Masterton's first Church of England was built on the corner of Queen & Church Streets. The first wooden church was replaced by a brick one built on the northern side of Church Street - between Dixon & Archer Sts - and consecrated on 22 Sep 1913. This church was damaged in the 1942 earthquake and demolished. The third church was opened on the site of the second church in 1958. In the early 1990s St Matthew's Church was divided over theological matters, resulting in the resignation of the vicar, Barrie Allom

Arthur William Burrell & Mary Myrtle Holley, Westport NZ
Written for TamaraLee who messaged on 25 Oct 2017...
Hello Ngaire, I was wondering if you would be able to please help me with something.
I have being trying to find a photo of my nana, Mavis Eveline (nee Burrell) for over 25 years now. Our family has no photo of her as a young person before she married granddad Gordon McDonald McRae. Nana and Granddad eloped (I think) and I don't even know if there is a wedding photo of them. We would all love to see what Nana looked liked before her marriage. Apparently she was Miss Westport at some stage - I'm thinking between 1937 and 1940. Can you please help me I would be ever so grateful and appreciative
* If anyone recognises the people in this journal could you please leave a comment which may help Tamara

In June 1913 he was one the pioneers who remembered the "Roaring '60s" at the West Coast Goldfield Jubilee (a good read at that link as it lists many of the people he would have known and been friends with and tells a story of what life was like on the Coast in his day).
* James Burrell died in Nelson in 1914

* In Feb 1879 Mr F. Cooper of Wellington, who bought the wreck of the 'City of Auckland,' sold it to Bowe & Birchley, keeping for himself the steering wheel, binnacle, compasses and one bower anchor and chain
* In 1879 he was a Stock Dealer in Palmerston North, in partnership with Thomas Bowe in the firm Bowe, Birchley & Co., until he bought out Thomas's share of the business and ran it with Pat Mangan

* In 1903 he purchased a farm in Taihape and sold his 13 acre property, with 6-roomed house, stables, barns, cowshed etc in Hokowhitu. This went up for auction but was passed in at £1000. It was later purchased by Mr F. Tyer of Palmerston North
* In 1903 his son 'Sid' was charged in connection with an accident on the River bank in which Miss Elizabeth Baker was seriously injured. It was a long, drawn-out trial and because of constant jury disagreement, a new trial began in Sep 1903. Again the jury disagreed and the Crown finally abandoned the case
* In Dec 1903 Joseph put up for sale his well-known property at Hokowhitu, 15 miles from Pohangina & 10 miles from Apiti, consisting of 13 acres with a comfortable dwelling

* In Dec 1917 his son Corporal Malcolm Sydney 'Sid' Birchley, horsebreaker with the Wellington Mounted Rifles, returned to Palmerston North after fighting on the Peninsula. He was the first to offer his services when war broke out & travelled on the transport with 700 horses. He was wounded at Gallipoli. He also took part in the Boer War
Of interest, Joseph bought the gigantic, historic shipwreck 'Hydrabad'
In 1878 the 224-feet long iron-hulled vessel crashed into the coastline 1km south of the tiny Waitarere Beach community in what the papers of the time described as "a furious hurricane". None of the 35 people on board were killed, but the 1350-tonne vessel could not be refloated. Ravaged by fires and rust, she sat in shallow waters out from Waitarere Beach and became a local icon.
Joseph bought the hulk and all the gear etc in 1881 for £5 (equivalent today of $842) when it came ashore at Otaki. He sold a portable engine, a steam winch, a donkey pump, 4 large iron tanks, 2 large cooking ranges (1 suitable for cooking for 60 people) and about 1 ton of old brass and muntz metal. He offered to sell a boiler and steam winch to the Waitara Harbour Board. The 6ft figure head and several of her seats were at one time at his residence, The Avenue, Foxton.
* He served on the jury at inquests
* He had thoroughbred horses and polo ponies. His son Maurice rode a number of the winners. When he was 11 years old he came off his mount 'Black Watch' at the 3rd hurdle but got straight back on and completed his round

Auckland Star, 4 May 1921
INQUIRY BEGINS The Royal Commission appointed to inquire into the Thompson-Hotop court-martial case continued its inquiry today. Private Thompson suffered imprisonment as the result of charges made by him against Hotop, to the effect that the latter was drunk when on duty as a medical officer at Featherston camp. Counsel for Thompson alleged that the charges were brought to shield Hotop. He contended that Thompson was wrongfully detained and that the charges were not proved. Evidence was called to show that Hotop had been habitually under the influence of drink in camp and that one night he was in a state of helpless drunkenness. Thompson gave evidence that Hotop's demeanour was peculiar when examining witness. For proof of his allegations witness named informants who had said that Hotop being drunk in uniform was a matter of common comment.

Henry died 15 days after Ada
Cromwell Argus, 16 June 1930
OBITUARY The death on Tuesday evening last of Mr Henry Hotop was surrounded with more than the usual degree of sadness, marking, as it did, a double bereavement suffered by one of our best known local families in the course of a fortnight. The death of Mrs Hotop occurred just 15 days previously. This, to the bereaved husband at the age of 74 years, came as a deep shock, but the set-back was not such as to cause serious anxiety regarding his state of health. A sudden change on Tuesday afternoon, however, hastened the end, and he passed away quietly. I For just over half-a-century the late Mr Hotop has been closely associated with the life and progress of the town. Born in 1856, he was educated at Coburg, but in his early manhood made for the colonies and landed in Melbourne in 1874. Shortly after he came over to Otago and settled at Clyde, where he founded a business which he conducted for four years. In 1879, he removed to Cromwell, taking up the business of chemist, which he successfully conducted right up to the present time. During his long residence here, he was closely associated with many local bodies. For a number of years he was a member of the Cromwell Borough Council, and following this was for two and half years town clerk. He was chairman of the Cromwell Hospital committee for several years, and also for a long time a leading light and chairman of the local school committee, in fact one of the leading advocates of education. He was a loyal supporter of St. Andrews Church, and Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. Mining ventures also had attractions for him. and he was at different periods associated with many ventures in various parts of the district. Likewise he was generous to any deserving local cause or object. In all respects the late Mr Hotop was of a candid and kindly disposition, a keen critic with original ideas on local affairs. During his residence of half a century he made many friends, by whom he was held in high esteem, and by whom news of his somewhat sudden death was received with deep regret. The surviving family, left to mourn the loss of both father and mother in such a short interval, comprises five daughters and three sons, and to these the deepest sympathy of all is extended in their sad loss. The funeral took place in the New Cemetery on Thursday morning, Rev. A. B. Pywell officiating at the grave in the presence of friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect. Members of the Oddfellows Lodge, M.U.I.O.O.F, were present as a body, the deceased having carried out the duties of Lodge chemist for many years

DEATH HOTOP - On Monday 15th instant, at her residence, Katherine Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Lewis Hotop, Queenstown, aged 48 years
* She is buried in Queenstown
Lake Wakatip Mail, 9 April 1907
Presentation to Mr L. Hotop A very pleasing ceremony took place in St Peter's Sunday School last Wednesday when a number of the members of the congregation of St Peter's met together to formally say good-bye to Mr L. Hotop and to present him with a memento in recognition of his long and faithful services as vestryman, churchwarden and lay reader.
The vicar, the Rev R. T. Mathews, in speaking on behalf of the congregation, referred to Mr Hotop's 40 years of service in the work of the church and spoke of the much good advice that had been gained through his long experience. He had found, on looking through old records, that Mr Hotop was an officer of the church in 1886 and his name figured in the books then as lay-reader, although not so frequently as at the present time .. OBITUARY The death occurred at Dunedin on Friday last of Mr Lewis Hotop, one of the earliest residents of Queenstown, where he carried on business as a chemist for upwards of 50 years. A native of Germany, Mr Hotop was born at Saafeld, Thuringen, where he received his education at the public gymnasium or high school. After being at sea for about four years, he went to Queenstown in 1867 and entered the employ of Messrs Hallenstein and Co. He eventually established himself in the shop which contained an assortment of goods apart from things chemical and was well known to holiday-makers at the favourite resort. One of deceased's favourite hobbies - indeed, the predominant one - was tree planting and to his enthusiasm and energy is die in no small measure the arboreal attractiveness of Queenstown. He also associated himself closely with local public politics and was twice Mayor of the borough as well as serving on the council for a number of years. Matters connected with the Anglican Church found a sympathetic follower in Mr Hotop, who was a vestryman of the Church until his departure from Queenstown, in June last. Mr Hotop had taken four trips Home during his stay in Queenstown and, accompanied by a daughter, he was visiting the South Sea Islands when he took ill at Suva a fortnight ago returning in a state of health which ended in his death (reports the Dunedin Times). He had, however, been in failing health for some time prior to his trip to the South Sea Islands. Mr Hotop was predeceased by his wife some 20 years ago. He is survived by two daughters and two sons, one of the latter being Dr Frank Hotop of Dunedin.

DART-DICKER Another gay function of a matrimonial character was celebrated at Wynyard on Tuesday afternoon, the contracting parties being Mr William Dart, eldest son of the late Mr Wm. Dart, of Wynyard, and Miss Emma Dicker, eldest daughter of Mr. Jas. Dicker, also of Wynyard. The marriage was performed by the Rev. W. Hamilton, assisted by Mr. W. H. Pollard, in the Methodist Church. The church was very tastefully decorated for the auspicious event, and looked very nice. The bride wore a handsome fawn cashmere dress trimmed with white silk and gimp, with veil and orange blossoms, and looked exceedingly pretty. She was attended by the Misses Ada Dicker and Alice Dart, young sisters of the bride and bridegroom, as bridesmaids, the two latter wearing white hail spot muslin over pink zephyr, with short voile trimmed with flowers. They also looked very comely In their fairy-like costumes, Mr R. Dart acted as best man and the bride was given away by her father. The church was crowded during the ceremony, a large number being unable to obtain admission. After the ceremony a large number assembled at Mr Dicker's residence, where the usual wedding festivities were indulged in and breakfast partaken of. The customary wedding toasts were received with great applause, and honored with the heartiest wishes of all present. The wedding presents were very numerous, and embraced the useful with the beautiful. A large number of the presents were from South Australia, where the bride and her husband in their early years resided. The teachers and scholars of the Methodist Sunday school presented the bride with a handsome tall metal lamp and butter dish and sugar bowl as a mark of their love for one who has for many years been connected with the school as organist and teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Dart have gone to Launceston, where they intend to spend the honeymoon. As usual, rice, rose leaves, and flowers were scattered with prodigality upon the happy pair.

Chronicle, 12 November 1898 ~ DEATH
The Emu Bay (Tasmania) 'Times' in its issue of last week had the following letter, dated October 28, from its Wynyard correspondent:—
'Quite a gloom was cast over the township this morning when it became known that an accident, which terminated fatally, had befallen George Dicker. Deceased was engageed with his brother William scrubbing at Camp Creek. William was felling a myrtle tree, George was working about 20 to 30 yards away, and was warned of the falling tree and jumped behind another close by. It is supposed that he looked out to see where the tree was falling to and was struck on the head by it. Deceased never spoke and died an hour afterwards. Deceased who was only married about last Christmas, leaves a young wife, for whom heartfelt sympathy is expressed.' At the inquest the jury returned a verdict that deceased came to his death accidentally. The deceased was a son of Mr James Dicker, an old resident of Modbury, but now of Wynyard, and about 10 months ago he married Miss M. Dart, of Millbrook.
* 11 Nov 1898 - The sad accidental death of Mr. George J. Dicker cast quite a gloom over the whole district, as he was a very worthy young fellow, who had won the goodwill of everyone. He leaves a young wife to whom he was united on Boxing Day of last year only, to mourn her loss and his parents and relatives, who also reside here, to unite with her in their grievous affliction. Fully 400 persons assembled at the local cemetery to pay the last respects due to a worthy son, an affectionate husband and a popular resident.
Emu Bay Times, North West & West Coast Advocate. 28 Oct 1899 ~ IN MEMORIAM

Advocate, 31 August 1927 DEVONPORT BLAZE
PRACTICALLY ALL STOCK AFFECTED. The damage to the stock as a result of the fire at Messrs. Roe and Paul's yesterday morning proved a great deal more extensive than was at first thought. Mr. W. Whitfield, the insurance assessor, stated that he had not gone thoroughly into the damage, but he estimated it at roughly £4500. The stock was covered by £5400 with the Liverpool London and Globe Insurance Company. The fire, it is thought, originated as the result of a wooden plug in the brick wall igniting through being in close proximity to a fireplace in the premises of A. J. Dicker, bootmaker, next door. On examination, there were several plugs in the wall where tho fire started one of which was burned out. After burning through, the plug caught on to the rolls of material and shelving that was against the wall at this particular spot, when, after smouldering for sometime the cloth and other fabrics evidently burst into flames. The steel ceiling of the shop was severely scorched where the flames played round in a circle in an endeavor to find an outlet. At the opposite end the partitions at the back of the windows were scorched, and lines of cashmere hose and other inflammable articles hung on top of tho counters were burned to cinders, showing how the flames leaped round. Articles in practically all parts of the shop were destroyed and others damaged by water. The section where the conflagration started was where the most expensive goods were and very little was left untouched in the whole row of shelves on this side. After burning for a while a large skylight above the heart of the fire was broken open by the heat and this caused a current of air to enter which fanned the blaze making it increase in volume, and giving it a fair hold. It was at this stage that the fire brigade arrived. The draught caused by the opening of the door for the admittance of men with the hose further increased the blaze, but it was soon under control, and within an hour they were able to leave the premises. Had it been other than a calm night or had the alarm been given half an hour later there would have been little hope of saving the building, in fact, the shops adjoining would have been endangered. The firemen arrived on the scene promptly on receiving the alarm. Articles in the windows of the shop at tho top, where the flames reached, were damaged, while three plate glass windows facing Stewart street were cracked. On the floor above, the rooms occupied by Mr B. C. Wall, dentist, were not affected. It is a remarkable coincidence that this shop was the scene of a fire in January. The outbreak on that occasion occurred on the upper storey, in Mr. Wall's dentistry chambers, but considerable damage was done to the goods in the shop by water.
The Mercury, 25 July 1954
At the Court of Requests Alfred J. Dicker, of Devonport, sued Aaron E. J. Cowburn, of Eugenana, for the recovery of 10/9 for a pair of slippers which it was stated were sold to the defendant. The plaintiff's case was that the slippers and shoes were purchased, and the latter were paid for by a daughter of the defendant, but the slippers were omitted from the bill by mistake, but an account was rendered later. The defendant denied making the purchase, and said he had not met the plaintiff till that day. On tho day when he was supposed to have been in the shop October 18 1922 he was working at the quarries. Evidence was tendered by the then secretary of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. to show that Cowburn was working at the quarries on the day in question. The Commissioner said it was not clear that the right person was being sued, and he nonsuited the plaintiff.

DICKER-TREBILCO A pretty wedding took place in the Kindred Methodist Church, Forth, on Wednesday, the contracting parties being Miss Emma Florence Trebilco, youngest daughter of the late Thomas and Mrs Trebilco, of Mount Harmony Kindred, and Arthur Robert Dicker, of Yolla. There was a large gathering present The church was beautifully decorated by the friends of the bride. As the bride entered the church on the arm of her brother, Mr G. P. Trebilco, by whom she was given away, the choir sang "The voice that breathed o'er Eden.' Miss Thelma Mott presided at the organ. The bride was becomingly attired in a white crepe dechene dress embroidered with silk and pearl trimmings, and was attended by her cousin, Miss May Gibson, and Miss Flo Lindus as bridesmaids, who wore pink voile and white silk dresses respectively and carried the usual posies. The bride wore the usual veil and orange blossom, lent by her cousin, Mrs Kemp, and carried a lovely bouquet made by Miss Flo Lindus, of Launceston. The bride knelt on a cushion made and given by Mrs L. Diprose. As the bridal party was leaving the church the 'Wedding March' was played by Miss Rockliff, of Barrington. Doberty proposed the health of bride and bridegroom, and Mr Dicker responded. The bridesmaids were toasted by Mr. Reg Trebilco and the parents of bride and bridegroom by Rev C. J.
