NOTES
* Hamar Humphry Arden (1815-1895) was born in England, son of watercolourist the Rev. Francis Edward Arden, Vicar of Gresham. Arrived in Taranaki 1853 with his wife and family, taking up land in Corbett Road. When forced to refuge to New Plymouth during the hostilities, he practiced as a professional artist, making many watercolours often of the same view of the township. Took his family to Nelson 1860, but returned to New Plymouth sometime in 1861. Served in the Taranaki volunteers and so obtained a land grant at Tikorangi. From 1871 he and his son (see above) worked as professional artists; his style was rather more primitive than his son's. Represented in Taranaki Museum, Hocken, and Turnbull. An engraving of a view of Brougham Street, New Plymouth, is in Turnbull
Taranaki Herald, 10 May 1893, DEATH of Alice ARDEN (1819-1893)
Another old and much respected resident of New Plymouth has passed away from amongst us in the person of Mrs Alice Arden, the wife of Mr H. H. Arden. The deceased lady arrived here with her husband in the chip 'Cresswell' in August, 1853, when they went on some land at Bell Block and commenced farming. On the war breaking out in 1860 the family moved to Nelson, returning, however, in 1864, and have resided in New Plymouth ever since. The late Mrs possessed a most amiable disposition and was never wearied of performing acts of kindness and benevolence, which endeared her to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. The deceased lady who had suffered from a long and painful illness, had passed the Psalmist's limit for the span of human life, being 74 years of age. Her illness, however, was soothed by the affectionate and solicitous care of her sons and daughters. Her family consisted of Mr Hamar F. Arden, Mr Henry Arden, Mr Frank Arden, Mrs (Captain) F. J. Mace, Mrs A. R. Langley, Mrs E. Tregear and Mrs (Colonel) Gordon.
The funeral, which was conducted by Mr W. Sole, was a private one and took place on Tuesday afternoon, the deceased lady dying the previous day.

BITS of TRIVIA
The 'Taranaki Budget' in May 1893 read:
With reference of the projected marriage of Prince Francis of Teck to the only daughter of Lord Burton we are informed that the mother of Lord Burton (nee Jane Arden, of Longcroft Hall, Staffordshire) is first cousin of Mr H. H. Arden of New Plymouth. Prince Francis of Teck is probably better known as Michael Arthur Bass, of Burton-on-Trent. Mr Bass was created Baron Burton in 1886. What relation then will Mr H. H. Arden of New Plymouth, Lord Burton's mother's first cousin be to Lord Burton's daughter's husband's sister's husband, the Duke of York!!
Joseph Hamar - Captain of James Cook's First Navy Ship
(?-1774 not known when and where he was born)
On 5 July 1753 he married Elizabeth Limeburner at St. Dunstan?s church in East London. Elizabeth's father was Captain Thomas Limeburner, who had command of the Seahorse in American waters during the War of Austrian Succession (1739-1748) so was a colleague of Joseph Hamar. The following year a daughter, Margaret Elizabeth was born at Greenwich on 4 June 1754.
Hamar became a Superannuated Rear Admiral in October 1758.
His wife Elizabeth died and Hamar remarried. His second wife, Ann(e), was the widow of William Berry and she already had a son, also called William. Hamar?s will, written in late 1773 in Manchester, refers to his house in Hampstead, North London. Hamar died in early 1774, the will being proved in March of that year.
Hamar?s daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Hamar, married the Reverend John Arden 15 May 1775 in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire and died in Yoxall, Staffordshire in May 1842.
The Ardens had a son, Francis Edward Arden, who became the vicar of Gresham in Norfolk.
Francis Edward married Rachel Pinkard about 1802 and they had a son called Humphrey Hamar in 1815. Humphrey Hamar Arden emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1853 and settled in Taranaki... (more at the link at his name)

TAOTAOROA, Waikato - school pupils to 1908
Taken from the site: Taotaoroa Schools Cambridge
In September 1885, two 'half time' schools sharing one teacher between them were opened in the district. Taotaoroa No 1 was near Buckland Road and Taotaoroa No 2 at Whitehall. At the end of 1892 No 2 School was closed. Then at the end of 1896 No 1 School also closed but, then moved closer to Cambridge and reopened in 1899. No 2 School was opened again in 1902, and they continued as 'half time' schools until 1907 when they both became full time schools with their own teachers

.. Two of the three districts concerned in our centenary Taotaoroa and Karapiro still retain original Maori Names. Whitehall, an out-station on the Fencourt Estate became the name for the third district. However when the first European settlers came, practically the whole area was known as Taotaoroa. Early settlers whose descendants have had a continuing association with the area were the Bruce family who arrived in 1871 and the Brunskill family who came in 1875. The 1884 Electoral Roll contained 21 names of men who either lived in or had property interests in the Taotaoroa area
