... In our obituary of to-day is recorded the death of JOHN JOHNSON, (aged 60) one of the oldest colonists of New Zealand.
Mr Johnson, who was a shipwright by trade, came to Hokianga in 1831 as carpenter of the brig 'Sisters', a flax trader from Sydney, which he left and settled on shore. Some time after he established a hotel at the Bay of Islands, called the 'Duke of Marlborough' and had the hotel up to the time of the sacking of Kororareka
(10 March 1845), from which he retired three years ago.

A few days since Mr Johnson came up to Auckland in order to place one of his sons, who was suffering from some ailment, under the care of a medical man in the city; and on Thursday last, when standing in Dr Merrett's shop, he was struck with paralysis. He was immediately conveyed to the house of Mr Lundon, Kyber Pass Road, where he died yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Charles Thomas Barriball, J.P., Chairman of the Waiuku Road Board, is the third son of the late Mr. Charles Barriball, one of the most prominent and respected of the pioneer settlers of Waiuku. He was born in 1845, near Auckland, where he was educated, and came with his parents, in 1860, to Waiuku, where he started farming with his father?an occupation which he has since carried on successfully. At an early age he began to take a keen interest in the general affairs of the district, and at the age of twenty-four was elected a member of the Waiuku Road Board, to which he gave his services until 1899?a period of over twenty years?and was chairman of the Board for the greater part of that time. In 1901 Mr. Barriball was again requested to give his services to the Board, and he was again elected chairman. There are now twenty miles of good roads in the district, and six miles are metalled. Mr. Barriball is a member of the school committee, of which he has been for nine years continuously chairman. He is also chairman and trustee of the Temperance and Public Hall, and a member of the Domain Board. He was long connected with the volunteers, and was one of the original members of the Waiuku Cavalry for about thirty years. For the first half of that period he was sergeant, and for the remaining half sergeant-major, and holds the long service medal. Mr. Barriball has for years devoted his attention to the welfare of the Wesleyan church, and was instrumental in collecting funds for the erection of the present church in 1883, the Barriball family contributing most liberally to that object. It is a fine building, capable of seating 200 worshippers. Mr. Barriball is a well known breeder of Lincoln sheep, and an exhibitor and prize-taker at the leading shows in the province, having won numerous certificates, championships, and silver cups. He has always taken a leading part in the various agricultural and pastoral associations, and was three years successively president of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Association. For over thirty years he has been a strong advocate of temperance. In 1872 Mr. Barriball married Miss Hodge, and they have

OLD SETTLERS DEATH
... One of the best-known settlers in the farming districts around Auckland died on Monday at Waiuku - Mr Charles T. Barriball, at the age of 71. The father of deceased, the late Mr Charles Barriball, was one of the earliest of Auckland's pioneers, having arrived in the Waitemata 73 years ago and settled in 1860 at Waiuku, where numerous branches of his family still reside.
Mr C. T. Barriball was born at Mount Eden in 1845. At an early age he served upon the public bodies of his district. For 20 years he was a member of the Waiuku Road Board and for a very long period its chairman. His service on the local school committee extended over 30 years and for more than 20 years he occupied the chair. Another period of about 10 years was covered by his membership of the Auckland Education Board as representative of the west ward. More than 50 years ago Mr Barriball was in the Waikato Militia, and later on he was a sergeant in the Waiuku volunteers, famous at that time for its prowess in military sports.
A successful farmer, he specialised in the breeding of Lincoln sheep, and was conspicuous amongst the prize takers at the Auckland district agricultural and pastoral shows.
Mrs Barriball, who survives hi, was before her marriage, Miss Hodge, whose relatives are well known settlers at Papatoetoe.
Their children comprise three sons:- Messrs, Eber, Wesley and Stanley Barriball, the last named being now in camp at Featherstone - and seven daughters - Mrs W. E. Smith, Te Aroha; Mrs F. G. Parker, Waiuku; Mrs H. Fenwick, Hamilton; Mrs F. Hosking, Auckland; Mrs A. Pickett (sic), Huntly; and Misses Ella and Louisa Barriball.
An older brother of the deceased, Mr John Barriball, is still living in the district, and is more than 80 years of age

EARLY SETTLER MOURNED
... The funeral of the late Mr C. T. Barriball took place today, the gathering of mourners being one of the largest ever seen in the Waiuku district. Among those present were the members of the Auckland Education Board, on which body the deceased represented the West Ward for ten years. The Waiuku school was closed for the day, the deceased having been member of the local School Committee for 30 years, during twenty of which he was chairman. People from all parts of the district were present, as well as a number from Pukekohe, Papakura, and other places.
One of his sons, Private Stanley Barriball, was present on special leave from Trentham.
The service was conducted by the Rev. J. Clover, of the Waiuku Methodist Church of which the late Mr Barriball had been a very active member

ASHCROFT - GRIFFIN A quiet and pretty wedding was solemnised at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Parnell, on Wednesday 11th February, when Miss Esther Maude Griffin, second daughter of Mrs and the late Edmund A. Griffin, was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr Eric A. Ashcroft, eldest son of Mr and Mrs R. W. Ashcroft of Hamilton and late of Wairarapa. Rev Dr O'Callaghan officiated. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr R. T. (Roydon Trevor Whitney) Griffin, looked sweet in a dainty dress of white Kobe silk, with the usual veil and orange blossoms. She was attended by her sister, Miss R. (Ruby Catherine) Griffin and Misses Dorothy Ashcroft, sister of the bridegroom and Joan Pain (Joan Elwyn Adele), niece of the bride (3 year old daughter of her sister Ethel Ruahine Pain), who carried bouquets of pale pink and asparagus fern. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a pendant of fold and aquamarines and to the bridesmaids plain gold bangles. After the ceremony the wedding party adjourned to the Domain Kiosk. where the bride's mother entertained about thirty guests. The usual toasts were honoured and responded to. Subsequently the happy couple left, amidst the many good wishes of numerous friends, for the first stage of their wedding trip. Mr and Mrs Ashcroft sail per Moana for California at an early date.
they had a son, Eric Robert 'Bob' Ashcroft (1927-2007). Bob was 7 and living in Palmerston North when he lost his eye in an accident. He had attended a xmas party and was given a toy gun with a tin barrel. As he arrived home he tripped as he ran across the road and fell on the barrel which penetrated his eyeball. It could not be saved. He married Vivienne Joyce & had 5 children. Dr Eric Ashcroft wrote "The Standard 3 - Form 2 Drug Abust Prevention Kit; an evaluation in 1989" a resource designed to assist police, education officers and teachers to jointly enable and educate young people to make sensible choices about drug use. In 1995 a drug education programme for parents and caregivers "Dare to Support your Kids" and many others. He died at Wellington.

His next of kin was his mother at Arapae, King Country.

In Oct 1928 Harold was in an accident at the junction of Avenue Road 6 Panmure Road, Otahuhu, between his motor-cycle and a motor car driven by Henry Lloyd. He received severe bruises on his left arm and ankle and, suffering from shock, was taken to the hospital.

They were in Paeroa in 1938 when their youngest son, also Leo Martin Pippen (1911-2002) became engaged to Helen Mary 'Nell' Reily.

FALLOWS - ASHCROFT A very pretty wedding was solemnised at St Paul's Church on Wednesday, December 10, when Miss Dorothy Ashcroft, daughter of Mr and Mrs R. W. Ashcroft, of Hamilton, was married to Mr Alfred Fallows, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. Farrows, of Puni, Pukekohe. The ceremony was performed by the bride's uncle, Revd. A. Ashcroft (president of the Methodist Conference). Mr T. S. Webster presided at the organ. The bride looked very charming, as she entered the church on the arm of her father, in a dainty frock of cream brocaded crepe de chene, she also wore the orthodox veil and orange blossoms and carried a lovely bouquet of tiny lillies and asparagus fern. She was attended by two maids, Miss Ethney Cobb, cousin of the bride, who wore a pretty silk frock of white and mauve and carried a mauve bouquet and Miss Joyce Ashcroft, sister of the bride, in a sweet little frock of white and blue silk with a bouquet to match. After the ceremony the guests were entertained at the residence of the bride's parents where a sumptuous feast was spread and partaken of, the usual toasts being honoured. The happy couple then left, amidst the best wishes of their many friends, by motor on the first stage of their wedding trip. The young couple were the recipients of many useful presents, including a set of cutlery and silver from the staff of the New Zealand Loan and mercantile Co., of which Mr Fallows is a member.
Evening Post, 26 Sep 1930 WHAKATANE - A motor-car accident occurred in the Waimana Gorge and Alfred Robert Fallows, a traveller, resident of Hamilton, lost his life.
Mr Kirk, a settler, of Waimana, riding through the gorge, noticed the marks of a car leading over the bank on Douglas Hill. On investigating he saw a car submerged in the Waimana River, 40ft below. He reported the matter to the police at Taneatua.
The car was recovered from the river this morning and the body of the victim of the accident was recovered later about three-quarters of a mile lower down the river. The body was removed to Whakatane.
Mr Fallows was 32 years of age and a son of Mr W. J. Fallows of Pukekohe. He leaves a wife and two children. He was well known in Hamilton. For a number of years Mr Fallows was secretary of the Hamilton Suburban Tennis Association and a member of the Waikato Hockey Association executive. At the time of his death he was sitting as Noble Grand of the M.U. Oddfellows Lodge. He was on the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co. for 14 years. Twelve months ago he joined the Goodyear Rubber Co. at Hamilton as a traveller. He left Hamilton on Tuesday morning for Gisborne. He was expected back last night

* born Cobb on 9 May 1912, Joy was the youngest daughter of Elsie's brother Percy Cobb & his wife, Charlotte Mary Drury. Charlotte died in the 1918 Flu Pandemic aged 37, leaving 3 young daughters who were placed in a children's home. Joy was taken in by Robert & Elise, officially adopted in 1923 when she was 10 and her name became Ashcroft. Joy married Walter 'Nelson' BURGESS (1913-2002) as his 2nd wife in 1938 and they had 3 children. Nelson served in WWII as Sergeant 562756, with the 27th Machine Gun Battalion, enlisting from Thames, Coromandel in 1944. His next of kin was Joy at 68 Brown St., Thames. They also lived in Hauraki, & Auckland and were divorced there in 1967. In 1981 Joy was living in Mount Albert.
Joyce Harriet Burgess died 17 Oct 1994 in Christchurch.
* Nelson 1st married Edith Alice Robinson in 1914. He married Joy in 1938. He next married Ellen Aldyth Elsa 'Pat' (nee Pryce, previously Campbell 1912-1993). Ellen is buried in Papatoetoe with her 1st husband. Nelson died 2 Sep 2002 in Auckland & buried Waikaraka.

On 10 Sep 1930 Robert's father James was living with them in Otahuhu when he died aged 89
Mr James Ashcroft, who died at Otahuhu on September 10, aged 89 years, was born in Lancashire and came to New Zealand in 1884, settling in Napier district. On his retirement he came to live in Auckland. He is survived by the following sons:- The Rev Arthur Ashcroft of Oamaru, Mr Robert Ashcroft of Otahuhu, Mr Peter Ashcroft of Napier and Mr Septimus Ashcroft of Hastings. The mother of Mr Ashcroft was one of four sisters who were the descendants of John Guy, who, 200 years ago, founded and endowed Guy's Hospital. Dr D. W. Ashcroft is about to enter that hospital to complete his medical training.

Obituary of Mr R. W. Ashcroft Mr Robert Walker Ashcroft, who was born in Lancashire, England in 1870, passed away at Otahuhu, Auckland, last month. He came to New Zealand in 1884 with his parents and brothers. He is survived by Mrs Ashcroft, four sons and one daughter; also by nine grandchildren. Rev Arthur Ashcroft of Palmerston North, is one of his brothers, the others being Peter of Napier and Septimus of Hastings. The deceased took an active part in the life of the Dominion, being an enthusiastic Mason and a preacher. He was a member of the Royal Sanitary Institute and from a gift of invention he enriched the country of his adoption. As a maker of violins he won and enviable reputation. Being of a cheerful and kindly disposition he made many friends and his surviving relatives have the happy memory of a husband and father much beloved.

... Old residents of Pleasant Point will remember Mr David Anderson, who carried on business as blacksmith and coachbuilder in the township from some time in the sixties till 1886, when he moved to Napier and later to Dannevirke. News has been received of the death of Mr Anderson a few days ago.
He was a native of Clatt, Aberdeenshire, and had reached the age of 80 years. The local paper states that the late Mr Anderson was a popular townsman. He possessed a fund of humour, and was always ready with a smart retort or witty reply. He took a keen and intelligent interest in all local and political matters, and his death removes a very familiar figure among the old identities of the place.
Deceased is survived by four sons and five daughters. Two of the latter are Mrs G. SAUNDERS and Mrs W. B. ANDREW of Pleasant Point.
The interment took place at Napier on Saturday, where the remains of deceased's wife, who died some years ago, were interred

The only tow survivors of the band of pioneers who originally came to Mauku 67 years ago are now Dr J. Giles and Mr. W. Gearson, of Auckland.
Mrs Crispe was the youngest daughter of the late Mr John Mellsop, who, with his family, arrived at Auckland by the Carnatic on December 27, 1855. A few months later they proceeded to Mauku where settlement was just beginning, and took up land. All communication with the outside world was then by way of an arm of the Manukau, there being no roads. One of the difficulties of frontier life then was to obtain an education for children, and in Mrs Crispe's case it was solved by sending her to be taught with the children of the Rev. John Morgan at Te Awamutu. This meant a canoe journey of three days up the Waikato and Waipa Rivers, with halts at Kohanga, where the Rev. Dr. Maunsell had a mission station, and at Rev. Mr. Ashwell's mission at Taupiri. During the two or three years she spent at Te Awamutu Mrs Crispe witnessed the birth of the "King" movement and the coronation of Potatau (Te Wherowhero), the first "King"
In the year 1861 the natives of Patumahoe, who had always been unfriendly toward the adjacent Mauku settlers, became so threatening that the Government deemed it prudent to remove the woman and children to a place of safety and arm the men. The immediate cause of the crisis was the finding of the dead body of a native named Eriota, who the Maoris chose to believe had been shot by a white man. The non-combatants were all taken aboard a schooner en route for Onehunga, and the men garrisoned Major Speedy's house. The next day the natives, having given satisfactory assurances of their pacific intentions, the fugitives returned to their homes. Later it was proved beyond all reasonable doubt that Eriota had been murdered by a slave named Pukapuka.
Two years later, when the Waikato war broke out, there was another hurried flight of the settlers from their homes. This time, after spending three days and nights in the church, guarded by the rifles of the Mauku volunteers, the women and children were conveyed to Auckland, not to return for nearly a year. The men, under the command of the late Major D. H. Lusk, remained, and put up a record for bush-fighting only exceeded by Jackson's and Von Tempsky's redoubtable Forest Rangers. Of the, only two are known to be still living. Mr James Finlay, of Auckland, and Mr Charles Dromgool, ot Tuakau.
In 1874 Mrs Crispe married, her husband being the late Mr Heywood Crispe, one of the original settlers, and a member of the Forest Rifles, who died about 15 years ago. There are three sons, Messrs H. M. and Clarence Crispe, of Mauku, and Mr Colin Crispe, of Clevedon

SUDDEN DEATH AT MANGERE
... Quite a shock was experienced through the Mangere district yesterday morning when it became known that Mr James Mellsop, head teacher of the Mangere school, had died suddenly at his residence about midnight on Sunday. Mr Mellsop was enjoying the best of health until 10 o'clock on Sunday night, when, as he was preparing to retire, he was seized with an apoplectic stroke. Dr Scott, of Onehunga, was summoned by telephone, and arrived within three-quarters of an hour, and stayed by his patient till death took place. Mr Mellsop has been head teacher of the Mangere school since June, 1884, a period of nearly 16 years. His death is not only a great loss to the Mangere district, but a distinct loss to the teaching staff of the Auckland Education Board. During his term of office at the Mangere school the annual high percentage of passes, the number of scholarships and honours taken by his pupils, as well as the tome and discipline of the school, show a splendid record.
Mr Mellsop leaves a widow and three children, the youngest of whom is eight years of age. They are assured of the deepest sympathy of the residents of Mangere in their great bereavement

The addition of two hundred and fifty souls to a small population like that of Southland would, at any time, be a matter of considerable importance, but, unfortunately, the immigrants by the Sevilla have just set their feet on the shores of New Zealand in a season of unusual depression, which is not confined to Southland, but is participated in, more or less, by the whole of the Colony. Want of money is a complaint heard everywhere, from the Provincail Treasury to the counter of the smallest tradesman, It may be, and perhaps we are right in asserting, that the worst is over, and that advancing spring will see a return of prosperity to every branch of industry; but, if the tide has turned, its effects are scarcely to be recognised at present, and probably will not be for some time to come.
The idea that Southland is irretrievably bankrupt has been too widely circulated and is too firmly believed in to be got rid of at once, and the real difficulties of the situation are so great that we must expect that a return to the ordinary briskness of a young settlement having within itself all the elemnets for advancement, will not be accomplished very rapidly.
No one will be inclined to deny that a great deal of real distress has existed amongst the working classes during the winter which is now drawing to a close. Cases have come under our own notice of men being unable to obtain work for a lengthened period - men who were known as industrious and useful members of society. This has been partly rectified, as far as this province is concerned, by the departure of some to the diggings, and to Dunedin where work if fully as difficult to obtain as here; but there is still a very moderate demand for labour of any kind in Southland, and we fear there will be great difficulty in getting the whole of the immigrants by the Sevilla remunerative employment.

Our remarks are very far from being intended to dishearten those who have just joined us, but it is reight that they should have the truth place before them plainly, in order that they may not lose opportunities for employment which may offer, under the impression that a fair remuneration is bot being offered for their services.

We suppose many of these immigrants received letters from their friends and relations in the colony before they sailed, and those letters would probably be written at a atime when labour was worth far more, and employment was more easily to be obtained than it is now. It is a very good rule for fresh arrivals not to be too particular on the subject of wages when first they land. The great point is to get to work as quickly as possible, to forsake the precincts of immigrant barracks and identify themselves, as it were, with the community of which they are destined to form a part. If the first engagements which offer are not all that can be desired, and the remuneration is not as large as was expected, the immigrant will have the satisfaction of knowing that he is at least supporting himself honestly, and gathering experience on many matters of which he was totally ignorant when he landed, but the knowledge of which will materially add to the value of his services when next he is on the look-out for a situation.

Amongst the immigrants by the Sevilla are some of a class which has not before been represented in Southland, and it is very questionable whether they are the best qualified to succeed in colonial life. We allude to the Girvan weavers (*see notes at end). These men have not, however, been used altogether to the loom; we are given to understand that a large portion of their time in the old country has been spent in agricultural pursuits. Some of them are expert gardeners, and all have some idea of outdoor work. It has occurred to us that the time may not be far distant when they may find renumerative employments at their own peculiar trade. In the Province of Nelson some attempt had already been made to initiate the manufacture of woollen goods. Cloths of the coarser kinds are made and sold, we are assured, at paying prices. To commence anything of the kind down here at once would require more capital than is likely to be forthcoming, but that which has been done in Nelson could be attempted in Southland with an equally good prospect of success, and we do not despair of seeing this branch of industry established.

We see that a notice has been fixed outside the Government Buildings, inviting such of the immigrants as are desirous of obtaining employment to call at the Provincial Engineer's Office. We suppose this has been done with the intention of giving them work, but what that work is to be, or where the Government, which is not able to meet its present liabilities, is to find the money to pay the workmen, is more than we are able to tell. It is well that these men should understand at once that the Provincial Government is not in a position to go into the market as an employer of labour. Temporary assistance it may be able to afford, but even that will be at the expense of those who have prior claims on the treasury. It is to be hoped that if such work is given, care will be taken that it shall be os some ervice to the public, and not uselessly thrown away as so soften happens in such cases.
Enough money has been wasted in times when the Province was better able to afford it, but now when the Government is burdened with debt in all directions, double precaution should be used that a like extravagance shall not be indulged in.

There is one outlet for the surplus labour of Southland which we have not hitherto touched upon, but it is one which, at the present juncture, should not be overlooked. To an able-bodied and industrious man the goldfields offer a very fair field for exertion, with a reasonable prospect of good remuneration, and the chance of something better. No doubt some of the new-comers will turn their attention in that direction. Supposing him to possess the requisite health and strength, and a small supply of cash to obtain the necessary outfit, and to support him for some little time after his arrival on the diggings, we do not see that a labouring man could do better than pay a visit to the Lake goldfield. Although even there the dullness of the times has been largely felt, and the yield of gold has decreased, there are many who are doing well, working either on their own account or for wages. There is also that ground which was recently opened in the vicinity of Mr Roger's station, on the Mataura, which a few days since promised so well, and where the sinking is but a few feet.

One thing we can assure the immigrants by the Sevilla, that however bad times are at present, and however great the difficulty they may experience in obtaining employment at first, they are, after all, as certain of ultimate success in their new home as it is possible for men to be of anything in this world, if only they are true to themselves and honestly face the difficulties which they will be sure to encounter at the outset.

NOTES so bad was the employment situation in Ayrshire for hand-loom weavers, that a petition was sent to the NZ Government in 1863 by the Girvan Hand Loom Weavers Emigration Society requesting free passage. The Southland province responded by chartering the Sevilla to deliver 250 immigrants (hence the rather 'strained' letter above)

Councillor John STEAD, who represents Third Ward in the Invercargill Borough Council, was born at Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland, but at an early age left his native land with his parents, and arrived at Invercargill in 1864 in the ?Sevilla,? the first immigrant vessel chartered by the Provincial Government of Southland. Mr. Stead was educated partly in Scotland, and partly in his adopted town, and, on leaving school, was apprenticed to the drag trade. he was also engaged for some time in conveying the inland mails to the western districts, and afterwards served an apprenticeship to the boot trade with the well known firm of Messrs. Sloan and Sons, with whom he remained for nine years. He was afterwards with Messrs Kingsland and Sons for seven years, and in 1886 commenced business as boot and shoe importer in Deo Street. Councillor Stead was first returned to the Borough Council in 1890. since which the ratepayers of Third Ward have manifested their approval of his actions as their representative by repeatedly re-electing him. Mr. Stead has been long identified with Odd-fellowship in the Southland district, having joined the St. George's Lodge, Manchester Unity, on the 20th of September, 1875. He subsequently, filled the offices of E.S.V.G. and N.G.; in March, 1894. was elected D.D.G.M., and chosen G.M. at the following annual meeting. Mr. Stead is a trustee of the Friendly Societies' Dispensary, and of the Southland Hospital. He also takes an active interest in St. Paul's Wesleyan church, of which he is a trustee. In 1877, Mr. Stead married Florence, daughter of Mr. Joseph Small, and has several children.
