Burials at Denmark Cemetery, W.A. - by date
DENMARK is a coastal town located on Wilson Inlet in the Great Southern region of WA, 423km south of Perth. The Aboriginal word for Denmark is Kurrabup, which means place of the black swan.
WARNING Some content here contains references to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have passed away
The cemetery (still in use) is located about 4km NE of the town on the South Coast Highway. Being the last resting place of many of Denmark’s pioneers, it has historic and social cultural heritage significance. Research into the death/burial records has uncovered tragedies such as diphtheria epidemics, drownings and boating accidents on the lake and in dams. The early deaths reflect the extreme loneliness, isolation, stress and hardship faced by the early settlers. The original part of the Cemetery was divided into four parts: “Primitive Methodist", "Church of England", "Roman Catholic" and "Presbyterian”, consisted of half an acre cleared in the centre of a ten acre reserve. Later a portion 20'x20' in the (then) extreme NW corner was fenced off to be used as a Stillbirth section (see list at end).
The cemetery opened in 1910 due to the deaths of three children of influenza.
Two year old Ada Morgan was the 1st burial on 5 Jan 1910

the Smeed family died in a yachting disaster -
Albany Advertiser SEVEN LIVES LOST .. Wilson's Inlet on the south coast near Denmark was the scene of a yachting disaster on Sunday afternoon last, when a small sailing boat capsized during a squall and all the occupants - four adults and three children - were drowned.
The first news of the tragedy was received in Perth by the Acting Deputy Postmaster-General (Mr Lloyd) in a telegram from the postmaster at Denmark (Mr Watts), which stated:— "Regret report serious boating fatality yesterday afternoon. Mr Smeed, Perth, nurseryman, and his family, went out on Wilson's Inlet in their sailing boat 'Little Wonder', for first time. Were caught in squall and foundered. Bodies of Mr Smeed and one grandchild recovered. Party consisted of Mr Smeed, sen., son Leonard, son Bert, and his two children, daughter, Mrs Wright, and her child. Search now being made.
Inquiries made amongst the relatives of the unlucky family in Perth by a "Daily News" representative resulted in the discovery of the fact that the Smeeds were connected by marriage with quite a number of well-known families in and around Perth. Mr William Leonard Smeed, whose age was between 50 and 60, married twice. By his first wife he had issue two sons and two daughters, viz., Mr Albert William Smeed, Mr L. A. Smeed (in the Postal Department), Mrs H. Throssell, of Northam and Mrs Ted Cook, of Kalgoorlie and Mrs Rose Granville of Maylands (Violet's twin sister), Leonard Smeed and Mrs Wright by the second wife who died some years ago. Mrs Albert Smeed, who is living at the farm at Denmark, has a mother living at Maylands.
It appears that although it is not likely that either Mr Smeed the elder or Mr Albert Smeed knew much about boating, it is quite likely that Mr Leonard Smeed had some knowledge this way, inasmuch as he had been engaged for some time in building a boat, probably the ill-fated 'Little Wonder'
At the one farm at Denmark lived Mr William Leonard Smeed, son Leonard Smeed and daughter Mrs Wright and her child and at the other, which was close handy, son Mr Albert Smeed, his wife and family.
Mrs Albert William Smeed (daughter-in-law), who had arranged to go with the party, had a premonition of disaster and refused to proceed at the last moment. She tried, furthermore, to persuade the others to forego the trip but without avail. Mrs Smeed is now suffering from severe shock and on Monday night was unconscious.

LATE JOHN PRESHAW By the death of Mr John A. O. Preshaw at Denmark on October 7, West Australia loses a man who for over forty years has taken an active interest in the commercial and sporting life of the State. Born in Cromwell, New Zealand (to John Allan Preshaw & Christina Bremner), nearly seventy years ago, the deceased resided in Queensland for a few years, and then entered the service of the South British Insurance Co. In 1900 he was appointed W.A. Manager of the Company and was at the time one of the youngest managers in the State. The company made splendid progress under his guidance. On retiring a few years ago he took up residence at Denmark, where two of his sons were farming. Quickly entering into all local movements he soon became widely known and highly respected. After a brief illness Mr Preshaw passed away and was buried in Denmark last Thursday. The Rev B. Lousada conducted a service at St. Leonard's Church of England prior to the burial, Mrs E. Bayley officiating at the organ.
Amongst those present at the funeral were Sydney and John Preshaw (sons of the deceased), Messrs A. S. McClintock, J.P., E. Bailey, Tormey, T. Wright, E. Hard and J. Holmes (pall bearers), C. J. Kiddle, S. E. Hollyock, J. Silver, V. E. Jefferis, T. Wright, J. F. Rickets, C. Offer, J. Clark, N. Grant, A. McClintock (representing the South Perth Bowling Club) and representatives of the Albany No.10 W.A.C. Lodge, Denmark Golf Club, South British Insurance Co., and many others.
The many beautiful wreaths included those from the Perth Lodge, No.33; South Perth Bowling Club; Denmark Golf Club; Denmark Infant Health Centre; Albany Lodge, No. 33; Mr and Mrs J. Holmes; Mr and Mrs McClintock; J. A. Thomson; Mr and Mrs J. Silver; Mr and Mrs W. Perritt; Mr and Mrs Whittaker; Mr and Mrs Gus Hard; Mr and Mrs Hollyock; Miss Williams; Mrs Kiddle and many others.
The deceased leaves a widow and four sons (Allan, Jack, Syd & Cecil). The eldest, Allan, is Registrar of the University of Tasmania and is at present serving in the British Navy. The late Mr Preshaw was a keen tennis player in his young days and subsequently did much successful yacht racing in Perth in his well-known yacht the "Rotohue," afterwards playing golf and bowls in South Perth for several years. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr H. C. Prior, of Albany.

Record, 11 April 1992 (pdf)
Pastor Rodney Straker, was born in Hampstead, England on September 17, 1917. Pastor Straker was the son of a master printer. During his youth he developed a strong moral awareness of the physical needs of humanity and in the late 1930s became a lecturer of physical education at Exeter University and later Bedales, where Princess Margaret's children were educated. He worked conscientiously in war-torn London and, during the Depression, went farming in Wales and later New Zealand to educate farmers and alleviate food shortages. In 1943 he married Patti Melville and they had three children. In 1950 he became a Christian and after studying theology at Avondale College, became a full-time minister. Pastor Straker ministered from 1954 to 1976. He developed new methods of outreach in various communities within Queensland and New South Wales and began new churches. His ministry continued after his retirement in Perth and Denmark, Western Australia. He is remembered as a man of steady devotion, lyalty and dependability. He is survived by his wife Patti and children, Pearl, Wanda and Leon and their families

Florence 'Florrie' Smeed (nee Halliday 1881-1943)
Widow of Albert William Smeed, who was a son of William Leonard Smeed (drowned and the father & grandfather of all those drowned) and William's daughter-in-law (read 1911 story at top).
Florrie had arranged to go with the party, but had a premonition of disaster and refused to go at the last moment. She tried to persuade the others not to go on the trip but without success.
The girl sitting on the tank is probably Florrie's 14 year old sister-in-law, Myrtle Flora Eden Smeed (1897-1991). She was a daughter of William's only other son, Leonard Arthur Smeed (not on the boat, died in France 1916).

The following particulars of a severe storm which occurred on Thursday last at the Wairarapa, are supplied by Mr R. Welch to one of the Wairarapa papers:- On Thursday the lightning struck a flax bush on his land, tearing the leaves into shreds and killing five sheep and two rabbits which were under it. A mare, the property of Mr F. Gray, which was two chains away, was also killed. The flax was torn into shreds and some may be seen at this office. large holes were found in the ground. One of these looks as if the lightning had gone in and out again. yesterday the lightning appears to have struck a tree near Masterton.

It was unanimously resolved on the motion of Mr J. Vile that a match should be held. FATAL HORSE ACCIDENT. Death of Mr Isaac Bairstow
.. On the night of 1 May 1888, Mr Bairstow of Clareville, met with an accident near the Waingawa bridge. He had left Kuripuni about 5:20pm, a bit later than he intended but, as he mentioned at Messrs Caselberg & Co's store, he had been waiting for a telegram. His body was found, quite dead, about 6.35pm on the Taratahi main road (now State Hwy 2), about half a mile past the bridge (presuming Waingawa bridge) near the junction of Gray's road... This was probably the junction with East Taratahi road. The distance from the bridge is right and Farquhar lived (and died) on East Taratahi road so likely the locals named it Gray's Road. It was never officially named that.
slightly off-topic NOTE Before a bridge was built over the Waingawa River, a ferry was used. In the mid 1860s John Richardson was the landlord of the 'Waingawa Ferry House' (hotel). In Jan 1868 he attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a razor in the hotel. In 1871 Thomas Bennett of the 'Waingawa Ferry House' went bankrupt. Tenders were called in Jan 1872 to build a bridge and it was opened in August that year

MASTERTON - Mr Farquhar Gray has been elected president of the Masterton A. and P. Association and Mr C. H. Gayfer secretary.
Wairarapa Daily Times, 19 Oct 1892 In the Trinity College examinations for the current year, Miss Caroline Gray heads the intermediate passes in the Wellington list. Miss Caroline Gray is a daughter of Mr Farquhar Gray and a pupil of whom Mr Von Keisenberg, who supervised her studies, may justly be proud.
IN 1893 Roderick Gray was a Forward in the New Zealand Team to tour Australia in which he played two games. He scored two tries in a win over New South Wales. His club then was Masterton & Red Star. In 1895 he played with Wairarapa Bush. He did not appear in any Test matches as NZ did not play its first full international until 1903.
Wairarapa Daily Times, 17 Jan 1894
GRAY - At Taratahi, on January 16th, Farquhar Gray, aged 55 years
We very much regret to have to record the somewhat unexpected death of Mr Farquhar Gray, one of Masterton's oldest and most prominent settlers, who passed away at his residence, Taratahi, at an early hour this morning.
Mr Gray was a native of Rosshire, Scotland and came to New Zealand in 1865. He was for a few months with Mr Richard Collins, of Te Ore Ore and in the same year opened a blacksmith's shop in Church Street, afterwards removing his business to Queen Street, where his establishment became famous for making and repairing agricultural implement and machinery.
About twelve years ago Mr Gray sold his business to Mr James Ross and retired to a property on the Taratahi, which he had purchased from Mr G. Avery and devoted his time to farming generally and the breeding of stud sheep in particular.
His success may be gauged from the fact that he has always been one of the largest prize takers at the Masterton A. and P. Society's Shows and his Romney Marsh flock has obtained quite a colonial reputation.
Mr Gray always took the greatest interest in the welfare of Masterton and its local institutions and was at one time a member of the Borough Council and Town Lands Trust. He was a member of the Masonic order and for many years held the office of Treasurer of the old Thistle Lodge. He also, in the year 1871, took an active part in the founding of Court Royal Enterprise A.O.F., and up to the time of his demise, continued to take an active interest in the institution, retaining the position of Trustee of the Court.
In 1891 Mr Gray was elected President of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society and in 1892, President of the Masterton A. and P. Association, ably filling each position.
For some years past Mr Gray has been troubled with an internal complaint which ultimately proved fatal although his end was hardly expected so soon.
The deceased leaves a wife and family of three sons and five daughters(sic), besides many true friends to mourn his loss.
* We understand that the late Mr Farquar Gray's life was insured with the Government for £500 (2018 equivalent of $96,240)
Wairarapa Daily Times, 20 Jan 1894
The funeral of the late Mr Farquhar Gray, took place yesterday afternoon, the procession being one of the largest ever seen in Masterton, settlers from all parts attending to pay a last tribute to one respected by all who knew him. Heavy rain fell all the afternoon, but this did not prevent a very large gathering from assembling at the graveside. The members of the Masterton Masonic Lodge and of the Court Loyal Enterprise (Ancient Order of Foresters) attended in full regalia, adding largely to the solemnity of the procession. The hearse and coffin were covered with beautiful wreaths, forwarded by the deceased's friends. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev W. E. Paige M.A., after which the impressive ceremonies of the Masonic and Foresters' orders were feelingly performed. The Masonic service was conducted by the Worshipful Master, Bro. C. A. Pownall and the Foresters' service by Past Chief Ranger, Bro. R. Brown.
NZ Mail, 23 March 1894
Among the list of deputy-returning officers for the Wairarapa licensing district, we notice the name of one lady, Miss Gray, who is to take charge of the polling-booth at Taratahi. The fair sex are evidently asserting themselves.
Wairarapa Daily Times, 23 Nov 1894
The adjourned case, G. Heron and E. Chamberlain (as executors in the estate of the late Farquhar Gray) v Ah Lop, in which the defendant was called upon to show cause why he should not quit certain premises occupied by him in Queen-street, due notice having given. Mr Bunny appeared for the plaintiff and contended that the tenancy was a weekly one.
Mr Beard, for defendant, would not admit that the tenancy was a weekly one.
George Heron, on oath, state that as an executor in the estate of Mr Gray, he dealt with certain of deceased's properties. When Mr Gray died Ah Lop was in possession and although he had been given notice to quit had not done so. Defendant had paid rent. At the last conversation with defendant gave him three months to quit. Ah Lop applied to witness for a lease which was refused.
For the defence it was contended that Ah Lop has been promised a lease of the premises, Mr W. Lowes giving evidence in support of the contention.
After considerable argument His Worship decided that Ah Lop must quit within three weeks.

COMMISSION TO TRUSTEES
The Chief Justice had before him yesterday morning two matters arising out of the estate of Farquhar Gray, deceased, of Taratahi, Wairarapa. The first was a motion to vary or rescind an order made by His Honor last year, where by he ordered that the trustees and executors should be paid 5 per cent commission of the first £1000, 2½ per cent on the balance of the total value of the estate and 5 per cent per annum on the annual value of the estate during the existence of the trust. Mr Tripp, on behalf of the widow and beneficiaries, contended that the executors should only be allowed a commission on the personalty for the work done as executors and that they could not apply for commission as trustees on the corpus of the estate until the trusts were completed. Mr Bunny for the executors and trustees, contended to the contrary. The second application was a summons to determine whether the trustees, being paid an annual sum by way of commission, could employ an agent at the expense of the estate to collect the rents. Mr Tripp contended that the collection of rents was part of the duty of the trustees .. more here
WRITTEN 1897 ..
* Gray Bros (Roderick Gray & Farquhar Gray), Sheep Breeders and Farmers, “Fairburn,” Masterton. This well-known farm of nearly 1200 acres, which was brought into cultivation by the late Mr. Farquhar Gray, who settled in the district in the early sixties and to which his sons have succeeded, is famous for its stud sheep. Messrs Gray Bros. are the most noted prize-winners for the Romney Marsh variety, having gained the champion prize for a ram at the last Wellington show. During the past few years no less than twenty gold medals have been won by their exhibits of sheep, cattle, and horses at the various shows in the provincial district, besides several silver trophies and medals. The senior partner, Mr Roderick Gray, was born in 1870 in Masterton, where he was educated. He learned farming under his father's guidance and on that gentleman's death in 1894, with his brother, he took over the management of the property. He has earned a reputation as an athlete, being considered the best mile runner in the Wairarapa. In 1893 he was one of the New Zealand representative football team that visited Australia. He is now vice president of the Parkvale Football Club, a member of the Masterton Football Club, of the Wairarapa representative team and of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society. The firm are, of course, supporters of the various pastoral and agricultural societies.
* Charles Avery, Farmer, Pahiatua. A typical New Zealand farmer, Mr Avery was born at the Lower Hutt on the 19th of November, 1851 and was educated at the old Provincial Government School Taita, where his aged father still resides. In those days the children of the bush were early inured to toil. At the age of twenty-one Mr Avery was managing one of his father's farms at Taratahi, near Carterton, a farm which was afterwards sold to the late Mr Farquhar Gray, the father of Messrs Gray Bros.

FIRE AT MASTERTON - A LANDMARK DESTROYED
The fire bell in Masterton sounded a vigorous alarm at 12.20 o'clock this morning and a crowd soon assembled in Dixon Street, where huge flames were issuing from what is known as "the cottage" at the rear of the Club Hotel. The Fire Brigade turned out promptly and within five minutes of the giving of the alarm, had water playing on the burning building. The house, which was a very old one, having been erected in the early days, by the late Mr Farquhar Gray, was completely gutted. It was occupied as a sleeping place by members of the staff of the Club Hotel, all of whom were away, cleaning up after the banquet, when the fire broke out. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The building contained furniture valued at about £50 (2018 equivalent of $8,350) and the hotel staff lost their belongings. If there was any insurance on the building (which was owned by Mr R. Gray (Roy), it was not ascertainable.
Farquhar Gray died 16 Jan 1894 at Taratahi aged 55
Jemima Gray died 5 Aug 1905 at Taratahi aged 68
They are buried together in Archer Street, Masterton

ARRIVAL of the LANCASHIRE WITCH
- London 13 Feb 1865 - Auckland 1 June -
* Passengers taken from a number of sources:-
The Southern Cross at Papers Past, 3 June 1865 has many names but there are many not on the list which I have gleaned from other sources and add here. Some spelling of names have been corrected when found but there may be others
NZETC & Papers Past
The ship Lancashire Witch, 1,574 tons, Captain George King, anchored off the heads yesterday afternoon from London, with the largest number of passengers that ever came to Auckland in one vessel, viz, 490. She left Start Point on February 13, and crossed the Equator on March 6, 22 days out, in longitude 28.30 west. The meridian of Greenwich was reached on April 24, 64 days out, thus taking 42 days to run from the Equator to that point. The reason of this long passage was that no southern trades were met with, and after reaching latitude 20 degrees she had a series of south-east gales. The easting was run down between 45 and 46 degrees. Tasmania was sighted on May 21, and the North Cape on Thursday morning, June 1, being 100 days from her departure from England.
Notwithstanding the long voyage and the great number of passengers, the ship appears to be in a very clean and comfortable condition. A volunteer brigade was organized during the voyage and the members regularly drilled by Sergeant-Major Roberts.
Dr. Wills, the father of the famous Australian explorer, has come out as surgeon of the ship and the passengers have presented him with a testimonial in acknowledgement of his services.
Twelve children have died during the voyage and there have been five births. All the passengers are sent out by Captain Daldy.
The Lancashire Witch was in this port about nine years ago, but since then has been entirely refitted at a cost of £22,000. She belongs to Messrs Seymour, Peacock and Co.; and has been chartered by Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co. She is consigned to Mr W. Graham

There was another Ada Rosina Bishop (1884-1945) also born in 1884, who was living in New Zealand at the same time. Maybe it was that Ada who was born in Somerset? (needs research). He listed Ada Rose Colquhoun as his next of kin, at 57 Vermont St., Ponsonby. His added biographical information has that he was the father of Daniel John Donovan of Mount Eden (presuming it refers to his son Daniel John Colquhoun born 1915).
Daniel Joseph Donovan was killed in action, 4 Oct 1917 at Ypres, Belgium and his memorial is at Tyne Cot Memorial
In 1941 Daniel John Colquhoun (Ada's son) served in WWII 46650, he listed his mother Ada as next of kin living at 7 Richborne St., Mt Albert

NOTES ON JOSEPH COLQUHOUN
* FIRST .. it is thought that Joseph, or some other member of the family, has changed the spelling of their name from Colhoun to Colquhoun. Although the spelling has changed over time I now believe it was not a deliberate act on anyone's part. On the ship's list of 1879 they are Colquhoun. Some ancestors are Colhoun, as are some descendants. I believe it was the record-keepers along the way. Best example is one of Joseph's children who was born & registered as Colhoun yet when he died 4 days later he was buried as Colquhoun. To save further confusion I will add the spelling that is found on official records. If you are a family member you can decide.
JOSEPH COLQUHOUN's family

Stephen Caudle of Caudletown, Tokomairiro (Milton)
Tokomairiro, now Milton, was founded in 1850 and was an important town in early Otago mainly due to its location on the route to the goldfields and also for the Bruce Woollen Mills, which were among the province's largest factories. The town was connected to the national railway network in the early 1870s when the Main South Line was built through the town.
An early claim to fame for Tokomairiro was its pottery, often regarded as some of the country's finest. Clay is a plentiful natural resource in South Otago and potteries were a major employer in the late 19th century throughout South Otago and Southland. Between 1873 and 1915 numerous pottery works operated from the area, starting with William White's short-lived Tokomairiro Steam Pottery Works, reputedly the first industrial kilns in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Milton Pottery works was rescued in 1880 by former Mayor of Dunedin (1876) Charles Stephen Reeves. The industry reached its height in the 1880s, at which time five kilns were operating and over 40 staff were employed, producing building materials such as bricks and tiles, sanitary ceramics such as washbasins and domestic and decorative dinner sets, vases and jars.
It was in Tokomairiro that Stephen Caudle (1819-1887) married Catherine Theresa Caldbeck (1831-1920) on 31 Aug 1863

A BRICK WALL
Mr S. Caudle, brickmaker, has now in course of erection in his garden at Helensbrook, a brick wall 180ft in length and 12ft in height, in the construction of which no less than 34,000 bricks will be used. The special purpose for which this wall is being erected is the growth of peaches, for which purpose the spot chosen is as favorable as any in the district. Mr Caudle informs us that he purposes devoting his future attention and energies more exclusively to gardening operation than hitherto, of which fact the wall referred to is a palpable sign.

TOKOMAIRIRO POTTERY FIELDS Despite the gloomy anticipations of those who form the non-progressive class in the Tokomairiro district in relation to the success of the pottery art, from the failure of the formation of the Royal Pottery Company, we have great pleasure in pointing out the stand taken by Mr W. M. White in the resolve now formed to carry the works on by himself .. Mr Peter McGill has also commenced to make bricks for buildings he contemplates erecting bye and bye; while the well known Stephen Caudle is still engaged at his brick works down the road ..
Bruce Herald, 31 Oct 1882
SUPPLYING BRICKS
Mr Stephen Caudle has expressed to us his opinion that the renunciation of the Woollen Factory project was premature. Mr Caudle informs us that he was and still is, prepared to supply all bricks required for the buildings either upon credit for three years, or to take out the value in shares. We should not be surprised to hear of the site and timber being offered on the same or similar terms.
Bruce Herald, 10 June 1887
A NEW HORSE
Everybody will be pleased to know that Mr Stephen Caudle has invested in a new horse and that his well-known chariot will henceforward be drawn by a regular spanker. The ancient animal which has faithfully discharged its onerous duties for so many years will, we understand, be exported along with a draft of valuable animals which will shortly be sent to India as remounts for the cavalry.
Bruce Herald, 14 June 1887
The JUBILEE CELEBRATION - To The Editor .. this would indeed be a veritable illustration of the early days of Queen Victoria. As an antiquated three-decker could not well be procured for the procession, the captain might be induced to mount Mr Stephen Caudle's antique horse, which, like himself, is on the retired list, but always ready for active service when called upon by its country ..
Bruce Herald, 29 July 1887
DEATH OF OLD HORSE
It is with profound melancholy and sincere regret that we record the death of Mr Stephen Caudle's horse. The animal deserves to be enshrined among the noble army of martyrs. Old identities remember him a quarter of a century ago and then he bore every indication of having done royal service in his time. He was an aged animal when first he proudly drew his owner about Tokomairiro Plains. He may even have celebrated his jubilee before he set foot on these shores. He was a bay, but his memory is green. He flourished like a bay tree, but has been cut down like the grass. Requieshorse in pace - Just at this moment we are credibly informed the horse was only 35 years old. He was more juvenile than we thought him. Ah, well! "Whom the gods love die young"

ST JOHN'S CHURCH, Milton The average attendance at the Sunday services has been well maintained, that of the morning being 76 and of the evening 86. At the week-day evening service, the average attendance was 25. During the year the Parsonage house has been completed through the generosity of Mr Finch, bu the erection of the verandah. Both the Parish as a whole and the Incumbent individually owe a debt of gratitude to Mr Finch for his loving care of the gardens about the church and parsonage and it is almost needless to say that the church property is the admiration of all who see it.
Since the last meeting the church has to regret the removal by death of two most regular attendants, viz., Mr E. Marryatt (Edward Marryatt 1827-1887) and Mr S. Caudle.
The vestry desire to record their thanks to Messrs Fox and Ransome, lay readers, to Mr Ransome as superintendent and the teachers in the Sunday School, to Mrs Fox as organist and Mr Marryatt and others for trimming and lighting the lamps, to Mr Hodgson for ringing the bell, to Messrs D. Reid and Hollick auditors and to Mrs Mahoney and Misses Scott, Graham and Barrett for cleaning the Church. As the first named ladies undertook the work for the year which has expired only, the Vestry, after some discussion. left the matter in the hands of the Incumbent and Mr Twiss, which has resulted in an arrangement being made with Miss Barrett, whereby she has undertaken to clean the Church and to trim and light the lamps. The Vestry also recommend to their successors the desirability of procuring new lamps before the dark weather sets in .. more at link above

DEATH OF A COLLEAGUE Mr Joseph Barrett, a very old resident of Tokomaririro, died at his residence at Caudletown on Friday morning, at the advanced age of 73 years. Deceased was born in a little village in Wilshire, England and emigrated to Victoria when quite a youth. After spending some time in Victoria he came to New Zealand, landing at Port Chalmers in 1861. Shortly afterwards he opened a boarding house at Waihola, in company with the late Stephen Caudle and also conducted a bakery business. About a year later the partners established a brick kiln on the property now owned by Mr S. Caudle (Stephen's son Stephen) - it being the first of its kind in Tokomairiro. Later the firm established similar works at Milton on the section on which the Milton Potteries now stand and the business was latterly carried on by Mr Barrett on his own account ..

TOKOMAIRIRO FARMERS' CLUB At the monthly meeting the committee received a letter from Mr A. Nelson who wrote:- With reference to my protest to the prize being awarded to Mr Stephen Caudle for Class II, collection of apples (dessert), at the recent winter show, my main objection was that the exhibit ought to have been disqualified as not being in accordance with the schedule. Fully two-thirds of the apples were well-known cooking varieties and only one-third dessert apples. The Club should in my opinion stoutly object to any attempt to impose on them with regard to any exhibit. The Club are also to blame in nor appointing a judge who knew the difference between dessert and cooking apples. I understand that the exhibits in Classes IX and C were disqualified as not being according to schedule.

Obituary STEPHEN CAUDLE
The above gentleman, who was 54 years of age, passed away quietly, after a lingering illness, at the Dunedin Hospital on March 12th. Deceased, who was of a quiet and retiring disposition, was a son of the late Stephen Caudle, after whom a well-known neighbourhood us unofficially named. Born in 1866 (13 Sep 1865), at Caudeltown, he had lived all his life in that vicinity in company with his aged mother, during which time his stirling character and kindly disposition had earned for him the respect of the community. Deceased, who was unmarried had never known a day's illness and his unexpected demise at a comparatively early age cast quite a gloom throughout the district. His generous and inherent mauliness will be missed. He was a keen supporter of the Toko. Horticultural Society and a frequent and successful exhibitor at their shows. In his earlier days he had been an enthusiastic member of the Otago Hussars and a keen draught player. The funeral took place at the Anderson's Bay cemetery, the Rev Canon Small officiating at the graveside.

FOOT NOTES
Saint Johns Anglican cemetery at Milton is a long forgotten one. It was initially in the grounds of the first Anglican Church. This Church was demolished when the new Church was built in 1866. The new Church was a long way from the position of the old one - now on the corner of State Highway 1 and Cowper Street in Milton. The old is now just a paddock on Back Road. Fairfax Cemetery was opened in 1854 so most burials were made there after the closure of the Anglican St John's Cemetery. It still belongs however, to the Anglican Church, with surviving records being held at the Hocken Library in Dunedin. There are many more burials in this cemetery than are recorded in the surviving records. Attempts are being made to restore the Cemetery, and garner information about those buried there. With even the configuration of burials unclear, a ground penetrating radar is to be used to build a map of the site before the end of 2015. After this is done contact with descendants both locally and nationally will be made where possible. Then restoration will be started which will include signage and a kiosk also a memorial made with the names, where known, of those buried. There are 60 known burials on the site dated from 1860 to about 1929. Over 100 burials are known or suspected to have taken place.
* In 2016 a surprising number of bodies were found and removed during the recent exhumation project to identify early South Otago people in unmarked graves. Skeletal remains and coffin furniture uncovered in a Milton cemetery research project to be analysed at the University of Otago, Dunedin
* In July 2017 a project was being undertaken in partnership with a local community group called Tokomairiro Project 60 (TP60) and the Anglican Church. A public meeting to unveil the initial findings and individual life histories of some of the people buried at the cemetery ..
