PICTON, Marlorough, New Zealand - 1905

PICTON is a town in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. It is near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound near the north-east corner of the South Island

The following was written around 1905 and was taken from the site:
Picton Corporation and has a wonderful old photo of Picton Harbour

Picton was constituted a borough in the year 1867. The first Mayor was Mr. Thomas WILLIAMS, who has been followed, in turn, by Messrs A. P. SEYMOUR, W. SYMES, A. T. THOMPSON, S. SWANWICK, A. G. FELL, Thomas PHILPOTS, Captain HARRIS, Dr. REDMAN, and the present Mayor, Mr. J. A. R. GREENSILL, who is now (1905) occupying the chair for the fourth time. The present councillors are Messrs Thomas PHILPOTTS, T. J. STOREY, George WILKINS, J. ANDERSON, G. J. RIDDELL, L. PUGH, H. A. McCORMICK, H. A. SIMMONDS and J. F. ESSON; and the Town Clerk is Mr. Jabez BLIZZARD

The Council Chambers consist of a handsome brick building, with a wood facing. They stand in High Street; and the corporation also owns a shipping port, has a prosperous and famous future before it. The town has a fine climate, and is valued as a health resort, not only by medical men in New Zealand, but beyond the colony. The noble scenery of which it is the centre makes Picton the resort of many tourists. Its site consists partly of level, partly of undulating, and partly of valley land; and the town is hemmed in on three sides by public school, Government offices, the railway station, police station, the Borough Council Chambers and reading room, a public hall, and a large hospital; hotels, a branch bank, a newspaper office, with a bi-weekly issue, and numerous shops and stores. The Union Company's steamers ply regularly between Nelson, Picton, and Blenheim; and besides these, other coasting steamers almost daily eninstitute and public reading-room alongside the Council Chambers.
The town's water supply is drawn from a large reservoir, about three miles up the Waitohi stream, and all the houses are connected by pipes with the main channels. The pressure in the town is about 120lb to the square inch.

As the site of the town slopes away seaward, elaborate drainage is unnecessary; and there is nothing in page 386 this way, further than a few surface channels.

The streets are lighted by means of kerosene lamps, of which there are about thirty; and their upkeep costs about ?11 a month.

The disposal of refuse is at present carried out privately, but improved methods for this work are now under consideration.

The total capital value of rateable property in the borough is about ?126,000, but of this amount over ?18,080 is exempt from taxation.

Rates in Picton are levied on the unimproved values. This system was adopted in 1904, when a poll was taken to determine the matter. The total unimproved values amount to about ?15,900, and certain exempted properties are valued at about ?9000. The rates are 3⅜d in the pound on unimproved value as a general rate; ?d in the pound on capital value, as a water rate: and 1?9th of a penny in the pound as a hospital rate. The total revenue from all sources is about ?2,200 per annum.

The loans now in force are the water works loan of ?5,688, borrowed in 1889 at 3? per cent, the extinction of which is provided for by a sinking fund; and a loan of about ?315, to clear the overdraft. The assets of the town are about ?900, and there are valuable reserves. Picton has a population of about 950 souls, and the distriet's electoral roll contains about 450 names.

His Worship the Mayor, Mr. J. A. R. GREENSILL, has had a long and honourable connection with public affairs in Marlborough. He is referred to in another article as a man of business.

Councillor Jeppe ANDERSON was elected to the Pieton Borough Council in the year 1901. He was born on the second of March, 1843 on the Island of Jutland, in Denmark, where he was educated, and brought up to a farm life. Mr. Anderson spent several years as a lad in the military service of his country, and at twenty years of age came to New Zealand, at the time of the Maori war. He immediately enlisted in the Auckland volunteers, and took part in the conflict at Drury. A little later on, Mr. Anderson went to the West Coast diggings, where he prospered for about fifteen years, and in 1880 he took up a large sheep run at Kokatahi, near Hokitika. This he sold in 1889, and was subsequently engaged for about nine years in the fruit growing industry at Palmerston North. In the year 1899, he removed to Picton, where he has since devoted his attention to grape growing, and the cultivation of various plants and trees. Mr. Anderson takes a consid-erable interest in public affairs in Picton, and has given a good deal of attention to the promotion of the town's welfare. He is married, and has three sons and two daughters.

Councillor H. A. McCORMICK has been a member of the Picton Borough Council since the year 1901. He was born in Pietor, in February, 1870, and is the son of a sheep farmer in the Sounds. Mr. McCormiek was educated at the local Borough School, afterwards learned farming, and in 1897 established himself in business as a general storekeeper in High Street, Picton. In 1901, however, he sold out, and has since conducted a commission agency.

Councillor George WILKINS was first elected to the Picton Borough Council in the year 1901, served for two years, and was re-elected in April, 1905. He was born on the 25th of August, 1861, at Gloucester, England, where his father was an officer in the police force; came to New Zealand in 1874, and completed his education at the Blenheim Borough School. Mr. Wilkins subsequently learned the bakery trade, and established a business in Blenheim, which he successiully conducted for nine vears. In May, 1896, he removed to Picton, and established a profitable business in High Street. Mr. Wilkins is married, and has five sons and three daughters.

Councillor Gerard Joseph RIDDELL, who has been a member of the Picton Borough Council for several years, is the second son of Mr. John Gerard Riddell, of Hermeston Hall, in North Nottinghamshire, England, and was born in the year 1868. He was educated at Stonyhurst College, and came to New Zealand in early manhood. Since 1893, Mr. Riddell has lived in retirement at his homestead, ?Cam House,? near the page 387 township. Mr. Riddell married the eldest laughter of Mr. H. C. Seymour, of Tentersfield station, in the year 1899.

Councilor H. H. SIMMONDS was first elected to the Picton Borough Council at a by-election in the year 1901, and re-elected in April, 1905. He was born in Belfast, Ireland, in November, 1836 and is the eldest son of Lieutenant H. Simmonds, of the 51st

Regiment, Queen's Own Light Infantry. In 1848, Mr. SIMMONDS went with his parents to Tasmania, and in the early fifties visited the Victorian goldfields. He came to New Zealand in 1862, and landed at Dunedin. Four or five years later Mr. Simmonds went to Marlborough, where he worked in turn at Havelock, Blenheim, and Renwicktown, and then took up a farm which he conducted for thirty years at Para, on the Picton Road. In February, 1903, he retired from business, and settled in Picton.

Councillor John Fuller ESSON, who was elected to the Picton Borough Council in April, 1905, was born in Picton on the 13th of November, 1872, and is the third son of the late Mr. William Esson, a Picton pioneer, who is further referred to under the heading of Old Colonists. He was educated at the local public school, and was brought up to farming. At twenty-four years of age Mr. Esson joined the Government service as road overseer for the Marlborough district, but on the death of his father in June, 1902, he resigned his position to take over the farm. This property, which is known as Esson's Valley, comprises an area of 1000 acres, and is devoted to sheep grazing. Mr. Es-son married Miss Webster, of Picton, in June, 1901, and has one daughter.

Councillor Llewellyn PUGH was elected to the Picton Borough Council in the year 1905. He was born in Picton in October, 1874, and is the fourth son of Mr. William Pugh, one of the oldest living settlers in Picton, who is referred to under the heading of Old Colonists. Mr. Pugh was educated at the Picton public school and at Havelock, and was brought up to the building trade under his father. Later on, he spent two years in the local malthouses, and then went to the Auckland goldfields, where he remained for two years. Mr. Pugh subsequently returned to Picton, and after following his trade as a journeyman for many years he joined his brothers in partnership; and the firm has since carried on an extensive and successful business. Mr. Pugh is a member of the Picton Domain Board, and has also been connected with various social clubs.

Councillor Thomas PHILPOTTS is referred to in another article as a member of the firm of Messrs Philpotts and Son.

Councillor Thomas James STOREY was elected to the Picton Borough Council in April, 1905. He is further referred to as the proprietor of the Federal Hotel, Picton.

Mr. Jabez BLIZZARD was appointed Town Clerk of Picton in the year 1897, in succession to Mr. Thomas Younger. He was born in Suffolk, England, in February, 1856, and in the following year came to New Zealand with his parents. For three years Mr. Blizzard lived in Nelson,
and then went to the Wairau, whence, after spending a short time at Blenheim and at Renwicktown, he removed to Picton in March, 1863. He worked with his father at the black-smithing trade, but after his father's death he relinquished that business. Mr. Blizzard has a private office in the Council Chambers, and carries on business as a general shipping agent in conjunction with his public duties. As a lad he kept his father's books; and before he was twenty years of age he was made secretary to the local bodies of Foresters, an office which he still (1905) holds. Since 1886, Mr. Blizzard has been secretary of the Marlborough Permanent Building Society, and was appointed secretary to the Picton Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, in the year 1893. He was a member of the Picton Borough Council for about sixteen years

HAUTAPU cemetery Cambridge - BURIALS pre 1910

The following list of burials was taken from the site
Hautapu Cemetery at Cambridge

After World War Two the Returned Services Association section was established at the cemetery. A Wall of Memories was built and a Roll of Honour with 164 names inscribed on the archway for those who had lost their lives overseas in World Wars One and Two, and South Africa.
In March 1947 James McPherson Stuart was the first returned soldier to be interred in the RSA section. In August of the same year, cypress trees were made available at ?1 each and planted on both sides and the back of the section. Red geraniums were planted in the gardens.

OBITUARY In the passing of Mr Axel William Blixt on September 30, at the age of 71 years, the Ashhurst-Pohangina district has lost one of its well-known and respected settlers. Mr Blixt attended the Whakarongo and Ashhurst schools. He felled a large area of bush in the Pohangina Valley. The bush was right down to the river edge in those days and when he rode from Ashhurst to Piripiri he had to cross the river 26 times. He had contacts with the Oroua and Pohangina Councils for road metalling with his horse teams and was a well-known figure on the road carting timber from the sawmills at Piripiri to Ashhurst station. Some years ago he took up a section in Awahou North and built a home in which he resided till his death. He was one of the early members of the Ashhurst Racing Club. Of a kindly and retiring nature he had a wide circle of friends. The funeral took place at Ashhurst where a fitting tribute was paid to his memory by a large and representative gathering and by many beautiful floral tributes. A service was conducted by Rev A. J. Farnell in the Anglican Church and at the graveside by Bro C. Turner, A.O.F., of which Mr Blixt was a member. The pall-bearers at the church were Messrs R. Port, H. Clapham, E. C. Spallman, W. Whitehead, W. Brewer, B. Caldwell and at the graveside Messrs E. Johnson, W. Byers, I. Borrett, R. Hyndman, P. Kerrigan and R. Davis. Left to mourn his death are his widow, two sons Messrs G. and I. Blixt and two daughters, Mrs J. Brooking, Miss B. Blixt and one sister, Mrs E. Radomski, Palmerston North.

BOWATER - On August 30th 1910, at Palmerston North, George William, beloved husband of Mabel Bowater, aged 36 years, after a long and painful illness.
Mr George William Bowater, of Ashhurst, who died in a Palmerston North private hospital from heart affection, is to be accorded a military funeral at Ashhurst, whither the body was taken yesterday. He was a Sergeant in the Manawatu Mounted Rifles and was highly esteemed by his comrades. Prior to that he had been one of the Wellington Navals and Lieutenant of the Ashhurst Rifles, a corps which has ceased to exist and held the medal for twelve years continuous service. He was only 35 years of age but for about eighteen months has been more or less ailing, though his death was quite a shock and surprise to his friends. Deceased's comrades from Palmerston are to meet here at noon to-morrow and proceed to the funeral, which will take place at Ashhurst at 2 o'clock. He is a member of the Foresters Lodge and there will therefore be a Friendly Society representation at the funeral, which will leave his late residence for the Ashhurst Cemetery at 2p.m. Keen sympathy is expressed for the widow and five young children.

Deceased, Mrs Crowley and family and Mr MacKay (Ronald Fraser Mackay), manager of the Ashhurst dairy factory, proceeded to a swimming pool in the Pohangina river adjacent to the factory fro a bathe. The two men went in and the first indication of anything amiss was when Crowley called out "Mac" to his mate. He then disappeared under the surface and was not seen again. The body was recovered half an hour later in a black and blue condition, suggesting a heart seizure rather than drowning (the Coroner ruled drowned)

OBITUARY - A wide circle of friends will learn with regret of the death of Mrs Elizabeth Evans, which occurred in Palmerston North on Tuesday last at the great age of 97 years. Born in Dudley, Staffordshire, England, Mrs Evans had lived a considerable portion of her long life in the Old World, for it was not until 48 years ago that her husband decided to come out to the Dominion, Mrs Evans and the members of the family accompanying him. The family party landed from the Coptic at Port Chalmers in 1884 and immediately proceeded to Brunnerton, on the West Coast of the South Island. Following upon the death of her husband some 35 years ago, Mrs Evans came north to Wellington, where she resided for a number of years prior to joining her daughter at Waitara. Two years ago she came to Palmerston North to live with another of her daughters and until three weeks ago had continued to enjoy splendid health, despite her advanced age, while all her faculties were unimpaired practically to the last.On the occasion of the visit of Miss Esther James to Ashhurst, at which point this young lady touched in the course of her walking tour of the Dominion, Mrs Evans attended her lecture and, at the request of Miss James, placed her signature among the names of important people which had been collected. The deceased lady centred most of her interests in her children and their offspring and, despite the fact that she possessed 27 grandchildren, she made a point of attending practically all their weddings. Only one daughter predeceased her mother and there are left to mourn their loss two sons and four daughters, the members being: James Evans (Longburn) and John Evans (Ashhurst) and Mesdames Passey (Palmerston North), Raine (Auckland), Williamson (Ashhurst) and Jensen (Waitara). There are also 27 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren.

TRAGEDY AT KOMAKO A gloom was cast over the Pohangina valley yesterday as a result of a drowning accident which occurred near the Komako school when the sole teacher, Miss F. M. Dommett (Florence Marion), aged 23 years and a schoolboy, Vernon Charles Ferguson, aged 9, lost their lives. The only eye witnesses of the tragedy were three other children. When the school assembled yesterday morning there were only four pupils in attendance and at about 10.45 Miss Dommett suggested a swimming lesson in a backwash of the river which contains water over six feet deep in places. At the time of the mishap, the other children state, she was teaching young Ferguson to swim. They were not taking particular notice and the first warning they had of anything wrong, was when they saw Miss Dommett fall and float down into the rapids. The boy Ferguson had dropped from her arms into deep water and as the children could do nothing, one hastened for help while the others went after the teach whom they dragged out unconscious some distance down stream. Nearby-settlers were on the scene as soon as possible and a lady went into the hole fully clothed to bring out the body of the boy. Artificial respiration was commenced but without result and when Dr Putnam arrived he could only pronounce life extinct in both cases.
Vernon Ferguson was the son of one of the best-known settlers in the Valley, Mr Conway Ferguson, and was the eldest grandson of Mr and Mrs C. A. E. Ferguson, well-known residents of Palmerston North and widespread sympathy has been manifested in the tragedy which has overtaken the family.
News of the death of Miss F. M. Dommett was conveyed to the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday and a vote of condolence with the relatives was passed. The late Miss Dommett, whose home was at Crofton, Marton, taught at the Longburn school last year and was finishing up at Komako in a week's time. A sister, Miss Ruth Dommett, resides in Palmerston North

CORONER'S INQUIRY An inquiry was held at Shannon into the circumstances of the death of Walter James Franklin, farmhand, of Opiki, whose body was found floating in the Manawatu River Shannon last evening. J. W. Franklin, farmer of Pohangina, father of deceased, gave evidence of identification. W. H. Barrow, farmer of Opiki, state that deceased had been working for him for the past eight months. On the afternoon of October 30 deceased did not put in an appearance to assist as was his duty. Witness set out at 4.15 p.m. to look for deceased and saw where he had been working on a fence near the river. Looking over the river bank he saw deceased's clothes folded up near the water and his hat lying nearby. Footmarks led down to the water's edge, but there was no sign of deceased so witness notified the Shannon police and a search was made without result. Iraia Peni, a Maori residing near the Shannon bridge on the Foxton-Shannon highway, gave evidence of finding the body. The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental drowning.

OBITUARY A resident of Palmerston North for the past two decades and a former resident of the Ashhurst district, Mrs Anna Maria Harrison, passed away at her late residence, No 280 Victoria Avenue, on Wednesday after a comparatively brief illness. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Mrs Harrison came to New Zealand in company with her parents and the other members of the family in the Carisbrooke Castle in 1875, under the George Vesey Stewart settlement scheme. On arriving in the Dominion the new settlers proceeded to Katikati, Bay of Plenty and Mrs Harrison continued to reside in that district till her marriage some 25 years ago, when her husband moved to Ashhurst to engage in farming pursuits. However, three years later they came into Palmerston North to live in retirement and Mrs Harrison had resided here ever since. Eight weeks ago Mrs Harrison suffered a stroke and, although her condition improved for a time, a turn for the worse hastened her end. Her husband predeceased her in May 1930 and Mrs Harrison's remains were laid to rest alongside Mr Harrison's in the Ashhurst cemetery yesterday, the service being conducted by members of the Brethren, who paid a tribute to the God-fearing qualities of deceased and to her long and active association with the assembly. There were no children of the marriage. The chief mourners at the funeral were Miss Dunn, of Palmerston North and Mr C. T. Dunn of Katikati, brother and sister respectively of Mrs Harrison; Mrs Burns of Palmerston North and Miss Dunn of Katikati, nieces and Mr C. H. Dunn of Katikati, a nephew.

... the following extracts taken from the site Family of John Heath of Manchester, Castle & NZ
.. John married Florence Maria Cooke at St John’s church, Longsight, 22 Aug 1901. John described himself as an ‘agent’, his address as 8 Pine Grove and calling his father a ‘colliery agent’. Florence Maria lived at 8 Vernon Terrace, which was quite close to Longsight railway station; her father was described as a ‘station master’.
John and his lived in Longsight for several years with John’s widowed father. They had two daughters: Florence Mary, 15 Jan 1903 & Marjorie, 30 May 1905. In 1920 the family sailed for NZ. John had a short life in there. He died in Wellington, 26 Oct 1924 at the age of 47. He was buried in Ashhurst cemetery; his death certificate lists him as a ‘storekeeper’. After her husband’s death, Florence Maria and her daughters returned to England, more or less penniless, to settle in London. Her daughter Florence Mary married a doctor, Charles Moynihan who, as a major in the Royal Army Medical Corps, was killed in Singapore during WWII. They had no children.
Florence Maria died 1 March 1956 in London. Her ashes were returned to NZ and buried here with husband John. Daughter Florence died in London 29 Nov 1974. There is a memorial on her parents' headstone (see Moynihan below)
... Their other daughter, Marjorie Heath, was a portrait painter. In 1931, she secretly married Hugh Davison, who became an eminent physiologist. Her story is at above link

... 1st husband of Louisa Aitken above. Plot 24, Block 20
Residents will regret to hear of the death of Mr Thomas Pattinson, a resident of this district for many years. Deceased, who was 72 years of age, was of a retiring disposition and was respected by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and family of five to mourn his loss and to whom we extend our sympathy. Deceased was found dead in bed on Saturday evening and an inquest was held by the Coroner on Sunday, the cause of death being hear disease. Mrs Pattinson left on Tuesday to visit a daughter in the Ohakune district and deceased, as usual, on Wednesday morning, went to work for Mr Akers, returning home at the usual time that night. He was not again seen alive. On Saturday evening a daughter, Mrs F. Read called at the house to see her father and to leave some food, but found the house locked up and could not get any answer to her knocking. She went for Constable Watts and he broke in the door and found the deceased dead in his bed, he having apparently died in his sleep on Wednesday night.

OBITUARY Mr Arthur Peach The death occurred at Ashhurst on Wednesday of Mr Arthur Peach, a well-known early resident of Poverty Bay. The late Mr Peach, who was 82 years of age, passed peacefully away after a short illness. As a young man he emigrated from England to Australia and settled in Melbourne. The lure of the Otago goldfields brought him across to New Zealand and after some years there, he took up farming and settled near Hampden. Later he came to the North Island and took up land in the Hangaroa district at a time when the settlers there had to face great difficulties owing to the absence of road. He later took up land near Ormond and for 28 years lived there. He was a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church and was long connected with its early struggles in the district and was a man of sterling character. He was predeceased by his wife nine years ago (Martha is buried in Ormond) and since then had been living with a married daughter at Ashhurst. He leaves a family of four daughters and one son to whom sympathy will be extended in their bereavement. The family are Mrs Aue (Ashhurst) (Elizabeth), Mrs Barnes (Ashhurst) (Emma), Miss M. Peach (Rotorua) (Mary or Martha), Miss M Peach (Dunedin) and Mr J. Peach (John) of Gisborne.

OBITUARY Jack Howard Vincent The death occurred just after midnight this morning of one of the best-known and most highly respected residents of the Manawatu in the person of Mr Jack Howard Vincent, of Ashhurst. The deceased gentleman recently entered the Palmerston North Hospital for treatment and underwent an operation a few days ago, but he gradually sank and passed away as stated. There were few public activities in Ashhurst and district with which Mr Vincent was not connected during his thirty years residence in that locality. He represented the Otangati riding on the Oroua County from its inception until its absorption in the adjacent riding, doing food work for the settlers over a long period of years. Mr Vincent had also a long and honourable connection with the Palmerston North Hospital Board, having been with the exception of the chairman (Sir James Wilson) the oldest member of that body. He was also a member of the Manawatu-Oroua power Board from its inception and to the varied work of all these bodies he brought sound judgment and ability. The late Mr Vincent leaves to mourn their loss, a widow and family of three sons and three daughters, all grown up. They are Messrs Cecil Howard (Wellington), Edgar Howard (Te Awamutu) and Robert Howard (New Plymouth) and Misses Lily Eileen (Ashhurst), Grace Hope and Esme Joan (Palmerston North)

descendants of George Enos HOLLOWAY

In reply to the query from wackynana 31-3-2010:
Holliday Holloway

George Enos Holloway was born in Devon in August 1837
- he arrived in New Zealand at a young age

In 1896 according to a report of the Auckland Audit Office, George was a Baker in Te Awamutu and applied to the court for an order releasing him from bankruptcy

In 1908 he was a retired Baker in Morrinsville as was Mary Holloway (his wife) & Clive Stevenson Holloway, a Carpenter (a son)

In August 1938 George died just 12 days after celebrating his 101st birthday

In the 'Residents' of Old Cemetery Thames St, Morrinsville, George died in 1938 aged 101 and Mary Holloway died in 1935 aged 85

George Enos Holloway was married to a Mary ? (research continuing)
- they may have married in the UK and had children before emigrating as not all the reported 14 children have yet been found - those so far found born in New Zealand are:
1872 - 1930 Martha Holloway
- Martha married a Farmer, Charles Edward HOLLIDAY (1872-1960) in 1898
- the known children of Martha & Charles were:

1901 - 1992 Samuel Holliday

- their 3 other daughters were:
* Violet Elizabeth Janet Sinton (married Andrew ANDERSEN 1921)
* Isabel/Isabella Myrtle Sinton (married Francis Joseph BIRCH 1926)
* Gwendoline Eva Sinton (married Marcus Phillip Andrews)
1903 - 1957 Walter Henry Holliday
1905 - 1967 Charles Holliday
1909 - 1975 Albert Holliday

- he served in the Boer War as Private 8733 with the 10th New Zealand North Island Contingent, B Squadron, as did his brother Walter Henry Holloway, Private 8704
