death year will be added as found.
* As with all such lists, it is advised you also do your own research. This is just a help on your ancestors movements.
* All listed as British Nationals unless otherwise stated

Maori Pioneer Battalion, Roll of Honour 1915-1920

Major changes were made to the nature and form of Māori military service in late 1915 and early 1916. The Maori Contingent ceased to exist and Māori troops were incorporated into the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, sometimes referred to as the Maori Pioneer Battalion. They were not front-line fighting units but a military labour force trained and organised to work on engineering duties, digging trenches, building roads & railways and taking on any other logistical tasks deemed necessary. This was essential and dangerous work that was often carried out under fire

*Major George Augustus King, formerly staff captain of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, was appointed as commanding officer. Te Rangi Hīroa was promoted to major and made second-in-command. Both men were considered to have the leadership qualities needed to pull the battalion together. Neither the Otago Mounted Rifles nor the Māori were happy with this reshuffle. The Otago men in particular resented becoming pioneers.
*Hēnāre Kōhere was a 36 year old Lieutenant, a man of great mana, from the East Coast. On 15 Sep 1916, the first day of the NZ attack on the Somme, 12 Pioneers were killed and 40 wounded. One of those mortally wounded was Kōhere, who told those attending him, 'Ka nui te kino' (Things are very bad). He gave instructions that his cousin, Lieutenant *Pekama Kaa, should take control of his Ngāti Porou platoon. He died the next day and was buried at Heilly. Kaa assumed leadership of the platoon until he too was killed in August 1917.

The PIONEER BATTALION returned from war on 6 April 1919
More than 1000 men of the battalion arrived in Auckland on the Westmoreland on the evening of 5 April 1919. As the ship came in to the wharf the next morning, guns fired a salute, steamers sounded their sirens and bands played patriotic music. Dignitaries, including Acting Prime Minister James Allen, greeted the men with brief speeches. The battalion then marched to a pōwhiri (welcome ceremony) at Auckland Domain, where representatives of iwi (tribes) from throughout the country greeted them. After this initial welcome, the various units returned to their home regions.

the shooting of John Henry Lawrence aged 10

THE FLAXBOURNE FATALITY
- CORONER'S INQUEST -
Marlborough Express, 24 April 1906

At the residence of Mr Christopher John Alexander Lawrence, Flaxbourne, yesterday, an inquest was held concerning the death by shooting of John Henry Lawrence, his son, aged 10 years, which occurred on Sunday afternoon. Mr F. M. Foster, J.P., acted as Coroner; and the enquiry was conducted by Constable Southgate.
The following person comprised the jury:- H. W. Elvy (foreman), Wm. Cobeldick junr., John McGregor, John Hoare, Bernard Chapman and A. T. Neugeschwender.
Christopher John Alex. Lawrence, father of the deceased, carpenter, deposed that he last saw his son alive at 2 p.m. on Sunday. At 4 p.m. he was brough back dead by his cousin, Thomas Lawrence. Mrs Lawrence gave evidence as to the latter coming to ask permission for the deceased to go and help him shift some furniture from Hegglun's whare to Chapman's whare.
Thomas Gabriel Lawrence, aged 13 years, cousin of the deceased, was the principal witness.
.. NOTE Thomas was a son of Christopher's brother William Peter Lawrence & Annie Eliza Boxall, see top link ..
He deposed that deceased and he left on Sunday afternoon to go to Chapman's whare. He was going to shift some of his bed things from Hegglun's whare. They each took a load over and were about to go for another load, when deceased found a box of caps and said, "I used to let them off on a nail at Ashburton." Witness told him they were caps for a muzzle-loader. Witness then went for a load, deceased remaining in the whare. When he came back deceased had a gun in his hand and there was a cap on the nipple. Witness, "The gun may be loaded; you had better give me the gun." Deceased gave witness the gun, turned from him and the gun went off in his hands. Deceased fell, rose again and then fell evidently dead. He did not speak. Witness picked him up and carried him to his home. Witness said he did not notice if the gun was cocked,

To the foreman: I do not know if I had my hand upon the trigger.
To a juryman: When the gun went off he (witness) was standing up; deceased was two or three feet from him.

Constable Southgate said he had examined Chapman's whare. He found a double-barrelled muzzle-loading gun upon the floor near the stove. The right barrel had been recently discharged, the hammer being down and a cap on the nipple. The cap looked as if it had recently been put on. The left barrel was still loaded. The gun appeared to have been loaded for some time. An examination of the body showed that there was a wound behind the left shoulder blade. He could find no other marks upon the body. The wound was, in his opinion, quite sufficient to cause death.

The jury gave a verdict that the deceased came to his death by misadventure from a gun-shot wound at the hands of his cousin. A rider was added to the effect that more care should be exercised when leaving loaded guns about dwellings within reach of children.
