The WILKES Family + Peeress Town, Timaru
A journal written for Honeymeade who is looking for her ancestors. On 23 June 2019 she wrote .. Albert & Ann Wilkes and family were sent to Waimate after landing in 1874 off the 'Peeress'. I am a descendant of their second daughter Karen who at some stage changed her name to Carey Ann. She married in Timaru to Edward Newton. My mothers grandparents. Where and for whom did Albert work? ..
* I have first written about the 'Peeress' and the immigrants to Timaru. This will give Honeymeade and everyone else who had ancestors on the 'Peeress', an insight of what their ancestors arrived to, their living conditions etc.
* beneath that I have Albert & Ann Wilkes, their children, grandchildren and lives.
The PEERESS London to Lyttelton
PEERESS TOWN got its name from the ship 'Peeress' which sailed into Lyttelton 23 July 1874, then transported the immigrants destined for Timaru, on the steamers 'Comerang' and 'Wellington'. Living conditions were pretty horrendous, as noted below and those that were able, soon left the area to find better living accommodation.
Timaru Herald, 24 July 1874
.. The Ship Peeress, from London, Captain Miller, with 300 immigrants (164 statute adults) on board for Timaru, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday, 118 days out from Gravesend. Four births occurred during the voyage and six deaths. The telegram from which we obtain this information says that the passengers will be forwarded to Timaru today (Friday) by the Comerang, so that the vessel will not come to this port, as anticipated. The Immigration Officer, Mr LeCren, received a telegram yesterday, stating that Mr March, the Chief Immigration officer, had started for the South to assist in providing accommodation, and in distributing the immigrants and that he would be in Geraldine to-day. An advertisement appears in another column, intimating that persons desirous of obtaining labor will find immigrants open for engagement, after Monday next, at the barracks at Timaru, Temuka, Geraldine and Waimate.
Timaru Herald, 27 July 1874
.. The roadstead presented an unusual lively appearance on Saturday morning last, three steamers arriving pretty nearly together and another riding at anchor at the time. The one at anchor was the s.s.Maori, which arrived on Friday morning from Lyttelton with a large cargo, but owing to the heavy break on shore no communication was affected and she moved out to an anchorage about two miles from the land. The vessels which arrived on the following day were the s.s.Claud Hamilton from Lyttelton, with a small cargo on board for this port and the s.s.Wellington and s.s.Comerang, with the immigrants by the Peeress.
.. On the Wellington there were 35 families, 35 single men and 14 single women; and on the Comerang 16 families, 4 single men and 8 single women; also 5 immigrants from the Eastern Monarch.
.. The sea was, if anything, more boisterous than on the previous day and as there was no possibility of any communication being made with the shore, the vessels cruised about in the roadstead for a few hours. Ultimately the Wellington and Comerang dropped anchors for the night near the Maori and at about noon, after transferring two or three passengers to the Wellington, the Claud Hamilton proceeded on her voyage southwards. The passing of another night on board the steamers was not a pleasant prospect for the immigrants, but by a little scheming very fair accommodation was afforded.
.. The Comerang, as is well known, is well adapted for the conveyance of passengers and on the Wellington good shift was made by giving the married and single women the cabin and the married and single men the steerage.
Early yesterday morning, the sea being pretty favorable for landing, the Comerang and Wellington came to an inner anchorage and steam having been got up at the Landing Services, a cargo boat was despatched from each Service at about half-past seven, to take the immigrants and their luggage, the debarkation being concluded at about 11 o'clock.
.. A large number of persons assembled on the beach to witness the landing, some being friends or relatives of the immigrants. The immigrants, upon landing, were conveyed to the quarters provided for them, the families to the drill-shed on LeCren's Terrace, the single women to the barracks in North street and the single men to the old barracks on the Main road. The Wellington, after parting with her passengers, steamed away for DUnedin
Timaru Herald, 27 July 1874
THE PEERESS' IMMIGRANTS
.. Rarely has there been seen a larger number of persons on the beach at Timaru, than assembled there yesterday morning, to witness the debarkation of the immigrants by the Peeress, from the steamers Wellington and Comerang. A good many of the townspeople turned out and there were also present several people from the country, who had relations or friends among the immigrants.
.. A boat was despatched from the Landing and Shipping Company's Service and another from the Government Service at about half past seven in the morning and by eleven all of the immigrants were ashore, two boats being launched by the former service and one by the latter.
.. Altogether there were landed 51 families equal to 165 adults, 39 single men and 22 single women by the Peeress and five immigrants by the Eastern Monarch. Mr Marshman came down in one of the steamers in charge of the immigrants.
.. Upon landing, the immigrants were conveyed to the quarters set apart for them. The single girls were placed in the barracks in North Street, the single men in the old barracks on the Main road and the families in the drill shed on LeCren's terrace. The single women and men were very well provided for, but the families, as regarded accommodation, fared somewhat roughly in their quarters. A table with forms each side extended along the centre of the room for convenience at meals and two stoves were placed on one corner of the immigrants were obliged to camp for the night on the open floor, the room for cooking, but no sleeping accommodation was provided and the only partitions being one here and there that they erected themselves during the afternoon.
.. The single men look a very useful lot and the single women appear healthy, but the whole of the immigrants have a dingy look, a look however, that only requires a little good water and proper food to remove. They all speak highly of the officers of the ship and of the way in which they were treated on the passage, but stated that not being used to the ship's food, it had a bad effect on them. A number of the immigrants will be forwarded to the various barracks in the outlying districts today.
Timaru Herald, 27 July 1874
... as a rule the man who is not a bona fide laborer, thinks that he is and under this delusion fancies himself quite on a par as regard wages, with the thoroughly well-tried and well-seasoned colonial. He asks 8s per diem, his actual value being 5s and a refusal on the part of the employer causes the applicant to curse the country and vow he would sooner starve than take less than one shilling the hour. New arrivals are generally very conceited of the abilities, very ignorant of the ways of the country and very determined in the matter of wages ... more at link
Timaru Herald, 10 Aug 1874
Several of the newly arrived immigrants ex Peeress, began on Thursday last, the erection of huts on the Government reserve at Patiti Point. The men appear gratified with the help, little as it is, afforded by the Government towards the building of the cottages and naturally enough desire to quit with their families the barracks where they are so inconveniently crowded
Timaru Herald, 1 Jan 1878
.. In the course of some remarks which we made recently regarding the cottages occupied by immigrants on the Government reserves, we ventured a suggestion that the present tenants should be offered an opportunity of acquiring a freehold under certain conditions. We have since made further inquiries into this subject and find that somewhat cogent reasons are advanced for not applying the proposed course of action at least to Peeress Town. The land on which that hamlet stands was originally chosen with great care for a quarantine ground, for which it is admirably suited, by both position and extent.
.. There is no knowing how soon it may be required for its proper purpose and it would manifestly be unwise in the extreme, to alienate any portion of it. It is not by any means too large; but, even supposing it contained a greater area than is ever likely to be needed for quarantine buildings, the proximity of a crowded village in immediate contiguity to the barracks, would render the isolation of the sick practically impossible.
If, however, it is inexpedient to give the people of Peeress Town a permanent tenure of their habitations, on account of the land being part of a quarantine reserve, it is equally injudicious to afford them a prolonged domicile there. In short, if they are not to be allowed to buy their places, the sooner they are removed altogether the better.
.. The accounts which we have received of most of them are not such as to make this course appear in any respect an unmerited hardship. In the first place, it seems to us most unreasonable that able-bodied men should be enabled by favor to the Government to live free of rent and rates, while equally deserving people living just across the road, have to pay both. There is obviously no sense in such a system and it ought never to have been allowed to come into existence.
.. When we speak of the Peeress Town tenants living rent free, we are quite aware that a nominal rent of a shilling a week is payable by them. That, however, is virtually no rent at all, the ruling rate of rent of private property being considered; and yet, in a great many cases, even the shilling a week is not paid.
.. We believe that the Immigration Officer has actually sued for rent in one or two instances and though, of course, he got judgment, has never been able to get the money to this day. Then again, the sanitary condition of the place affords a strong ground for not maintaining the present occupation of it a day longer than is necessary.
.. Peeress Town is neither in the Borough of Timaru, nor in the Levels Road District, so that it is literally outside of any local control whatever. We have reason to believe that many of the tenements there are in an extremely filthy state; that there is no drainage at all and that the refuse and sewage of the whole village has simply been allowed to permeate the soil, ever since the first immigrants took up their abode in it.
.. We need scarcely say what the consequences of this neglect of ordinary sanitary precautions are likely to be. Not only is the neighbourhood already liable to suffer at any time from an outbreak of malignant fever, but it will not be suitable for habitation for a considerable time to come, even though cleanly habits may be observed for the future.
.. It seems then that Peeress Town has been permitted to drift, both morally and physically, into a highly objectionable condition - a condition not compatible with justice or safety to the rest of the community. The Government are solely responsible for this anomalous state of things; and on them alone devolves the task of remedying it.
.. We recognise at once the difficulties which present themselves to removing the population from a spot where they may be deemed to be settle by a kind of left-handed tenure. We do not, however, at all go with those who say that, wrong and foolish as it may have been to allow any kind of right of occupation to grow up, it is impossible to turn these people out of their dwellings now.
.. We say that, if it is just and necessary and for the general good, that they should be turned out, there ought to be no hesitation in adopting that course. House room is both plentiful and cheap in Timaru just now and employment can readily be obtained at high wages; so that the present time seems particularly opportune for breaking up the establishment at Peeress Town.
.. There are, we understand, a few families or individuals, not being immigrants, who are supplied with a house there, avowedly as a benevolence. The position of these, must, of course, be taken into consideration and some arrangement must be made for their protection either at Peeress Town or elsewhere.
.. The rest of the inhabitants should be removed as soon as may be found practicable. It has been represented to us that this cannot be done, for the simple reason that the people will not go, unless compelled by force to do so. We do not think it at all likely though, that the authorities have any cause for anxiety on that score.
.. If reasonable notice to quit, say a month in advance, were given, we have no doubt that all the respectable cottagers would be found to have ensconced themselves in new homes, before the end of that period. The case of those who should persist in remaining, in defiance of everybody, could then be easily met by pulling down all the cottages and removing the debris.
.. This will have to be done sooner or later, because it will never do to have a collection of huts standing empty on the outskirts of the town, the haunt of prowlers and all bad characters. It will be necessary too to make a clean sweep before the reserve can be restored to a wholesome state. We would suggest therefore that the course we have indicated should be recommended to the Government by the municipal body and the Immigration Officer. As soon as it have been completely carried out, the quarantine reserve should be completely fenced and planted and temporarily incorporated with the Domain; thus furnishing a picturesque feature to the town and supplying the public with an additional recreation ground. A very thrifling display of activity on the part of the local authorities would put all these improvements in train and we hope to see the requisite effort made without delay.
Timaru Herald, 22 Dec 1882
We are informed on good authority that the Government have determined to cause the present residents on the quarantine and fortification reserve to remove to other quarters and to have the cottages they occupy razed to the ground. "Peeress Town" is picturesque from a distance, but the existence of such a set of shanties close to a town like Timaru is an anomaly that has called for removal for some time.
Timaru Herald, 24 Aug 1883
.. The collection of sod cabins which have collectively borne the name of Peeress Town for so many years past, will soon no longer exist and the sooner they are destroyed the better for the moral tone of the town.
.. Mr March, Immigration Officer, has given instructions to raze to the ground all the cabins at present unoccupied and to deal similarly with the others as soon as they become unoccupied. The land will then be sown down in English grass. Peeress Town is a suburb close to Patiti Point and has from time to time afforded shelter to some of the worst characters that ever infested Timaru.
Timaru Herald, 13 July 1886
PEERESS TOWN The following report has been made on the above township by Mr March, Immigration officer. Mr March visited the township about a fortnight ago and has made the report at the instance of the Minister for Lands. The report is as follows:- "I inspected Peeress Town on June 17th. A number of the cottages have been removed eighteen families still remain there; they appear to be quiet, respectable people. I made private enquiries, through the police and could not find any serious complaint against any of them. The only fault the officer who collects the rent has to find is that some of the occupiers are in a position to pay and will not do so. As we stated in a previous memorandum, I am of opinion that (so far as the Immigration Department is concerned) these cottages have done their duty. It would seem almost a pity, however, in the present depressed state of the labour market, to pull them all down, as several of them have been made comfortable little homes. I found also that of the eighteen families, five are in receipt aid. In one case the husband is in the lunatic asylum. There cannot be a doubt, therefore, that if these cottages were all removed the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board would be called on to expend a considerable sum of money in rents. The reserve on which these cottages is erected is a reserve for military defence and may be required at any time. I mention this because I understand both the Borough Council of Timaru and the South Canterbury Charitable Aid Board are anxious to obtain this reserve. I had an interview with the mayor of Timaru who is also chairman of the Charitable Aid Board and gathered from him that the board would wish the cottages to remain as they are, on condition that the tenants who can pay their rents should do so and that the board should be allowed the use of these cottages which are at present occupied by charitable aid cases. As I ascertained that several of the occupiers were in a position to pay the rent owing, I gave them one month's notice to do so and also informed them that they must now find other quarters.

★ ALBERT WILKES (1841-1882)
was born in Tysoe, Warwickshire to John Wilkes (1801-1892) & Eliza Hancox (1810-1891)
NOTES on Albert
* Albert's mother Eliza, married George Soden (1806-1888) on 30 July 1827.
They had at least 4 children:
1831 - Francis William Soden
1832 - John Soden
1834 - Lucy Matilda Soden
1836 - Thomas Soden
George Soden then deserted his family. There was a £1 reward out for information on his whereabouts. Eliza next bigamously married John Wilkes on 30 Jan 1837, listing herself as a widow. Husband George did not die until 1888 at Banbury and was found on the 1851, 1861 & 1881 census living at Hook Norton with his "housekeeper" Sarah Borsberry. Eliza lived to be 91 years old and was supposedly a "white witch"
* Albert had a younger sister named Caron Wilkes. This may be the correct spelling of his daughter Karen Ann's name. Maybe it was transcribed differently along the way (as they do). That would go a long way in explaining her use of the name Carey (nickname? Caron/'Carey').
* In the 1851 Census, Albert's parents & siblings were not spelled with an e in Wilks

When Frederick was 3 months old, Albert, Ann and their 6 children boarded The PEERESS to emigrate to New Zealand. It left London 29 March 1874 and sailed into Lyttelton on 23 July 1874 with around 300 passengers (see passenger list at link). Albert & Ann were told they would be settled in Timaru and they boarded a steamer, either the 'Wellington' or the 'Comerang' a couple of days later. The story is at top. FATAL ACCIDENT An accident which terminated fatally, occurred in Myross Bush yesterday at about 11 o'clock. Two men named Findlay and Albert Wilkes were engaged in bush-felling and had successfully felled a tree, when a neighbouring tree, which had been burnt at the roots some time since and beneath which Wilkes was standing, fell without any warning upon him, death being instantaneous, Deceased was 41 years of age, a married man and, we regret to chronicle, leaves a wife and nine children in very indigent circumstances. He had been a resident in Southland for about sixteen months and previous to that was employed similarly for over seven years in the Waimate bush

MAINTENANCE Arthur Williamson, of Myross Bush, an elderly man, was charged by his wife with neglecting to contribute towards her support. Mr Wade appeared for complainant; Mr Raymond for defendant. The information was dismissed by Mr Rawson, as it was shown that defendant, who has lived apart from his wife for some time past, has only earned on an average 10s per week of late and that complainant is in fairly comfortable circumstances
* Arthur Williamson died 4 Sep 1899 aged 68 and is buried in the same free plot as Albert (this is probably a common 'pauper' plot so would have a number of other burials)

A boat and crew in front of the Government Landing Services building. The Landing Service Building was unique to New Zealand, possibly to Australasia. Constructed of local volcanic basalt (aka bluestone) the building was European settlers’ solution to a lack of a natural harbour. Sailing ships would anchor off shore, smaller boats would be hauled to and from the ship by cable and unloaded inside the building.

DEATH of ANN Avison nee Shirley
Daily Telegraph, 5 Dec 1900
Quite a gloom has been thrown over Waipawa by the death of an old and much respected resident, Mrs Ann Avison, relict of the late Mr James Avison and elder sister of the late Mr T. Shirley, of Mount Wensley, Taradale. Mrs Avison was in robust health until a week ago, when she was suddenly attacked with pneumonia, complicated with heart and liver disease and she passed away quietly yesterday afternoon. The deceased lady, who had attained the age of 69 years, came to New Zealand with her father, mother and six brothers and sister, at the age of nine years(sic), in the ship Arab, which was the second ship to arrive in Wellington in 1841. She was therefore a colonist of nearly sixty years standing. Wellington in those days was but a collection of Maori huts, so the new colonists took up their residence first in a tent and then in a raupo house. They were shown much kindness by the natives, but also passed through many thrilling experiences and had many hair-breadth escapes. Mrs Avison's residence in Hawke's Bay dates bac nearly fifty years. Her husband was in business at Waipukurau and afterwards took up the estate at Waipawa known as Willow Bank, where they live for many years. On retiring from Willow Bank, Mr Avison built a villa residence near Waipawa township, where he died in 1894 and where Mrs Avison lived until her death.
Of the brothers and sisters who accompanied Mrs Avison to New Zealand only one sister is now living. Her father and mother both died at the age of 87.
The late Mrs Avison leaves a family of five sons and daughters and numerous grandchildren, one of whom is married. She was always ready and willing to assist in any good work. She was a member of the Gleaner's Union and exerted herself largely in any missionary effort. She will be missed and deeply mourned by a large circle of friends, who will long remember her goodness of heart, her unvarying kindness, her goodwill to all, her generosity and love. She will be interred in St Peter's cemetery on Thursday afternoon
JOHN Avison died 12 June 1934 aged 69
MARTHA Avison died 21 Oct 1946 aged 75

Street Assault in Fremantle 1933 - Herb Hawkins & Les Turner
Fremantle Advocate, 9 Feb 1933
STREET ASSAULT - Herb Hawkins v. Les Turner
AFTERMATH of MATRIMONIAL TANGLE
Herbert Hawkins, represented by Mr F. W. Martin, proceeded against Leslie Turner, for unlawful assault, in the Fremantle Police Court, during last week-end, when Messrs H. J. Craig, R.M., and F. Instone, J.P., were on the Bench. Mr. W. Slattery appeared for Turner.
Hawkins, sworn, said he was in Henry-street on January 25, at about 3.15 p.m., when Turner came out of the doorway of a bag merchants. Hawkins said he was accompanied by two men. Turner called Hawkins a bad name and Hawkins replied that Turner had done him enough injury in his home as it was through him that his wife would not come back to her five children. "Turner replied that my wife would never return to me," said Hawkins, "and that he was not afraid of lawyers letters or the police." Hawkins said Turner struck him a blow on the chest, without provocation. Hawkins tried to get away from him but he followed him across the road hitting him as they crossed. "He hit me on the nose and between the eyes," complained Hawkins, "and when I fell over he went to attack me while I was down and one of of the men called out, 'don't hit a man while he is down.' I got up and made off down the street and he called out 'If you want more you can have it.' I reported the the matter to Constable Potter and showed him the marks made by Turner where he hit me.
To Mr Slattery, Hawkins said "Turner was at McClusky's delivering bags.
Mr Slattery: What were you doing in Henry-street?
Hawkins: I was going down to the treasury in Phillimore-street.
Mr Slattery: Why didn't you go the shortest way from Uglieland, which would have been along Phillmore street?
Hawkins: I went for a walk.
Mr Slattery: Did you ask Arthur Edward Douglas to come with you and see you clean Turner up?
Hawkins: No, I didn't.
Mr Slattery: Did you have a private detective with you?
Hawkins: No.
Mr Slattery: Will you swear he was not there?
Hawkins: He was not there under my instructions.
Mr Slattery: But he had been working for you ?
Hawkins: Yes, but before that time.
Mr Slattery: You have been to McClusky about Turner?
Hawkins: Yes, I wanted him to help me get my wife back to my five children.
Mr Slattery: Didn't you wait outside McClusky's for Turner to come out?
Hawkins: I did not. He came out as we were passing.
Mr Slattery: Didn't you say to Turner when you met him 'now I've
got you I'm going to give you a good hiding?
Hawkins: No, I did not.
Mr Slattery: Didn't you ask Douglas to go with you to clean Turner up and didn't Douglas say he would come but he wouldn't help you?
Hawkins: No.
Mr Slattery: I suppose you just asked Douglas to go for a walk?
Hawkins: I did not
Mr Slattery: Didn't you hit Turner?
Hawkins: After the fourth blow I tried to defend myself. I wasn't going to stand any more blows.
Mr Slattery: You have a grudge against Turner?
Hawkins: Yes, I have. He did me an injury coming into my home and getting my wife to leave me and our five children. Every time he comes near me he calls me a mongrel and other bad names. I saw you once to get you to write to Turner to try and get him to let my wife come home.
Arthur Edward Douglas said he was with Hawkins and Bevil Morris on the date in question. He saw Turner and Hawkins meet in front of McClusky's and he heard them muttering but did not hear what was said. He walked away a bit then turned around when he had got a yard or so away and saw them hitting at one another. Hawkins was hit a couple of times when he fell on to the road.
"I don't know whether he was going to put the boots in or not," said witness, "but a bystander called out don't put the boots in.' I called out myself a couple of times, but apparently they did not hear me and I let them box on. Hawkins was trying to get away and Turner told him his wife would never come home to him anyway."
Another witness gave evidence on similar lines, adding that Turner's face was bleeding.
Mr Slattery: Who started the fight?
Witness: It is hard to say; the first thing I saw was Turner pushing Hawkins away. I was about 40 yards away then.
Constable Potter stated that Hawkins made a complaint at the police station regarding the assault by Turner on January 25.
Leslie Turner, sworn, said he went into McClusky's on January 25 to deliver some bags. He came out of the door to see Hawkins standing there with his hands on his hips looking at him.
I pushed past him,' said Turner, and he said a man ought to give you damn good hiding and then he struck at me. I retaliated and we finished up on the other side of the street. Later Douglas came up to me and said 'I hope you've nothing against me, I've got nothing against you. Hawkins asked me to come down and give him a hand.
Defendant said there had been ill-feeling between himself and Hawkins for some time, Hawkins had been going around to his customers trying to do him an injury.
Mr Martin: Douglas denies having told you he was asked to come down to see you cleaned up.
Turner: He did say it. He is telling a lie. He told me afterwards that he had to study his bread and butter as he was working with Hawkins.
Mr Martin: You have received letters from me regarding Hawkins and his wife. Did you remark to Hawkins that you were not afraid of lawyers letters or the police.
Turner: No, I did not.
Mr Martin: As a matter of fact the women police have been at your mother's place with regard to Hawkins' wife, who is living there?"
Turner: yes.
Mr Martin: You know that Hawkins has done things in an orderly way. I've written to your mother, yourself and his wife.
Turner: Yes.
Mr Craig: What is the reason for the grudge Hawkins has against you?
Turner: He accuses me of being responsible for his wife leaving him.
Mr Craig: Where is his wife?
Turner: Living at my place with my mother and working for her living.
Mr Slattery held that the offence was not proved. He said that Douglas did not hear any argument, although he was only four feet away. He would not say who was the aggressor. Turner was heard to say to Hawkins 'You can hit me if you like' If Turner had been the aggressor they would have said so.
Mr Slattery asked the Bench to take notice of the fact that Hawkins went a roundabout way to the Treasury instead of taking the nearest route.
"On the evidence" concluded Mr Slattery, "I submit that Turner is entitled to the benefit of the doubt. Hawkins' sworn witness said that Hawkins stopped."
The Bench did not waste much time in coming to a decision.Turner was convicted and fined £2 with £3/16/0 costs.
William Aitken & Elizabeth Towers - Otago
written for DrewMc who wrote on 2019-05-25 ..
Pearl Challis was my great Aunt and lived in Lumsden, NZ. Her father William Aitken, we think remarried after his first wife died, in 1910. Her maiden name was Aitken, she was often called Pearlie. This was a "nickname". Her Father, was William Aitken, born about 1871. William Aitken, married Elizabeth Towers, about 1894 in Dunedin. Elizabeth was born about 1873, in England and died on the 31st Mar, 1910 in Dunedin. Elizabeth Towers was the daughter of; William Arbuckle Towers, who was born about 1850. He died about 1889, aged about 39. Her mother was Ann Elizabeth (Ashwell) Towers, who was born about 1855. Pearl, was born on or around 1913 in Lumsden. We don't yet have conclusive proof, that Elizabeth was her actual mother, as the registration of a birth, had to be done within 6 weeks, of a child being born. However as Elizabeth had just died, this small formality may have been overlooked, after her death.
★ sorry Drew, you have two families mixed up. Pearl Jessie Gaines 'Pearlie' Aitken was born 19 Oct 1913 to William Aitken and Elizabeth Ann Gaines (1874-1936) not Elizabeth Towers (1873-1910). Pearl married Alfred Challis (1911-1989) in 1932. They died within 3 months of each other in Invercargill. Other children were born to William Aitken & Elizabeth Ann Gaines. One brother of Pearl's was George Ruben Aitken (1902-1985). Registered as George Thomas Mark Ruben Aitken, he used only George Ruben Aitken. You need to follow that line Drew ★

The West Australian, 1 Feb 1912
CORONER'S INQUEST - SWAMP TRAGEDY. The adjourned inquest concerning the death of Thomas Aitken, who shot himself at Cloverdale on January 17, was concluded before Mr W. H. McCormack, J.P. and a jury yesterday. Alexander Aitken, a brother of the deceased said he was working on a garden property with his brother on the day in question. Early in the morning witness went out to work, but hearing the report of a firearm he returned to the house and discovered the deceased on the floor with his brains blown out. Prior to January 17, Aitken appeared to be despondent and was unable to sleep.
Dr Blanchard, in his medical testimony, said the top of the deceased's head was blown completely off. He was called to the house directly after the affair and found a gun lying across Aitken's legs. He concluded death was due to a gunshot wound and was instantaneous.
Letters put in by the police, one of which was written by the deceased the day prior to his death, indicated a troubled and disappointed mind in connection with financial affairs. One passage read: "What form of lunacy led me to such a God-forsaken place as this, or to think that I could make a success of it."
The circumstances were pathetic, as it appeared that Aitken had taken up 90 acres of swamp land close to Welshpool, but 31 miles from the nearest road. The approach was all the way through sand and in the second note the deceased made reference to "swamp lunacy." The letters also stated that sufficient money would be left behind, he thought, to meet his liabilities. From information in the hands of the police, probably between £930 and £1,000 will remain after all liabilities have been met.
The jury decided that Aitken came to his death as the result of a gunshot wound, self inflicted, whilst temporarily insane.

The marriage was celebrated on Saturday evening at the Knox Presbyterian Church, Bealey avenue, Christchurch, of Belle Darling, younger daughter of Captain and Mrs C. M. Renaut, of Papanui and Leslie Milner Aitken, of Christchurch, son of Mr W. Aitken, Dunedin. The Rev T. W. Armour officiated. The bride, who was escorted by her father, was wearing a lovely frock of cream and gold brocade, Designed on long slender-fitting lines, the frock was enhanced by its simplicity. The sleeves were close-fitting to the wrists and from knee-height the skirt fell in full flares to the instep. A tiny spray of orange blossom was placed on one shoulder. Her veil of tulle was held by a coronet of pearls, with a strand of orange blossom buds across the back and she carried a sheaf of lilies. Mr R. Tudor Roberts, of Dunedin, attended her sister as matron of honour. She wore an attractive ensemble of grey and violet. the frock of dove grey crepe was finished with a high-collared cape. On her hair she wore a circlet of purple pansies and carried a posy of violets. Mr Trevor Ross, of Christchurch, was best man.
After the ceremony a reception was held at Warner's Hotel. Mrs Renaut received her guests wearing a smart frock of beige georgette and lace, under a brown faced cloth coat with a collar of musquash. A spray of orange-shaded flowers added a touch of colour. Her hat was of brown felt. Mr and Mrs Aitken left later for the North Island, the bride wearing a smart nigger brown wool crepe de chine frock with touches of beige at wrists and neck, a brown cloth coat and a becoming hat of beige fur felt.

Evening Star, 28 March 1934 AITKEN - On March 23 1934, London, Harry Arthur Ashwell, dearly beloved son of Wm. Aitken, 1 Norwood street, Dunedin.
OBITUARY of Harry Arthur Ashwell Aitken. Harry was born at Dunedin, New Zealand, on November 30th, 1905. He studied at Otago University 1924-7 and graduated M.Sc. with honours in Chemistry. After holding a post-graduate bursary and working on the essential oils of Podocarpus species he obtained in 1929 a National Research scholarship of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research; during its tenure he investigated the sulphur in organic and inorganic combination in pasture grasses. From 1930 to 1932 he was chemist to the Goitre and Cancer Research Department of the Otago University Medical School and with C. E. Hercus and others, published papers on iodine in goitre, a paper with A. M. Begg on tumour regression and, by himself, papers on a continuous dialyser and on the determination of iodine in blood and butter. In 1933 Aitken was granted a University Free passage for research in this country, where he at first continued his work on sulphur in grasses in the laboratory of Prof. G. Barger and then migrated to London to take the Institute of Chemistry Fellowship examination, which he passed. Unfortunately, application to study had undermined a somewhat delicate constitution, leading to an illness from which he died in London on March 23rd 1934. Aitken was of a shy and retiring disposition and hardly became known to British biochemists as he deserved to be.
Otago Daily Times, 28 March 1934
Mr Harry A. Aitken The friends of Mr Harry A. Aitken will learn with regret of his death in London on March 23, news of which was received in Dunedin by cablegram yesterday. Mr Aitken was a brilliant student at the Otago Boys' High School, from which he won a junior University scholarship in 1923, a distinguished graduate of the University of Otago and acted for some time as chemist in connection with cancer research. He passed the examination for F.I.C. only a few months ago. The deceased was a younger brother of Dr. A. C. Aitken, a distinguished mathematician on the staff of the University of Edinburgh and also of Mr L. M. Aitken, of the sub-editorial staff of the Christchurch 'Press'.

William Aitken & Elizabeth Towers - Otago
written for DrewMc who wrote on 2019-05-25 ..
Pearl Challis was my great Aunt and lived in Lumsden, NZ. Her father William Aitken, we think remarried after his first wife, (nee Elizabeth Towers) died, in 1910. Her maiden name was Aitken, she was often called Pearlie. Her Father, was William Aitken, born about 1871. William Aitken, married Elizabeth Towers, about 1894 in Dunedin. Elizabeth was born about 1873, in England and died on the 31st Mar, 1910 in Dunedin. We don't yet have conclusive proof, that Elizabeth was her actual mother, as the registration of a birth, had to be done within 6 weeks, of a child being born. However as Elizabeth had just died, this small formality may have been overlooked, after her death. William Aitken may also have married again.

Troopship 'AYRSHIRE' into Lyttelton 1919
RETURNING HOME ~ AYRSHIRE'S DRAFT
Expected at Lyttelton 19 Sep 1919
The Ayrshire left Liverpool with 30 officers & 639 men on the passenger list, (but.. Alfred Curtis died before embarking & George McNicholl drowned at Panama. See both below)
Dominion, 20 Sep 1919 Ayrshire at Lyttelton. The Ayrshire from Home, with troops, arrived in the stream at Lyttelton at 10.20 to-night. The troops will disembark in the morning. She has on board a large English mail. There are 831 receptacles, 523 being bags of ordinary mails and 308 bags of parcels. It is probable that a special counter delivery will be made at the G.P.O. between 7.30pm and 8.30pm of all correspondence usually delivered by letter-carriers. There are 452 details for the North island and 219 for the South Island. This will mean a delay of from one to two days in the return of the North island troops to their homes, a delay which could easily have been obviated by making Wellington the vessel's first port of call.
* The Auckland portion of 184 men, reached home by the steamer Monowai 6 days later, on 26 Sep 1919 and were welcomed on the wharf by a large crowd
* In Nov 1919 several members of the crew were charged with embezzling the ship stores
* The Ayrshire left Wellington to return to London, via Panama, on 6 Dec 1919

PYCROFT marriages New Zealand 1872-1952
. NOTE . Although most of these folk & their stories have been carefully researched, some dates may be estimated going by recorded age at death, ship list ages are always inaccurate so treat with caution, some children may be missing or typos may have crept in. So, as always, treat the following as a guide only to doing your own research
. . PROLOGUE . .
William Henry 'James' Pycroft (1839-1907)
* son of John Pycroft (1792-1845) & Mary Jane Marshall (1809-1891).
He married Rebecca Cate (1844-1919) on 21 Oct 1860 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England
* daughter of Ezekiel William Cate & Charlotte Amelia Westbrook.
They had 8 children in England then emigrated to New Zealand on the 'Waitangi,' with their 7 surviving children, arriving in Lyttelton 13 Oct 1878.
. James' sister, Mary Jane Pycroft (1837-1901), married Rebecca's brother, William George Cate (1840-1918) 15 Nov 1857 in Hampshire. They had 9 children. Mary, husband William & their 7 surviving children had arrived into Lyttelton 9 months before them, on 9 Jan 1878, on the Hereford. Mary was 4 months pregnant on landing and gave birth to son Moses Frank Cate, in Christchurch in June.

* Arthur - Arthur Thomas Pycroft, Ornithologist and book collector, was born in Auckland. His parents were Henry Thomas Pycroft & Sarah Whiteway Crockwell Alderton. His paternal grandfather was Thomas Pycroft (1807-1892) British administrator and civil servant who served as a member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1862 to 1867. He was the elder brother of British writer James Pycroft, cricketer & writer, who was offered a "writership" by the President of the Board of Control of the British East India Company.
Arthur worked for the NZ Railways Department and became a senior manager, but he retired young after receiving a large inheritance. This gave him more time for his real passion as a naturalist and ornithologist. He organised expeditions, mostly to islands off the coast of the North Island, with a focus on birds and plants. He grew rare plants at his large property in the Auckland suburb of Saint Heliers. Another of his interests was collecting rare books. When his library was put up for sale 40 years after his death, it was dubbed the "last great private library" in New Zealand.
* Minna - was born 20 April 1882. She was a New Zealand painter and scientific illustrator. Her father, James Duncan Harris (1853-1922), was the Railway Workshops Manager at Hillside, Dunedin, manager of the Taranaki section, transferred to the management of the Bay of Islands section and was district manager for the railways at Whangarei. Her mother was Emma Lansley Waller (1856-1925), both buried Purewa. Minna was a second cousin to Noël Brooks Livingston, a Jamaican politician, judge, author and genealogist (his maternal grandparents - Francis & Eleanor Harris - were Minna's paternal grandparents).

The extra weight added to the pull of the struggling fish, proved too much for the boat, which turned on her side, spilling the fish and the fishermen into waist-deep water. Still hanging on grimly to his prize, Mr Pycroft managed to get the fish into the swamped boar. His brother-in-law righted her and they baled her out and brought home their catch. Local residents, until presented with the proof, were unanimous in declaring the episode to be the summer's best fish story.

married Hilmer James Christiansen (1907-1983) in 1932
. 27 May 1944, Prisoner Sentenced SUPREME COURT, Christchurch. Hilmer James Christiansen aged 36, a married man with two children, pleaded guilty to theft and forgery while in the employ of the Department of Agriculture at Timaru. "You got into difficulties and helped yourself to Government funds" said His Honor, Mr Justice Northcroft, "Then you gambled with bookmakers and then kept on in the hope of recouping your losses. It is certainly an unhappy and sordid story, but it is not an unusual one. In such cases it is necessary to impose a sentence of imprisonment as a deterrent to others". Christiansen, he declared, had aggravated his offence by what his Honour called 'a very skilful forgery'. On the forgery charge the prisoner was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour. The same term was imposed for the theft charge, the sentences to be cumulative. Until Christiansen was suspended this year form the department, he had served for 20 years in the South Island, the last four years being spent in Timaru. The peculations, which comprised £197 (May 2019 equivalent of $16,800), began only 12 months ago. When the prisoner was married in 1932 he was on a low-grade salary which, with cuts, was less than £4 weekly for a time ($340 in 2019). The motive responsible for his downfall had been debt.

married Johanna Mary Cook in 1902
Bay of Plenty Times, 25 June 1902
WEDDING This morning a very pretty wedding was solemnised at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church by the Rev Father Bloomfield between Mr Albert Lemon of Te Puke, youngest son of the late Mr George Lemon of this town and Miss Josephine Mary Cook, second daughter of Mr John Cook of Grey St., Tauranga. The church was prettily decorated for the occasion and was crowded with friends of both parties. The bride was attended by Miss Washer, of Te Puke, in a pale blue dress with hat to match, and by Miss Katie Cook, who wore a pretty cream silk costume, trimmed with lace, and hat to match. The bridegroom was supported by his brother, Mr John F. Lemon, of this town. The bride wore a handsome costume of cream lustre, trimmed with cream satin, with veil, and wreath of orange blossoms, the whole effect being most recherche and artistic and reflecting great credit on the taste and skill of her sister, Miss Margaret Cook, whose creation it was. After the ceremony the happy pair, amid an extra heavy shower of rice and similar tokens of good will, embarked on a coach drawn by four spanking greys with wedding favours in their headstalls, from Mr M. P. Stewart's stables, the ribbons being held by Mr G. Leggett, who drove them to the residence of the bride's father, where a large gathering of relatives and friends took place to partake of the wedding breakfast. Later in the day the bride and bridegroom took their departure for their new home at Te Puke, amid many expressions of good wishes for their future happiness and prosperity

Andrew Lemon
married Ellen Parr in 1855
note Possible? that the following article was this Andrew Lemon .. On the 22nd January 1866, as Mr Hebberly and Mr Beauchamp, surveyor, were surveying the coast in the Straits, on the north shore of the Middle Island, between George's Rocks and Lucky Point, they found the wreck of the missing schooner 'Sarah'. The whole of the vessel was there, but smashed to pieces. The clothes of the two unfortunate men, Andrew Lemon and Curly George, were strewed about the rocks, but all torn to pieces. A necktie was sent to Mrs Lemon, to be identified; but it was known by Mr Hebberly to be the one he usually wore. Mr Hebberly picked up a leaden pump and some bits, made of blue gum, and conveyed them to his place in Queen Charlotte's Sound, where they can be seen. Nothing was seen of the remains of the poor fellows, who had met with a watery grave.
