dedication to MURRAY LYNN (1950-2013) of KiwiCelts
It is with regret I announce that Murray Patrick Lynn (1950-2013), the creator, author and administrator of KiwiCelts, passed away 14 Nov 2013
His family has announced that "KiwiCelts will remain online in it's present form. Decisions about it's future development and maintenance will be made in due course"
In dedication to Murray and in honor of all his incredible hard work over the years I submit his site in an abridged form. It includes Cemeteries, Irish maps, Kiwiwiki, Research Links and his Family History from as far back as 1200 and ranges around the world, from Ireland, Scotland, England and Germany to the Argentine, the USA, Australia and New Zealand
You will find it an invaluable site in your genealogy research
Unbelievably, Murray's Genealogy Place Map Index, geneaMap Database, is not only a cemetery database but a list of all places:
* ART GALLERIES
* CEMETERIES
* CHURCHES
* LIGHTHOUSES
* MARAES
* MEMORIALS
* MUSEUMS
* ORPHANGES
* RAILWAYS
* SCHOOLS
* SHIPWRECKS
* TEMPLES
* UNDERTAKERS
* URUPA
* WAR MEMORIALS
A HUGE site so be patient as it can take a while to load
It is initially sorted at his site by:
Country-Province-District and Name, but you can re-sort it when in there by clicking on the column headings.
Clicking on the Place Name takes you to the geneaMap to see the map location and full details - address, related websites, photos etc
Was unsure the best way to present the data Murray has but finally decided to list it here in alphabetical 'Name of Place' order.
Every name is a searchable link. Visit his site to find all other relevant info

- taken from his link above: Francis William Anthony Franks, Baker, Leithfield. Mr. Franks has conducted this business since 1889. The bakery of brick, and house and stable of wood, are erected on part of a three-acre section. From this centre a large business is done with the surrounding districts. Mr. Franks was born in London, in 1844. He learned his business with his father, and came out to Lyttelton by the ship ?Zealandia,? in 1858. For six years he was employed in Christchurch, and had two years' experience on the Thames goldfields. Mr. Franks then returned to Christchurch, where he was in business for two years before settling at Leithfield. He has been on the Leithfield school committee for twenty-four years, and has occupied the chair since 1900. Mr. Franks served in several volunteer companies in the early days. He was in the Drum and Fife Band, and was at one time bugler of No. 6 Company. He was married, in 1866, to a daughter of the late Mr. G. OBITUARY OF CHARLOTTE SMITH
* ... Last week we mentioned the passing of Mrs Smith Senr. It is 69 years ago since Mrs Smith, then a single woman left the London docks in the good ship 'Brilliant'. In October of 1842 Mr and Mrs Smith were married.
For ten years they resided in Auckland,
... Mr and Mrs Smith decided to go on the land, and for fifty five years, from 1852 to 1907 the deceased lived at Matakana. She took charge of the first Post office there, an appointment she held for many years, only resigning on account of advancing age.
... The family circle has been broken by the deaths of Mr Smith and three of the sons. Mr Smith lost his life, in the early days, by drowning in the Matakana river. The two daughters, Mrs COXHEAD of Auckland and Mrs VIPOND of Wade; and three sons, Messrs Joseph and William Smith of Matakana, and Mr Hugh Smith of Whangaripo survive their parents. There are 44 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 6 great, great, grandchildren. Mrs Smith went to reside at the Wade with Mrs Vipond during the last four years.
So the oldest identity of Matakana has gone to her rest, after a life fill of service
husband James Smith drowned in the Matakana 26 May 1870

LOCAL HEROES IN FRANCE
... MAUNGATUROTO - Again it is our sad duty to record the deaths of two more of our brave lads who left this district to do their duty to their King and Empire, and who have laid down their lives on the fields of France
* ... On the whole, the Maungaturoto lads appear to have been fortunate. During the Gallipoli campaign the two brothers HARRISON were killed; but since then, though several were wounded, none was killed till the recent advance in France, when Trooper Innes FINLAYSON, A.M.R., and Private Kingsley SATCHWELL, A Battalion, were killed in action. The former is the second son of the late Alex Finlayson, and is one of four brothers who enlisted. His elder brother left with the main body, and was wounded at Gallipoli and invalided home. Another brother is still in France and one in Egypt.
... Kingsley Satchell was the nephew of the Rev T. W. POTTS, and had resided here for only a comparatively short time when the call came, and he too joined the colours.
NOTES
* Kingsley Satchell, Private 12/2463, was the son of Isabella Satchwell, of "Muritai," Clifton Rd., Takapuna, Auckland and the late Frederick James Satchwell. He also served in Egypt and at Gallipoli
* Malcolm Innes Kingsley Satchwell, Lance Corporal 13/2433, was born in 1884, the son of Margaret Finlayson (nee McINNES), of 15A Norana Avenue, Remuera, Auckland and the late Alexander Finlayson
13 DECEMBER 1916
SUDDEN DEATHS
* ... There have been two very sudden deaths in this district during the past week or two. The first was that of George ASHBOLT, who was working on the Government gum works. He was found dead in his bed, and although two others were sleeping in the whare they were not aware of anything wrong until they went to wake him in the morning, and found him dead.
... The Coroner, (Mr F. C. McLennan) held an inquest. Dr Meinhold, of Helensville held a post-mortem examination, which showed that death had resulted from fatty degeneration of heart. The jury gave a verdict in accordance with the doctor's evidence. Deceased's mother resides in the Canterbury district
William George Ashbolt was 44, 2nd of 9 children (4 sons) of George ASHBOLT & Minnie Jane HINDE
* ... The second death was that of Mrs McGRATH, a woman of 49. She had only retuned from town a few days previously, apparently in her usual health, when she was taken ill suddenly with a periodical complaint, and collapsed.
The Coroner, after viewing the body, and considering evidence of her having been to the doctor lately, decided it was not necessary to hold an inquest.
She leaves a husband and seven children to mourn their loss - five grown-up sons and daughters and a boy and a girl living at home.
Milly Margaret nee STEPHENS, had married James McGrath in 1885

TWO PUHOI PIONEERS Once again must the evidences of regret and sorrow manifest themselves as we are called upon to chronicle the deaths of two Puhoi pioneers, viz., Mrs HENDL and Mr Christian PAUL.
* ... Mrs Hendl, who passed away at her residence, Puhoi, on the 6th August, had reached the grand old age of eighty years. Although her death was sudden, still it was not entirely unexpected, as she had been in failing health for many years. Mrs Hendl is survived by her husband, two sons, and five daughters, One son, Mr Bartley Hendl, lives near Helensville, the other Mr Joseph Hendl, at Matakana, while four daughters, Mrs Matthew WECK, Mrs Martin TOLHOPH (Kate), Mrs John Wenzlick (Mary) and Mrs Martin Wenzlick (Margaret) are residents of Puhoi, the remaining one, Mrs DAVIES (Theresa), living in Auckland.

Her mother, Mrs Logan (Elizabeth Maria), was a sister of Mrs Hendl and Mrs STRAKA senr (Maria)., and came up from the South to attend the Puhoi Diamond Jubilee. Mrs Logan brought her daughter with her, although the latter was in poor health, but hoped the trip might be beneficial. Her condition became so serious while in Puhoi that it was decided to remove her to Auckland. Owing to the bad state of the roads Miss Logan had to be carried on a stretcher by relays of willing volunteers, right out to Tahekeroa station, and thence conveyed by rail to the city.
In spite of all care at the Auckland Hospital she passed away next day on Wednesday, Aug. 8th, her remains being taken to Blenheim for interment.
Margaretha 'Margaret' nee PODLESAK married Joseph Hendl (1847-1934) and had 2 daughters, Anna & Maria before they emigrated to NZ on the 'Friedeburg' which left Hamburg, Germany 10 May 1875, arriving Napier 24 Aug 1875
*... Within the week another old resident of Puhoi, Mr Christian PAUL, died at his home at Puka Puka on the 11th August, after a painful and prolonged illness at the age of 56 years, so the end was not unexpected.
He leaves a widow, four sons, and four daughters, two of the latter, Mrs John Weck and Mrs E. Johnson, being residents of Warkworth

You will find it an invaluable site in your genealogy research
Unbelievably, Murray's Genealogy Place Map Index, geneaMap Database, is not only a cemetery database but a list of all places:
* ART GALLERIES
* CEMETERIES
* CHURCHES
* LIGHTHOUSES
* MARAES
* MEMORIALS
* MUSEUMS
* ORPHANGES
* RAILWAYS
* SCHOOLS
* SHIPWRECKS
* TEMPLES
* UNDERTAKERS
* URUPA
* WAR MEMORIALS
Visit his site to find all other relevant info

she became Mrs THOMAS in New Zealand
The number of women who married THOMAS men in New Zealand is huge and doing individual profiles is too daunting at this time. Below is a list of names taken from New Zealand BDM Historical Records (so probably not comprehensive) and spelling of names is always questionable so take care and use this list as a guide only ...
... I will emend spelling as time permits & indicate with *
put into order of brides surnames for easier reading
*town beside name is where they were at least some (if not all) of the time

Wanganui Chronicle, 15 October 1919
... The death of Mr Archibald Ingram at Wanganui Hospital removes one of the pioneer settlers of Rangitikei district. Born in Tasmania in 1843, he left with his parents six years later for New Zealand, in 1849, residing at the Hutt till he was thirteen years of age, when, in company with Mr W. Cawood (William Kirby Smith Cawood 1842-1928), of Marton (who was then eleven years of age), he walked to Marton (150km today with roads). He drove bullock drays with goods from Wanganui to Marton, followed his trade as a blacksmith, launched into business at Bulls as a brewer and during the latter part of his life was stock dealer and drover. He was the first volunteer in the Marton district to serve in the Maori War and was a member of the Volunteer Corps for a number of years. He also took a keen interest in friendly societies. He was the oldest member of Court Little John, A.O.F., and took a keen interest in the welfare of the Court in its infancy. His wife predeceased him nine years ago. Dominion, 20 Aug 1931 Mrs J. Prouse Dead - Keen Devotee of Music - Famous Artists' Friend Formerly one of Wellington's best known personalities, Mrs Prouse, relict of the late Mr John Prouse, died at her home in Clifton Terrace (where she had lived for forty-five years) on Tuesday evening, after a long illness. Mrs Prouse's health had not been satisfactory for ten years past and it had failed noticeably since the death of her husband less than a year ago. The late Mrs Prouse (nee Helen Harding) was born in Cardiff, Wales, and came to New Zealand in the ship Salisbury, which arrived here on January 20, 1874. Later she married Mr Prouse, and had, with the exception of trips abroad, resided in Wellington ever since. The love of music, so strong in the Welsh, was deeply implanted in this lady, whose record of achievement in encouraging the best in music in New Zealand is probably unique. This urge was accentuated by her husband's fine talent as a singer and her constant association with artists and leaders of musical thought. When Mr Prouse toured England with Kubelik years ago, Mrs Prouse accompanied him and became the personal friend of Sir Charles Santley, Sir Henry Wood, Antonia Dolores and many other famous artists. Distinguished artists such as Mr Andrew Black, Dolores, Mr and Mrs Albert Mallinson (the celebrated composer and singer), made Mr and Mrs Prouse's residence their home while in Wellington. Once when Mr Alfred Hill lay suffering from pleurisy in the hospital here, nothing would do but that he must be removed to Clifton Terrace so as to be under Mrs Prouse's special observation and care. It was Mrs Prouse who first detected exceptional talent in the Ellwood trio, of Christchurch and who was instrumental in having Mr George Ellwood, now of Wellington, sent to study the cello under Jean Gerardy at the Liege (Belgium) Conservatoire.
Mrs Prouse was particularly keen about orchestral music. She had a knowledge of the best of the world's orchestras through her four or five long trips to Europe and lost no opportunity of doing all in her power to bring about an improvement in New Zealand. Realising that the Christchurch Exhibition Orchestra was the finest ever assembled in New Zealand, Mrs Prouse sponsored a tour of that organisation when the exhibition closed. Through the failure of the Auckland season, the venture was not a financial success and Mrs Prouse had to realise on some of her property to meet the deficiency. In sponsoring the first professional orchestra here (under the baton of the late Mr Herbert Bloy) Mrs Prouse had the idea of popularising Sunday orchestral concerts on the lines of those given at Queen's Hall, London and many will remember what a high standard was achieved by that orchestra.
On another occasion Mrs Prouse showed her enthusiasm for music in a remarkable manner. Madame Melba was associated prominently with the musical arrangements in connection with the festivities for the Duke and Duchess of York (the present King and Queen), when they went to Melbourne to open the first Commonwealth Parliament. Melba wanted a good baritone, so cabled to Mr Prouse to go across. Mrs Prouse accompanied him. She heard the band of the Royal Marines on the Ophir, on which the Royal party travelled and decided there and then that the public of New Zealand should be given a chance to hear it, though the band seldom if ever was allowed to play off the Ophir. Being a woman of great tact and strong in purpose, her representations in the right quarters were successful and this fine band gave concerts in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Mrs Prouse knew Italian opera thoroughly, having experienced two long seasons in Milan.
The deceased leaves a family of three sons and two daughters. The sons are Messrs W. J. and Oliver Prouse of Wellington and Mr George Prouse of Milan, Italy; and the daughters are Mrs George Anderson, of Buenos Aires and Miss Constance Prouse, of Wellington. There will be a memorial service at St Paul's Pro-Cathedral at 2p.m. tomorrow. The interment will take place at the little cemetery at Wainuiomata, the valley associated with the family ever since Wellington was first settled and where three generations of the Prouses lie at rest.

NZETC, written 1897 Mr John Prouse, the well-known baritone singer, is the third son of the late Mr Richard Prouse, one of the pioneer settlers of Wellington and was born in 1856 in this district. From a very early age he displayed musical taste and the possession of a good singing voice and as a lad he was a member of the church choirs at the Wainui and at the Taita, where his family resided. Mr Prouse, however, was of a rather retiring disposition and it was not until 1885 that he made his debut upon the concert platform at Wellington. At a bound he leaped into popularity. His rich orotund voice, and his faculty for fine and true expression, at once proclaimed the born artist, and local musicians cordially welcomed the young debutant as an acquisition to the musical resources of the City. At the Wellington Musical Festival of 1888, Mr Prouse won golden opinions by his splendid singing of the music allotted to the role of “Elijah” in Mendelssohn's immortal oratorio. It is only just to observe that Mr Prouse ascribes much of his success as a singer to the careful tuition he received during two years from Mr Robert Parker. Acting upon the strong advice of his friends, Mr Prouse, in 1890, left for England, accompanied by his wife and family, in order to have his voice and method trained and developed under good masters. For twelve months he studied with characteristic earnestness of purpose under Mr T. A. Wallworth, ex-professor of the Royal Academy of Music and at the Academy of Mr Wilhelm Ganz, the well-known song-writer, devoting himself chiefly to oratorio work. During this period he also found time to accept concert engagements at the Crystal Palace, in St. James's Hall, London and in the provinces, receiving many flattering notices for his performances. Mr and Mrs Prouse and family returned to Wellington in 1892 and since then Mr Prouse has taken part in nearly all the principal concerts given in Wellington, besides filling engagements at Auckland, Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill. He was entrusted with the baritone solo parts in several of the musical works produced at the Wellington Musical Festival of 1894, and for oratorio work both here and in the South Island his services are in constant request. Mr Prouse has a great love for his art and a deep sense of its grandeur and dignity. As a consequence, he has consistently eschewed its lighter and ephemeral side, and devoted himself almost entirely to high class music, especially oratorio, of which he is one of the best exponents in the Colony. He certainly stands unrivalled in New Zealand as a baritone singer in oratorio and in the rendering of such songs as “Nazareth” (Gounod), “Thou'rt Passing Hence, my Brother” (Sullivan), “The Holy City” (Adams) and “Les Rameaux” (Faure). Mr Prouse has derived much advantage in his musical studies from the musical taste and enthusiasm of his wife, and, in this connection, it may be observed that the artistic gifts of the parents have descended to their children.

Evening Post, 12 March 1894 Mr Richard Prouse, another of Wellington's pioneer settlers died last evening in the Hospital, where he had sought relief from an infection of the throat. Symptoms of the complaint only developed themselves within the last week or so and on the advice of several doctors an operation was performed on him yesterday morning. Although he rallied at first, he was unable to withstand the effects of the operation and he passed quietly away during the evening. Mr Prouse was only ten years of age when he arrived in the colony by the ship Duke of Roxburgh in 1840. Having undergone the usual vicissitudes of pioneer life, he settled upon land at Wainuiomata, and took a great interest in advancing the interests of the place, where he established a sawmill. He afterwards started another mill at Whiteman's Valley, Silverstream. Eight or ten years ago he retired from business life and has since lived in Wellington. In his younger days he was an enthusiastic Volunteer, as a lieutenant of the Wainuiomata corps and was a fine shot. His interest in this sport induced him to pay a visit to the recent meeting of the Rifle Association at Christchurch, where he handled a rifle. He leaves a widow and a family of three sons and three daughters. Two of the sons have established themselves at Levin as sawmillers and the other is Mr John Prouse, the well-known baritone singer. Two of the daughters are married - Mrs Burdan and Mrs James Wood, of Wainuiomata. The remains of the deceased will be interred at Wainuiomata tomorrow.
NZ Mail, 16 March 1894 Another old identity has passed from among us, Mr Richard Prouse. Mr Prouse died at the Hospital on March 11th. He had been suffering for some time past from a complicated disease of the throat, and an operation was performed upon him at the Hospital as late as yesterday morning. Mr Prouse, who was 64 years of age, came out to Wellington in the ship Duke of Roxburgh in 1840, when a boy of 10 years of age, and, after undergoing the privations attendant on settlement in the Colony in those early days, took up land at Wainuiomata, about 40 years ago. While residing in that locality he took a great interest in local affairs, and his death will be sincerely regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He retired from active life a few years ago, and since then has been living in Wellington. At one time Mr Prouse was an ardent Volunteer, and his love for rifle shooting followed him almost to the end, for it was only the other day that he went to the Rifle Association Meeting at Christchurch. He leaves a widow and a family of three sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. One of his sons is Mr J. Prouse, the well-known baritone singer and the two others are sawmillers at Levin.

Wellington, July 26 1898 The death is announced of William Tandy, aged 96. He came to the colony in 1841 and was probably the oldest resident of the Hutt District.
* William Tandy was born in Gloucester, England. On 18 Nov 1828, at the age of 24 years, he married 22 year old Mary Butler at Ashchurch, Gloucester, England and settled in Pamington, Gloucester. Before emigrating to New Zealand on the barque “Lord William Bentinck” in 1841, William and Mary had two children, Charles born just a few months after their marriage in 1829 and Charlotte, born in 1832.
William was a ‘farm labourer’ on the ship’s passenger list.
On the family’s arrival in NZ, they settled in the Hutt Valley.
In the 1844 Jury List William was recorded as a labourer of River Hutt. Tragedy struck the family the following year, with the death of their only son, Charles .. Independent, 17 May 184, 5 DEATHS BY DROWNING – On Friday morning, the bodies of two young men, named Charles Tandy and John Friend, were found in the River Hutt, between the Plough Inn and Aglionby Arms. They were seen last, at eleven o’clock, on Thursday night, skylarking together; but whether they met their deaths by accidentally falling into the river or not, we cannot say. We shall give a full report of the Coroner’s inquest. .. The Coroner’s report returned a verdict of ‘Accidental death by drowning'
* Three years later the Jury List for 1848 shows William as a labourer of Wainui-o-mata. Life in the Hutt Valley was very hard for the settlers in the 1840’s and many moved around to find work where they could. It seems likely that William’s presence in Wainuiomata was work related, as the following year he was back in the Hutt working and obviously saving for a farm of his own. By the mid 1850’s he is recorded as a freehold farmer living at Lower Hutt Road, River Hutt and as the valley developed and suburbs were formed and named, he was recorded as farming in Taita in the late 1870’s.
Around 1879 William was back in Wainuiomata and for the rest of his life, was recorded on the Electoral Rolls and Jury lists as residing both in Taita and Wainuiomata. It can only be assumed that whilst continuing his land ownership interests in Taita, he actually worked and resided in Wainuiomata, but apparently never owning land there.
In 1895 he was recorded as a shareholder of the Colonial Bank of New Zealand.
While living in Wainuiomata, he formed a bond with the Dick family, with a grandchild of David Dick being named John Tandy Dick. David Dick was also recorded as the undertaker and informant on William’s death certificate.
* On 24 July 1896 his wife Mary died and was buried in Christ Church cemetery in Taita. William died two years later, 21 July 1898 of senile decay. For some reason he was not buried with Mary in Taita, but instead, close to the graves of the Dick family in the Coast Road Church, Wainuiomata

Evening Post, 24 March 1892 FATALITY ON HUTT ROAD. A fatal accident occurred on the Hutt road about half-past 8 o'clock last night, resulting in the untimely death of Mrs May Sandilands Thomson, wife of James(sic) Thomson, a well known farmer of Wainui-o-mata. The accident was discovered by Dr Baker, of the Lower Hutt and Mr Sykes, chemist, of Petone, who were walking to the Lower Hutt, when they came upon an express wagon lying overturned on the roadside, not far from Dr Wilford's residence, whilst a man was vainly endeavouring to release the horse from the shafts. They assisted him to do this and, learning that his name was William Thomson and that his mother was with him on the vehicle when the accident happened, search was made and Mrs Thomson was found lying beneath the express, which contained a load of timber. Finding that they could not raise the express unaided, word was sent to the Lower Hutt and several of the employees at Cudby's stables hastened to the spot and lent their assistance. When the vehicle and timber were lifted and Mrs Thomson was released, it was found that life was extinct, she having apparently been crushed to death. The body was removed to a private house near at hand to await an inquest. The accident is said to have occurred through a wheel of the express getting into the ditch on the roadside, the driver, William Thomson, missing the road in the darkness of the night. Inspector Thomson has forwarded a report of the sad occurrence to Mr Eb. Baker, Coroner, who will hold an inquest on the remains at the Lower Hutt at 4 o'clock this afternoon. The deceased was about 60 years of age and she and her family are well-known in the Hutt district
