BORTHWICK marriages NZ - GROOMS 1863-1929

The page, BORTHWICKS New Zealand is on the site
BORTHWICKs of Scotland, Australia, New Zealand & Philadelphia USA, compiled by Ann CARSON
It contains a lot of research on the Borthwicks in New Zealand, including ... Thomas Borthwick & Co. "Borthwick's Meats" is one of the most well-known Borthwick businesses in the Southern hemisphere. Originally family members were butchers at Ratho on the outskirts of Edinburgh but descendants developed a major meat processing, freezing and exporting business crossing a number of continents. Initially Thomas Borthwick, then a cattle buyer, was based in Liverpool, England. The exact details of establishment of the business in New Zealand are not clear. In 1883 Thomas Borthwick was selling agent for The New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Company. In 1902 Borthwicks bought freezing works from the Waitara Freezing & Cold Storage Company. Then in 1905 they bought freezing works at Portland in south-west Victoria, Australia. For a detailed history of the family's enterprises see the book by Godfrey Harrison, "Borthwicks. A Century in the Meat Trade" published in London in 1963 ...

A Sir Thomas Borthwick was born 1798 and was from Eddleston. He had set up business in Ratho, married a Margaret Colston Trainer from Stow at St Cuthberts Parish, Edinburgh, on 14th December 1830.

Freezing works, 1880s to the 1970s ... The first shipment of frozen meat left Port Chalmers on the Dunedin, bound for Britain in February 1882. It sparked a major industry after its cargo of frozen mutton and lamb sold in London, within a fortnight of arrival, for more than twice the price it would have got in New Zealand. Exports of frozen meat grew rapidly ? they tripled from 4,300 tons in 1883 to more than 12,000 tons in 1884

- By the 1930s British companies with retail butcher?s shops ? including Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Vesteys and the Co-operative Wholesale Society ? had bought many of New Zealand?s freezing works

In 1902 Thomas Borthwick bought their first works at Waitara, Taranaki

In 1928 Thomas Borthwick and Sons bought the Waingawa Freezing Works near Masterton, Wairarapa They already owned or used a number of freezing works in New Zealand and Masterton was to be their New Zealand headquarters from 1930 to 1958.

SMITH burials - GORE, New Zealand

from the SMITH burial database of New Zealand

GORE is a town in the deep south. It is 64km northeast of Invercargill and 70km west of Balclutha.
Dunedin and Invercargill are the nearest cities

As crossing the Mataura River involved a long fording, the locality became known as ?the Long Ford? or Longford.
In 1862 a few town sections were surveyed on the west bank of the river and Longford was named Gore as a compliment to Sir Thomas Gore Browne, an early Governor of New Zealand.
One of the first buildings was Long Ford House an accommodation house opened by local sawmill owner Daniel Morton

There are 181 SMITH in the cemeteries run by the Gore District Council as at march 2011

Electoral Roll DUNEDIN Otago 1893 - sunames starting B

Please read the introductory page to these journals at the following link: the DUNEDIN ELECTORAL ROLLS

The Electoral Roll Results for Dunedin are available (at the above site) for the following years (number on each Roll in backets):
1893 (1,041) - 1896 (5,020) - 1899 (5,835)
1902 (6,456) - 1905 (6,977)
1911 (13.035) - 1914 (13,075) - 1919 (14,937)
1922 (14,485) - 1925 (15,242) - 1928 (17,665)
1931 (18,481) - 1935 (18,300) - 1938 (18,685)

Of interest, to show how quickly Dunedin grew over those 45 years, I have broken down the surname stats:
(remember, some people may have lived there for the whole 45 years and therefore were counted every year)

SURNAME starts with - NUMBER ON ROLL in 1893 = TOTAL to 1938

A - 36 = 5,375

B - 108 = 15,271

C - 104 = 13,958

D - 17 = 7,572

E - 12 = 2,587

F - 44 = 6,505

G - 33 = 8,102

H - 76 = 13,338

I - 9 = 1,095

J - 26 = 4,371

K - 12 = 4,318

L - 36 = 6,392

M - 158 = 23,587

N - 12 = 2,337

O - 13 = 2,199

P - 59 = 7,925

Q - 0 = 365

R - 54 = 9,551

S - 95 = 14,112

T - 54 = 6,921

U - 4 = 221

V - 1 = 704

W - 73 = 11,817

Y - 5 = 614

Z - 0 = 7

My endeavour is to eventually add all the names from the Dunedin Electoral Roll of 1893 (in alphabetical order)

My lists differ slightly from the original site as I have arranged them into alphabetical order for easier research and will add any personal info as found. The original site has a lot more information like, who was at the same address that night, who shared the same ID number etc etc

Electoral Roll DUNEDIN Otago 1893 - sunames starting A

The city of DUNEDIN has played an important role in the history of New Zealand ...
... The discovery of gold inland from Dunedin in 1861 led to the new city becoming the colony's main industrial and commercial centre.
The successful export of frozen meat provided an extra impetus to Dunedin's importance and growth, as did the establishment of the country's first university, founded in 1869 (read more at link above)

This site on Dunedin, the second-largest city in the South Island, includes photos and 'Panoramas' taken from Mount Cargill, Flagstaff and Signal Hill

Dunedin is also famous for the HOCKEN COLLECTIONS which was the vigorous collecting and subsequent generosity of a Dunedin doctor, Thomas Morland Hocken (1836-1910)

A list of all the SUBURBS of DUNEDIN with photos

taken from Hocken Collections above which has links to the collections of maps, pictues and much more
... As a doctor, and coroner for 22 years, T.M. Hocken became one of the city's best-known figures - 'a neat, dapper little man, with a short-clipped beard and dark lively eyes. Bustling, energetic, intensely industrious, he had a winning personality and infectious enthusiasm.'

Hocken applied his drive and talent to the acquisition of books, newspapers, maps, pamphlets, photographs, pictures and artifacts relating to New Zealand, the Pacific and early Australia. He shared his knowledge widely through lectures, exhibitions, his own books and writings and the important Bibliography of the Literature relating to New Zealand, published in 1909.

In 1897, Dr Hocken offered his fine collection to Dunedin and the people of New Zealand. Public subscription lists opened in 1906, and a Deed of Trust was drawn up by which the Hocken Collection was housed in a special wing added to the Otago Museum, and managed by the University of Otago in trust for the nation. Too ill to attend the opening on 23 March 1910, Dr Hocken died two months later.

- the DUNEDIN ELECTORAL ROLLS -

The original list was taken from the "Dunedin Electoral Roll" link directly below and formerly known as the Caversham Project (Class, Gender and the Opportunity Structure in an Emergent Urban-Industrial Society, Dunedin's Southern Suburbs, 1881-1940)
- it was correct to 4 Nov 2010

Visit the above link for your Dunedin Ancestors
It has 169,234 individual Electoral Roll results for the 45 years 1893 to 1938 (from 14 Electoral Rolls over that period) and is viewable with the following results:
YEAR - SURNAME - FIRSTNAMES - STREET NUMBER - STREET - SUBURB - OCCUPATION - OCCUPATIONAL SPECIFICATION - OCCUPATIONAL CLASS - YEAR OF BIRTH - SOURCE OF YEAR OF BIRTH - SURNAME PHONETIC CODE - FIRSTNAME PHONETIC CODE and PROJECT ID NUMBER
... it is very comprehensive and should help you tremendously

The Electoral Roll Results for Dunedin are available (at the above site) for the following years (number on each Roll in brackets):
1893 (1,041) - 1896 (5,020) - 1899 (5,835)
1902 (6,456) - 1905 (6,977)
1911 (13.035) - 1914 (13,075) - 1919 (14,937)
1922 (14,485) - 1925 (15,242) - 1928 (17,665)
1931 (18,481) - 1935 (18,300) - 1938 (18,685)

Of interest, to show how quickly Dunedin grew over those 45 years, I have broken down the surname stats:
(remember, some people may have lived there for the whole 45 years and therefore were counted every year)

SURNAME starts with - NUMBER ON ROLL in 1893 = TOTAL to 1938

A - 36 = 5,375

B - 108 = 15,271

C - 104 = 13,958

D - 17 = 7,572

E - 12 = 2,587

F - 44 = 6,505

G - 33 = 8,102

H - 76 = 13,338

I - 9 = 1,095

J - 26 = 4,371

K - 12 = 4,318

L - 36 = 6,392

M - 158 = 23,587

N - 12 = 2,337

O - 13 = 2,199

P - 59 = 7,925

Q - 0 = 365

R - 54 = 9,551

S - 95 = 14,112

T - 54 = 6,921

U - 4 = 221

V - 1 = 704

W - 73 = 11,817

Y - 5 = 614

Z - 0 = 7

My endeavour is to eventually add all the names from the Dunedin Electoral Roll of 1893 (in alphabetical order)

My lists differ slightly from the original site as I have arranged them into alphabetical order for easier research and will add any personal info as found. The original site has a lot more information like, who was at the same address that night, etc etc
