... ESTATE OF A. J. JACOBS - The first meeting in the estate of A. J. Jacobs was held to-day, the Deputy Official Assignee (Mr W. B. Chennells) presiding. There were no creditors present.
The debtor, in a written statement, said that on account of being threatened with a distress warrant, and having been sued by several other creditors, and in the face of scarcity of employment, he was unable to pay back debts, and felt compelled to file.
Examined on oath by the D.O.A., debtor said he had been in Masterton about four years. At the time he came here he owed about ten pounds in Carterton, a small portion of which he believed had been paid. In Masterton, he had followed the business of a taxidermist, filling up spare time in painting and paperhanging, but had not been employed half his time. The debts incurred were principally for living expenses. His wife had kept a Registry Office since they came to Masterton, but made nothing out of it. She had no property, the fowls she had were purchased with her own money. He had no stock of stuffed birds of his own at present. He had tried to arrange the debt owing to C. Hughes, for which the latter had promised to give him work to do. He had not kept any account of what money he had earned in Masterton. He had not tried to make any arrangement with his creditors. They were round him like a pack of wolves, and the money he used to file would not have satisfied one tenth of the debts. About eighteen months ago he went to Wellington, and took a shop in which to carry on the taxidermist business, but had bad luck - through sickness in his family - and the venture did not pay. He had nine children. He had no offer to make to his creditors. He became bankrupt about nine years ago in the South island for about the same amount as he now owed

... MASTERTON THIS DAY - A. J. Jacobs, taxidermist, was fined ?5 and costs to-day for killing seven huias and a native pigeon in the Puketoi country
Evening Post, 2 April 1896
... A. J. Jacobs, the well-known Naturalist, is now in Wellington for the convenience of gentlemen who require stags' heads properly mounted at a reasonable charge; highest reference to show first-class workmanship; sample of work to be seen at Dresden Piano Company where orders can be left and to be seen personally 27 Cambridge House, Taranaki-street, Wellington and Mrs Jacobs, Masterton
Press, 9 May 1896
... The other day Henry H. Travers, of Paraparaumu, was charged with having counselled and procured A. J. Jacobs to kill seven huias and one native pigeon. Mr Jacobs was a taxidermist at Masterton and some time last year was fined for having killed the abovementioned Native game. It was then alleged that Mr Jacobs was counselled by H. H. Travers, of Paraparaumu, to procure and kill the birds, for which offence the present proceedings were taken. Mr W. T. L. Travers appeared for the defence and raised several law points, which were overruled by Mr Greenfield, S.M. The defendant was fined ?5 with ?2 11s costs

... A meeting of creditors in the estate of Adnett John Jacobs, paperhanger, was held at the office of the Official Assignee to-day. The bankrupt, examined on oath, stated that the most he had earned was ?2 15s a week (2012 equivalent of $353), and during the year he had, in lost time, lost between two and three months' wages. He had a wife and eleven children dependent on him. Two of his family were out at work, but he received nothing from them. One son out of the eleven earned 12s a weeks, but the others earned nothing. He paid 27s 6d a week rent and about ?9 was now owing on that account. Mrs Jacobs for several years had conducted a registry office and carried on the business of a taxidermist. After further evidence the meeting adjourned till Saturday morning in order to call Mrs Jacobs as a witness

IN GREYTOWN
... The leases for twelve months from 1st March next of the various toll-bars on the Wairarapa Road, were sold by auction today by mr J. H. Wallace on behalf of the Provincial Government. There was a large attendance of purchasers, and the bidding was brisk.
* The first lot was the Kaiwarra Toll Gate. Last year this gate was let for ?2,250, but an idea seemed to exist that its receipts during the coming year would be considerably decreased owing the railway. It was started at ?2,000 and ran up to ?2,100, at which price it was knocked down to the present lessee, Mr C. Thompson
* The next lot was the Hutt Bridge Gate, which last year sold at ?1,350, but in respect of which the lessee, Mr D. Everest, petitioned the Council for compensation for the losses sustained through a reduction in the rate of tolls. This gate was started at ?1,000 and ran up to ?1,370, at which price the present lessee, Mr Everest, was declared the purchaser. Notwithstanding his alleged losses last year, he has sufficient faith in his pike to induce him to give an additional ?20 for it this year
* The Featherson Toll Gate was the next one put up. It had never before been sold, the Government having kept it themselves since its erection. Its first receipts for the year were stated to be ?565. Started at ?450, the bidding quickly ran up until Mr W. Welch became the purchaser at ?660.
* The WAIOHINE BRIDGE GATE, near Greytown, never before let, was stated to have realised ?692 15s 9d during the year. The bidding, commenced at ?500, and Mr H. LEPPIEN was declared the purchaser at ?700 (2013 equivalent of $86,550)

... CORRESPONDENCE to the TARATAHI-CARTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD - From the German Consol on behalf of Mrs Leppien as toll gate lessee, also Messrs Haigh and Wood offering to be sureties - The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge receipt and state the board would accept ?50 for the toll-gate until the railway was opened to Carterton
Wairarapa Daily Times, 15 July 1880
... We hear on good authority that Mrs Leppien, of the Waiohine toll gate, is anxious to be relieved of her trust, and has so signified her intention to Government. We are informed that in terms of agreement she would relinquish the tollgate on the opening of the railway to Carterton, and practically this is now the case, as loads of timber, oats, etc., have been sent from Carterton lately
Wairarapa Daily Times, 25 February 1881
... A letter was read from the Wairarapa West County Council requesting the Board to set aside a portion of the tolls from the Waiohine toll gate for the maintenance of the present and the building of another bridge. Instructions to the clerk to write to Mrs Leppien that her services would be dispensed with as toll-keeper at the Black Bridge after the 31st proximo, as the Board intended to abolish the toll
FREDERICKA Leppien remarried in Carterton to ROBERT ROBINSON (1856-1947) on 25 March 1881 and moved to Stratford, Taranaki.
Wairarapa Daily Times, 4 October 1881
... The Clerk (of the Featherston Highway Board) produced a deed of lease from the Board to Robert Robinson jun., re the Waiohine toll-gate. The lease was agreed to and it was resolved that Messrs Tully and Jackson be empowered to affix the seal of the Board thereto, which was accordingly done
Wairarapa Daily Times, Volume 4, Issue 1097, 12 June 1882
... THE WAIOHINE TOLL - Mr Robinson, lessee of the toll, applied for a remission of two months rent (L52) on the ground that his takings for that period (L18) had been reduced by non-completion of bridge to contract time, and by the toll being evaded at the old Maori ford - The Chairman thought it would have strengthened Mr Robinson's position if he had first paid his rent - Cr McGregor thought the request made a reasonable one, and suggested an amicable arrangement - Cr Braithwaite moved that rent to the amount of L25 be remitted. A great deal of toll money had been evaded at the upper ford. In one instance a thousand sheep had been crossed there. Cr Matthews seconded the proposal for a remission of L25. Cr Donald said they had been in a false position with the toll. They had endeavoured to protect Mr Robinson but had been unable to do so. He supported the motion. Cr McGregor moved as an amendment that the amount to be remitted be L20, which he thought would be an equitable arrangement. Cr Macquarrie inquired if the bridge was now open for light traffic, and was informed that it was available for both light and heavy vehicles. The Chairman, while supporting a concession in rent, pointed out that Mr Robinson was not only in arrear for the two months rent, but had not paid for the month due on his new lease. It would not do to ignore the conditions under which the toll was let, and if Mr Robinson could not comply with them the gate must go to the next tenderer. Cr Donald concurred in thei view and the motion for remitting L25 was carried conditionally on Mr Robinson paying up arrears of rent within seven days. Cr Braithwaite asked if the toll-house would be at once moved to the north end of the bridge, and the Chairman replied that it would. Mr Robinson, who was present, complained of traffic going over the Mungatarere bridge. The Chairman said he had endeavoured to see Mr J. Ingley re the erection of a fence which would stop this. He thought the discussion of the matter had better stand over till he had seen Mr Ingley
Wairarapa Daily Times, 9 May 1885
... The tender of R. Robinson, junior, for the lease of the Waiohine toll, at ?412 was accepted. Moved by Cr H. Braithwaite and seconded by Cr H. R. Bunny, that as the rents are received from the toll gate the same be paid over to the Road Boards. A letter was read from Cr C. Phillips, asking the Council to postpone the reletting of the toll gate for three or four months, and at the same time the present toll-gate keeper collect tolls on behalf of the Council and also to make a further request to the different local bodies to assist in abolishing the debt. Cr Braithwaite's motion was carried with a slight amendment. A long discussion then arose as to ways nd means and Cr H. Bunny expressed himself very strongly on the matter, and said that if there was not anything done at the next meeting of Parliament he should use his utmost endeavours to get the County system abolished as far as the West County is concerned

passengers per AFRICAN - Auckland 28 Jan 1860
A passenger list for the African could not be found online. The following was taken from the Daily Southern Cross, 31 January 1860 and the names are spelled as written, although may not be accurate
the AFRICAN, 774 tons, Captain Joseph Gibson, owner, left London 7 October 1859 & left Plymouth on 11 October 1859. It arrived into Auckland on 28 January 1860
--- Cruickshank, Smart & Co., agents
The African was signalled yesterday morning shortly after day break and dropped anchor in the harbour about 9 a.m. She left London on the 7th October, and after a most agreeable run down Channel, put into Plymouth on the morning of the 10th, from which port she again sailed at midnight on the 11th. She experienced very heavy breezes from the S. and S.W., while off the coast of Portugal; sighted the Burling rocks in the vicinity of Lisbon on the 21st, just 10 days out; passed inside Palma, one of the Canary islands, on the 27th, the wind being westerly; caught a light N.E. trade, which she carried to 7? N. Crossed the line on the 20th November, light variable winds prevailing for several days. In about 3? N. was favoured with a light S. wind, which however, soon parted company. Passed to the leeward of the Island of Trinidad, making the meridian of the Cape on the 17th December, in 47?. Ran down her easting to 48? 30'; sighting Price Edward's Island; and passing to the N. of Kerguelen's Land, for 10 days laid off and on in consequence of adverse winds from the E., accompanied by thick heavy weather; passed no less than seven whalers, among which was the lady Emma, of Hobart Town. From this had a fair run to Van Diemen's land, which she passed on the 19th inst. On the 26th, when in lat. 34?, long. 167?, encountered a circular storm, wind coming E.NE., shifting to N.W. and W., and moderating on the 27th. Sighted the Three Kings at half past 4 a.m. on Saturday last. At 3p.m. rounded the North Cape, strong Southerly winds prevailing as far as the Poor Knights, when they became light and variable; rounded to under the lee of the Little Barrier at midnight, and at 4 a.m. yesterday, made sail for the harbour, which she reached at 8.30 a.m., 100 days from Plymouth. Captain Gibson has visited this colony on several occasions, and in the London took some of the first settlers, which were sent out under the auspices of the New Zealand Company. He has also visited Canterbury, and took home the first entire cargo of Wool from that settlement in the Midlothian. He reports 3 births and 2 deaths during the voyage, one an adult, the other a child, who embarked in a very sickly condition. The African brings an addition of 125 passengers to our population, and comes into harbour in first-rate order

Evening Post, 1 February 1938 The death of Mr Bernard Gallagher, which occurred on Sunday, removes another of the prominent members of the school of old sportsmen of Wellington. Educated at St Patrick's College, the late Mr Gallagher played football for the college before joining the Wellington Football Club in 1894, in which year he was a member of the team which won the junior championship. His ability and promise won him a place in the club's senior team until 1902. He was a powerful, fast forward, and played conspicuously as a Wellington representative from 1895 to 1902, making nearly 40 appearances as a representative. He was a member of the famous Wellington team which toured south in 1897, and was regarded by southern critics as about the best of the forwards. He was also in the Wellington Club's team when it won the senior championship in 1901. He served in the Post and Telegraph Department for some 35 years, being stationed in Wellington, and also having part of his long service in Nelson. He had been living in Wellington since his retirement.
The late Mr Gallagher, who was 63 years of age, was a son of the late Mr and Mrs James Gallagher, of Wellington, and a nephew of the late Mr Tim O'Connor, who was a noted Auckland athlete in the early days. He leaves a widow and a daughter. Sisters of the late Mr Gallagher are Mesdames H. F. O'Leary (Wellington), Griffen (Greymouth), M. Gleeson (Napier) and O'Halloran. The late Mrs Fay, of Wellington, was another sister. The funeral took place today, and the Wellington Football Club was represented by Mr J. Thompson (president) and J. Murray (vice-president), the Wellington Rugby Union being represented by Mr J. Prendeville (president)

... The death occurred at the Wellington Home of Compassion to-day of Sister Mary Carmel (Gallagher), aged 72 years. She had been at the Wellington Home of Compassion since it was opened 25 years ago. Sister Mary Carmel was one of the late Mother Mary Aubert's original companions in her charitable work at Jerusalem on the Wanganui River. She joined Mother Mary Aubert 48 years ago, taking three days to travel up the Wanganui River to the tiny village which later was to become so famous. While at Jerusalem, Sister Mary Carmel, who became a fluent speaker of Maori, endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact, Europeans and Maori alike. She remained in the Wanganui district until 1907, when she came to Wellington for the opening of the Home of Compassion. Quiet of manner, Sister Mary Carmel was a woman of saintly disposition and was extremely gifted. Her good works in connection with the Home of Compassion will be long remembered. Sister mary Carmel was born in County Donegal, Ireland. She has no surviving relatives in New Zealand

National Union Club Dance - Wellington 1936
Evening Post, 17 February 1936
... the NATIONAL UNION, which is comprised of a large number of young people, who, it will be remembered, held many very bright, and often quite original dinners, dances and the dansants last year, commenced their 1926 season of gaieties very informally on Saturday night with a flannel dance.
Their activities were to have begun a fortnight previously, but on account of the King's death the party was postponed.
Their headquarters, the National Club in Featherston Street, looked as attractive as usual on Saturday night with flowers and shaded lights in the lounges and Chinese lanterns hanging in the dance room. Ices and cool drinks were served in between dances, and there was an excellent supper.

Manawatu Standard, 4 August 1904 GUN ACCIDENT A shocking accident occurred to a young man named Louis Klee last Friday while out pig-hunting on the Akitio run (East Coast). According to the Dannevirke Advocate, Klee (who is employed as a rabbiter by Mr Armstrong) and another young man, were out getting some meat for the dogs. They were on a rough part of the run and were walking up a fairly steep hill. Klee was in the lead and just as they arrived at the top the man who was behind slipped and fell, the gun discharging at the same time. Klee got the contents in the calf of his right leg, making a fearful wound, a hole about six inches long being made where the charge came out. Assistance was obtained, and the wounded man was conveyed to Mr Armstrong's station. By the time the stretcher-bearers arrived at the station, the poor fellow was weak from the loss of blood and exposure, as it was a very cold evening, and being nearly ten hours from the time of the accident until arrival at the homestead. Mr and Mrs Armstrong and others did everything possible in the way of care and attention, but on examination, Dr Riddell found the small bone of the leg was shattered beyond repair, so Dr Godfrey, of Waipukurau, was telephoned for, and on his arrival on Saturday evening the leg was amputated just below the knee. He is now doing as well as possible under the circumstances. The deepest sympathy is felt for Klee by whomsoever he was known. He served a campaign in South Africa with the seventh Contingent, and returned without a wound, and then to lose a leg in such a way seems hard
