William Evetts
Evening Post, 10 July 1933
DIAMOND WEDDING
It is sixty years since Mr. and Mrs. William Evetts, of New Plymouth, were married in Wellington (states the 'Taranaki Herald'). Now, at the respective ages of 82 and 80 years, both are still hale and hearty. A family gathering was held during the weekend in honour of the auspicious occasion of the couple’s diamond wedding. Both Mr and Mrs Evetts (Martha Carvell in those days) were born in the little village of Southam, Warwickshire, England. They grew up together, being boy and girl sweethearts. Mr Evetts was in the employ of the great English engineering firm of Brogdens, with whom Sir Julius Vogel, then Premier of New Zealand, contracted for the construction of the Dominion’s railways. Mr Evetts came out to New Zealand in the ship Halcione, which arrived at Wellington on July 29, 1872. On the same vessel came Miss Carvell, the couple being married about a year after their arrival in New Zealand. There were 13 children of the marriage, of whom nine are still living. These are: Mrs R. Gardner (New Plymouth), Mrs W. Horne (New Plymouth), Mrs D. Williams (Rahotu), Mrs A. Standring (New Plymouth), Mrs J. Harnett (New Plymouth), Messrs Frank Evetts (New Plymouth), Albert 'Mick' (New Plymouth), Carvell (Okaiawa), Harold (New Plymouth). There are 15 grandchildren and seven great-grand children. A grandson and great granddaughter are resident in Suva

Constable Pender has received a telegram from Constable Darby, of Carterton, stating that a young man James Dalgetty is believed to have been drowned in the Taneru River yesterday morning while crossing at Te Whiti ford. His horse was found on a shingle bank in the middle of the river. Search parties have been out, and have dragged it for chains below the ford, but the river is in high flood and very muddy. Nothing can be done at present, but further search parties are arranged for to-morrow

* GEORGE WILLIAM Deller 21 May 1913 aged 59. Plot 67 Old. DELLER - On the 20th May 1913, at his late residence, Bushcroft, Masterton, George William Deller, aged 59 years.
Dominion, 21 May 1913 The news was received in Wellington last evening of the death at Carterton of Mr George William Deller, one of the best-known residents of the Wairarapa and a resident of Carterton for many years. The deceased, who was 59 years of age, was born in London and was educated in that city and in Hertfordshire. As a young man he came to the colony in the ship St Leonards (a clipper of her class which was subsequently wrecked in the English Channel). He settled in the Wairarapa and engaged in log-getting for the saw-mills. In 1880 he established in Carterton a butchery business and developing it on sound lines, became a considerable exporter of meat to the Old Country. When Carterton was proclaimed a borough, Mr Deller was elected one of the first Councillors. He was elected Mayor in 1892 and held that office for several years, during which time he took a very active interest in all public affairs. He was also chairman of the School Committee and a member of the old Taratahi-Carterton Road Board. He was also a Freemason and a member of the Carterton Oddfellows Lodge. Mr Deller leaves a widow and an adult family of seven, all of whom are well-known in the district.
NOTE It surprises me that a former Mayor of the town and such a well-known, well-liked man, who had many obits in the newspapers of the day, whose funeral was "the largest and most representative funeral ever witnessed in the district with a cortege over a mile in length and consisted of 150 vehicles, besides numerous walking mourners" is listed on their database simply as G. W. Deller and we are left to research who it was!

TIMELINE
Evening Post, 12 April 1877 PAINFUL ACCIDENT - A most painful accident occurred at Mr Tonks' hay and corn store, Manners-street, this morning to a man named Philip Fauvel. It appears that it was Fauvel's duty to hoist bales of hay, & c., from the basement of the store to the first floor by means of a rope and pulleys. He was assisted in this work by a steam engine, round one of the shafts of which the rope was fixed. While he was in the act of hoisting a truss of hay about 11 o'clock this morning, the rope got twisted by some means and Fauvel seemed to lose his presence of mind, for, instead of letting the rope go, he was whirled round and round several times. He was unable, after he had been taken round once, to get free from the rope, which twisted round his arms. One of his fellow workmen, who witnessed the occurrence stopped the engine as quickly as possible, but before that was done Fauvel had sustained some very serious injuries. Dr Harding was immediately sent for and on his arrival he found that the unfortunate man's forearm was broken and crushed above the elbow. Two of the fingers of his left hand were torn off a the first joint and his breast was injured. Dr Harding, having attended to the immediate wants of the man, advised that he should be sent to the Hospital. Fauvel was conveyed to that institution in an express.

Wairarapa Age, 11 April 1911 KAIPARORO - Last week a farewell social was tendered to Mr P. Fauvel, who has been a resident of the district for the past twenty years. The hall was crowded with visitors, many of whom came from long distances. A very enjoyable dance was held and during an interval, Mr Falkner, on behalf of those present, presented Mr Fauvel with a handsome travelling rug. It is Mr Fauvel's intention to re-visit his native home in Jersey shortly

married Gladys Helen BROWN (1886-1967) in 1908
* The Fleurys were an ancient family of the French "noblesse". He was one of 7 sons & 6 daughters. His father was the Rev Louis Richard Fleury M.A. Rector of Kilworth, who was the youngest son of Captain John Franquefort Fleury, of Ecclesville, County Tyrone, 36th Regiment and a grandson of the Ven. George Louis Fleury (1738-1825), Archdeacon of Waterford, whose family goes back to the first French settlers who had fled to Ireland.
His mother was Alice Dora Eccles, a daughter of Rev R. G. Eccles. According to the 'Ulster Journal of Archaeology' written in 1856 ... "The intimacy between the Fleurys and Franqueforts would seem to have dated from an early period, as their grandfathers both served under Colonel La Bouchetriére, whose dragoons rendered King William such signal service. Captain Franquefort commanded a troop under him, and the Rev. Philip Amaury Fleury was chaplain. An antique silver cup is now in the possession of Chaplain John Franquefort Fleury, of Waterford, out of which King William (III) is said to have drunk at the Battle of the Boyne. It is preserved by the gallant captain with almost religious veneration. The Communion-cup belonging to the French Church is also an interesting relic, bearing on it the inscription Ecclesiae des Françis Waterford, and appearing to be nearly two hundred years old" ..
* Gladys was a daughter of James Brown & Jane Mitchell

De SMIDT, Henry Jospeh - 4 March 1872 aged 52
De SMIDT, Louisa Christina - 9 July 1904 aged 73 (nee Gohl)
* Henry & Louise married in NZ in 1863. One of their daughters, Dorothea Theresa De Smidt (1866-1927) married Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph George Ward 1st Baronet of Wellington, GCMG, PC (1856-1930) & 17th Prime Minister of NZ. Born in Melbourne, Joseph joined the post office as a message boy in 1869 but was soon sacked for being impudent to his employer. In the meantime he had learned Morse code and later, as postmaster general, he enjoyed confounding dignitaries escorting him on tours of inspection by smartly tapping out his own telegrams. Ward then worked as a clerk at Samuel Nichol's general store on the Bluff waterfront until 1876 when he briefly joined the Public Works Department as chief clerk, handling the loading and unloading of ships. Sometime in 1877 or 1878 Hannah Ward Barron lent her son £800 with which he built storage sheds on the waterfront. Joseph Ward was beginning what became a lifetime mercantile enterprise buying wool, grain and skins. In time he acquired shipping agencies and sold supplies such as grass seed, sheep dip, fertiliser and supplementary stockfeed to Southland's rapidly growing number of small farmers. In 1878, when still only 21, he was elected to the Campbelltown Borough Council. In 1881 he added the Bluff Harbour Board to what became an impressive list of political trophies. In November – aged 25 – he was mayor, a position which he held until 1886 and again in 1897–98. In February 1883 he was chairman of the harbour board as well, a position from which he was able to influence freight rates and wharf space – both important to J. G. Ward and Company. His company now had its headquarters in the Crescent in Invercargill. Ward held the chairmanship of the harbour board until February 1888, resuming it briefly in 1893 when his company grew shaky and freight rates were much on his mind. He remained a member until 1917.
In 1883 27-year-old Joseph Ward, handsome, olive-skinned and with an expansive moustache, married the tall, graceful Theresa Dorothea De Smidt, who was 10 years younger and the daughter of Bluff's rival publican. There were two ceremonies at Bluff, probably for religious reasons, one on 4 December and the other on the fifth. They were to have five children, four of whom spent their childhood years in Bluff before going away to private schools. It was a most successful marriage.
When Seddon died on 10 June 1906, Ward was in London. He hastened back to New Zealand and was sworn into office as prime minister on 6 August 1906... lots more at his link
