NOTES
Timaru Herald, 24 July 1909 A progressive euchre party and dance were held in the Victoria hall, Winchester, on Thursday evening, in aid of Mr John Bill, the recent sufferer by the disastrous fire at Eltham. Mr Bill and his family were for many years resident near Winchester. There were 60 present and the prize winners were Miss Campbell and Mr Elkis. A dance was held afterwards at which the musicians were Messrs Roddick and Hergan, with Mr J. Cripps as M.C. The takings were ?6 (July 2013 equivalent of $971), a very pleasing result for the promoters, Messrs J. Wilks, J. Cripps and J. Farrell
Taranaki Herald, 6 August 1909 Yesterday afternoon, in the Sports Ground, a team from the Fire Brigade played a team nominally composed of butchers and bakers, but really consisting of Star Club seniors and juniors in a match arranged as a 'benefit' to Mr J. volunteered: for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in June 1915. Served with the battalion throughout 1916 and 1917, and the following year had reached the rank of sergeant. He was 29 years old when he performed the deed for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. On 1 Sep 1918 near Bancourt, the leading waves of the battalion on reaching a crest of high ground, found that a line of enemy machine-gun posts offered a serious obstacle to further advance. The company, however, advanced against these posts under point-blank fire and when about 18m away Grant, closely followed by a comrade, rushed ahead of his platoon, entering the centre post and demoralising the garrison so that the platoon were able to mop up the positions. In the same manner he rushed the post on the left and the remaining posts were quickly occupied and cleared by his company.
Shortly afterwards he was promoted to second lieutenant and traveled to Cambridge in England for officer training in October 1918. He was wounded in November, within days of his return to the front. His service with the NZEF ended with his repatriation to New Zealand in 1919

about ELTHAM Cemetery
In the early days the cemetery was referred to as the RAWHITIROA cemetery & the NGAERE LAWN cemetery. With subsequent local authority boundary changes, it is now the ELTHAM CEMETERY situated at the corner of Rawhitiroa and Anderson Road.
The entrance gate is on Anderson Road:
* The LAWN BURIAL site is on the RIGHT
* The PIONEER cemetery is on the LEFT with stillborn and children in the front
* At the bend of the lawn area, on the LEFT, is the RSA Cemetery, both burial & cremation
* Continuing along the drive way, you come to the original denominational site:
- On your LEFT is the PRESBYTERIAN site rows 1 to 8, followed by the ANGLICAN site rows 1 to 12.
- On your RIGHT, the METHODIST site 1 to 8, followed by CATHOLIC site 1 to 8. There is an extension along the Catholic site to extend the general burial site for all denominations
* At the very far end of the Presbyterian site is the CREMATION site
about the cemetery DATABASE
It was noticed whilst doing this journal, that a number of same death dates kept occurring, 19-5-1916, 24-6-1916 and many others (all 7 Harrison were listed as dying 29-10-1919!). It was also noticed that all those listed as dying on these dates had either no name, or no age, or both.
I presume these dates are used when the information is unknown!
This then required that all people be researched individually & their ages & death dates were added here (if found). Those not found are left as the database has them. If you find exact dates that repeat often, treat with caution
* All (database) deaths & burials are exactly 2 days apart (this seldom really happens) so, as always, use the following as a guide only for your own research
* Database does not show days, weeks or months. If a child died aged 3 months their record will show aged 3 (important to remember)
* Plot numbers here are the 'new' Plot numbers. For the old Plot numbers search at the above database link

FOOTNOTE
A very special thank you to Wai-Yin, Eltham, Kaponga, Library Plus Officer of the South Taranaki District Council who wrote me 21 March 2014: "The total number of interments in this cemetery is anyone's guess! A story I have come across is that people have come into the cemetery to bury their dead (ashes?) at night illegally, no interment cost! Also, at one time, there was a very careless Saxton who buried children/stillborn under bushes/trees. These are all hearsay. The official number I have no occasion to find out either because some of the plots were reserved a long time ago but not used and some plots have burial and ashes interred, that is, multiple interments. Some have double depth interment and lastly memorial only plot. The oldest record was in 1898 and we do have hard copy of about 80% of the plot purchase/interment records"

Lyttelton Times, 10 December 1868 GREAT FIRE IN TIMARU
Monday last may indeed be called "black Monday" for Timaru, as on that day there occurred one of the most disastrous fires that has ever taken place in New Zealand - a fire that in the short space of a little over an hour swept away over 30 buildings, and destroyed, as far as we at present know, at least ?70,000 worth of property
(Dec 2013 equivalent of $7,837,888.). Unfortunately the wind was blowing fiercely from the nor'-west at the time, and to this cause may be assigned the reason that so many buildings, both isolated and in blocks, were destroyed, as the wind carried the burning embers and fired the shingled roofs of houses 200 or even 300 yards distant from where the fire was raging.
As the Timaru Herald office was destroyed, and all our staff were engaged in saving what was possible from the burning building, we cannot give in this issue so full an account of the tremendous conflagration as we should have wished.
The following is a list of the buildings destroyed:-
On the West Side, Main South Road
Mr D. MUNRO's furniture warehouse (origin of the fire)
Mr KITSON's offices (NZ Insurabce Company)
Mr NELSON, tailor
Mr WOOD, saddler
Mr SEYMOUR, watchmaker
Mr SALOMON, draper
Mr FRENCH, seedsman
Mr YOUNGHUSBAND, bookseller
Mr GREER, tobacconist
Mr JACOBS, watchmaker
Mr ESKINE, grocer
Mr WATKINS, chemist
Mr WILLIAMSON's offices
The Bank of New Zealand
The Pot and Telegraph offices
Messrs CLARKSON and TURNBULL's warehouse
Mr BELDY, hairdresser
Dr BUTLER, chemist
Messrs CLARKSON and TURNBULL's ironmongery store
The TIMARU HERALD offices
Mr BILTON, bookseller
Mr BYRNE's private house
Executors James KING, butcher shop and house
Messrs McCAA and MORGAN, bakers
Mr HITCH, tinsmith
On the East Side, Main South Road
Mr WEAVER, taolor
An empty shop
Premises of the Timaru Butchering Company
Mr PERRY's offices
The CLUB HOTEL
Mr MOUNTFORD, photographer
Mr MELTON, private house
Mr MELTON's stables
Mr TURNBULL's brick building, occupied by Fraser Brother, butchers and Mr POGONOWKSI, hairdresser
A small private house
The following buildings were damaged:
Messrs Cain MUNRO and Co's warehouse
Mr HUTTON, gorcer
Messrs TODD, drapers
Mr GREEN, Ship Hotel
* see link to read the description of the fire in order of the direction it spread
... There was a small roadway between the stores of Clarkson and Turnbull and the next building, Mr Beldy's shop, but this was covered over by an upper span containing one store room. Mr Beldy's place was of course, next devoured, and as far as we know, he saved nothing and was uninsured. Adjoining Mr Beldy's shop, on the south side, was the chemist and druggist shop of Dr Butler, who resided on the premises ...

Star, 2 June 1870 FIRE AT TIMARU
A fire broke out last night, at Messrs Chandler and Jenkins' grocers shop, by which it, and the small block of buildings adjoining, belonging to Mr Cullmann, were utterly destroyed.
When the fire was nearly over, the shop of Mr Beldy, tobacconist, in another part of the town, was found to be on fire. Failing to awake the inmates, the front door was burst open, and the fire was got under with some little damage to property. Mr Todd was, we believe, the first person in the shop, and assistance being at hand, the fire was soon got under, though not without some little damage to property, some of which seemed quite unnecessary - the smashing of the front windows especially. The proprietor of the shop, Mr Beldy, who was in bed upstairs, was soon present on the scene and was quite unable to account for the fire break out. The origin of this fire is also unknown. It is supposed to have arisen from lucifer matches lying about on the floor which somehow or other got ignited
Timaru Herald, 26 November 1870 ACCIDENT
An accident happened on Wednesday, Nov 9th, which might have proved very serious. Three men were driving in a buggy in the direction of Timaru on the other side of Saltwater Creek bridge. By some accident they all were pitched out somewhere about the hill overlooking the Saltwater Creek flat, and the pair of horses with the empty buggy came galloping down the incline towards the bridge. Just before arriving at the bridge, the horses were turned aside by Mr Beldy of the volunteer corps who was passing at the time, and were at last stopped by him. One of the men pitched out was somewhat hurt about the face and another had some severe abrasions on the leg

Press, 11 June 1875 ALICE BELDY IN LONDON
From our London Correspondent. - The Duke of Edinburgh, a fine vessel of 2000 tons, belonging to the New Zealand Shipping Company, sails to-day or to-morrow from Gravesend, having left the docks on Wednesday; she is commanded by Captain Mosey; she is bound to your own port of Timaru and she conveys about two hundred free-passage emigrants for the New Zealand Government. The young women and girls, to the number of forty, are placed in charge of a matron, whom some of your readers will know, Mrs Beldy of Timaru. She came to England but six weeks ago, arriving by the Nelson on the 26th of June, but found the voyage and the change of air so beneficial to her health, that she is quite ready to cross the sea again without further delay. I had the pleasure yesterday of seeing her in the performance of her official duties at the New Zealand Emigrants Depot at Blackwell. The girls and other unmarried females going out to Timaru by this ship are said to be of a good class and I am sure they will be kindly cared for by Mrs Beldy.

Timaru Herald, 16 June 1876 CAUSE OF DEATH
Mr A. Beldy, an old resident in Timaru, died rather suddenly during Wednesday night. He had a severe illness some months ago which it was feared would be fatal and although he recovered sufficiently to attend to his business he was never strong afterwards. He was compelled to abstain from business a few days ago through illness but was walking about on the day of his death. The immediate cause of death was inflammation of the lungs.

Star, 19 June 1876 OBITUARY
We have, with regret, to chronicle the sudden death, on Wednesday night, of a very old settler, Mr A. Beldy, of Timaru. He was well known through South Canterbury in connection with all volunteer movements. He took a very active part in the Timaru Artillery Company, and was universally esteemed by the members of that corps as well as by the townspeople. He had for the last few months been ailing, but no serious results were entertained. He will be remembered by many Christchurch volunteers, being till lately, a regular attender at all camps held here.
Timaru Herald, 19 June 1876 THE FUNERAL
The funeral of the late Mr Beldy took place yesterday afternnon. The deceased having been a member of the Masonic body and the Oddfellows, a large number of the Brethren of the Lodge of St John, the Caledonian Lodge and the Star of Canterbury Lodge attended the funeral in regalia. A considerable number of other friends of the deceased also attended. The members of the Societies walked in processional order, the funeral being one of the most extensive that has been seen in Timaru. The burial service was performed partly by the Rev. Mr Gillies (Presbyterian), to whose Church the deceased belonged and partly by the Rev. L. L. Brown, the Chaplain of St John's Lodge.

Witness to the signatures - JOHN BARGH, Danevirke, June 2, 1888
* JOHN ALFRED Burmester also had the Mail run to Weber.
Bush Advocate, 7 November 1889 Mr Burmester made his maiden trip with the mail to Weber on Monday, returning next day. He reports that the road is not in the best of conditions for fast travelling, the journey taking him about six hours to accomplish. He considers the district a very fine one indeed - for mosquitoes - which are of a greatly superior variety to those about here.
* In 1890 he was appointed the Returning Officer at Danevirke. In 1901 he was a member of the Ruahine Mounted Rifles, as Sergeant J. A. Burmester, when they competed for the Coleman Shield
John's wife (Ada nee ?) was very involved in the community. She held a dancing class, wrote a couple of 'papers', entitled "Woman's Mission", "Reading', & "Mental Science", played the piano & organ and sung at numerous local concerts. She was on the committee of the Dannevirke Library and a member of the Dannevirke Debating Society.
* They had a daughter 23 July 1893, Vera Burmester. Vera married in New Zealand in 1919 to Morgan Cyprian McMahon O'BRIEN
In 1908 they were living 'back' in England when he wrote this letter, stating he had been a resident of over twenty years in the Hawke's Bay. They appear again in Auckland in 1918. Ada Burmester died 20 May 1926 aged 63 & is buried at Hillsborough cemetery, Mt Roskill Auckland. Her headstone reads: In Loving Memory of ADA, Wife of John Alfred Burmester. Alfred returned to England as did his daughter and her husband Morgan Cyprian Mcmahon O'Brien (1886-) (14 Winchester Road, Worthing, Sussex in 1932. Mays Hill Road, Shortlands, Kent in 1935)

LAWS on running a PUB in Otago 1874
A long, (but interesting) article regarding the rules and regulations on running a hotel/pub in Otago in 1874 appeared in the Otago Witness 25 April 1874
I have included the link here if you wish to read the article in full and have listed below some of the most interesting (and often amusing, compared with today)
ANNUAL LICENSING MEETING
The first sitting of the new Licensing Bench under the Act of 1873, commenced at noon on Tuesday in the Resident magistrate's Court, before J. Bathgate, Esq., Chairman and A. C. Strode Esq., J. Fulton Esq., and W. Mason Esq., Commissioners. Before commencement of the business, Mr Bathgate spoke as follows:-
...In opening for the first time the Licensing Court, established under the provisions of the Licensing Act of last session, a few remarks on the subject may be deemed advisable. Important changes in the law have been made.
1 A permanent Court, consisting of the Resident magistrate and three Commissioners, appointed by the Government, has been constituted for the granting of licenses ...
2 Full power is conferred on the Court to grant or refuse any certificate in its discretion ...
3 The police are required to be present at the Court, and report to the Court on the conduct of every licensed house and upon the accommodation provided
4 Two-thirds of the adult residents in a district may memorialise against the granting of any certificate. The power is thus placed in the hands of the people themselves to shut up any house not wanted ...
5 Any householder within the district may appear in person and state objections to the granting or renewal of any license applied for
6 The provisions in the Provincial Ordinances in regard to accommodation and other matters are not repealed ...
...The purpose of these laws being to regulate the liquor traffic ...
* to take care that the traffic is kept under proper control and to lessen the temptation to the weak, the reckless and the improvident, by restricting the number of licensed houses strictly to what is found to be necessary ...
* to deal rigorously with those who encourage drunkenness, gambling, prostitution or crime ...
...In order that the princilpes which will regualte the decision of the Court may be fully known, I will conclude by giving a summary of them:-
I The accommodation prescribed in the Provincial Ordinance to be rigidly required
II The law as regards Sunday traffic to be declared to be operative. Any infringement will operate to prevent renewal
III Unnecessary competition to be discouraged by the refusal or withdrawal of licenses where the accommodation is apparently not required
IV No license to be granted to an unmarried man, unless in exceptional cases. The law assumes that licensed houses are for the benefit of travelers. No house for the use of travellers can be properly conducted unless under the management of a matron
V Licenses to be granted to widows only in very exceptional cases
VI Any licensee who may be reported as showing incivility or refusing to give information to the Police, or as keeping a dirty house, or allowing disorderly conduct on his premises, or being intoxicated himself, will be refused a renewal
VII Any licensee permitting gambling on his premises will be refused a renewal. No, I may state, that the character of a house will not save them if gambling has been carried on ... a fine young man's prospects in life blasted and himself sentenced to twelve months imprisonment in consequence of gambling in a house in Dunedin, apparently respectable
VIII A list of person thrice convicted of drunkenness in one year will be made up by the police and supplied to licensees. Any licensee supplying such confirmed drunkards with liquor will be refused a renewal
IX Licensees allowing prostitutes to assemble or meet other persons on their premises will be refused a renewal
X No license shall be granted to or renewal given, to any person who is the owner of houses let as brothels or to prostitutes
XI The granting of bottle licenses will be conferred with great caution, and only in cases where the Court is satisfied there will be no abuse of the privilege. None of those shams about clapping a piece of tin foil on a bottle will be allowed now ...
(Tin foil was used as a filling for tooth cavities prior to the 20th century !)

* HARRISON, William senior (69) - Timaru - Baker
Timaru Herald, 25 March 1872 Many of our readers will learn with regret that Mr William Harrison, senr., expired at his residence on LeCren's Terrace on Friday last. Mr Harrison was an old settler in Timaru, having arrived in the Province in the ship Roman Emperor, in 1860. For several years before emigrating, Mr Harrison held the situation of baker and confectioner in the establishment of the Duke of Richmond, and we believe held other offices in the same household. Soon after his arrival in the Colony he suffered a sad bereavement by the loss of a son, who was drowned in the Rangitata. On settling in Timaru he established a brewery - the first in the town or district. For some years past he has given up brewing and turned his attention to the manufacturer of wines from English fruit, in which we believe he was fairly successful. Mr Harrison was twice married, and he leaves a widow to mourn his loss. The disease which terminated fatally was internal gout. Mr Harrison was in his 70th year. Yesterday, the Rev G. Foster, at St Mary's, in the morning sermon, feelingly alluded to the death of the old man. His funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon

* WALLACE, John Tennant (29) - Haldon Station - Runholder
Christchurch Press, 6 August 1874 WALLACE - on 4 July at Timaru, John Tennant Wallace, at Haldon Station, age 29
History of Haldon Station ... In 1868 the Teschmakers sold Haldon to William Cunningham Smith, John Tennant Wallace and George James Denarstoun (sic). Unfortunately during their ownership the rabbit plague grew to such a proportion that it became one of the contributing factors for them to decide to sell the property in 1878 to William Pringle ...
John is buried Plot 69, Row 15 at Timaru cemetery. He has a crypt with a large carved marble anchor sitting on top (photo at above link). Why an anchor? Was he a midshipman in the Royal Navy like his friend G. J. Dennistoun? His friends must have arranged for the inscription and tomb! John Tennet Wallace was born on 26 March 1845. Two brothers, Charles Tennant Wallace, Robert Hugh Wallace had sound careers in the army. Their parents were Robert Wallace, Writer, Woodside Terrace and Catherine Tennant, whose father was Henry Ritchie Tennant, and their city was Glasgow. They were indirectly descended from William Wallace, and that it represented the ancient house of Ellersile. Wallace, Cunningham Smith and Dennistoun purchased Haldon Station in the Mackenzie in 1868. John became ill in Timaru and his friends Dennistoun, Kimbell, Andrew Turnbull, Fred Teshemaker, Martelli, Orbell and "the Doctor" all took turns to nurse him and on Sunday 2nd August 1874 at 11:30 a.m. , poor old Wallace breathed his last." Cunningham Smith was with him to the last. He had frightful agony and finally violent delirium. He died in Timaru unmarried at the age of 29 years. John was very short, comic and too full of fun wrote Robert Pinney in Early South Canterbury Runs, page 138
