Alice Elizabeth SMITH, ROWLEY, LANGMAN - New Zealand

In an attempt to help Dolina with her query of 1 August 2010:
Looking for Nobes of Hukerenui NZ in which she writes:
... I am a direct descendant of Alice Elizabeth Smith, born 28 March 1882 her Mother was Florence Maud Smith born c 1864 Halstead, Essex England. No father recorded on Alice's birth certificate.
Alice was born before Florence married Edward Rowley on 26 Feb 1885 in the Parsonage of Te Kopuru, they settled in Hukerenui.
Alice married Alfred Nobes 6 January 1898 in Whangarei. Alice had 12 children of which my Father was one. Family names of SMITH, NOBES, ROWLEY, NORTON & LANGMAN were used for birth registrations of her children. Question, I know Alice had later suitors and married John William Langman of Matapouri, but what more can I learn of Alfred Nobes and how many of these children did he Father?
...

Alice married Alfred NOBES on 6 January 1898 as Alice ROWLEY
- on 17 November 1912 in Auckland Supreme Court Alice was granted a decree nisi from Alfred on the grounds of desertion

Alice married John William LANGMAN on 20 March 1913 as Alice ROWLEY

by looking up all the surnames she listed LANGMAN NOBES NORTON ROWLEY SMITH and the children of each name born to an Alice or Alice Elizabeth I have come up with the following list:

OF COURSE, only some (or none at all) of these children may be hers ...

1898 - NOBES, Alfred Jose
- mother Alice
- father Alfred Nobes

1901 - ROWLEY, Annie Florence
- mother Alice Elizabeth
- father not recorded

1903 - NOBES, Beatrice Maude Rowley
- mother Alice Elizabeth
- father not recorded

20 December 1904 - 1980 LANGMAN, John Jeremiah Croyle
- mother Alice Elizabeth
- father not recorded

1906 - 1977 ROWLEY, Frederick Henry
- mother Alice Elizabeth
- father not recorded

1908 - ROWLEY, Hazel Margaret May
- mother Alice Elizabeth
- father not recorded

1910 - NOBES, Gambaldi Mervyn
- mother Alice Elizabeth
- father not recorded

the only NORTON found born to an Alice was:
1901 - Frederick Thomas NORTON
- mother Alice Maud Mary
- father not recorded

the SMITH surnames were much more difficult
- because Alice had a tendancy to not name the fathers I have included a list of chilren born up to 1910 to an Alice without the father:

1895 - Nellie
1905 - Gilbert Douglas
1906 - Beatrice
1908 - Alice
1908 - Henry George

Alice died as a LANGMAN on 23 November 1931 aged 49
John William LANGMAN died on 15 August 1942 aged 75

Nothing found on Alfred NOBES after 1912
- can you please help (add a comment below)

NOTE
A William John LANGMAN was born in Whangarei in 1921
- he served in WWII as Gunner #272205
- his next of kin was Mrs E.D.M. Donaldson (sister), Matapouri, Whangarei
- he died in Whangarei on 22 Nov 2004 aged 83 and is in the RSA Section of Kauri Cemetery
He may be a descendant ...

Oliver Edward SHELFORD & Iritana Te PAENGA - Hokianga

Family tree sites on the web are a wonderfully valuable resource for those of us who are searching and researching our ancestors. The astonishment of coming across someone else who has done all the hard work in finding and documenting the same ancestor you have been looking for for years is, at times, pure joy

Some sites are 'locked' for privacy reasons but others are open for all to see and read and learn from
If the webmasters of these sites give freely of their time and information we need to treat this with the respect that is due

Any information obtained from any family trees needs to be gratefully acknowledged and, at the very LEAST, linked back to so everyone can view the tree in its entirety as originally intended, anything less (eg, scoure of John Smith family tree) is an insult and borders on Plagiarism

the following names were taken from the family tree site of Gil Gurney:
Gurney Whanau of Aotearoa New Zealand who writes:

... Our Maori connections come to us thru our great great great grandmother, Haerehau Hinepounamu NGAROPI, who came from the Ngati Ruanui Iwi of the Taranaki area and their Hapu (sub tribes) of,
Ngati Tanewai and Ngati Tupaea. Thru her marriage to Mukai Te PAENGA of the Arawa Iwi, we get his Hapu of Ngati Rangiwewehi and Ngati Tapuika of the greater Waikato/Rotorua areas

So we are, Taranaki and Arawa, and by capture we are Ngapuhi, which is a story in itself

Their daughter, our great great grandmother, Iritana Te Mukai Paenga, married ex British soldier, Oliver Edward SHELFORD, while Iritana's cousin, Roka Mataura (whose ancestry begins with the great Maori navigator, Turi) married the whaler, William ROBINSON
(with photo of the Robinson whanau)

Iritana and Oliver's daughter, Maraea, married Roka and Williams son, James, who in turn gave us our Grandmother, Jane Robinson
(Jane was the 1st of 13 children)

There appears to be no positive proof, but most of us believe that Iritana and Roka were either sisters or cousins, they were at the very least of the same Iwi (Maori tribe) living in the Taranaki area.

Older Genealogists of the Shelford/Robinson connection, tell us that the girls were part of a large group that were captured (as above) by the pillaging and plundering Ngapuhi people (as they were
want to do on the odd occassion!) from the Hokianga Northland area, and taken back to live in that tribes northern lands, at the time the girls were approx 14yrs of age
...

the WWII names on the ROLL OF HONOUR at DOYLESTON memorial library, Canterbury

DOYLESTON is a small Canterbury township in the South Island of New Zealand. It was named after Joseph Hastings Doyle, a publican from Christchurch who moved to the locality. (Joseph Hastings Doyle was born in Scotland and arrived in Canterbury about 1863)

Doyleston as it was, a small township twenty-six miles south-west from Christchurch, on the Christchurch-Southbridge railway, and about one mile from the town of Leeston

Doyleston's name was once changed to Cheddar in recognition of the importance of the dairy industry to the area, however the friends of the township's namesake, Mr Doyle, argued against the change and it reverted to its original name.

the list of names was taken from the site Doyleston memorial library
... The memorial comprises a small brick library with two large white marble tablets in the entrance porch recording the names of 42 service persons who went to WWI. Of these 6 are recorded as casualties.
Of 32 servicemen who went to WWII from the district, one was killed.
