FRANCESCA MARTA ISKIRKA
born in New Zealand to John & Clara (Klara) Iskirka

Her father, Jan (Jan/Johann/John) Ignatz ISKIRKA/Iskierka, arrived in Wellington on 18 March 1876 on the Terpischore and was listed as single, a labourer from Denmark (but not true, his name is German. Possibilities are Prussian occupied Poland or the High Tatras (Vysok? Tatry, Tatry Wysokie).

Her mother, Clara MALGRAFF, was born in (possibly) Prussian Stargard and arrived in Wellington on 23 March 1876 with her father Johann, mother Johanna & sister Auguste on the Gutenberg (there was also a brother, Anton Johann Iskirka, not yet found where he was born. Clara's English was very good and she was used as a Court Interpreter on many occasions

* In April 1877 the Wanganui Post Office had an unclaimed letter for Johann Iskirka. I believe he was in the Foxton, Manawatu area by then
* In 1884-85 he was a ratepayer in Palmerston North of Section No.245, allotment

The local police received information this afternoon that a man named Joe Iskirka, while bushfelling on O"Neill Bros. land near Kakatahi, on the Raetihi-Parapara raod, thirty miles inland from Wanganui, met with a serious accident. A tree fell on him, smashing one of his legs, and otherwise injuring him, rendering him unconscious. One of his mates brought word to the telephone exchange at Kakatahi, and Wanganui was communicate with. The ambulance wagon has been sent out to bring the unfortunate man into town. The accident occurred at 11 o'clock, and at two o'clock Iskirka had not reached Kakatahi, whither he was being carried on a stretcher by his mates

WEDDING BELLS - A quiet but pretty wedding took place at St Patrick's Church, Palmerston North, on Easter Monday, when Miss Jane Iskirka, youngest daughter of Mr John Iskirka, was united to Mr Joseph White, fourth son of Mr William White, of Berkshire, England, and late of Napier. The bride, who was given away by Mr G. Guliver, looked charming in a dress of cr?me radiant, the bodice being in silk overlace, wore the orthodox wreath and veil, and finished by a silk girdle. She carried a shower bouquet of white blossoms and maiden hair fern. The bridesmaids were four in number. Miss Rose White, of Napier, sister of the bridegroom, who was chief bridesmaid, was attired in a gown of pearl grey silk voile, with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of white cosmos and ivy. The other bridesmaids were the Misses Margaret and Vita Carnell, of Te Kuiti (nieces of the bride), and Miss Dorothy Spinks, Napier (niece of the bridegroom). The former wore dresses of cr?me silk, trimmed with vieux rose ribbons. Miss Margaret carried a lovely bouquet of flowers and fern, while the two small bridesmaids carried shepherd's crooks. The best man was Mr James Iskirka (Joseph or??). The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Doherty. After the wedding a dainty breakfast was served at the residence of the bride's mother, where the health of the bride and bridegroom was honoured. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a gold necklet and cross; to each of the bridesmaids, gold brooches. The bride's present to the bridegroom was gold sleeve links. ... PETITIONS IN DIVORCE - Undefended petitions in divorce were taken at the Supreme Court before His Honor, Mr Justice Chapman, to-day.
MAX v MAX
- Francesca Marta Max (Mr Innes) sued for a divorce from John Max on the ground of desertion.
Petitioner gave evidence to the effect that she was married in September 1901. She had one child. They lived for a time in Taihape, and in March 1906, she came to Palmerston North for a holiday, at the request of her husband. her married life had not been a happy one up till then, She did not return to Taihape, as her husband came to Palmerston and said he had sold the home. She had on a number of occasions asked him to make another home, but he had not done so, She had not lived with him since march 1906. She had maintained herself during that time by doing washing.
Clara Iskirka said petitioner was her daughter. She corroborated the evidence given, and stated that since her daughter left Taihape she had stayed with her. To witness's knowledge he had not given her daughter any money since. A decree nisi was granted, to be made absolute in three months
ISKIRKA v ISKIRKA
- Clara Iskirka (Mr Cooper) sued for a divorce from John Iskirka on the grounds of desertion and drunkenness.
She was married at Foxton, she stated, in November 1876 and had nine children. Her husband left her in April 1906. He frequently got drunk.
Frank Iskirka, son of petitioner, also gave evidence as to his father's continual absence from home.
Owing to the fact of the ages of the children not being forthcoming, his Honor stated he could not grant a decree as the case stood. Leave would be given to amend the petition, however, and a decree nisi would be granted when affidavits were filed setting forth the ages of the children

WEDDING AT ST PAUL'S, WELLINGTON

Miss Florence Eglantine de Bathe BRANDON (1879-9 Dec 1938) was married to:
Dr Garnet Wilson HARTY (1879-23 Jan 1949), the Rev T. H. SPROTT officiating.

The bride, who was given away by Mr A. de B. BRANDON (her cousin, Alfred de Bathe Brandon, their fathers were brothers), wore a charming dress of white embroidered ninon over chiffon taffetas, the skirt panelled with exquisite Limerick lace, and sleeves of the same lace. From the shoulders hung a court train of white crepe de chine, and over the wreath of orange blossoms was worn a long Limerick lace veil.

The bridesmaids, Miss Gladys Knowles BRANDON, sister of the bride, and Miss Myra HARTY, cousin of the bridegroom (Myra Pearl Harty, daughter of Joseph Kew (1856-1934) & Annie Charlotte HARTY 1859-1938), wore very pretty empire frocks of mauve ninon over chiffon taffetas of the same shade, draped with white blonde lace, and mauve silk hats with mauve clematis flowers.

The bride carried a shower bouquet of white roses, double azaleas, cyclamens, and asparagus ferns and the bridesmaids carried bouquets of mauve cinerarias, and violets with asparagus and maidenhair ferns.

After the wedding, Mrs Robert Andrew LOUGHNAN (Victoire 'Victoria' Rose nee de Malmanche), from whose house the marriage took place, held a reception at her home in Tinakori Road, which was attended by a large number of guests. Quantities of flowers had been used in the decoration of the rooms, which looked very charming. The dining-room was done in red, with red chrysanthemums, sweet peas and autumn leaves and the mantelpiece was a mass of crimson flowers and foliage. The table was decorated with white snowdrops, abutillons and roses and the drawing-room with pale pink roses and chrysanthemums, autumn foliage and asparagus ferns most artistically arranged. Over the place where the bride and bridegroom stood to receive their friends hung a wedding bell of white camellias and roses.

* Mrs LOUGHNAN received in a handsome frock of mauve chiffon taffetas, with hat of the same shade trimmed with flowers and she carried a bouquet of cream roses and autumn leaves.

the OBITUARY of CHARLES MOORE IGGLESDEN

... Mr Charles Moore IGGLESDEN, who has lived in New Zealand since 1856, has died at Rawhiti-Terrace (Kelburn, Wellington), in his 88th year. Mr Igglesden was born in Bombay in June 1832, his father being at the time a commander in the Honourable East India Company's navy. He was articled in 1848 to Mr Robert MAINGAY, district engineer under BRUNEL, on the South Wales Railway at Narbeth, Pembrokeshire; and subsequently to Mr H. E. KENDALL, jun., architect and district surveyor for Hampstead and Highgate.

He left England in 1855 for New Zealand, and arrived in Wellington in 1856.

Mr Igglesden retired from the Public Service in the Survey Department. He held office for three years as Town Surveyor, Lyttelton; also as Resident Engineer at the same place under Mr E. DOBSON, Provincial Engineer, commenced the construction of the eastern breakwater, and was the first official to walk through the Moorhouse tunnel when the drives met.

He practised at various times, when not in the Government service, as architect, and the facade of the old Government Buildings in Wellington, now no longer in existence, was adopted from his design by Mr SINGLE, the architect employed, at the request of Mr Isaac Earl FEATHERSTON, Superintendent.
The old Custom House and Post Office, Wellington, besides other buildings, commercial and private, were carried out from his drawings.

Formerly an active and prominent Freemason, he was District Grand Secretary for the North Island, under District Grand Masters Sir Donald McLEAN and C. J. TOXWARD; and subsequently for a time District Grand Secretary for Wellington before the creation of the present Grand Lodge of New Zealand.

He served in the Wellington Rifle Volunteers, in the fifties, under Captain CARKEEK, during the Maori War at Taranaki; but the corps was never called upon to proceed to the scene of operation. He also received a commission as lieutenant in the N.Z. Militia (No. 1 Company, Wellington), from 2nd December 1868.

Mr Igglesden was married twice, his first wife being the daughter of the late Rev. C. H. S. NICHOLLS, and second the youngest daughter of the late Dr Joseph CURTIS, M.D., M.R.C.S., London.

He had been ill for some time, and death was not unexpected. He arrived in Wellington in 1858, and was well known to the older generations of citizens. Since his retirement from active life he had resided at Karori. Deceased was well known to bowlers, having been a member of the Wellington and Karori Bowling Clubs

Captain Patrick Kinloch Campbell (1894-1970), Black Watch, (A.D.C. to the late Major-General Sir Lee Stack) eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Patrick Campbell, of Christchurch (Patrick Campbell 1844-1916 & Emily 'Milly' Robinson (1857-1922), and Margaret Ethel Eliott Lockhart, youngest daughter of the late Colonel and Mrs R. D. Eliott-Lockhart (writes "The Post's" London correspondent).
The marriage took place from the residence of Captain and Mrs Ashton, who subsequently held a reception. Captain Ashton gave away the bride, who wore a dress of deep cream satin beaute, with a train of Carrickmacross lace, and a tulle veil held with a wreath of orange flowers and myrtle. Her bouquet was of white roses.
The bridesmaids - Misses Helen Stack and Anne Slessor - were in delphinium blue with hats to match. The best man was Mr Rowland Barnard.

An Anniversary Day Soliloquy (by N.J.B.)

Evening Post, 25 January 1919
... At high noon, or eventide, there clings to "God's Acre" in Sydney-street an attraction that surpasses that of all other places in this Empire City of ours. Although at our very doors, few find time to avail themselves of visiting this quiet place save those whose filial duty it is to occasionally pay a fitful homage to the grace of some otherwise long-forgotten relative whose headstone shows that at a distant period one lies there who helped to form the city's history. Surrounded by so much that shows civic advancement since their day, "The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep" within sight and sound of the Quay; yet few there are, seemingly, to do them the honour they so richly deserve

For myself I can always find solace in a visit to that restful spot where sleeps so many an early citizen; and I come away more satisfied with my lot and determined to do as they did; "leave the land better than they found it," and chance whatever falls between.

Good may be found in silent communion with the dead of a time wherein were written, in high honour, the noble traditions of the Homeland as handed down to us of the younger generation.

Removed, doubtless for safer keeping until is raised a more imposing monument in his illustrious memory, one will find, leaning and broken against the southern wall of the quaint mortuary chapel which is now seldom used, a headstone wherein one may learn more about the anniversary of Wellington than the books can tell us.
Hereon is written that beneath the stone rested one whose name should always be associated with that anniversary which Wellington finds so many ways of celebrating to its liking. To save fellow citizens the trouble of seeking it out themselves, word for word, all that is engraved upon a broken headstone is the story:-
Sacred to the Memory of
WILLIAM WAKEFILED
First Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company; Colonel of the First Regiment of Lancers, in the British Auxiliary Force of Spain; Knight of the Tower and Sword of Portugal; Knight of San Fernando; etc. etc.
Colonel Wakefield was the fourth son of Edward Wakefield, Esquire, of Burnham, in the County of Essex, in England.
In the year 1823 he acted as Secretary to the English Minister at Turin
In 1828 he travelled through Austria, Russia and Lapland
From 1832 to 1838 he served with distinction in the English Regiments of Lancers engaged in the Constitutional cause throughout the Civil Wars in Portugal and Spain
In 1839 he led the first body of English Colonists to the shores of New Zealand
From this period, unto his death, Colonel Wakefield conducted the affairs of the New Zealand Company throughout their difficult and varying relations with the Government, the Settlers and the Natives, with eminent temper, moderation and prudence; with great sagacity, judgment and ability.
In private life he was esteemed for urbanity of manners and kindliness of disposition. He was hospitable, liberal and unassuming. His hand was ever open to assist the poorer Colonists; in the evil days of the infancy of the settlement; generously, but judiciously; without ostentation, as without indifference.
He died at Wellington on the 19th of September 1848, in the 48th year of his age; and was followed to the grave by a large body of the Settlers and of Natives from all the surrounding districts. Whatever mound, hereabouts, is sacred to the memory of so distinguished a solder, statesman and coloniser, must be left to a future monument to mark.
NOTE William Wakefield (1801-1848), brother of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, was one of the founders of Wellington. In 1826, he married Emily Sidney, a daughter of Sir John Sidney but the year prior, after becoming betrothed to Emily, and before they could be married, Wakefield became involved with his brother in the abduction of a wealthy heiress and both brothers were arrested. Then, while out on bail, Wakefield absconded to Paris, apparently to meet up with Emily who by now was three months pregnant ... (good story)

Meanwhile, there are many persons of humbler renown whose headstones bear ample testimony to the spot whereunto kindly hands have borne them

In like manner and doubtless for a similar reason, have been removed to the mortuary chapel several other headstone, including that of

"Much loved and deeply mourned"
Lieut. R.N. (second son of Major William Eliott-Lockhart, Madras Army), who died from exposure near Mataikuna (Mataikona, near Castlepoint), 4th September 1871; aged 30 (BDM has aged 27)
Evening Post, 15 September 1871 The Wairarapa Mercury gives fuller particulars of the death from exhaustion of Mr G. Eliott-Lockhart than published here before. It says:- On Friday last the body of a man who was identified as G. Eliott-Lockhart, was found by Mr McLean, the overseer of the Mataikuna station, about 300 yards from the old ford of the river. From the information we have received, it appears that the deceased, who was an officer of her Majesty's Navy on half-pay, and very well conducted, left Castle Point in the Glimpse on 20th August, and sent to Flat Point where he landed and rode to Castle Point. He then proceeded, on Tuesday, on his way on foot to the Mataikuna station, carrying with him a few articles for Mr McLean. He was seen on the following day by some Maori who were looking for their horses and on Friday he was found dead, lying on his back with his satchel as a pillow. Two cheques of ?2 and ?1 respectively, with 12s in silver, were found on him. R. Maunsell, Esq., J.P., went on Saturday, to hold an inquest upon the body, the result of which we have not yet learnt. The weather was very bad on the coast at the time, snowing and raining alternately and there is but little doubt that he died from sheer exhaustion

A Royal Marine, who fell whilst gallantly engaged in the attack on the Rebel Chief Kawhiti, at Ruapekapera Pah, on the 11th of January 1846

Also that erected by Lieut. Page and surviving comrades of the 58th Regiment to the memory of SERGEANT INGRAM (Lance-Sergeant Edward Ingram) and other Regimental Comrades, who fell on the morning of the 16th of May 1846, whilst gallantly defending their post, at the Hutt, against a desperate attack made on it by the Rebel Natives
NOTE the major attack on a defended position, Boulcott's Farm

Then there is that erected by members of His Majesty's ship Calliope to the memory of several comrades in 1846-7 who were fated to leave their bones to moulder in the only burial ground Wellington knew in days far back, when Karori was a bush-clad wilderness (*see photo)

All interested in seeing ample memorial justice done to the memory of those who fell in battle in the great war of 1914-18 should surely draw the attention of the authorities to the fact that such old-time worthies are equally deserving of a more fitting and permanent memorial than within a place to which so few have entry

Among the sad and yet beautiful tributes to the memory of childhood, is that of a stately monument whose mute appeal is made unto the East, from whence came those beautiful passages of Scripture, "Suffer the little children," etc.; and "In thy Father's House are many mansions; if it were not so I would habe told you. I so to prepare a place for you."

Who can read unmoved, the story of three little boys stricken down by an epidemic and stand tearless and read:
Thou that art gathering from they children's smiles
Thy thousand hopes; rejoicing to behold
All the heart's depths before thee bright with truth
All the young mind's treasures silently unfold
Look on this tomb! For thee, too, speaks the grave
Where God has sealed the fount of love he gave

Then there is the story of an even remoter household catastrophe wherein, so far back as October 1855, was lost to a Colonel Gold of the 65th Regiment, and his beloved wife, two little girls whose memory is recorded in simpler fashion; visualising the words of Longfellow:-
There is a Reaper whose name is Death
And with his sickle keen
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath
And the flowers that grow between
NOTE these were 2 of the 15 children of Charles Emilius Gold 1809-1871), later General Gold, & his wife Eleanor Felicia Askin Geddes Charles was also an artist

Then, time permitting, gaze upon a small green mound above which, in the leafy boughs near-by, sings the thrush, then a new bird in a strange land. Here was laid to rest with gentle care a little maid of five whose mother - as she folded those fragile arms of her dead darling across the cold breast as if in prayer - so long ago as "sixty-five" doubtless counted the long years between the Then and Now of a meeting in Paradise. How many sympathisers she will have among present-day mothers similarly plunged into deep sorrow at the loss of dear ones, both on land and sea, as a result of war and a visitation of sickness such as we have never known before!

Those who are content to sit in solitude and gaze out upon the placid waters of Port Nicholson may hereabouts seat themselves before the memorial to a citizen of past good report, and meditate upon the panoramic beauty of the distant Rimutakas - snow-capped for most parts of the year - speculating as to why the not far-distant Petone foreshore was forsaken by the early immigrants - after naming it "Britannia" - and the wind-swept Thorndon-esplanade (the Pipitea Point) chosen in its stead.
Rides at anchor in the roadstead a ship of stout timbers, equal to any which traversed the ocean in the "forties" awaiting wind and tide, of which bygone skippers and crews knew so well how to make use when 'outward bound'

The last remembrance of all is the moss-grown mausoleum of one who had not reached middle life, daughter of a Captain of the 11th Regiment and wife of a Surgeon of the 65th; whose manly grief even the moss-grown tomb bears mute testimony to in words of his own choosing:
"The loving and devoted wife" etc,; recalling to mind the poem of Meng Hao-jan (written A.D. 689-740) from "A Lute of Jade":-

I open wide my casement
To breathe the rain-cooled air,
And mingle with the moonlight
The dark waves of my hair

I fain would take the zither,
By some stray fancy led;
But there are none to hear me,
And who can charm the dead?

So all my day-dreams follow
The bird that leaves the nest;
And in the night I gather
The lost one to my breast

Behind, one clatters the gate of this beautiful "garden of sleep" as though warning "a friend" that harshness of city sounds and clanging of tramway bells and the roar of traffic generally lie at the foot of Mee's Steps, Lambton-quay, for him who can desert so safe a retreat from the perils of 'hustling' Time

FAHEY - The late Miss Catherine Fahey (Pearl), eldest daughter of Mr. John Fahey, South Fremantle, died on the 11th inst., at her father's residence, High-street, Fremantle. The deceased was a pupil of St. Joseph's Convent School, Fremantle, and all her school "mates" - about 200 girls, dressed in white - attended the funeral. The lengthy cortege, headed by the deceased's school mates, afforded a very touching sight as it wended its way to St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Adelaide-street, where the Rev. Father W. J. McCallion, O.M.L., officiated, and thence to the place of interment, the Roman Catholic portion of the Fremantle Cemetery.
The chief mourners were:
* Mr. John Fahey (father), Mrs. Fahey (mother), Nellie and Mona Fahey (sisters), Tom and Jack Fahey (brothers), Mrs. D. Williams (aunt), Mr. D. Williams (uncle), and Miss M. Torpy (cousin).

* Maude Nicholson Berna Metcalfe, Fanny Parsons, Molly Cridleon, Dolly McCorry, and Kathleen Hurley.
Many handsome wreaths, floral tributes, letters, and telegrams expressing sympathy were received by the parents. The Rev Father W. J. McCallion, O.M.I., also officiated at the grave.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Arthur E. Davies and Co., Fremantle

Mr FAHEY was born in Macarthur, Vic. He leaves a Sister & 2 Brothers in that State. (Vic). He came to WA 36 years ago & for the last 26 years had Resided at Midland Junction, in which town he was well liked for his genial Personality & Sportsman like character. At one time an enthusiastic Cricketer, of late years he has devoted his time to Bowls & was a very popular & well Respected Member of the Midland Bowling Club. He leaves a wife, 6 Sons, 2 daughters & 2 grandchildren to mourn their loss.

* JOHN Fahey Catholic Priest
born: 3 Oct 1883, Glenough, Tipperary, Ireland, to Michael FAHEY, farmer, & Catherine RYAN. Educated by the Cistercians at Mount Melleray and at the Brignole Sale Seminary, Genoa, Italy, he was ordained priest in May 1907. Leaving almost immediately for the Australian mission he worked briefly in Perth at the cathedral and was then appointed to the parish of York and of Yarloop-Pinjarra in the south-east. Fahey was a manly type of priest well suited to the timber workers he served. He was an excellent sportsman, a fine shot and lived a rough unconventional life. Bush experience provided him with an excellent preparation for the Australian Imperial Force which he joined on 8 September 1914 as a chaplain, 4th class (captain). He enlisted from Perth, listing Laurel O'Neill as his next of kin. Francis was killed in a Flying Accident 6 Jan 1944 aged 31 (also killed was his Flight-Lieutenant, Stanley Charles HICKS). Francis was flying a de Havilland Mosquito, FB.Mk.IV which crashed close to Bourn airfield soon after take-off from Oakington, Cambridgeshire, where the squadron was based. .........OBITUARY
FAHEY - An old and respected citizen of Fremantle, Mr. John Fahey, of 36 Hampton-road, Fremantle, and of Charlie Carter Ltd., Fremantle, died on Saturday last. A Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church, Adelaide-street, Fremantle, yesterday morning, at which the Rev. Father M. Moore, O.M.I., was the celebrant. The remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Fremantle Cemetery in the afternoon. The Rev. Father H. Kearin conducted the service at the graveside. Mr. Fahey was born at Bundanoon, New South Wales, and came to Western Australia 40 years ago. In 1902 he opened the business of Fahey and Hutchinson, grocers, South Fremantle. The partnership continued for about 6 years and he afterwards carried on his own account until he sold the business about 13 years ago. He soon afterwards joined the service of Charlie Carter Ltd., Fremantle, and remained there until his death. His wife predeceased him 7 years ago. He leaves three sons, two daughters and six grandchildren to mourn their loss.
The chief mourners were: Messrs. T. and F. Fahey (sons), Mesdames P. Caplice (Monica Mary 'Mona' Fahey who married Patrick Lawrence Caplice, 7 May 1924 in Guildford) and R. Mulligan (daughters), Messrs. T. and D. Williams (nephews) and Miss P. Williams (niece).
