- On 16 May 1906 in the OTAGO WITNESS, the following Memoriam: ...ESPLIN - In fond and loving memory of our dear mother, who departed this life May 14, 1905. Gone but not forgotten - Inserted by her sorrowing sons and daughter
- David's father Thomson (also known as Thomas) Esplin was born 1830 in Angus, Scotland. He was a sone-mason
- Thomson married for a second time on 15 Nov 1861 to Harriet Emily EMLAY in Midlothian, Scotland
- Thomson & Harriet had a daughter Isabella Esplin on 21 May 1862 in Midlothia, Scotland and they emigrated to New Zealand sometime between then and 3 August 1867 when a son John McDavid Esplin was born in Moray Place, Dunedin
- Harriet died on 9 January 1872 at Dunedin Hospital aged 48
- Her children were aged 9 and 4. She is buried in Block 7. Plot 5 in Southern Cross Cemetery, Dunedin with Malcolm McPHEE aged 5 days, (son of John McPHEE & Mary ENGLISH) and also interred is Jane SUTHERLAND (1836-1862)

Davd Esplin & Wilhelmina Hunter married on 7 February 1869 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland
- They sailed to New Zealand on the Auckland, leaving Clyde on 31 July 1875, arriving in Otago 17 October 1875 with 2 children
in June 1882 - The Outram Town Board received 2 tenders for lighting and keeping in oil etc, six lamps in the township. One was from Thomas Tripp, the other from David Esplin who both tendered ?1 per week (about $160 in 2010). The amount was considered too high and neither tender was accepted

in February 1929 from the EVENING POST ... GOLDEN WEDDING, Mr and Mrs David Esplin celebrated their diamond wedding this month (report the Dunedin "Star"). Mr and Mrs Esplin, who were both born in Scotland, were married at the Presbyterian Church, Brechin, on 7th February 1869 by the Rev. J. Scott, now deceased. They sailed from Greenock in the ship Auckland, which was under command of Captain McDowall, and arrived at Port Chalmers on 28th October after a rough and stormy passage of eighty-eight days. Mr and Mrs Esplin settled at the Taieri, where they resided for thirty years, and had a family of six daughters and four sons, of which seven children survive. Mr and Mrs Esplin have thirty five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren

I know lots about my father's side of the family, Drummond, but little about Mum's. Supposedly Peter Ustinov is a relation through the Ede side, previously Edenstein. Anything will be helpful - this is all new to me ...
