KAITAWA, Pahiatua New Zealand
KAITAWA is a small farming district situated 8km south east of Pahiatua along Kaitawa and Tiraumea Roads
Pahiatua is usually regarded as being in the Wairarapa, but for local government purposes it is in the Tararua District, which encompasses Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Woodville and Dannevirke.
The areas of Pahiatua, Kaitawa and surrounding areas were not initiated by the government, but rather their origins were in land speculation.
Several subdivisions were established by private landholders including W. W. McCardle, H. Manns, A. W. and Henry Sedcole, and W. Wakeman.
It is claimed that the first settlers were John Hall who arrived on 28 February 1882, followed by John Hughes the next day.
These men, plus the brothers of Hughes and their families, comprised Pahiatua's population the first summer.
The first school was opened in Kaitawa about 1890 with Mrs Swan (a widow from Tipperary) and 23 children. The mail arrived every Tuesday, Thursay and Saturdays at 3.45pm from Wellington
The Kaitawa Butter Factory was erected and fitted up in November 1894 under the direction of the manager and engineer Mr. Olson
There are about 19-20 settlers and descendants buried in the Kaitawa Cemetery

From the HAWKES BAY HERALD - 15th March 1904
Late last evening one of Woodville's pioneer settlers peacefully passed away, Mr Joseph Sowry.
Some twenty-six or twenty-seven years ago he applied to the superintendant, the Hon J. D. Ormond, (John Davies Ormond 1832?1917) on behalf of some 33 would-be settlers for a piece of unsold bush-land of 2500 acres on the north side of the township, which was granted to what was known as the Woodville Small Farms Association in lots of from 50 to 150 acres and with only two or three exceptions these settlers and their families are with us still and are doing well, the credit of whoe selection is greatly due to the late Mr Sowry.
He took a lively interest in all that concerned the progress of the settlement, in its material, educational and oral advancement. He took an active part in forming a road board and as the township grew it was formed into a town board and ultimately into a borough and in each successive stage he has acted as chairman and mayor for a number of years.
In the eary days he also represented the Woodville riding of the Waipawa county. Latterly he was Inspector of Works for the Borough Council and it is to his foresight that many of the improvements in the town are due.
Through failing health his resignation was received a few weeks ago. He was also chairman of the Woodville School Commitee for many years evincig great regard for the welfare of the children of the district.
The cause of temperance found in him a staunch friend and advocate and through him the Rechabite Tent was established in Woodville. His religious zeal was also conspicuus. In the brave days of old when the roads were unformed and in some places were nigh impassable (McLean street North to wit) even on horseback, he opened his house on the Sunday afternoons to the occasional visits of Methodist ministers to hold services and this was continued until the school was built and the roads made passable. Thus were laid the foundations of a settlement which, although small, is a credit to the colony and in all this he had a part.
The deceased was 66 years of age and leaves a widow and several sons, daughters and grandchildren.
Others too will mourn that he is gone

NOTES thanks to rdrainbow or the message on 23-8-2010 which reads ..want to point out a few mistakes. My Grandmother was Ellen Elizabeth Amiens Waldman. She married Hans Hansen, not her sister Ellen who married Ted Dunnage. The reason Ellen has a different father's name is because Phillip Waldmann was not around at the time. Ellen's father was Thomas Stainton DIXON. I have never heard of a son called Robert, but will check this. There where two more sons. Phillip was Rebecca's first born (1874) and died 1875. James Phillip Meadon Waldmann was born Sept 1875 died and buried in Napier 1934, never married. Phillip and Rebecca were married in London June 17th 1873. Came to NZ the same year
the children for Ellen Rebecca Smart WALDMANN as listed on NZ Births Deaths & Marriages, all registered as WALDMANN

Thomas Stainton Dixon (1843-1888) was a storekeeper in Dunedin. He died there 22 Feb 1888 aged 45 and is buried Northern Cemetery. He married Ellen Fanny Egerton (1856-) in 1870 but no children found. Although he was not married to Rebecca, I am going to link them for the sake of their 2 children and interested descendants.
