Colonist, 2 February 1878 FIRE IN MARLBOROUGH
... A destructive fire occurred at Clova Bay on Thursday, the 17th instant, when the store and office connected with the sawmill were destroyed, together with a boat, boatshed, about 1,000,000 feet of slabs, and a variety of other articles contained in the buildings. The weather was very unfavourable, as a steady wind was blowing the flames towards the wharf, about 200 feet of which was burned with ?100 worth of timber on it. Great difficulty was experienced in saving the residence of Mr H. Godsiff, and had the men worked less energetically the amount of destruction would have been much greater than it was. The estimated damage is ?750 ($14,200 in 2011), and the property was uninsured. The fire at Clova Bay will cause serious loss and inconvenience to the owners of the property, as apart from the immediate money loss, a considerable time will elapse before everything can be made into its former state of completeness

Evening Post, 29 April 1878 FRIGHTFUL ACCIDENT
... A fearful accident occurred on Monday last, at Messrs Godsiff and Newton's sawmills, Colva Bay, Pelorus Sound, by which a youth, named John Henn, aged 17 years, lost his life in a most appalling way. One of the large circular saws is driven by a belt from a drum, propelled by a shaft from the main steam engine, and when required to be stopped, is thrown out of gear by slipping the belt off this drum, which is below the level of the floor. Henn was sent to stop the machinery, and instead of carefully slipping off the belt in the proper way, gave it a careless kick. His foot instantly was caught by the belt, and he was carried round with terrific velocity, striking one of the flooring boards - a stout plank, an inch and a half in thickness - with such violence as to break it in two places. His fellow workmen rushed at once to the rescue, stopped the machinery as quickly as possible, and extricated the unfortunate youth from its fatal embrace. It is needless to say that life was totally extinct, the corpse being mutilated in a most horrible manner, in fact torn and battered out of all semblance of humanity, while the blood, brains, bits of skin and flesh, and fragments of clothing were sprinkled all around. The mangled remnants of what only a minute before was a living, breathing, human being, were gathered reverently together, and, being placed in an impromptu coffin, were sent to Picton by one of the coasting vessel for interment. This dreadful occurrence has cast a deep gloom over the neighbourhood

Marlborough Express, 4 September 1878 MARLBOROUGH LANDS BOARD
... A timber license in favour of Arthur Beauchamp and Henry Godsiff over the Manaroa Run held by them under lease, excepting therefrom the freehold, was submitted to and approved of by the Board, previously to being signed by the Chief Commissioner

Marlborough Express, 13 December 1880 TUHI
... About a week ago we mentioned that Tuhi, the murderer of Miss Dobie, was formerly working from one or more residents in the district. To-day we have been informed that he was some four years back in the employ of Messrs Godsiff and Beauchamp, in the Pelorus, and used frequently to carry the mails

Marlborough Express, 2 July 1886 ALMOST A ROMANCE
... A correspondent sends us the following:- There is a family living in Pelorus Sound named Harvey, in and about Clova Bay. They own a saw mill and a couple of small vessels. Neither of their own vessels being available, some of the brothers a few weeks back borrowed the cutter "Flirt" from Mr Godsiff of Manaroa, and went to Nelson for a cargo of goods for their own use. On the passage back from Nelson "Flirt" got into some difficulty, when one of the Union Co's steamers gave her a tow into apparent safety, where she anchored. A gale of wind shortly afterwards sprung up, and she was driven ashore, the entire cargo being destroyed and the vessel seriously damaged, I believe she is afloat again, but the expense will be considerable to refit.
On Wednesday night last one of the brothers, Nathan, returned from working at the Flirt, only to hear that his brother Alfred had been killed at 10 a.m. that day while working at the sawmill, two logs having smashed him into a pulp.
At 9 a.m. the same night, Isaac Harvey, another brother, was sailing the Hannah Jane (owned by Abraham Hocquard, of Guard's Bay) from Nelson with a large cargo of goods, to replace those lost in the Flirt. When beating a passage somewhere between Forsyth Island and Port Ligar, the vessel suddenly lost the wind, in which state she lay for a few moments, when another squall struck her and capsized her without a moment's warning. The men jumped into the boar, and the cutter sank instantly in deep water.
Thus, the Messrs Harvey in the space of a few weeks have lost ?1000 in good, etc (supposing the Flirt to be worth repairs). the cutter Hannah Jane, and their brother Alfred, the two latter accidents happening on one day. If the Hannah Jane is not insured she will be a great loss to Mr Hocquard, who is an aged man. I believe he was on board when the accident occurred, and had with him a lot of his own goods. Some time back he lost his eldest son, a fine young man, from the same cutter, while passing through the French Pass

Alfred Spackman died 31 August 1934 aged 84 in Otaki
Evening Post, 1 Sep 1934
The death occurred yesterday morning, at the age of 84 years, of Mr Alfred Spackman, one of Otaki’s oldest identities. He was born at Stokes Valley, and resided there for some years, when he went to Bulls, and later to Otaki, where he lived for over fifty years. He was a hard worker and was widely respected. He leaves a son, Mr George Spackman, and a daughter, Mrs Mount, of Mt Bruce, Masterton. There are nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. “I can remember Wellington when it had only one street, and that was where Manners Street and Courtenay Place now are. The buildings were all on one side and there was water on the other.” This was one of the many interesting reminiscences told by Mr Alfred Spackman, of Mill Road, Otaki, when interviewed recently.
His father, Mr George Spackman, came to New Zealand from England in the early forties, and was engaged in the timber business at Silverstream for many years. Mr Spackman, with five brothers, worked at carting the timber from his father’s mill into Wellington. Mr Spackman spoke of the days when they used to float the logs in the water on the site of the present Lambton station. The timber for the first two tees of the Queen’s Wharf was supplied by Mr Spackman, as also were the poles for the telegraph line from Lyall Bay to Castlepoint. Timber for the railway from Pipitea Point to Petone was also carted by Mr Spackman, about 12,500 sleepers being obtained from Otaki.
Speaking of the roads in the early days, Mr Spackman said: “I have known the time when we could not get from Ngahauranga to Petone. The sea used to come right up to the cliff and sweep over the road in rough weather. I have seen as many as twenty-seven wagons held up at Petone for three days. That was in the days when there was only one house, belonging to a Maori chief, at Petone, and the site of the Petone railway station was a swamp.”
Before he was 16 Mr Spackman was driving a five-horse team. He has vivid memories of carting the largest spar ever taken through the Hutt gorges. It was a 95-foot mainmast for a sailing ship, and had been cut at what was known as the “Maori Bank.” It was heart of red pine, which had been trimmed for cartage by two ship’s carpenters.
Before he came to New Zealand Mr Spackman’s father bought his land from the New Zealand Company in London, being allotted 25 acres on the present site of the Basin Reserve, which was then a swamp. He sold it at the price which he paid for it, and later an earthquake lifted it and it was drained by a Chinese. It was then that Mr Spackman, sen., moved out to Silverstream. The reclamation of the land on which the Post Office now stands was well remembered by Mr Spackman, also the time when Adelaide Road was a swamp. “I can remember when there was no money in Wellington and you were given scrip to go to the merchants for goods until a ship arrived with money from England,” he said.

Lucy Spackman died 14 Dec 1944 aged 82

Wellington Resident magistrate's Court - Squabble Among Neighbours
Mrs Hedgland, housekeeper to Mr Parker, hydropathist, of Sussex-square (Mount Cook), prayed that Mrs Monghan might be required to have sufficient sureties to keep the peace towards her little daughter, Elizabeth Hedgland, whom Mrs Monaghan was alleged to have struck and threatened. Mr Fitzgerald appeared in support of the application and Mr E. Shaw for the defence. From the evidence, it appeared that Jane's(?) little sister had thrown some water on to baby Monaghan, whereupon Mrs Monaghan came out, called Jane a "blowing trumpet" two or three times, and pulled her ear. Jane admitted that her ear didn't hurt much, and although she didn't know what a "blowing trumpet" was, she thought it must be something bad. No other evidence being forthcoming, Mr Shaw asked his Worship to dismiss the case, which was done, Mr Wardell remarking that the information should never have been laid. Mr Fitzgerald explained that he had only been retained this morning after the information had been taken out. Cross-summonses were then heard between Ward Parker and James Monaghan, the husband of Mrs Monaghan, Mr Parker stating that on Sunday, the 10th instant, he met Monaghan, and remonstrated with him with tolerance to the nuisance caused by his children, whereupon Monaghan assaulted him. Parker took out a summons on the day following and Monaghan took out one on the day following that, charging him (Parker) with having abused and assaulted him. Parker denied either having used had language to Monaghan or with having returned the assault. The case was ultimately adjourned

Wairarapa Daily Times, 20 Sep 1883
We learn from Messrs Elder & Co, of Langdale station, their old one-armed shepherd, John Hedgland, has been missing since Saturday morning last. He went to bed on Friday night, but must have gone out before daylight, for as far as can be ascertained he has not been seen since, and the worst is feared for him. He took nothing with him and has not gone to his home, which is in Wellington. He has always been a very sober old man (57), and he is well-known in the district

Wairarapa Daily Times, 22 Sep 1883
The police have made enquiries re Hedgeland, this missing shepherd from Langdale Station, but as yet there is no tidings of his whereabouts. prior to his disappearance he was apparently under the influence of some religious melancholy, and there is very little hope of his being still alive

Wairarapa Daily Times, 25 Sep 1883
(Letter to the Editor) . Sir, Allow me to contradict a report which appeared in your last Thursday's issue re John Hedgland suffering under "religious monomania." There could not be a more unlikely subject, and I had a letter from him two days before, when he expressed himself to be in good health and spirits. I am, &c., JANET HEDGLAND. Wellington, September 24, 1883

Superintendent Shearman received a telegram this morning from Constable Collarton, in charge of the Tenui (now Tinui) police station, stating that the dead body of John Hedgland, who mysteriously disappeared from Elder's Longdale Station on the 15th of last month, was discovered in the Whareama River yesterday. The deceased, who only possessed one arm, left the homestead about 4 a.m. on the 15th, without communicating with any of his fellow employees, and was never afterwards seen alive. He was 58 years of age, and a shepherd by occupation. He leaves a wife in Sussex Square to mourn her loss

An inquest on the body of John Hedgeland, held at Ica yesterday before Mr R. Maunsell J.P., the following verdict was returned:- That John Hedgeland came by his death by drowning in the Whareama river on or after the night of the 14th September

Wairarapa Daily Times, 11 Oct 1883 TINUI
On Sunday an employee on Ica Station while strolling along the banks of the Whareama River, discovered the body of the missing shepherd, John Hedgeland, caught by a snag in the river. The remains, though much decomposed were easily identified. Prompt steps were taken to inform Mr R. Maunsell J.P., and Constable Collerton of the finding of the body. An inquest was held at Ica on the following morning, and a verdict returned to the effect that the deceased came by his death through drowning in the Whareama river on or after the night of the 14th of September. Upon the body being removed from the water it was seen that the boots which the deceased wore were not laced up, and that he was without his serge jumper. The evidence wnet to show that for some little time previous to being missed, he was in a despondent state of mind. Mr Walker, the manager of Langdale Station stated that he never knew Hedgeland to go out to his work without lacing up his boots, and putting on leggings, and also that he generally took his horse and dogs. Upon being missed it was noticed that he had not taken his horse and dogs, and from this it was inferred that he had not gone away in an ordinary manner as if going to work. The remains were interred near the homestead at Ica

A letter from Mr Ward Parker was read at last night's meeting of the City Council in opposition to a petition which is said to be in course of circulation in favour of the opening of Belfast-street, at the southern side of Sussex-square. The writer's ground of objection was that the opening of the street was supposed to be designed for the benefit of Messrs Stewart & Co., and as Corporation men were formerly employed in metalling and draining the street, it could not be considered a private street. The buildings were, he said, already too much crowded together for the health of the residents, and the locality had always been regarded as a fever bed. He protested against any monopoly being given to a few people to the detriment of the public interest. As the petition has not yet been received by the Council, no action was taken in the matter

30 year old PUBLIC ACTUARY - New Zealander For S.A. Post
May Later Become Statistician Also . After having spent four months, during which it advertised throughout the British Empire, in a search for a qualified successor to Mr O. H. Gawler (former Public Actuary, the Government yesterday appointed Mr Andrew Ward Bowden, of Wellington New Zealand, to the position, at a salary of £720 a year. Mr Bowden, who is only 30 years of age, will leave New Zealand almost immediately to take up his new duties. The appointment of Mr Bowden, who, despite his youth, has had considerable experience in actuarial and statistical work for the New Zealand Government, is fraught with special significance in view of the strong possibility of the actuarial and statistical departments in this State being merged. This system obtains in Victoria, and it was to fill the dual position in that State that Mr Gawler resigned his position in South Australia. The post of Public Actuary in Adelaide has been vacant since the beginning of this year, and the Government Statist (Mr Johnston) will reach the retiring age of 65 in September. Mr Bowden may not by then have acquainted himself sufficiently with local matters to be able to take over the dual position, and it is possible that Mr. Johnston's services may be extended, but it is known that the Government desires to merge the departments, if possible, in the interests of economy. The Chief Secretary (Mr Ritchie) said yesterday that the Government would consider the position when the time came. "The policy of the Government," he said, "is to economise wherever possible without reducing efficiency. The new Public Actuary is qualified in statistical work, and is capable of taking charge of that department. Such a move would result in a substantial overhead saving, and would enable the work to be carried on with no loss of effectiveness.' Backed by the strong recommendation of Mr Gawler and of administrative heads of New Zealand Government actuarial departments, Mr Bowden's application for the South Australian position was successful among several which the Government received, including one from England. Prom 1923 to 1927 Mr Bowden served on the actuarial staff of the New Zealand Government life insurance department, where he gained much experience of the routine work of valuation and general actuarial work. Since 1927 be has been employed in the Government Actuary's Department at Wellington, being junior only to the Government Actuary, under whom he gained wide knowledge of financial and statistical work. All Friendly Societies registered in New Zealand are valued and advised by the Government Actuary, whose duties cover also examination of pension and superannuation funds. Mr Bowden is an associate of the Institute of Actuaries (London) and has passed Part IV, Section B of the Fellowship Degree, which relates to pension funds social insurance and general statistics. He is at present taking Section A, the passing of which will complete the examination

- From reverse of photo: The ford was used for all traffic servicing those properties on the east bank of the Whareama from Ica Station south. It was discontinued and its approaches fell into disrepair when the concrete 'Waiteko Bridge' was completed and opened in 1929. Ica wool was stored in the 'Brown House' on the western bank then taken by lorry to Masterton and railed to Wellington.

Henry's father, William Young Dennett, was a Hotel Keeper and an Auctioneer in Hastings. He was also the Mayor of HASTINGS 1899-1906
... taken from that link (visit for a photo of him): Mr. William Young Dennett first entered the Hastings Borough Council in the year 1898, in the following year was elected Mayor, and has five times since occupied the civic chair. He was born in Hobart, Tasmania on the 4th of October, 1845, and spent some years on the Victorian gold-fields. In the early sixties he took part in the rush to the Otago diggings, and, later, joined the A troop of the Colonial Defence Force, under Captain Lassier, and proceeded to Hawke's Bay, where he was stationed at Peka Peka, and other military posts. Soon afterwards Mr. Dennett enlisted in the Napier militia, saw active service at Omaranui, and in other engagements, and for some years subsequently was a member of the Napier Rifles. He was afterwards engaged in survey work on the coast between Napier and Gisborne, and then started a cab service between Napier and the Spit. He then took over, the Central Hotel in Napier, and was afterwards manager of the Masonic Hotel. He subsequently engaged in hotel-keeping at Havelock North, and, later, in Hastings, where he built the Albert Hotel, and then conducted the Carlton Club Hotel. Mr. Dennett finally established himself as an auctioneer, financial, insurance, land, and general commission agent, and has been appointed agent for the State Fire Insurance, and is Registrar of Electors. He is a life Governor of the Napier Hospital, has been for many years a member of the Hawke's Bay United Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, a director of the Hawke's Bay and Star-Bowkett Building Societies, a trustee of various Friendly Societies, a trustee of the Hastings Technical School, and a staunch supporter of the Church of the Sacred Heart. Otago Daily Times, 3 September 1917 ... A serious accident befell a young married man named William Dennett whilst out for a spin on a motor cycle (states the Gisborne Times). In the dip near Ormond his machine swerved and he was thrown into a ditch on the side of the road. The young man was rendered unconscious and he was removed to the Ormond Hotel. A doctor found that he was suffering very severely from shock and, in addition, had lost the use of his lower limbs. The extent of his injuries to his back was not yet known, but a good deal of internal haemorrhage was manifest

Evening Post, 18 January 1915 ... SERIOUS MOTOR ACCIDENT GISBORNE, 17th January a serious motor-car accident occurred about 11 o'clock on Saturday night at Taruheru, a few chains beyond the western boundary of the borough. It appears that Mrs H. Dennett and her two daughters, Ruby aged 15 and Tiny aged 8, were alighting from Mr H. Bennie's bus, in which they had travelled from town. They had alighted from the bus and Mrs Dennett was paying the driver. The girls started to cross the road and did not notice the approaching car, driven by August Zenker, which came along and ran down Ruby Dennett. The unfortunate young lady was dragged some distance under the car, which swerved into the fence. Medical aid was summoned, and the girl was removed to a private hospital. She is in a precarious condition, and it is feared that she has sustained serious internal injuries
- Ruby had a son on 19 November 1916, Leo Howard 'Lal' Dennett (1916-1999). I believe he was brought up as a child of Hilda's (see her headstone photo below)

* the TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH was erected in 1877 and the Rev. William Evans became pastor. Under his care the congregation made steady progress until 1896, when he retired from active duty and accepted the position of pastor emeritus. Mr. Evans was succeeded by the Rev. Thomas Scott, M.A., who resigned in 1899 owing to ill-health. Some time ago a larger church was built to meet the requirements of the congregation, which is now (1901) ministered to by the Rev. John Erwin
- The Rev. John Erwin, B.A., Minister of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Cambridge, was born in Belfast, Ireland. He was educated at Queen's College, Belfast, and at the Royal University of Ireland, where he graduated. Mr. Erwin was ordained in Ireland in 1899, and appointed to his present charge on the 20th of December in the same year
- The Rev. W. Evans, a retired Presbyterian Minister, was born in 1817, in Pembroke, Wales, and was ordained to the ministry in 1840. He was called to Chester, and was for twenty-five years pastor of City Road Presbyterian Church. For five years he was appointed to officiate at Hoylake, a watering place near Liverpool, where he raised a new church and large congregation. In 1877 he came to Auckland, and was called to the pastorate of Trinity Church, Cambridge, from which he retired in 1896 (see link at photo below for more)

... Mr GEORGE JACQUE HALLY, Cordial and Aerated Water Manufacturer, and Fruit Evaporator, Brewery Street, Cambridge. Private residence, Alpha Street. Mr. Hally was born in 1837 at Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland. His father was a woollen manufacturer, and Mr. Hally gained experience of wool sorting in connection with that business. In 1862 he landed in Auckland by the ship ?Hanover,? and was drafted into the Auckland Militia and served with his corps through the Waikato campaign. Subsequently he purchased 100 acres of land between Taupiri and Rangiriri, where he resided for about two years. In 1868 he removed to the Thames, where he had two years' experience in goldmining. He returned to the Waikato in 1870, and settled in Cambridge, where he built the brewery which he worked for a number of years in conjunction with his two brothers. Since 1895 Mr. Hally has carried on business as a cordial manufacturer and fruit evaporator. He was married, in 1887, to a daughter of the late Mr. J.
